Who needs guns or tanks anymore? When they get to 900k or more.. planes, tanks, bombs will be obsolete? would a 500kw go 10km? 5000kw go 100km? 500 of these on trucks on boats..... :confused: :eek:

They plan to build a 60kw then a 100kw in the next years.

"A German company has brought us one step closer to the kinds of shootouts only seen in Sci-Fi films. Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Defense recently tested a 50kW, high-energy laser at their proving ground facility in Switzerland. According to the company, the laser passed the test with “flying colours.”
The system isn’t actually a single laser but two laser modules mounted onto Revolver Gun air defense turrets made by Oerlikon and attached to additional power modules. The laser modules are 30 kW and 20 kW, but a Beam Superimposing Technology (BST) combines two lasers to focus in a “superimposed, cumulative manner” that wreaks havoc on its targets.
First, the system sliced through a 15mm- (~0.6 inches) thick steel girder from a kilometer away. Then, from a distance of two kilometers, it shot down a handful of drones as they nose-dived toward the surface at 50 meters per second. The laser’s radar, a widely used system called Skyguard, was capable of tracking the drones through their descent up to three kilometers away.
For its finale, the laser’s ability to track a very small ballistic target was demonstrated. It honed in on and destroyed a steel ball 82mm in diameter traveling at 50 meters per second. The small ball was meant to simulate an incoming mortar round. Rheinmetall says their laser will reduce the time required for C-RAM – Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar measures – to a matter of seconds, even in adverse weather conditions. In fact, weather at the Ochsenboden Proving Ground in Switzerland where the demonstration was carried out included ice, rain, snow, and extremely bright sunlight – far from ideal

Actually, should there ever be a limited-nuke WWIII. Lasers only have to take out the eyes of the occupants inside the vehicles. As a matter of fact we already have people on the ground today with commercially available lasers potentially capable of bringing down aircraft.

Makes for interesting future. I have long thought that in the contest between air power and air defense that technology was going to make it very easy to shoot down planes, missiles, etc. Once that happens then the focus of power projection will shift to GVs.
With GVs there is a technology floating around Youtube etc that 'bends light' around objects, such as vehicles. Both are truly RMAs.

In a real war, those laser guns will be deflected from bulletproof mirrors to send the beams either back to its originating source or away from the intended target.
High energy beams will be sent all over the place causing fires wherever they strike. PSA messages will be broadcast over radio and satellite from Smokey the Bear saying, "Only you can prevent forest fires". With the destruction of buildings and military vehicles, Woodsy the Owl will be adding his PSA to, "Give a hoot and don't pollute." Finally, the wanton destruction will lead to vandalism and theft prompting McGruff the Crimedog with his PSA to, "Take a bite out of crime."
Wars using laser beams will be an enviromentalist nightmare. Stick to swords and shields with the occasional battering ram and catapault. You won't be sued by the EPA.

Systems already exist that take out optical systems tracking aircraft using laser technology. And have so sense the 70s

I believe this type of laser will actually burn through conventional mirrors also. And even if not, an enemy with a perfect mirror finish is going to shine brightly in battlefield, ripe for conventional weapons.

Ceramics is the way to go. They're already in use in modern Chobham armor to resist against HEAT weapons. No laser will penetrate ceramic materials that can resist temperatures as hot as the surface of the sun.

Lasers can cut ceramics they can even draw on it, etch it, cut through it. Some are hotter than the sun's core.

a simple smoke screen would play hell on a laser's beam (visiable or not). dirty up the medium that the beam has to pass through and watch the potential for damage drop dramaticly; then use conventional munitions to destroy the laser tank that is now glowing brighter than a christmass tree in your IR optics due to all the waste heat that builds up from powering and firing such a powerful laser.

Household and industrial ceramics yes, and we're talking single beam lasers here, not arrays of several lasers like the National Ignition Facility. The largest industrial lasers can generate about 1,000 degrees Kelvin of heat, enough to cut steel and other metals.

does it have a rate of fire that allows it to fire like that? If so, then it is a big leap forward compared to all the previous laser weapon systems that were strong enough to destroy main battle armor.

I don't know about the rate of fire but IF it's ready to fire it can probably track and fire with huge accuracy and incredibly fast.

Oh I'm certain it can track and destroy an incoming tank round...once...
But the rate of fire for the laser is probably much less than the rate of fire a standard MBT can achieve
For example: the Airborne Laser System (ALS) is the size of a 747 not because the laser itself is that big, but because the heat management systems and the energy storage systems are that big.

Now granted the ALS can get off a handfull of shots each powerfull enough to destroy a missile but that is all possible because of the large energy storage and heat management systems, and once it does deplete it's stored reserves of energy and/or maxes out its heat dumping capabilities it cannot fire for a very long period of time when compared to how fast events can happen on a battlefield. To sum up, laser weapon systems the size of MBTs are absolutely possible, but because of the size limitations of a MBT chassis these laser MBTs will be severely limited in their rate of fire ability or they will require some kind of secondary support vehicle to be hooked up to help make them a viable threat with today's energy storage and heat sink tech. But who really knows, R&D is happening all the time; maybe a new super high capacity yet physically small energy storage device is right around the corner.
Personally, I think we will start to see laser weapons on the battle field within our lifetime, but they will not be the main assault weapons. Instead they will play a very strong support role. As it is now they are being developed more as anti-air or CWIS type weapon systems, and I think this will be their most viable route.

One technique that I know of is called "controlled fracture" and requires 2 lasers together. This process can cut more than an 1" of ceramic material using a CO2 and Nd:YAG combined.. 1 fractures the other cuts.
Many cutting "lasers" cut with similar actions combining 2-3 different lasers filled with different gasses..O2 Nit xenon...etc
Now if you wanna talk lab lasers look up L. Livermore I think they have the record at the moment of 10mil kelvin or so
I have an interest in Lasers as my best friends father is one of the "Laser Gods" here in the states and they are just cool. His latest patent was for a laser that could could count and program stem cells as the are administered through a catheter.
Here is an old 110v neon laser I brought home the other day to fix ...It's a kit laser from the late 80's. These can still be used in laser array setup testing.... before really getting things dialed in.

Lasers have come along way since then in contrast here is the latest china key chain model 3v that has higher output and I'm sure most of you have seen models for handguns.

Gotta love those HeNe lasers, so simple and fun. BTW Megladon, I worked for a short time at L. Livermore as a laser tech/system operator for the NIF facillity; back when they only had 4 of the eventuall 150 (I think that is the right total. Its been awhile) lasers up and running for early testing.
