Title: Does anyone like cleaning multiple guns?
Post by: ToeTag on September 04, 2012, 11:56:04 AM
The reason I ask is it can take most of the day scrubbing and running patches through you're rifle after a day at the range.  Does anyone know of an easy fast way to clean their gun / guns? I mean really clean.  No residue on the patch when done!  If so please share.  It stinks and is a mess.

I do it the way we learned in the military. Give your weapon a good cleaning, repeat three days in a row.

That is what it feels like. Only with 4 guns it takes 4 times as long.

We've got these where I work...never used one though...they work good? I have a bunch of guns and I agree it takes a while to clean them all.

Bore snakes are good for a quick clean but run a clean patch through and it will not come out totaly clean after you ran a snake. If you have heavy copper fouling the snakes won't work very well either.
Something like M-pro 7 works well but it's made to soak the bore for a period of time to release the deposits.

   Nothin beats elbow grease.  :old:

I have a boresnake for each caliber, but I don't use them for after range cleaning.  I use them between loads when I'm working up loads, especially if changing powders.  Also to clean any lead out of a barrel if I'm using cast loads and have any leading.  After a day at the range, I just have an old towel draped over the ottoman, put a movie on, and go to cleaning.

If it still shoots why do you have to clean it?  :noid  Got my dad's '06 for Christmas that he's been killing deer & elk with for >50 years. Still shoots good. took it apart 'cuz it was filthy. When I look the stock of...ewwww! I cleaned it really well & asked him how long it had been since it had a good cleaning. He said with a grin, "Still shoots good".  :D  Probably never.... :huh.

I suppose you can shell out a lot of cash for a large ultrasonic cleaner.  It would make cleaning very easy. :)

I personally find cleaning my weapons soothing. I dont like anyone else cleaning them, but practice has helped me with time. Ill clean a few guns in an hour or so and they are all sparkling inside and out with a little rem oil to keep things moving smooth. I go through a lot of q-tips and hoppes to get them to a level of cleanliness Im comfortable with.

^ This.  I used to spend a lot of time at my computer here and for the longest time had my gun cleaning mat set up on my desk and inbetween loading screens I'd take my pistol apart and put it back together. Or clean it while watching youtube videos. (If you can do this 5 times in one loading screen, its time to upgrade your computer.) :D
It's something to do and it is very nice and relaxing, like back when I was in JROTC and would spend the afternoon shining my boots.

Now that that forum post has snared me into playing Airsoft and I've switched from AEG's to realistic GBB's. (The internals are so similar to real guns it's scary)  I usually come home from playing most of the morning, get all my gear put away, sit down with some food and flip the TV on while I clean out my guns and oil them back up.
Grab a shower and head off to work.

I cant stand cleaning them.

That's why if "things" ever kick off, im using my rifle to take someones* rifle ammo & food, off someones* corpse. Anything that's not bloody (cloths) or bullet ridden is coming with me to be depleted. Till i am depleted.

Get ready for it.  :rock

I love cleaning my guns. I routinely clean them even if they haven't been shot. Every couple weeks I clean two or three, it keeps them clean and rust free.

I usually throw in a movie or turn on some good tunes.

I cant believe that someone hasn't come up with an easy way to clean guns...I hate it.. I spend more time cleaning than shooting.

HMMMMM....Maybe some photos soon  :devil

This is why I only shoot AT-4s that way no cleaning involved.

OK, so let me pose a question.  I spent all day prototyping an idea that I have had for about a week.  It works.  If you could shoot all day, come home drop your gun in a stand and have you're gun cleaned automatically would you buy one of these?  If so what would you want to pay for it?  Cheap market research here.

No dirty hands or clothes.
No messing with solvents.
Just done in about 15 minutes.
Portable for use at the range.

Personally no. But as I said I dont like anyone else cleaning my guns. I'm the one behind the sights and I dont want the guy in front of my sights to still be there when I pull the trigger because the gun wasnt maintained properly. (This is all hypothetical. And my personal crazy opinion.)

Not sure how much I would be willing to spend on it, but probably would use one. (Would still go over them myself afterwards though, I'm picky about the cleaning that way  :D)

Multiple guns?

Working on a Boy Scout camp allows me to enjoy that task regularly.  25 or so .22's, a dozen shotguns, and a handful of muzzle loaders.

It's a real treat cleaning the ML's each week in the summer after the scout's spend an evening firing them.

It sure makes it seem easy when all I have to clean are my own personal firearms, seldom more then 3 at a time.

It never takes me a long time to clean my weapon, also; if you're going to be shooting again in the near future, you don't want it "out of the box" clean. It'll jack up your accuracy.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Shouldn't take over an hour (if that) to clean a single rifle.

May I suggest a different hobby?

If you don't want to clean your guns, don't shoot them.  If you don't shoot them.......

Basically, I was taught from very early on that if you fire your weapon, clean it (I learned how to shoot on a 53 hawken before I got my first 22 when I was 5).  For those who say that if it fires and is accurate, leave it alone, good luck if you ever actually NEED it.

I am a meat eating son of a semp , but more toothpicks go into cleaning my firearms than cleaning my teeth.  As well as a tonyjoey -load of q-tips.

I enjoy cleaning my firearms.  I know they ALL function, every time.

wow....some replies make no sense at all...but thanks for the honest answers.  I had no idea that folks prefer to go the long route when cleaning.  Maybe a form of therapy on a Sunday....  This would mainly just be a bore cleaner.  It would not clean the action on semi autos.

I've also heard a lot of conflicting info about the proper way to clean the gun.  IE get it totally clean vs. leave a little behind.

As to cleaning a gun in an hour I have never gotten this result.  My cleaner recommends a 30 minute soak.  With ten passes to get it done that's 5 hours between squirts.

What cleaner can you use to get it clean in an hour?  Maybe I'm getting the wrong stuff.

LOl Truth... That's the down side of bringing 6 or more weapons to the range... 3 hours of cleaning them followed by smelling the solvent for several hours more.

Well, we tested the "leave some behind" theory and it works pretty solid. Every rifle (we used twenty M16A2 service rifles all together for the test. 10 fully clean, 10 "left behind") we "factory cleaned", was more inaccurate (especially over longer distances).
