Funny?......not!
Here in England, many people are experiencing severe difficulties finding sustained employment.
I live in London with my wife and kids. We are IN pretty good shape as I have a trade, good contacts and 30 yrs experience.
Some are not as fortunate. I often visit family in Sunderland and hear from them the struggle it is to find work, get bills paid etc..
Still funny?
88m is a mindblowing que for a chance to provide for your family.

ask yourself how many of those are still in school, all the way up to university (77 million, that includes from kindergarde) . plus we do have lots of families where one of the spouses makes more than enough money to support the other. and there's also those who have money and choose to not work anymore, they live off the interest. I know several of them. plus there's the big cash only employment.
so I guess lots of people still depend on their parents. I am right now supporting my 20 year old son as he's going to college. his mom is supporting my daughter who has a daughter but is also going to school. my oldest son is working and going to school and is helping support his brother and sister. before you start criticizing we all agreed this was the best way to go for us.
my mother and her boyfriend havent worked in almost 4 and 2 years respectively. they both got laid off and cant find jobs because of their age. after my mom used up all her unemployment (her boyfriend refused to apply for it) they both sell stuff at the swap-meet. it's all cash and carry. there's also a big cash economy that I bet a good portion of those 90 million are also part of.

I work in "low income" weatherization, a lot of people are getting on the gravy train by starting a business, and they only report part of their income, now I am not saying everyone is doing this but I have worked on several peoples homes who have a business, all live quite well. Then you have the total dead weight off of our checks are the ones who just dont want to work. One of my clients said " I dont want no mo foin job anyways". So we get to pay for her heat, food, etc. I think that the USA is going to turn into a 3rd world country probably in the next 10 years or so, everything keeps going up and up, but the pay stays the same. Gas here went up 20 cents in a matter of 3 days, that eats up a 3 percent raise. So a lot of people that have to commute to work will be working to pay for gas and nothing else. And food that goes up right along with gas prices. My opinion, all the money they are raising for the campaigns could be better spent if they would get together and do something other than bash eachother. I have to agree there is about 5 or 10 people that run the entire world. :noid :noid

Its going to be a third world country anyway because too many dumb fvcks have an anti-intellectual attitude. We put praise in all the wrong people for all the wrong things... go look at your local high school, they probably care more about football than math.. (Parents included)
Socialism or Capitalism won't save us... its us who don't have any skills and fail to compete internationally and fail to improve ourselves. look in the mirror, you are the loser.

What kind of American government could possibly think it's a good thing to help American citizens!?!?!
Um... :uhoh "Social Welfare" programs provide a short term relief to a long term problem. If the great unwashed masses come to rely purely on the gubment it creates a dangerous setup for those who actually have to pay for these programs, i.e. the taxpayers and the employed. I dont consider this helping at all. Instead it puts an even heavier burden on those who actually make the money that funds these blackhole programs that plunge the nation into even more debt.
-
The long term problem being that poor people exist? That there are worthless people out there who can't or won't work?
I don't see any government fixing that one sadly. You can either try to help them, or say screw them. Plenty of other countries ignore their citizens that live in poverty, but i always had the impression that those are the kind of countries that America is proud to be better than *shrug*
-
say screw them
this gets my vote

I work at a grocery outlet- that would be, a store that sells damaged/overstocked/out of code foods- foods that people generally don't want- at discount prices.
I think it's fair to say that the people who shop at my store a generally 'economically disadvantaged'. A good portion of them are pretty... destitute, to the point that they rely on foodstamps to buy their groceries.
Generalizations are pretty mediocre forms of explaining scenarios, that's true. However I would say that the majority, probably a vast majority of people who rely on foodstamps and come into my store are regular, kind, friendly, decent, etc. people who've just fallen on hard times. Lots of them even have jobs but just can't support themselves on that job. Actually one of my coworkers was on foodstamps for a long time. There are other people who come in who are in some way or another obviously disabled to the point where it makes it difficult to find a job to support themselves on.
Many people are visibly embarrassed when they tell me they're paying on EBT... I've had to walk lots of people through the process because they've never used the card before.
Another thing is that without these customers, my store would probably go out of business.
Now, there are certainly people who would seem to manipulate the system to some degree (although I can't even say I have any evidence for this, I guess it's more of a reaction at people who act rudely or as if they're entitled or in some other way rub me the wrong way to make me think less of them), but they are fairly few and far between. And realistically... foodstamps are not some sort of gravy train, I'm really not sure where people get this idea. I rarely see that people have more than $4-500 in their allowance (our receipts show the balance), so if you're living completely off of the system somehow, you're realistically stealing what, six or seven thousand dollars a year, that you can only spend on food. Yeah, to a lot of people that's a lot of money, but if you want to talk about stealing from the government (or even stealing out of an individual's pocket), there are people who do probably many times more than that on a daily basis. These are the people that are the problem.
The source of contempt for people who rely on foodstamps to eat is certainly... interesting, but whatever it is the contempt itself is very misplaced.

To be honest.

Micheal Moore makes a point.

I think Lady Thatcher said it best regarding socialism:
"The trouble with socialism is that eventually you you will run out of other people's money".
There should be no handouts by the government except those in dire need and only for a very limited time, and those who are truly unable to work and sustain a minimal well being. Otherwise, everyone else has their destiny in their own hands. Get to work, you lazy bastages!!! :aok
The world will soon be like the bulk of the Indian reservations in the US: no knowledge of how to take care of themselves because there will be no incentive to do so. Hence the desire of the left to fortify socialism in the US (and the world). As soon as **everyone** understands that there will always be those who have and those who have not, and no matter how many laws are put in to the books equality of luxury will never be absolute. Not everyone deserves a new car, a 50in TV, a boat, a motorcycle, satelite TV, a big house, a high paying job, etc, etc.
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are the ONLY things we are entitled to. All else is tertiary, remember that.
-
My opinion is simple
All essential services should be free (within reason) to a taxpaying citizen. Taxes go to defense, healthcare, water, electricity etc etc.
If one does not pay their taxes, due to unemployment, unemployment agencies will FIND people a job, and tell them "go to it". If they refuse to work...and hence don't pay tax... they receive no support of any kind from the government.
^^
A capitalist society with a social conscience. A government which gets out what it puts in. And can turn a profit by the hard work of its citizens. Citizens are entitled to what they get out... because they are one of many who put into it... those who don't put in.... don't get paid out... simple.
A nation where someone is free to say, do and think as they wish, conduct business and work without fear of repression or subjugation.
America was founded on the basis of freedom, we all know the saying freedom isn't free, well I think people should take that more to heart than they do.
-
And realistically... foodstamps are not some sort of gravy train, I'm really not sure where people get this idea.
Ok lets put this int perspective, several of my inlaws are on the gravy train, neither work dont want to dont have to so here is the scoop. breakdown of their (our taxes)
1.)750 a month rent-the company I work for paid it, I know this because I was the manager at the apt
2.)600 a month in foodstamps, I know this because she used to go shopping with my wife
3.)500 a month in "reachup" cash money for toiletries and whatnot
4.)100 a month for lights, if they ran short on cash(reachup) the company I work for would pay their light bill this happened frequently
5.)100 a monthfuel assitance, even though they had heat included in rent they could get money(cash) that was supposed to go towards their lights
and this for a grand total of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2050!!! per month!!!!!!!!
now what do you bring home a month?????? for going to work everyday, busting your arse. and they get to stay home with their kids, go fishin, hunting, snowmobiling, playing facebook, or whatever. I see this sort of thing everyday just about. so thats how I come to the conclusion that this is the gravy train. and thats all out of our paychecks, not theirs. I am not saying that people dont need help, it does happen but, people have made careers out of welfare. I have no problem if someone needs a hand thats what its there for, but all the people like my inlaws make it so if someone that works needs it they cant get it, trust me I know this FIRST hand. Oh yeah and most of the clients I see smoke a pack of marbs a day

yeah but now multiply that by say 300000 people stealing money on the lowside, about 60% of the probably 250 homes I work in steal money(lie to get assistance)

I honestly am a proponent of ancient democracy.
Citizenship should be granted only to those who contribute to the nation. Tax Payers are Citizens. In times of war or national emergency, every citizen must be ready to take up arms in defense of the nation, or assist in any way possible in regards to the crisis.
All citizens, influential or not, MUST, and I cannot stress this enough, MUST, have a say in how things are proceeding. The popular vote should be precisely that. Populares Sufferage, in short, if we want a President (PM for Australia and GBR). It shouldn't be seats, or electorates or anything. It should be Seats in the house, representing the people of a respective district, who are voted by 51% OR HIGHER majority into their office. This ripples up through a party system into TWO CANDIDATES for a presidency\ PMship who won that position BECAUSE MORE THAN HALF, of the peoples registered voters (WHICH AS A CITIZEN YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BE!!!!!!) have stated support.
Citizenship - "the state of being vested with the rights, privileges, and duties of a citizen."
-
yeah but now multiply that by say 300000 people stealing money on the lowside
A little under 7.4 billion dollars.
For example, the famous Madoff ponzi scheme robbed investors of 18 billion dollars by court estimates.

I was unemployed for 3 years. I survived on my retirement and unemployment with the aid of a couple of pensions, very small pensions. When I finally found a job I had to borrow $15 for gas to get to work. I was broke, beyond broke. Wiped out my life savings and ran my credit cards to the max. I didn't waste time feeling sorry for myself. I knew being in my 50s it was a tough sell and then I was way overweight. I lost a bunch of weigh (need to lose more) and studied and passed the CPA exam. I knew I had some value and hung on to that belief.
Finally I got a job at Walmart. Worked there for 3 months and then found the job I've always wanted in a solid industry. That was almost 9 months ago. Since then I've paid down my credit cards by over $4,000 dollars and increased the payments on my house. I've also purchased a new TV (old one was stolen) and built a new computer. LOL. I guess the important stuff first. This past week I spent $500 fixing up the Jeep and prior to that a couple of new tires. Altogether that's about $800 and all paid for in cash. Didn't touch a nickle of debt.
I never thanked the Government for anything. This was their mess. I went to school so I would never be unemployed. So much for that thought.
My advice to anyone unemployed is take what you can get. You don't want 3 years of no work history.
-

but how are you going to do that?
force the corporations to make LESS money for the shareholders that they bend over backwards for, by forbidding them to outsource to the cheapest possible bidder? that's not going to happen, those big corporations own the government through donated $$$ etc
the current US administration made one of the only attempts to keep jobs in the hands of US citizens in recent memory, by bailing out the auto companies, but they don't seem to have got any credit for it - quite the opposite in fact

so true now we hire illegals to do the work Americans USED to do for say 18 an hour and illegals do it for 6 and hour, all out industry jobs get sent over seas because its cheaper then we buy it back from there for double what we would have paid for it to begin with. Homegrown labor?? whats that, seems like noone wants to get their hands dirty anymore.
-
most people who are so quick to look down on those on welfare are pretty careful to document those "business dinners" so they can deduct them on their taxes. most of us are on welfare one way or another. that is what deductions are.

That's about where we are at now but it's the fault of those not willing to work or demanding wages above their experience. The jobs are out there but the American Ego is larger than the salary.
Lately I've been watching the people in front of me in grocery checkout lines buying things I can't afford on food stamps and loading up the back of their expensive SUV's (usually Lexus or Beemer). That drives me nuts!
-
I tell you what I would do.
I would make it ILLEGAL..... for an Non American company to own American Land.
I would make it ILLEGAL..... to hire any migrant without a LEGITIMATE workers VISA.
All foreign companies wishing to buy and sell in the USA will have to LEASE land, and pay rates on said land, DIRECTLY to the owner of said land, if that land is not owned by an individual and is in fact owned by the state. The money will go DIRECTLY to the US Government.
Importing of workers without VISA... ILLEGAL.
etc..

lol, that's cute
Before a law like that even got to the table, every foreign company that for some whatever reason needed to own American land would have a holding company or a subsidiary or something like that in New Jersey.
I would make it ILLEGAL..... to hire any migrant without a LEGITIMATE workers VISA.
This is pretty cute too, I'm fairly sure you need more paperwork than a visa to work legally in the United States already (more like a working permit/green card).
Importing of workers without VISA... ILLEGAL.

It already is... I'm not really sure you understand what a visa is anyway...

they go by how many kids you have and they have 3 living with them. Funny thing was, was they still had NO food lmao, and my wife only spends about 400 a month. Vermont is supposed to be one of the easiest states to abuse the system from what I have been told. I guess it just doesnt work for me though, our apt got closed by the state last year, for reasons beyond our control we had 24 hours to get all belongings out, what was left inside stayed and if we were caught inside it was trespassing. My wife, daughter and I were homeless for almost 5 months before our mortgage finally went through and we got denied any help, I was paying almost 100 a day to stay in a hotel, plus food. but anyways, even 250 dont go very far on food anymore, almost $4 for a gallon of milk here. :cry pretty crappy
-
Just to weigh in on the visa thing - not only do you require a visa to enter the US, you ALSO require a green card/resident alien card to work here. Ask me how I know :D
And yeah, it cost me a wedge, and took over a year to come through, but it was worth it.
Wurz
-
Do you know if you need a greencard to work... for example, part time, if you're a student? I've always wondered that.

I was on Food Stamps for 6 months. I had absolutely no money when I applied. I tell you the first time I bought my own food I told my Mom it was a traumatic event. Now it is really great not depending on the the the Oh idiots who caused this mess. Like I said why should I thank the people who caused this.
Where I work now they have jobs that pay between $17 and $19 an hour. When I was hired they brought in 4 others with me. Three of them put their heads down on the table and slept during orientation. They last around 2 weeks. Incredible! The government just makes it too cushy to stay at home, especially for those with no motivation.

Depends on what you call help. You can give them fish to support them or teach them to fish so they can support themselves.
Handouts are not supportive of the people. It only ingrains getting something for nothing.

Some folks really like to point a finger while sitting on top of a high horse.
Personally I have no problem with food stamps being handed out to those in need. Most Americans don't realize that everyone in america who also eats is taking advantage of government subsidized food.
This post makes me worry less about socialism wreaking havoc on the infallible system of capitalism, and worry more about the influence of government brain voodoo on those who struggle with critical thinking.

yes it is because my family is one of those who need it. funny how my parents are disabled and i work two jobs currently trying to keep a roof over our heads. so please dont consider 100% of this as people cheating the system <S>
Some people need it. More just don't work. The thing is, the govt would rather put those unemployed people on welfare and food stamps to "prove" how valuable their programs are, than to remove regulations and red tape that prevents business from giving them jobs. The govt offices in charge of the welfare programs like food stamps are graded on how many people they give food stamps to! So of course they're going to try everything they can to expand their programs instead of working to get those people jobs so they can get OFF the welfare program. Declining welfare roles means some govt employee may be out of a job.
It's pretty simple to keep this going when the president loves nothing more than being able to brag about doubling the amount of food stamps his administration is handing out. Increasing the number of people receiving aid is considered a good thing by the current administration. This is a problem because as it has been said over and over, at some point you run out of other people's money. The US ran out a long time ago.

:noid :noid
Funny but if starting a business was so easy then everyone would start one. People who have no business are the ones who think it's so easy.
I have no problem feeding those who can't or won't work..... for that they should live where and how those who pay their way feel they should. No TVs, no stereos,,,, nothing fancy as in clothes or car or living conditions. Just enough to survive. Those who don't like it can step out of the line and support themselves.

I'm being taxed into the ground. Then when this healthcare crap passed I have to pay more for my employees healthcare but they get less coverage than they had before. Now the higher cost helps cover some deadbeat that has a ticket to vote.

"The Labor Department counts a person as not in the civilian labor force if they are at least 16 years old, are not in the military or an institution such as a prison, mental hospital or nursing home, and have not actively looked for a job in the last four weeks.

Soooo, by their definition they are including the 49,000,000+ people over the age of 65... or in other words "retirees". Last I remember the "babyboomer" generation was starting to enter retirement age and they make up 26% of the total population. 10,000 new retirees everyday since 1/1/11. Of course there's a new record and there will probably be a new one every year for the next 17 years, especially considering the increase in life expectancy.

That is the single reason I didn't start my own business last year. Way too much documentation required for the business model I had planned on using. I wouldn't even be able to buy copier paper without sending a 1099 to staples. Too bad, my business would have needed at least one employee almost immediately.
I don't have any options other than running it "off the books" as a cash-only operation, and at this point I'm not willing to do that. Too much to lose and nothing to gain except hatred from those who envy business owners and want free stuff, and possible prosecution from the govt. So I can't do it. Too bad, I had been looking forward to transitioning from a taxpayer funded job to a business that created work, jobs, and inherently valuable things out of essentially nothing.

EDIT: Are all of you dealing with many-many small job contractors?
Granted I just deal with a very small set of contractors but I just have them fill out a w7 and then I have my accountant fill out the 1099-misc with some specialized tax software...
I guess it can get a little confusing if you have many different contractors all doing tiny jobs...

I hope you folks realize that there's a large percentage of military families on food stamps/welfare..
And be so kind as to read the article before you put me over the lava pit, please read..
http://www.vamortgagecenter.com/blog/2012/05/09/why-are-so-many-military-families-on-food-stamps/ (http://www.vamortgagecenter.com/blog/2012/05/09/why-are-so-many-military-families-on-food-stamps/)
Also, I believe we should lower the standard for who gets assistance.. There are far too many people who are way beyond needing foodstamps/wic/etc who are allowed to have it because they meet the financial requirements without even having to scam the system.. The financial requirements are way too loose.. Hell, my wife and I do pretty well and I bet we could get on WIC if we wanted just because we have two kids.. I'm for helping people out.. A modern, civilized does so one way or the other.. Whether it's through charity or through government help, or both.. Unfortunately, now you have generations of families how are taken care of, womb to the tomb.. If you ever saw documentary The Wonderful Whites of West Virginia, that father of those children had them all on disability or Social Security when they were just children..

WIC here in vermont everyone gets while women are preggo, then they go by income and the more you make the less you get. One thing that stands out to me at work is that we had an all staff meeting and a family service worker was reading this letter from a client, the client had dug herself into a hole with her car, lights, phone and fuel. she drank all of her money away, so SEVCA the company I work for, helped her out of her problem, no harm done everyone is entitled to SOME help right? so 3 weeks go by or something and the lady is BACK, same problem same reason, they bail her out again, this went on several times, then the lady got canned from her job and now shes a leech off of our paychecks. The family service worker was crying as she read the letter, its people like that that get me . generations get dependant on the system. I have no problem with a "helping hand" persay. As far as the military goes, those are they families that SHOULD be taken care of. Anywho I see gas this morning was at 4.009 up from 3.729 just las week. :ahand :ahand

Tough situation we are in, eh?
In a fair market, supply and demand would dictate the price of labor. Are we at the point that a worker has no choice but to work at a exploited rate? If so, is that fair? The business owner is the one holding the risk of success or failure.
