How many other games than Aces High have survived (let's for argument's sake, say that AH1 and AH2 are the same game) as long? We're nearing 15 years now if I'm not mistaken.
Not only in flight sim genre (is there even more than 100 players on Il2 anymore?), but all games types considered. As far back as Ultima -- really an unlimited, all-time, all-type, all-platform comparo.

Wouldn't EverQuest be up there?
-
Survived as in are still played or as in are still being supported?
EverQuest was released on 3/16/1999 and its most recent expansion was released on 11/28/2012.
Ultima Online was released on 9/24/1997 and its most recent "booster pack" was on 10/12/2010.
WarBirds was released in 1995. I am not sure if it is still being developed though.
There may be non-commercial games with longer support.

Ahhhhh ... parade pee. :lol

Either, I guess?

What... You mean you don't think AH is right there in geriatric company? Anyway, this is totally naive but curious question. I actually couldn't think of anything older than Ultima. Warbirds was "dead" last I heard a couple years ago.
Wouldn't EverQuest be up there?
I dunno.. Is it still played/developped?
Cause AH is relatively still as active on both dev/player side, as ever.

I found a doom server running the other day.

So much for supporting the OP. :headscratch: ;)

Neverwinter Nights still has a gigantic modding community and plenty of servers up last I check. Released in 2002.
Runescape, has been around since 2001, getting updates constantly. Heck, they're making a third version last I heard.

Gran Turismo on playstation consoles since 1997 :rock

You should never have said 'video game', Moot. :P

We going that route, then Mario would seem to top everything. :)
-
John Madden Football would be right up there too in terms of longevity of the franchise but I'm guessing moot meant MMO's.

If that's the case, I saw a working arcade version of this last year in a little greasy spoon on the road:

That list gets longer and longer. I was playing pacman on Google last year and have Pong on my Gameboy.
-
Gran Turismo is one of the longest living simulator besides aces high.
-
Wasn't 'actively supported and updated' part of the criteria, though?
-
Call of Duty is working on it...
We'll see which one outlasts the other. I hope it's AH:)
I have to admit - I have been playing CoD since inception.
-
Long running series is not the same as a continuously supported game. And no, some guy still running a server in his garage does not count as supported.
-
No restrictions... Really just curious. Pacman and the like aren't really comparable, but still interesting context. Like Karnak says above: HTC has been basically unchanged team, if not in vision (Tour of Duty) then in staffing, all the way back to 1999 with basically the same game. Whereas with e.g. CoD you have repeatedly iterated/remixed game and lots of dev team (ie vision?) changes. CoD 2 is not the same animal at all as some of the latest ones, right? :)

It supports my curiosity. That's the only motivation.. :joystick:

I might still have the Excel 2003 version of PacMan somewhere on my hard disk... Apparently there are many more Excel variations available now, but PacMan seems to have been updated to run on Excel 2007...

In judging the longevity of AH you really should include Warbirds, and before that, Confirmed Kill. I believe they were all written by Hitech. Unfortunately, I can't remember when Confirmed Kill came out, but it was way back when Air Warrior was still going strong.
-
Warbirds still has populated arenas.
-
If you drop the word "video" then MUDS are some of the oldest multi-player online games still going!
NANVAENT - (Yes, I am still an immortal with coding rights on the game :) ) since 1993
Muds evolved from the first incarnation at Essex University, England, in 1978. MUD2 has been running since 1985!

CK was released for open beta Memorial Day 1995

did Microsoft abandon flight simulator?
because I had it on my c64 in 1984 or 85

MS still sells Flight Simulator X but I do not think the team is still there and actively developing it.

I contend that new games in a series are new games and shouldn't count for the longest lived video game. They would be counted for longest lived video game series, if you see what I am saying.
MUD2 from 1985 sounds like a contender, if it is still being developed/supported. Just passively running because somebody kept it up doesn't really mean the same thing.

Mario Brothers is still rocking it!!!

Mario Brothers is still rocking it!!!
The majority of Mario titles are no longer supported, Individual games count, not full series.
As series go, Ultima probably wins. EA is having Bioware do a new Ultima game.

I play a 2D cartoon spaceship game called Subspace Continuum, it was released in 1997, company went up with the internet bubble but its been player supported since '00ish.
Popularity is down to about 500-700 players but when I first joined in 01 it was easily 4-5k with a multitude of leagues and zones with different objectives based games. Simple but addicting.

I found a doom server running the other day.
I played pong.
-
I started playing Command & Conquer in 95. Still play it today !

Starcraft has to be considered, especially when numbers are considered. The first one came out in 1998 I think, and it still has tens of thousands of players.
Counterstrike as well, it still has tens of thousands of players daily, and was first modded on the original Half Life game over 13 years ago now.
Aces high is one of the few games that has stood the test of time, I've said this numerous times before as well. There aren't many games that I've stuck with this long, even off and on.
-
One big reason why AH survived this long, in my opinion is that it's the only game HTC has. Other developers milk as much cash as they can from a game for as long as possible until innovation is needed or the game is outdated. They then leave it up to the players to do as they will with (usually by giving away their mod tools) before moving to a newly developed game.
AH is HTC's only choice and correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they can afford to create a new game. So all the resources they have goes into AH.

I don't know about afford or not, but HTC was created to publish and support one game only.

Legends of Kesmai for the win.
Like a dungeons and dragons game.
Originally,
'Islands of Kesmai' version written in 1980?
Wiki it, at one time, I thought I read, it was X's and O's and stuff, like a typed document.
Next it got an update to 2d, sort of like UO, but like a checkerboard map, no 'fluid motion.'
Players do a move about every 3 seconds. Screen was 7 by 7 squares.
Very fun, very intense, and very much a long term mmorpg.
The higher levels and skill levels took much time, years even.
The game could barely get a bug fixed because the 2d code was written over the original code and the original programmers were gone? And no one knew how to program the old language? Depends who you ask.
Could play at AoL for a lot per hour.
Could play LoK and some other games at gamestorm.com for only 14.99/month.
Gamestorm also had Air Warrior II, then III - the prequals to Aces High.
Then, EA Sports bought LoK, and shut it down, never to be forgiven by the players.
I was on the docks with other players when it closed.
"Just say NO!" to EA.
"EA Sports, its in the game"... EA SPORTS WILL CLOSE YOUR GAME!!!
There are runors that the game was remade, in new code, updated with new lands too.
Just rumors though!
If true, it is the winner of any 'time' contest.

I wonder if that's a hint, or an oblique expression of bling.

Warbirds is older and i still play Pong since 1978
-
EVE Online is going strong, released in 2003
-
It all depends how you want to measure it. Falcon 4 was released in 98, still actively played today. Series started in 84.
Rfactor started 13 years ago.
Iracing was 2008 I think, but if you want to compare CK/WB include N2003, GPL and indy 500 it comes back to 89.
The legend of Zelda 86. :old:
-
Let's face it, AH is likely the ultimate survivor as far as MMO's go. It's the oldest game I can think of that is still being not only supported, but actively developed by a non-player entity. and to top it off, it has a stable, if not particularly large, core following that will support it until one of the two dies.
-
I still have a working pong game from the later 70's and a NES 2600 that still works with the controllers and about a half dozen games.
:salute

Starcraft: brood war
-
Grizzy, I said that too earlier in the thread. Based on numbers of players still active, I think SC and SC Brood war, along with possibly Counter Strike are the longest lived online games, both being nearly 15 years old now, and having tens of thousands of players daily. Based on that criteria of numbers being part of how "longest lived" is defined, EVE online is getting up there in terms of a longevity/players ratio.
-
I Believe YSflight, although not near as big or realistic I think started in 1999 or 2000...

Find something good to watch on TV has been a video game thats been around as long as TV.
I have over 600 channels and often find I still cant win at it
