Title: Lacrosse
Post by: Seanaldinho on September 07, 2012, 07:34:58 PM
After much deliberation (with my parents), I will begin playing lacrosse with a somewhat local team soon. I've always wanted to play and after a few sessions with a borrowed stick and a few other guys just messing around between classes, I am fairly decent at least at passing and catching. Anyone else here play? Tips?

I played for 13 years most being multiple seasons winter/spring/summer.

Great sport, good workout and gets intense.

What position you thinking about playing?

Ahhhh Lacrosse,I played for many years and it's 1 of the toughest games going!

As for advice, learn to pick up the ball, even with 1 hand on the stick,it used to be called an indian pickup but who knows these days.

You never mentioned which type you're going to play, field and box are the two types and both have their own rules. Box Lacrosse is played in an arena like a hockey rink and field is played on a soccer type field.

I played mostly box lacrosse as it's a good way to stay in touch with the hockey rink!

Get yourself a good set of pads, make sure they fit well,oh and get the best kidney protector money can buy!

Practice, practice, practice, find a wall and trow the ball and catch it.

i played defence in lacrosse (long stick). it was a blast knock in middy's and attackers around the goal

For advice i would say find a nice brick wall and play catch with it, also do some grounders

My oldest plays lacrosse and has been on a regional travel team for the last three summers; he is 15 and has been playing for 5 years. I have been coaching it for 5 and refereeing it for 4 now. If it was here in Alabama when I was a kid I would not have played baseball in the spring.

As for practice...go look up the Mikey Powell ground ball practice drill on youtube. Get some balls to practice with and get some gloves for when you throw. Also drop me a PM and I can hook you up with the people there in your area to help you get setup with gear and a team for this spring. I do come down and referee in the area around Destin, Gulf Breeze and Mobile.

Im gonna be playing with the Destin Team. My friend just ordered 2 sticks and a pack of balls, he said one stick is mine and half of the balls with the disclaimer Ill pay him eventually haha. Its a Nike Elite Attack Stick.

Only place I wont have pads is the waist down (with one exception). Ive been told by almost everyone to get a rib/back pad.

At least there is a pro league now so it gets more attention.  It looks interesting.

Nike has started to get into it too. Wherever Nike goes there will be more attention.

As you've been told by others about the kidney pad,be sure to get the best you can!

We used old hockey gloves,I suppose these days they have "lacrosse gloves" but we would take the hockey gloves and cut the palm area out and cut strips out of the fingers to leave only the tip area intact. This allows you to feel the stick better,oh and you can place your glove on an oponent and slip your fingers out to get a good hold! :devil

The team will provide helmets, shoulder and arm pads. So the only things Im buying are a mouthguard, rib pad, and a stick which my friend just ordered me. Hence I can afford the nice rib pad that also has back pads.

It is against the rules to have the palms cut out of your gloves in high school or youth lacrosse as it is improper equipment. We as referees do check for those things and it is probably because of the things like the above that happened in the past.

Could you explain the legality of checks to me? I understand that it cant be from behind but other then that I have no idea what makes a check clean and a check dirty.

I suspect this,as I said I suppose they have proper lacrosse gloves these days!

I played in the mid sixties to mid seventies so alot has changed and I played mostly box lacrosse, the only time I played any field lacrosse was in high school. We didnt even have full face protection, only a hockey helmet with no visor or guards.

Oh and referees were an evil necessity....... :devil

Alright just making sure because you cant wear football cleats in soccer (metal studs/front stud). Didnt know if soccer cleats were banned from Lax.
