2 weeks.
Seriously folks, it's been how many years since we had a new map? Spare me the reflections on chrome planes or a new JU-87. Just give me a new map every once in a while. HiTec, this has to be bad for business.

If you are talking about Main Arena - 1 year and 221 days. :)

Maps are one of the things the members of the community can make and submit to HTC. Why don't you make one and submit it?

He can't, he's too busy...... complaining! :neener:
-

the same reason only a small handfull of the 1000s of subscribers are even attempting it would be my guess.
want a cure for cancer? well why you go and find it yourself! we have google for gods sake! :old:

I wish they would let me re-texture some of the ones that HTC made. Visually, they would look like new maps. :)
-
I'm not going to make a new map. It seems that a new map would trump another JU87. As long as I'm complaining, the new update takes more computer horsepower. Did we really need shiny chrome reflections?
I'm not sure which map I dread the most, maybe the Uterus.

grinder, right?
it really has been that long? seems so new still, since i've only seen it maybe 5-10 times.

Hell yeah we need new maps! But the map issue around here has always puzzled me. For instance, how come we can't pull a map from the AvA or SEA arenas and slap them in the MA once in awhile? :headscratch:
As for me making a map? I'd love to but I don't have the time, energy or know how. Hell, I can't even make a skin. Maybe HTC or someone in the know could make a tutorial video on how to go about map making.

If I'm not mistaken there are tutorials out there, not videos but written tutorials for basic map making, by mr.midi, I think it's on the wiki

I'll be making a Google map soon. Does that qualify?

+1. And then some. Rangers AvA maps should be at least tested for compadibility in the MA's. It would make a world of difference.

seriously? we have 3 countries in the MA. every special event /ava map I've seen is 2 country.
-
There are some outstanding maps used in the AvA and in scenarios that could have their historically accurate base positions removed and a tri-pie of bases plopped on instead. If that can't be done I'd like someone to explain as to why. To me that would be the easiest to do, the map and terrains are already done, just shake the bag and rearrange the bases.

As long as it shows maps to cheeseburgers, sure why not? :D

Yes, Grinder was given to us in January 2011. Had been up about 15-18 times since then. But being a small map, it's usually done pretty quick. Last week it was up for about 21 hours

:lol Are YOU serious? A map is a map (terrain). It seems to me that how the fields are assigned would be a minor detail easily fixed. Definitely less time consuming then making a whole new map.

uptown, you are correct that it would be a small detail, however you have to position those bases as a Terrain Creator. Those bases have to have no bias and be absolutly fair to every team. Then there's the GV bases, the Factories and everything else. Even the terrain itself can have no bias. Have a chain of mountains in one area that will be the boundry between two teams? 'Well why doesn't the boundy between team 1 and team 2 have a boundy, its unfair!'. This is what a Terrain Creator has to put up with. Having tried my hand I realise it is much more difficult than most people give it credit for.

When your in the air the map means little.
It means a lot. It can make a world of a difference on the number and type fights you can get. Just take the difference between having a large map like TAGMA or a small map like Mindanao during off hours with only 50-70 players online.
Some maps generate a steady stream of medium to high altitude bombers. SFMA has the eternal A1-19 furball no matter what time of day is, while in the western country on Trinity you can have a lot of trouble to find any air battle that's worth it's name. Fighting over huge mountains with a lot of canyons is way different from maps with a lot of water and frequent CV battles.

This should be stickied and quoted anytime people ask why they don't 'Just use the AvA maps!'

We're supposed to pay for the game AND make the playing field as well? That's like paying McDonald's for lunch but having to cook the burger yourself. :headscratch:

The map is irrelevant. The fight is the only thing that matters.

The frequency and nature of fights depend a lot on map setup.

If your fighting just go to the fight. If your not fighting then you may have issues with maps.

One of the most ignorant statements I have read in a long time.
-

It certainly can. However, by and large dedicated furballers barely notice the map beyond texture changes. Some maps promote certain kinds of fights and might funnel players into one area rather than spread them out over a wide front, but a fight is a fight is a fight.
-

At US primetimes, yes. As a dedicated furballer I could always find a fight.
Try it when being stuck on a particular country on a large map with on 50 people on... On midnanao or other small maps with a similar base layout, I can still find a fight... on Trinity, I might better log off when I happen to be on the western country.
And there are palyers who are not dedicated furballers and still fight. This isn't the only valid gaming mode.
And all that is the reason why the generalized statement "map doesn't matter" is only true for a limited number of players.
-

As a furballer, I didn't and don't really care about other gaming modes. No offense to those who enjoy them of course, and for them the map holds more relevance, but for me the only real issue was how long it would take me to get to the action.
And all that is the reason why the generalized statement "map doesn't matter" is only true for a limited number of players.
It's called hyperbole. If the map truly didn't matter, we'd have air starts and three bases all equidistant from one another.

its the new age of gaming.............. give me, give me, give me........
I remember a time when the map never changed, stayed the same for years....... did BigWeek ever change........ not that I can remember....... and noone ever complained about iirc.....
I never really undetstood the new map whines myself, all it is is terrain to fly over and fight over........... and maybe sometimes capture perhaps
the main reason of not being able to use the AvsA maps and some FSO/scenario maps is the frame they are based on mostly...... 1024? for MA's and the smaller AvsA and some FSO/scenarios are based on 256 or 512, again iirc ( every map built has 3 countrys, it will not work with only 2 countrys, got to have 3, regardless of where the map is being used/hosted .... that is how HTC has set it up/designed it ) just saying.....

I wouldnt say ignorant just not very eloquent. The point is, shuff who wants to fly 40 mins to find a fight when you could be only flying 5 mins? Like TC its a gimmie gimmie culture now

A new map keeps the game fresh. Why have new planes or new models of planes?
I am questioning HTC's policy of leaving the map making to AH subscribers instead of dedicating an employee to maps. In the early years it was reasonable because the income was less and the need for new planes was great. But we have a pretty full roster of planes now.
Give us more variety with new map features please.

we have a new map, "grinder", and people race to reset as quickly as possible everytime it's up.

Nonsense!

if the map editor were as friendly as most games it would be a great advantage to this game. However it only crashes my machine and the few times I was able to get it to open it was heads or tales as to what to do even with an out dated tutorial per the specific version of the editor that I had. So....

I normally take off into a fight. I'd rather up and fight... not waste time climbing. Many maps sre ok for that.. except when they have too many gv bases... pushes the Planes farther apart.

No it won't, all you'll see is the horde rolling base after base like they do now.
There is nothing wrong with the maps, it how they are used that is the problem.

exactly :(
I'm too tired to dig back into the past, but Hitech has said he wouldn't hire someone to make new maps because he'd have them working on other things instead. I'm ok with that. HTC does a pretty good job with keeping the new stuff rolling in. I'd rather see the score/perk system reworked to "guide" players to play more of a combat game, where winning the fights/battles is as important as taking bases to win the map.

5 mins? that's 12 to 14k @ 160 ias + or - . Insert quarter. Play the arcade: the essence of take off/twr and repeat ad nauseum.

Be careful what you wish for. :old: There are two all-water terrains already on the server. Bum bum bummmmmmm !

Nonsense!
Not nonsense at all. Its common sense.
If I knew all the map names by heart, I can tell you right off the bat where the heart of the action is going to be. Its like that for several reasons but mostly for the conveinence that a player can get into the action.
I have maps that I like and maps that, if they are up I will just log and wait for it to reset. For the most part, eyecandy is a privelage and not my right but it would be nice to add some new terrains like snow, desert just to break up the monotony.
Our old squaddie submitted some maps a while back and they were rejected. Although I was impressed, unfortunatly HTC wasnt and I respect the decision but perhaps of just rejecting them, maybe dedicate an arena just for new maps as a tester prior to putting them into the regular MA rotation.
-
if the map was so irrelevant, why would we have a thread asking for new ones every week?
It seems we have people in here that know better what the players want, even if that's the opposite of what these players say :aok
-
MA map design can make a big difference to player enjoyment. For instance there are maps with no CVs, which is not something I like. Then there are maps with very few spawn points, something which GVers hate. There are also maps with very long front lines which tend to spread play out too much in off peak times, making it hard to find a good fight. There are maps with the opposite problem of having only one or two choke points where you can find a fight, which can cause hording.
AVA and special events maps have a different set of requirements to MA maps and are completely unsuitable. In most cases it would be quicker to start from scratch than to try and modify one. If anyone is curious about what exactly is required for an MA terrain, there are a couple of sticky threads in the terrain editor forum on the subject.
-

I dont mind climbing out or having to go more then a sector to find a fight , I usually end p running into a like minded red guy somewher along the path.

i love USRanger's maps!
-
Instead of wanting HTC to employ someone, or just flat begging someone to make a new map...
Why don't a coalition of players get together to turn out new maps????
I bet if 4 or 5 of the best got together they could churn out an epic quality map in a short time. Someone working on the design, someone working on the terrain, someone working on placing objects ect. ect. ect.
If you guys got together I bet that map would be the best map on the server. And I have no doubt that HTC would drop it in the rotation.
