A real weightlifter, the Me 321 Gigant was a huge glider intended for an invasion of England. With up to six engines, it became the Me 323 transport to get soldiers and equipment into battle areas. It had the perfect name: this incredible flying machine was one of the largest World War II aircraft and had astonishing carrying capacity. But it was slow, and easy prey for fighters.
The powered version the Messerschmitt Me 323 was so big it required six engines. As a glider and as an aircraft, the Gigant carried three vehicles or 200 combat troops with equipment. The clamshell nose door and the ability to 'roll-on, roll off' cargoes was a futuristic idea adopted on big transports today.
Size and capacity were not enough. The Me 323 Gigant was very slow and even with gun turrets, almost unable to defend itself. Made of fabric-covered steel tubes, the Gigant was nevertheless immensely strong and Allied fighters sometimes expended their ammunition without downing the lumbering giant. This remarkable aircraft succeeded only in regions where it did not have to face Allied warplanes.

Key to the Gigant's ability was its huge cargo capacity. Its outsize fuselage could hold loads of up to 20 tons.

sounds perfect for the current metagame of the AH LWA
-
Imagine what the allied pilots thought the first time they saw that beast. I wonder if they thought it was smaller and farther away.

Hmmmm...200 troops

Hangar queen after the first week.
Little historical importance. Extremely slow. Troops number would stay at 10 anyway. People take goons when the target area is pretty much wiped out already, and since the C47 is two times faster, why use the 323? There would be no need for the defensive armament. Ju-78 would make a nicer addition since it actually has use in other arenas. But I doubt even the Ju78 will replace the C47 because it's also slower.

WTH is a "Ju-78" ??? :headscratch:

whoops, eat breakfast first before going online. :o Ju-52.
-
yeah but you could take the 323 and load up 3 of ya buddies in GV's and drop them near bases with no GV spawns into them or at the HQ or Strats..... how cool would that be!!!

That would only work with three jeeps :)
-
just give us the C54 skymaster its faster and carries more troops although that is irrelevant I think so make it carry like 4X field sups or something like that :bhead
-1 to ME323 just another big lumbering target

Easy, a Stuka flying backwards :neener:

and Allied fighters sometimes expended their ammunition without downing the lumbering giant.
Given its record when intercepted I am highly skeptical that this is true. To say that it was hacked from the skies by fighters is putting it mildly.
-
it would only be used to resuply strats and that's about it.
semp

Resupplying strats on steroids. But yeah ... no. :)

There was a mission flown by the Germans when they tried to resupply the German army in North Africa. The Luftwaffe flew 27 fully loaded Me 323s escorted by Bf 109s that were bounced by several RAF squadrons. 21 of the 27 Me 323s were lost on that sortie, with only 4 RAF planes lost due to the Bf 109 escorts.

:airplane: Maybe you were thinking of some other aircraft, but the C-54 would only carry about 55 or 60 fully equipped troops, but it was much faster!

I don't believe he's comparing it to the Gigant. :) :salute

That plane is beautiful.

Apparently Bluberry likes big girls :D

It would be a fun target or a fun death star but with our GV spawn system there's little need for vehicle airlifts. It could resupply the crap out of a base though.
-
+1, mainly because it would be a pretty... unique aircraft.
I feel one of the biggest issues with field resupply is that few people take the time. When people see it will take several sorties, many say "f**k it, imma go shoot stuff".
-
Been giving this a little more thought and here's what I come up with.
#1: It would only deployable from key bases like a CV Group (Say the Large Uncapurable Airfileds). It could either be towed by a Tug Aircraft or equipped with the 6× Gnome-Rhône's (950 hp each) and RATO's (which were required for both Powered and Towed takeoffs under full load).
#2: Once landed it would essentially become a mobile Vehicle base.
#3: It would have limited vehicles available. I.E. M8's, M3's, M16's etc etc
#4: It would carry no Vehicle or Airfield Supplies and no Troops. These would have to be flow in via C47 as it is now. Reason being someone could just land this monster on the edge of their damaged field or town and run a M3 out the door and drop field supplies, bail and repeat and have a field/town resupplied in less than 5 minutes. Same thing with troops at enemy Bases or Towns.

Was the Me323 the first cargo airplane with roll on/roll off capability?
-
Actually it wasn't. The CG-4A glider could carry a jeep, or a jeep trailer fully loaded with combat equipment, or a 75 mm howitzer, or a 37 mm anti-tank gun, and specially designed airborne construction equipment including small graders and bulldozers.

The Me 321, the glider predecessor of the Me 323 (which was never towed by the way), was flying and in service before the CG-4a
-
Sure why not.. Can ya imagine the Uber Bomber Gunners in game with all that firepower.. In game it would be more formidable than in real life..
Would make for some Interesting gameplay options.. Tanks brought in by air etc.. I think they could carry up to Pz3 type vehicles..
As a glider, I wonder what it would be like flying in the 3x Me110s Troikaschleppe..
-
I do like the idea of the Me323 being added and able to create a small forward vehicle hangar capable of spawning the halftracks, jeep and M8. Marder I should be added at the same time which would also go on the list. Could the Me323 manage a SdKfz 234 Puma? It looks like it is right on the cargo weight limit and I am not sure about the size.
According to wikipedia the engines were counter rotating as well so, for what its worth, it wouldn't have torque issues.
Overall a very neat plane and very useful if used in places where enemy fighters were not present.
RngFndr,
Panzer III looks like it is about twice the doable weight for the Me323. Still, the Marder I has a useful gun.
-
My memory is tellin me, that I have seen pictures 323 with a Pz3..
But my memory has failed before, and if you have the Stats that show, then :salute

Nah, just the fast and dirty stuff on the internet. Looks like the cargo limit for the Me323 was about 24,000lbs and the Panzer III looks to be over 45,000lbs.

Dude thats an awesome model. Great thread. I didnt know squat about the ME 323.

The Me 321 (glider) had a much higher maximum load of 20,000 kg and could thus (barely) carry an early Panzer III or IV (none of them are in game).
Lighter armored vehicles a Wespe or a Marder I were about the upper limit for the Me 323

Judging by the weight alone, this should have been possible.

i stand corrected Lusche. here's a good article and photos of both.

Ah OK, could'a been the Glider I remember too.. Honestly don't recall the Engines..
Just remember film of the Clam shell doors swinging open, guys hopping out to guide the Bifold ramps down.. Ramps supported by a cable pulley under the cockpit.. Then a Panzer III :huh driving out and down the ramps..
Thinking harder, the film was circa Summer 1940, buildup for operation Sealion period, and it was a Pz3 with a 37mm.. I have seen it multiple times, but haven't found it in my collection.. Damn, I hate that!

A lemon a big one granted.

I say include it if only so we have an A/C that I can see!

I wonder how easy it was to fly.

hi
i like the m323 idea.
give it a chance. My squad will often use it im sure. exspezialy if you are able to carry vehicles and create new spawn points :D. imagine what the evect will be :aok.

This along with the LST's would add a whole new fell to the game

-
LSTs would be sweet, being able to do a proper naval invasion with enormous shore bombardment and the delivery of GVs would be so rad.
-
Me323?
Don't even think about it until we have FW200.
LST's, merchant ships, british LCAs, American troop LCs, German E-Boats, minelayers, minesweepers, bring it on!
