I had a customer, a young man of about 25 years old come in to the motorcycle store. He said his battery was dead on his bike. He wanted to buy a charger, that would fit in the power outlet (the cigarette lighter socket thingy), on his motorcycle to recharge the battery.

you are right, you know we are doomed when motorcycles come with power outlets :furious
-
You should have told him it won't work without the purple power band.
-
So what did you say?

There's a motorcycle with a cigarette lighter on it?

I'll bet he had a college education too.. :rofl

Perhaps he had two motorcycles next to eachothers in the garage...

Lots of solar trickle chargers used to work that way, until manufacturers started disabling the outlets when the car is turned off. I had a cheapo solar panel that connected through the cig lighter in my firebird, and it let me keep using a weak battery for 2 extra winters because I could trickle charge it while at work which kept the weak battery from cold soaking to the point it wouldn't crank. It cranked fine when it was warm, so I didn't want to replace the battery until I had to. Neither of our current 2 cars have active cig lighter outlets when the car is turned off though, so I got rid of the trickle charger. I was considering putting a jumper in the fuze box to power the cig lighter all the time in my G8, but that removes fuze protection so I'd have to hack in another in-line fuze. Instead, if I find myself with a lot of free time I might just directly wire a small solar panel trickle charger to the battery harness and make it a permanent installation. I've seen RVs with that sort of setup and it works fine for the occasional time when an interior light is accidentally left on overnight and the battery needs a little boost before starting the car.

Yep....thing ain't lookin' to good for the future. About two months ago was watching the Leno show. The show sends out someone who asks simple questions that people really should know.
On the Campus of Cal-Berkley two students were asked who the Vice President was....LOL now I grant you who really cares, neither of the students knew the answer.
I guess they get a great 400K$ education at Berkley eh?

It's actually called a "power outlet" normally used to power your radar detector, gps device, cell phone etc.
So what did you say?
I smiled, took a breath and told him that would not work. I did not explain why. We then sold him a small trickle charger and a "pigtail" that is mounted on the battery so you can plug it into an outlet in your garage, connect it to the pigtail and keep your battery fully charged every time you park it. I use one myself and have mine plugged into my garage door outlet which is overhead so I have no wires to trip over. In the Arizona heat batteries are lucky to go 2 years on bikes, with the charger and keeping the battery up every day you can double that battery life.

Very few of them do but a lot of customers ask for them to be installed

I just bought a cigarette lighter charger at a Estate sale for a couple bucks. I have a pair of jumper cables also, but the cigarette lighter charger is small and simple. If it works it works.
-
My previous bike (BMW) had a cig lighter outlet. It was wired direct to the battery with just a fuse in the line. Commonly used to power things like a GPS or heated clothing for winter riding. I used to trickle charge the bike battery all the time through it. Makes things a lot simpler when the battery is buried under the tupperware like on the beemer, or even a wing. That was a neat solution to the charging issue and it worked just fine.
Sometimes folks just don't understand the situation and instead of looking at it for the reality of the situation, just try to ridicule what they don't understand. It ain't a hardware problem, more of a software issue between the ears.

I modify all of my cars power outlet/cigarette lighters to be live at all times.

My Pan European has 2 x 12v power outlets. Is having them fitted somehow against motorcycling? :huh

What part of Arizona are you in? If you're ever down in Phoenix/Tempe, let me know; I'll buy you a beer or a cup of coffee or something.

what is your point? You do understand that Leno's probably search ed for hours in order to find two that did not care enough to know right? Probably freshmen right out of high school? Does knowing who the vp is help you with building a rocket or perform surgery? Are you confusing intelligence with memorizing useless information?
Just curious what is the point you are trying to make

Sheesh Jager. I live in Peoria. The Store is North Valley Honda on Cavecreek Road just south of Greenway. I will buy YOU the beer. I will be riding my bike when I come over to see you so I will be limited to one beer :D

I know the type of charger you mean but possibly you missed the point in this. His battery was dead. He wanted to plug into the power outlet on the bike with the dead battery to recharge the battery on the same bike, not a different bike. You do understand that would not work, correct? I was not critisizing because of his possible lack of education. I think what we forget to teach the young (or the old for that matter), is how to think and that leaves them trying to remember what they were taught to memorize.

Not legally you won't.

True Dat. Risk minimized but not eliminated.

;) The deep breath should clue most people, but judging from the question, I doubt it crossed his mind.
I have a tacoma for work duty, I was amazed when I took the battery in as a core replacement to Costco and they said it was 6yrs old :O Almost unheard of here in Phx. That was less than 2yrs ago and its replacement is starting to fail... :(
I know I got really lucky with the last one, just kinda expected to get 2 summers out of this one, not looking like that will happen.

Well while we are on Motorcycles and stupid subject.
The battery on my bike died, and I didn't at that time have a proper way of charging it. (I was at my house, here's my man card) :uhoh
But I had a solution :aok I stripped the ends off an extra laptop power supply I had lying around and duct-taped the leads to the battery terminal. 18 volts and 3.5 amps of battery charging goodness!
After about half an hour I noticed a rather acrid smell coming from the battery and observed the sides to be slightly bulged out. That seemed about the time to stop charging it and I put it back in the bike and it started right up :D
I'll take my man card back thank you very much. :P

A REAL man kick starts his bike! Batteries? pffft (ok....you DO need a wee bit of voltage for the coil at first)

Had you stated that in the first post it would have been clear however you failed to do so. All you indicated was he wanted a charger to fit into his power point on the bike not that he wanted to loop the charger back into the same bike. See the point there? I agree that trying to loop it back is silly in the extreme.

must be a perception thing...i understood the circumstances in the op. then again, i'm an old guy that understands just how stupid the millenial generation is.

Back on topic about the next generation:
What happens if you try to return a lost phone that you've just found and you text a friend of the owner (found in the contact list)?

Was he blond by any chance? :lol
My sister in law left her phone at the hairdressers. The hairdresser found it but couldn't access it thanks to a screen lock. So as my wife is also a customer she called her to say she had the phone and to let the sister know. Now my wife is blonde and I'm sure you can guess what happened next! :lol Yes she called her sister's phone. How we laughed at the time but she doesn't like to be reminded.
