Google "US sugar tariff". Companies/consumers in the US pay nearly twice the world market rate for sugar cane sugar because of the US sugar tariff. In order to compete US companies are forced to use corn syrup or beet sugar. This is the reason why many candy makers (Life Savers, Lemonheads, etc) have moved production to Canada. Another reason why I despise the US farming lobbyists.

It has virtually nothing to do with ObamaCare. But I'm sure people will fingerpoint at their own usual suspects, and in this case chances are they'll be at least partially right. There's plenty of blame to go around.
http://management.fortune.cnn.com/tag/gregory-rayburn/ (http://management.fortune.cnn.com/tag/gregory-rayburn/)
I'm no exception; I note from the story how the unions made substantial concessions (thousands of jobs, and millions in benefits) to help Hostess return from bankruptcy in 2009; a while later, then-CEO Brian Driscoll tried to negotiate a $1.5 million base annual salary with a guaranteed $1.95 million if the company failed or if he was fired. The unions raised a stink about it and Driscoll ended up leaving anyway, but new CEO, Greg Rayburn, got the same $1.5 million salary. And during the summer of 2011, as the company's financial situation was crumbling, the top four Hostess execs each received raises of up to 80%. What lousy leadership. And the fleecing that goes on in the name of outside consulting and "advisory services" makes me sick to my stomach.
It's all in the linked story. It just seems like a trainwreck. IMO the big losers are the small guys - the workers who lost their jobs, and the retirees whose defined benefit plan has been underfunded.

If you cannot respect the forum posting rules, do not expect to get a twinkie for it.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. You get the point :D

Don't be so quick to blame it all on the unions. They were asked to take a hefty pay cut after Corporate got a hefty raise. Teamsters went along with the concessions, the Baker's union didn't. If the company hadn't been mismanaged so badly and wound up in bankruptcy, the contract would never have been an issue. There is plenty of blame to be spread around for all concerned.
Twinkies won't be going anywhere...

Wonder Bread! :cry
-
Aesop's fable about the goose that laid the golden egg comes to mind. :old:
-
My father spent his career producing flexible packaging for the bakery industry, and did business with Hostess, including making the "Wonder Kids" bread bags. This isn't the first time Hostess' workers brought them down. There's even a case of employees sabotaging the plant after Hostess recovered from nearly going bankrupt. They've been at the brink on multiple occasions. I guess it's over. :(

It sucks when companies go under like this though.

18,500 Hostess employees lost their job today thanks to 600 hundred of them. Just think of the loss of Federal income. Income tax, Fuel tax, and propably 60+ taxes I'm unaware of. This is a sad day for America, we all lose!
If we just tax Skuzzy more, we can make up for it. This is not the Country I grew up in!

Same here, went to two stores and nothing at all. Can't find a good hoho anywhere around here.
What I really don't get though is why they are recalling all shipments in transit back to the suppliers. You are already liquidating, get the last few pennies out of the product you already have instead of just putting it in the garbage.

You failed to mention the 80% raise the corp gave themselves and the massive mismanagement that got Hostess into bankruptcy. BTW, the CEO gets a BONUS because they are folding.
There is plenty of blame to spread around and it's not all on the union.

I take the blame for the company going bankrupt. I forced my gf to stop buying Twinkies 10 years ago as we both decided to lose some weight. we are heavier now but we still wont eat Twinkies.

The Hostess store just down the street from my house isn't totally empty yet. I might head down there and grab one last box of Twinkies and possibly the last remaining box of HoHo's in Wisconsin.
-
Hurry! My town plus all the surrounding ones are all sold out. Wanted to grab my kids some, but I waited to long. :(

Hostess store here will close for the last time on 11/19.
Major suckage. On two days a week you can get a whole grocery sack of almost expired goodies for a dollar.

Fox reported this morning that mexican bakery giant (Grupo Bimbo), the largest bakery conglomerate in the US (how ironic) is looking at buying the bankrupt company (they tried a takeover in 2007 during the last Hostess bankrupcy). So the brand will probably be saved. On a light note, the Twinkie may be replaced by a sugar filled tortilla and rebranded as the 'Tweenkie'.

Bimbo bought Mrs. Baird's (huge Texas bakery) several years ago. It was just so wrong that kindly old Grandma Martha Baird was replaced by a Bimbo.

One of my favorite childhood memories of Dallas was the fresh baked bread smells wafting through the air.
Dad told me stories about Vernon Baird, who was quite a character. Once they were at a party together, and Vernon was in costume as a Confederate officer. He says to my Dad (who was from Long Island) "Where's your costume?" Dad says "Sir, I left my Union blues at home!" LOL
When Baird sold, I asked "How can Bimbo deliver fresh bread from Mexico?" Bread is actually frozen and thaws in the trucks on the way to stores. Bet you didn't know.

I struggle to know the fine line. I am pretty sure what is going to get me banned. What is safe?
Is it ok to point out that, from an economic point of view these 'labor nirvanas' have been attempted. It was called the Soviet Union, East Germany, etc. The end result was the same...economic destruction, lowered standards of living, collapse.
FA Hayek wrote a book that ultimately earned him the Nobel Prize in Economics: The Road to Serfdom. Truth!

They deserved it for showing those union greedy guys who's who.
"As the company was preparing to file for bankruptcy earlier this year, the then CEO of Hostess was awarded a 300 percent raise (from approximately $750,000 to $2,550,000) and at least nine other top executives of the company received massive pay raises. One such executive received a pay increase from $500,000 to $900,000 and another received one taking his salary from $375,000 to $656,256."
