Title: Started my first nose art…
Post by: G0ALY on June 01, 2013, 05:58:57 PM
I purchased several sections of C-47 engine cowlings a short time ago. My plan was to put WWII nose art on them and hang them in my garage. While cleaning this cowling, I found that the original olive drab paint was in good enough shape to use.

Since the cowlings are from radial engines, I decided to focus on nose art from P-47s. For the first one, I am doing Don Gentile’s P-47 “Donnie Boy”.

More people know about Gentile’s P-51 called “Shangri-La”, but he also flew a Spitfire and P-47. All of his aircraft featured the same boxing eagle. But the P-47 was called “Donnie Boy” and the spitfire was called “Buckeye Don”.

Here the white nose band has been added and the outline of the nose art has been applied.
I have to give a lot of the credit to my daughter, she is doing the detail work.

I’ll post a photo of the finished work.
I want the 2nd cowling to face the opposite direction. I’m thinking about the logo and cowling colors from the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron. Any other suggestions?

Very nice!  can't wait to see the finished product :)

Seems like you'd want a 56th bird to compete with your 4th

After one day of painting...

My daughter worked on this for about two hours today. We're guessing about 3 more days until it is ready to hang in the garage.

How much do the C-47 cowlings cost?

May i suggest scuffing up the white so it matches the OD.

Otherwise, looks good.

Nefarious, I was looking for parts for our C47 and saw some lots for like 15 pieces for just a few hundred bucks

I have about fifty bucks each in the full sized cowlings, and that includes the gas it took to go get them. But I don’t know if I will ever be able to get a deal like that again.

I ask because painting nose art would really fun to do, especially for more than just a hobby :)

Thanks for the compliments. When my daughter found out that I intended to pay her for the work, she told me she was just hoping that I would grill a bunch of chicken wings as a reward. She quickly and shrewdly negotiated for the money - with a chicken wing bonus.

I’m very happy with how it is turning out. The last thing she will paint is the black outlines, and that will really sharpen the edges up.

Nice job!

As a side note, I reskinned some C-47 cowlings back around 04 and charged almost $5K.  Mind you they were natural aluminum finish and cherry.

Your daughter has a lot of talent; it looks great.  :aok
Now granted; I am kinda biased on this one but, if you are still looking for ideas to paint it would be cool to see the nose art of my grandfather's C47 leaflet bomber done up.

This is where the “Donnie Boy” cowling will go. It will replace an unpainted cowling that I hung on the garage wall. I put that one up there so that I could troubleshoot the mounting process. It also showed me that I needed to shorten the shelf that holds the TV, and I dropped it about fifteen inches.

The 2nd cowling will be on the same wall, but on the left side of the pop machines. I want it to face the center, so whatever nose art we choose with may end up being reversed.

The red chairs are old theater seats. We occasionally spin them around, fix a bunch of snacks, and have a “Movie night” out in the garage. The TV screen may not be the biggest, but the sound system rocks.

My AWESOME Daughter just finished her first nose art!

I will probably hang it in the garage tomorrow.  She is going to do one more for me. But the second one will not be historical. Instead she is going to design it to match my personality. Sort of a ‘fantasy’ nose art. I’m thrilled with how this one turned out, and anxious to she what she can do on her own!
