This week, I are been mostly watching Westerns, well two so far: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and next The Good the Bad and The Ugly.
I was wondering if you Americans had favourite westerns that they would recommend? Age doesn't really matter but I'm not so keen on recent films. Better older than newer then.
I have never watched Shane for instance, is that a good one? :old:
-
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly may just be the best western ever made.
You may also like High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider. Both versions of True Grit are excellent, but I recommend you watch the original first. Rustler's Rhapsody is another great western parody, but not as good as Blazing Saddles.

Outlaw Josey Wales :aok
-
Outlaw Josey Wales :aok
Absolutely... how could I forget that one.

Ya didnt, you were just busy posting other incredible movies :aok
-
the 3 you already listed are my favourites I think :)
I watched 3:10 to Yuma a while back and found it pretty enjoyable, although it's not an old school Western
it's worth watching just for Charlie Prince :aok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCm5qePz8JI

Many good westerns, red sun is an old fav,if you like Charlie Bronson.
High noon is a good Gary Cooper western Or maybe the classic Stage coach.
Burt Lancaster did a pretty ggod western call Valdes is comming, does a 1500 yd shot with a sharpes,I learned about the speed of sound from that flic!
I highly recommend Red Sun,a east meets west duster that never grows old for me,Gilda is the only movie I've seen more times than Red Sun!
:salute

Stagecoach
Shane
The Wild Bunch
The Magnificent Seven
Destry Rides Again
Fort Apache

I'll give you Stagecoach and maybe Red River.
Man, It's been a long time since I watched some of those oldies, perhaps a Western revival is in order at the hizzy.
-
GB&U isn't bad. It's just down the list a ways.
-
ok Im not a merkin but ... once upon a time in the west :aok
-
Off hand I can think of Red River, Winchester '73, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, My Darling Clementine, Rio Bravo, The Searchers, The Man from Laramie.
Old westerns seem to almost always be more enjoyable than the newer productions. I did enjoy the recent remake of 3:10 to Yuma, but I've never seen the original.

Since you are enjoying the "man with no name" trilogy, I recomend you watch Once Upon A Time In The West, which is also directed by Sergio Leone.
Shane is very good.
Don't knock the modern western, some of which are fantastic.
Appaloosa, 3:10 to Yuma, Unforgiven, and Tombstone are all worth watching.
Also worth checking out are the shows Deadwood, and Hell On Wheels.
-
probably going to get flamed but....Tombstone, if not just for Doc Holidays character.
-
Man Clint Eastwood is just plain awesome, my dad had a riot when I came home from college just to watch all of his westerns and John wayne.
-
Jeremiah Johnson
The Searchers
The Cowboys
Lonesome Dove (The original mini-series. Not technically a movie, but one of the best Westerns ever!)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Kinda seventiesish but its a classic)
Macabe & Mrs. Miller
A Man in the Wilderness
Little Big Man
-
My favorite old Western is Man who shot Liberty Valance.
Out of the newer ones you can't beat Open Range.

I agree with AKWabbit
If I could only watch one western ever again it would be Lonesome Dove the mini series. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are excellent in it.
-
Wow, great suggestions! :aok
I've seen some of these, I am very keen on Mr. Eastwood's work. Always so, conclusive :lol Also Jeremiah Johnson and Little Big Man are favourites.
-
I know it's set in Australia but I've got to add it....Quigley Down Under with Tom Selleck.
-
Cant watch Cat Ballou without picturing Janie wearing a little NVR helmet on her head. Probably my faves are Shane, Unforgiven, The Wild Bunch, 2nd True Grit "sorry Duke", and Jeremiah Johnson. The War Wagon was pretty good too.

Unforgiven - Clint Eastwood as director (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDAXGILEdro)
And the trailer doesn't do this one justice: The Last Outlaw w/ Mickey Rourke
(not so old, but great gunslingers)
-
anything with The Duke :aok

Might have missed it, but Broken Trail.
Wiki
Broken Trail is a 2006 Western miniseries directed by Walter Hill and starring Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church.[1] Written by Alan Geoffrion, who also wrote the novel,[2] the story weaves together two historical events—the British buying horses in the American West in the late 19th century and Chinese women being transported from the West Coast to the interior to serve as prostitutes—along with a series of Western vignettes.
Filmed on location in Calgary, Alberta,[3] the miniseries originally aired on American Movie Classics as its first original film. Broken Trail received Emmy Awards for Outstanding Miniseries, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie (Robert Duvall), and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries (Thomas Haden Church).[4]

My Darling Clementine is still my favorite Western.

This is a must see Shida.
-
Lonesome Dove needs to make your list. It's definitely one of the greatest westerns ever as well as a family friendly production.
Aside from that my favorites are...
Unforgiven starring Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman
Young Guns also with an all-star cast is considered one of the truest stories of Billy the Kid.

Excellent mini series. Silverado is another I have in my collection.

Clint is the king of one liners, and his best are the spaghetti westerns.
Outlaw Josey Whales........... best western of all time IMO
-
No one mentioned any of the "Trinity " movies , you dirty skunks .
-
Rio Bravo
Unforgiven
-
"Once upon a time in the west"
The opening scene at the train station is a defining moment in cinema history. A must watch on a LARGE screen and good quality high volume sound system.
-
Almost forgot Blazing Saddles

The director is keen on sounds. Long intro not one word. I was spellbound the first time I saw it.
-
the opening scene is just one of many great things about that movie, Henry Fondas performance is another.
... and for something a little different, an australian western - The Proposition :aok
-
Not really a western, but Ride With The Devil is pretty good. More of a Civil War pic.
-
And of course lets not forget Brokeback Mountain.
-
Anything with Clint Eastwood is gold, IMO. Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, and Unforgiven are definitely three of my favorites.
Tombstone is one of my favorite movies of all time, but it's filmed in a lot more modern style and feels 'slicker' than most westerns. YMMV. If you like the more modern feeling movies, Young Guns is another good one.
The Lonesome Dove original miniseries with Duvall and Jones is superb, though not as action oriented as many westerns. Ignore anything with the Lonesome Dove name on it beyond that though.
Wiley.
-

Never watched it never will..............
-
In no particular order...
Destry Rides Again
Goin' South
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Once Upon a Time in the West
Blazing Saddles
The Missouri Breaks
The Ballad of Cable Hogue
Silverado
The Magnificent Seven
-
Downloading like mad. Anyone else been watching Westerns encouraged by this thread?
-
And of course lets not forget Brokeback Mountain.
:huh
I think Shuffler has a good collection (pg.2). I'd recomend those.
I like John Wayne. He reminds me of my father. Here's a good example of how The Duke gives a one-minute speech therapy lesson.

Well because you posted it, and I was under the impression that you may have thought it was a good movie.
I just didn't want to upset your sensibilities by completely disagreeing with you on the quality of The Quick and The Dead.
I can not over emphasize how bad that movie is.
All movie watchers should avoid what is quite possibly THE WORST western ever made.
Seriously, it's bad.

Roger Moore is the best bond.

I have to reply to this thread
Tom Horn.......Steve McQueen
Pat Garret & Billy the Kid.....Kris Kristofferson and James Coburn
I've enjoyed every movie mentioned in this thread.
-
I would even throw the series Firefly into this mix.
Space cowboys FTW!
-
Is "Dallas" a Western or "Little house on the Prairie?
-

Actually there are several in that series based on the Larry McMurtry books. Dead Mans Walk, Streets of Laredo and Commanche Moon are all worthwhile, but yeah, the "Return to Lonesome Dove" etc are just cheap ripoffs.
-
any body ever read the series with the "Sacketts" by loie Lamor.... i think was his name
-
You're close, it's Louis L'Amour, I've read a few of his books, not that particular series though.
-
What about: 'A Man Called Horse' and 'Chato's Land', or are they more Indian than Cowboy? :old:
-
My Grandma has every book that Louis L'Amour wrote.
To me they all read the same.
His autobiography, on the other hand, is a work of true western art.
A masterwork of writing with concerns to the single man living hard times.
Louis L'Amour Education Of A Wandering Man
A must read.
EDIT: In order to understand Louis L'Amour you must read this book.

I have a lot of old books from Louis L'Amour. Great author.
Lot of movies based on his stories.
