Title: Monocoque or Simi-Monocoque
Post by: earl1937 on July 18, 2013, 02:20:06 PM
:airplane: Most of the aircraft in Aces High were constructed using the "simi-monocoque" design principals but there are some items in Aces High which used "monocoque" designed principals, which are they? What do most of you use everyday in your private life which is "monocoque" constructed?

I don't ride a vespa every day, that would be one and a car would be another.

There aren't actually many pure monocoque designs. As soon as you add additional structure inside the skin it becomes semi-monocoque. Most modern unibody cars are semi-monocoque for example. Of course it's more useful to think of a graduation scale than a simple division.

Arguably the fuselage of our Mosquitos (but not the wings) are the most monocoque aeroplane bits we have. Found a great video the other day with lots of construction footage:

They actually used hand saws to cut the fuselage to fit the wings!   Not bad for some canoe makers.

My second favourite Hermann Goering quote:

"It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. The British, who can afford aluminium better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that? There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops. After the war is over I'm going to buy a British radio set - then at least I'll own something that has always worked".

Boiled eggs?

:airplane: You are close! An egg is a perfect example of a object which is "Monocoque" construction. The only item in Aces High, which is "Monocoque" constructed that we use about every day is a BOMB!

That, clearly, is not true..... And for obvious reasons, person who replied today to a 13 year old post thinking it was today's.

:airplane:What are you refereeing to as not being true? You don't think an egg is an example of something which is Monocoque designed? Don't know anything about a 13 year old thread, only been in this game 3 years.

I cant believe I'm reading this!  Earl is a older fellow, you know old enough to have piloted a B29,so how about giving the guy the benefit of doubt?  I doubt he even noticed that thread was 13 years old and was responding to it because some other player brought back.

Earl enjoys posting question that make people think,I enjoy reading the questions and answers. So if you cant give the man some respect, maybe it's best to not respond!

Seriously JohnnyHeelz.

You mentioned in another post you were kicked off the boards forever after you had 20,000 posts with a different name.  I was not even aware that folks were allowed to just open another account after that.  Please show a little respect.  It will cost you nothing and gain you everything.  Earl is the real deal, he actually flew the aircraft you are playing with.  We have a man in our squad that actually fought in WWII.  It is guys like these that you would do well to take as an example to be a better person.

Sheesh you guys..........   I wasn't getting violent I was simply adding another turn to his "trick question."

The answer to what else.......   EVERYTHING.  It was a trick question regarding the 3d world that is created by planes (a flat plane, not an aircraft) and how that relates to the game.  Think about it that way?

:airplane: I appreciate the comment, but I DID NOT fly in WW2. I flew 29C's from 54 to 57! I have been one of the "lucky" ones, getting the opportunity to fly a lot of different aircraft in my career.
FYI: soloed in PT-26 in 1948, flew, at one time or the other, T-6, T-34, T-28, B-25, B-26C invader, type rated in C-46, C-47, DC-6B. Flew Super H Twin Beech, Grand Commanders, most all the Beechcraft series of twins and finished my career the last 19 years in a Kingaire 200, retiring in 1998. Was full time "Gold Seal" flight instructor for 7 years, specializing in the VA program for vets who wished to obtain their ATP rating, which we used B model Barons and DC-3's. As a flight instructor, sooner or later, you will fly most of the single engine aircraft on the market at that time and most twins. Hope that corrects the record.

  Earl,

Zoney meant that we have a fellow in our squad who was in WW2 not you! Vilkas is the players name and all the guys in JG11 have the utmost respect for him.IMHO that type of respect should be shown to most in this game.

Am I stupid or illiterate or what? On my screen the first post of this thread is dated only two days ago, not 13 years. Although I do remember a thread about monocoques and such from a couple of years ago, but that one was more about how bullets can go through the fuselage without doing more harm than a hole.

And a big  :salute to Vilkas with whom I haven't been having a word for a too long a time.

That is precisely what I mean.  Earl, you are always respectful and kind.  If somebody wants to troll me, meh, not a big deal, but showing disrespect to someone I look up to, not acceptable behavior.

And Vilkas just recently attacked a set of Lancs in a 109K4, shot down all 3 and landed them.  I wish I could convey to all of the players here what an honor, what an absolute treat it is to associate with and be associated with Vilkas.

The Greatest Generation.
