Title: Tiny Shida's Mobile
Post by: nrshida on August 21, 2012, 04:51:43 AM
I have two 1:48th scale aircraft kits I was saving for a less busy time to super detail etc, but prompted by Redd's suggestion I've decided to build them up standard and paint them and make Tiny Shida a mobile for above his bed when he gets out of his incubator.

Wildcat1, a fellow AH player who I have never met, has volunteered to contribute a model of his favourite aircraft: a Grumman F4F Wildcat, in his favourite paint scheme, the Cactus Air Force livery.

Just also bought a Spitfire Mark I kit off eBay, since I was telling Tiny Shida all about Douglas Bader on Saturday, for inspiration to fight his infection.

Started this thread to post some progress photos and get some guidance with making the models, it's been 25 years I reckon since I last painted a model

Pictures to follow...

Not quite.Although the Airfix Hurri is a pretty simple kit made I think in 1978. Cockpit and pilot are done

We must avoid the complete corruption of the lad with all of those ugly red dots . Instead point him to a shape that is more in line with his heritage . Show him the beauty of the elliptical wing . Better yet truly equip him for success in life and help him develop an appreciation for twin engines providing balance to aesthetically pleasing gondola . Slash obviously you raise children that spend all their time in the principals office or learning the meaning to the words " plausible deniablity " . It is far to late for dad I am afraid . Other members of the GFC can back me up on this . Did we not hear shida not long ago confess/brag about numerous incidents with the constabulary ? Lucky it wasn't U.S. LEOs' as they would have just shot him for the many felonies on motor bikes he admitted to committing !!! Danny Zach MickeyD and I were shocked into silence I can tell you .Slash your intention to expose the young man to such undesirable things like ugly red dots  .  Seems to be nothing more than an attempt at future job security for your self . I agree hence my reference to the elliptical wing . Good man bruv . With those choices he is sure to be a good factory worker or infantryman !!!!!! Now a Doctor or Scientist lets think 2 engines with a gondola ! Italian planes I think would be the worse of all possible choices , he might wind up a complete social outcast and be an engineer  :cry

I bought a Vector resin engine for the Hayate model and I was originally thinking of stressing the skin and detailing the cockpit but I'm not sure I'll have time now, might built it fairly clean.

I say Spitfires , hurricanes, tiffies, mossies, whirlwind and possibly a lancaster just to remind him how to drop bombs properly.    :airplane:

I've ordered a Mark I Spitfire, is it possible to convert that to Douglas Bader's Mark V? Danny's building the Hurricane but was last seen three days ago running to the bathroom with his fingers stuck together  :lol

 :rofl :rofl

I'd never seen a Hayate before I came to Aces High and after two months of Zero flying I just liked the way it drove. Hlbly, a quote from Back to the Future: 'What do you mean Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan'.  :rofl

I'm shocked Hlbly that you would try to slander my character now that I am a responsible Father with those outrageous allegations. Those motorcycling incidents by the way are the direct result of a difference of opinion between myself and the British traffic police: I was of the opinion that it was silly that there was only one grade of license and that people that could ride faster, should ride faster and went on to test my theory. The Police disagreed and were just being over socialistic about the whole thing. Besides they didn't catch me speeding too often (I was going to fast to stop (and twice that was absolutely true  )).

Regarding that song, I warn everybody NOT to let Hlbly sing that to you over comms. Hlbly's singing is like Vogon poetry. He sang it to me once on Vent and my ears were bleeding. He seems to take a screaming audience as encouragement.

Good luck sir, if you need some help please let me know.  I have been building since I was 13 and I have won at the national level.  Working on a B-25J right now sir.

Thank you Chewie, I need help already. YouTube is a fantastic resource for modelling How Tos, but I couldn't find anything yet on doing bare metal finishes. I have an airbrush, but is it paint or some kind of foil? How do you make the small differences in colour and finish between different panels? I can practice on the MiG-21 before starting on the Hayate. 29th Sentai naturally

Shida, this is a fantastic product for bare metal finishes:
http://www.megahobby.com/testorsmetalizer12ozbottles.aspx (http://www.megahobby.com/testorsmetalizer12ozbottles.aspx)

Also, I would recommend using acrylic paint. Enamel requires some very specialized thinners/sealers.

The Wildcat model I'll be basing this one on is that of Joe Foss, VMF-121. He amassed 26 victories from October 1942 to January 1943 while based at Guadalcanal, and set the standard for Marine Corps aviation.

A cool painting of him
(http://www.nebraskahistory.org/images/museum/collect/falter/10645-35.jpg)

Still waiting for the kit to arrive. Not going to weather it too much, I don't think a small child will appreciate a "dirty" airplane  :)

Crickey, take it easy fellas otherwise we're going to need a bigger house! A B-29 Eric

Please be aware we live in Europe, I don't want you to all go spending money on postage, I'd rather you all had some beers, enjoyed yourself and toasted the Tiny Shida while doing so.

Regarding the little fella, we have to wait and see how he takes to his food once again, need 7-10 days to see if there is any internal damage. He's on 1 ml of mother's milk per four hours. Externally looking great, relaxed and also alert, looking around a bit and yawning a lot  :lol

Thanks for the paint advice Wildcat, I have an airbrush already. I've used Tamiya acrylic paint for a few years too. Will give that Testors a try. Bit limitted with equipment and workspace at the Ronald McDonald house, but perhaps I can start with the Hayate's engine.

I love that Wildcat paint scheme, where do you find such profiles?

What years were you in Japan?  My family and I worked there from 1987 - 91, and my oldest son loved the show called "Kamen Raidaa Black RX".  Loved it so much that when he graduated from yochien (kindergarden), when they asked what he wanted to be when he grew up he answered "Kamen Rider Black RX!" :D

The kit and the paint for Little Shida's Wildcat finally came in, I started almost immediately and got pretty far today. The interior is assembled and painted, and the two halves of the fuselage are together. I've lost several thousand brain cells breathing in the fumes of the cement and the paint, but so far it has been worth it.

here are some pics, they're from my cell phone so forgive the low quality:

the cockpit I admit isn't extremely detailed, most surfaces only have one coat of interior green, but it gives the cockpit a little weathered look.

here's the two fuselage pieces joined together
(http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy329/Wildcat1995/IMAG0277.jpg)

I'm using Model Masters acrylic paint, I paint thin coats, because two or three thin coats are better looking than one thick coat. no airbrushes, all painted by hand.

can't wait to get back to it, but for now i need to watch Michigan beat Alabama :devil

Wow great! The F4F sure has a big pair of wings on her  Is that your glue Wildcat, the black container in the last picture? Who makes that? Are you doing wheels up turning and burning or wheels and flaps out on approach?

Pipz, I just started a Hasegawa Ki-84 today, not got very far. Love the paintwork, also on the Spitfire Mark VIII. Any weathering tips for me? Also where do you get the pilot figures from and who makes the Bf109G-6/14 kit?

Will post some pictures too tomorrow.  :rock

That Ki84 by Hasegawa is a excellent kit! Hasegawa and Academy both make 109 g6/14 kits. You can get the tall and standard tail depending on what kit you buy. I would go with the Hasegawa kits if given a choice. I had a lot of figures "donated" to me by friends who dont use them in theyre builds.
But if your not as popular as me heres a link that may interest you  :D  ;)
http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/ICM48083
It contains a seated figure that you can touch up and put into anything. I bought a couple when they were on sale.

As for weathering I look at real world stuff to get an idea on how I want to weather a kit. Our forklifts at work are good insperation!

Usually the Tamiya kits undercarage doors fit in the up postion like they are suppose to. Generally Hasegawa doesnt

here's an update on Little Shida's Wildcat.

I was able to configure the gear-up position, even though the kit is designed for gear-down. It was a bit tricky, because the wheels have virtually no support, and are hanging on there by the wheel well itself and lots of glue. I think it looks pretty seamless, though. After that, I was able to assemble the tail, the inner fixtures, and attach the wings to the fuselage. All she needs now is the engine, and we'll be ready for paint, before the canopy goes on.

These pics are from my cell phone again, I need to invest in a proper camera...

We've had a bad week. Tiny Shida was under the weather but has swam out of trouble again. Haven't exactly progressed very far with his models yet.

Made a start on the Hasegawa Ki-84, want to add a little extra detail because this is one of my favourites, especially to the skin, but first decided to add a bit of detail to the gun ports using an old paintbrush for the ducts. Have to finish this before I join the fuselage halves together:-

At this rate this model should be finished in time for his 70th birthday, lolz. Hope to go a bit faster now.

Shida needs to get tiny Shida one of these! :D

That thing would be so fun to modify to shoot fireworks.

Good to hear tiny shida is showing strong again.

I'm about ready to start painting, I have the engine cowling and propeller on, which pretty much completes it. All i have to do now is paint, then I will attach the canopy. Looking good so far, unfortunately no new pictures  :salute

Nice looking finishes shida. I am building an old 1/72 Hasegawa Frank right now. I am actually gonna use you lower fuse pic of the Frank to weather mine :)

I'm admittedly struggling more that a little with this P38 for Tiny-shida.  My eyesight has gotten pretty poor and my left had shakes a bit nowadays.  It will get finished but I'm guessing a 10 year old could probably do better.  Doesn't matter, all I have to to is imagine you pointing at it years from now and the two of you laughing when you say, "yeah, well Zoney built that one for you".

The finish doesn't matter Zoney, the fact that you would do this for a tiny fellow does  :salute

Perdue3, the Hasegawa's finish is really precise, and the photographs I'm working from tell a tale of a far coarser finish (poor panel work and distortion from riveting), so I hope to do a little work on that. I'm aiming for the 29th Sentai paint scheme which means a lot of bare metal. I've decided to sacrifice my MiG-29 model to experiment with technique & painting.

Danny told me he already finished his Hurricane, Wildcat's Wildcat looks fantastic so far. I've also got a Tamiya Spitfire Mark I which I'll just do a straight assembly and paint of. Sexy looking wings but two of the MGs stick out a tad which is confusing because I thought they put a patch of red doped canvas over them each sortie? Don't have so many reference photos of that  :headscratch:

I haven't built scale models since the 70's, but we had a method of using Aluminum Foil for covering models, saw several nice 1/32 scale F86's. The difference in panels was accomplished turning the the foil over for different panels. I would assume the technique is still available at the hobby shop.

Thanks Jimmy, I may have to look for that if I can't get on with the Testors that Wildcat recommended.

I finished one gun port on my Hayate but it's been a bit frantic. Hopefully a picture soon.

In the meantime my good friend Danny sent this over for Tiny Shida, meet Algenon the left-handed Hurricane pilot
