Ok, so ever since the arena splits, EW, MW and WWI have been ghost towns, which is a shame because it's great having arenas where early machines can be competitive (IE, the F4F-4 is pretty outmatched in LW and to a lesser extent MW, but is quite competitive in EW).
While I don't expect the other arenas to EVER reach the population levels of the LWMA (which I think is less to do with everyone wanting to only fly late-war monsters since there's quite a few popular MW machines than it is a combination of 1) everyone is playing there anyway, and 2) being the closest to the "classic" main arena from before the split) getting a healthy population in those two arenas is going to be good for the game.
The question is, what sort of adjustments can be made to draw players in?
One for certain would be to have new maps with bases closer than 25 miles in EW and MW. The aircraft are slow enough that even at those distances it takes a long time to get into a fight. Closer bases will mean quicker action, making it easier to find a fight.
As for WWI, been a while since I've bothered logging in there, but from my experience its main problem is the plane set. You may as well rename WWI the Dr.I arena, because that's practically ALL you see. Perk the Dr.I and start flesh out the plane set (I mean seriously, why is there no SPAD or Nieuport, or an Albatros or earlier Fokker biplane than the D.VII?). And frankly, WWI would benefit IMMENSELY by having more gameplay options than just furballing. Put up some balloons or Zeppelins to attack and defend.

Few points...
Before there was Eary War/Middle War arena and WWI arena, there was... Combat Theater - not called Axis vs Allies.
I think that the best would be instead of having EWMA, MWMA - is to have CT back. There many players who want to fly interesting planes... That are outclassed at MA. I used to have great time on CT. I think historic plane set with good maps would draw more attention as it was in CT days and it would be much better than EWMA/MWMA because it would be balanced and more planes would be used.
Have you ever seen Val on MA?
I miss CT :pray
Also about WWI
- We need some attack aircraft as well
- We need some way to bring troops: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_truck

CT didn't change. Only the name did, long before EW & MW were created. And EW & MW introduction had about no impact on CT/AvA attendance, numbers had already been quite low there for a long time. So there is nothing anyone can do to give back "your CT", I'm afraid.
Have you ever seen Val on MA?
More than I ever saw in EW (and I was flying quite a lot there back in time). Rare, but still got 62 kills of them in LW so far. :)
-
What initially killed CT was AH2 - all terrains become irrelevant - and it is quite hard to setup historic event on Pizza like arenas.
CT/AvA - just didn't recovered, also EW/MW do not help it.
-
I really don't think EW and MW are taking anything away from AvA considering there's two different play styles. EW and MW are the Main Arena circus, just with more limited plane sets. AvA is for people looking for historical sides and aircraft matchups.

I agree on the first part. On the second: They do not hurt, but also did not hurt it at all. While numbers going down in AvA since AH2 in general, I can see a lot of ups and downs in player numbers & kills (=activity) in the chart, and it'S completely unrelated to the EW & MW.

I go where the most players are. Of course thats basically always LW. I would rather see any resources directed to more overall players. Get 800 - 1000 players on during prime time and you can do arena caps so that we populate the other arenas.

Wrong, that will just make people log if the arena they want to play in is full, or sit in the Arena Selection until it opens up again.

Years ago I played a lot of EW and we had about 30 regulars there and sometimes more. We always had score hunters show up in EW to milk for perk points and score. So we would run missions against these guys hunting cheap perk points and score standings and shoot them down.
That was always fun wrecking the plans of these score hounds. But the HTC changed it so score and standings were restricted to what ever arena you we playing in like EW,MW.LW. This killed the EW area because we no longer had the score hounds coming into the EW arena and soon there were about 3 guys on in there and it is a ghost town.

Its all about horsepower. Less horsepower means less play. I just found that out on my Multi-era tour post.
Nothing can be done.
Probably the best thing to do is just close them an save resources for the late war then add planes like the P63 and F7fF Tigercat.

You're reading what you want into that. The objection has nothing to do with people not wanting EW or MW setups. They want to be able to have the CHOICE of it.

and the vast majority just want the choice of whatever is fastest and has the mostest biggest...the few simmers around here wouldn't shy away from rolling plane sets.

Alas ..... few being the operative word, in this case. :(
Here's where the value of events shine.

When I’m on between 6 and 9pm PST, there’s typically 2-4 players in the EW and 10-20 in the MW. There’s a lot of perk farming going on the EW, not so much in MW. Seems to me these two arenas could be combined into one with a two week RPS. The resources now used to keep both arenas running could be focused on a single arena. The milk runners would lose out but the serious players would benefit. An RPS arena combined with smaller maps better suited to the lower numbers would be a good alternative to what we have now with the EW and MW.

I find it intriguing when people complain of the ENY. I fly 25+ ENY planes, I made sure to learn the higher ENY planes, once I figured out what the ENY did and what caused it. That way ENY doesn't effect me :) .
Which is why ENY should be on ords so we don't have those who outnumber others having hoard missions to steamroll bases and kill all the combat :bhead
But.. that's just me.

First make sure you understand that if the majority wants the late war rides then it only makes since to offer that selection all of the time. I dropped the discussion on the multi-era tours since it had so many critics. I do bow to that and have no argument with the majority.
Keep in mind that the full "Choice" as you noted is dominated by horsepower increases in late war aircraft. Early war and some mid war do have the restrictions of view, I will give your position that.

No matter how many times you repeat a faulty generalization it is always going to be false. You have absolutely no proof that everyone chooses "horsepower" as the determining factor in their choice of planes. Why do you care what another person likes flying or their reason for flying it? Get over it. Just accept that many players have different ideas of what is fun. Let it go.
Why is it so important to you to make people fly in the other arenas? Are you somehow gifted and just "know" that if they are forced to do it they will change their mind and suddenly find they have been "wrong" for so long? If it is because you like flying EW or MW planes and wish to fly only against similar era planes then accept the fact you will have smaller populations to fly against if most people do not share your idea of fun. Focus your message on convincing others to give it a try rather than trying to have HTC mandate they play the way you want the game to be played. In my opinion, forcing people to fly in an arena they do not want to fly in or forcing them to fly planes in some form of a "rolling plane set" will drive more people away rather than attracting more people to it. :salute
-
you might want to look around the retardnet a little Halo...some form of rolling plane sets is working elsewhere with a much bigger player base. if players here were forced to make choices and work their way up, fewer would be inclined to shy away from such an idea.
-
Once again, Randy, you were advocating a Rolling Plane Set to force players to fly a particular environment.
That's NOTHING to do with what I'm suggesting. What I'm suggesting is finding what tweaks can be made to the other three arenas to draw people to them.
For example, almost from its inception the same main complaints about the WWI arenas have been made:
1) The Dr.I needs to be perked. BADLY. As I said in the OP, WWI may as well be the Dr.I arena.
2) The plane set in general. We have two British and two German aircraft. Where's the Nieuport and SPAD, both of which were significant aircraft, the latter of which in particular would be a WHOLLY different type of machine in this arena, being a true E-fighter/BnZer.
3) There's really nothing to do in it. People can talk all they want about just wanting to furball, but if that's the case, why don't we see 300+ people in Furball Lake in the Dueling Arena, rather than 300+ in LWMA? That strikes me as confirmation that people are wanting furballs that are DRIVEN by something, which the base capture mechanics provide.
Fix those three issues. Perk the Dr.I; add a German machine or two like one of the earlier Fokker biplanes and an Albatros along with one of the SPADs and Nieuports and maybe an Allied perk machine like the Snipe; add some sort of mechanic to generate fights (balloon busting, some sort of land grab mechanic, strategic targets and bombers, whatever) and you'll almost certainly see more players in WWI.
If fights take too long to get to in EW because of the lower aircraft speeds, allow smaller maps with closer bases. If airfield captures are troublesome because of the size of the towns, come up with a new mechanic (IE maproom right on the airfield itself rather than having to blow up the town).
This isn't about "making" anyone do something they don't want. It's about finding the right sort of cookie to encourage them to give it a try.

I understand what you "trying" to do, I just don't see anything short or making them a "free" arena to drag anyone in any of the other arenas.
WWII flight sim is a small group as it is. Even now its impossible to keep the LW arena over 300 players all 24 hours a day. If there were another 1000 players logging in then yes I could see the other arenas start to see some action, but with the numbers we have now I just see it.
-
Wrong, that will just make people log if the arena they want to play in is full, or sit in the Arena Selection until it opens up again.
I'm not going to sit there and watch a screen telling me when I could log into the LW. I'd go into any other arena instead, I speak for myself, but I'm not logging because LW is (would be) full.
Also, when we get 600 in there and this starts happening then we should worry about it.
-
Once again, Randy, you were advocating a Rolling Plane Set to force players to fly a particular environment.
No, I am not. I agree with you. Rolling plane sets is a bad idea based on every ones replies.
Lets let the OP have his thread back.

Maybe arena caps are wrong (I think there is/was a technical issue that required them) but my point about 800-1000 players is not wrong. If we want usage in all arenas we need people. Taking 60 players from LW to fly in the cool new MW arena is robbing Peter to pay Paul. Double the subscriber revenue and suddenly spending $ on WWI or other enhancments is an easier decision. Spending it to shuffle 300 players around probably won't get much traction.
Everyone has their own take on whats fun, mine is (was) Titanic Tuesday. Give me full arena and I'll fly whatever plane set is turned on. Split the 120 players that are on at 10pm up so theres only 30 in 4 arenas and that is what makes me log.

No there wasn't a technical issue. HTC posted once that each arena could handle 1000 players with no problem. The issue was a social one were having too many players in an arena it was easy for players to feel left out. There was also a lot of comments on how over crowding also had turn the arena into a sewer for social interaction.

Flown in there much lately? Didn't think so or you'd know the players enjoy starting with the early war rides and working their way through the plane set to the late war aircraft.
Merging the EW and MW into one arena with a different angle than the LW main (like an RPS) is viable alternative to running two stand alone arenas with a combined head count of around 16 players during US primetime.

So what your saying is that even tho people over there have earned the uber rides they are still flying the lesser res because its more fun? I don't think so, they are only using them to GET the better rides.
I don't see why people keep trying to combine or change the other arenas. The arenas are not a burden to HTC and can support hundreds of player in each with put breaking a sweat. Changing them isn't going to bring more people into them only MORE people are going to bring on more people. At this time there just isn't enough people playing to fill all the arenas enough to make it fun.
-

And it seems that if people can't get into LW to fly their preferred high-performance ride, they would rather just log off instead of go to another arena. How many whines were there when they had two LW arenas with caps, and players couldn't get into "teh popularz" arena...and sat at the login screen and spammed the "join" button hoping a spot would open in that arena, when they could have gone into the other LW arena or MW and had some fun flying?
I think having more people in the game will only make LW more populated. I myself like the EW/MW planes and prefer flying them. I have thousands of perk points, but prefer to fly non-perked planes. In "that other game", I can use tier 6 planes, but prefer to fly a tier 2 plane. I guess I'm just weird.
-

This is actually an intriguing thought. Would a free EW arena draw more paying customers who wanted more, or would it draw fewer paying customers because people were satisfied with free?

This might be a good idea. It will definitely give people a much better example of what online play is like than the old free 8-player did.
I think you'll get a combination of players: Some try it, love it, and want to move on to being able to participate in Events or to have access to the LW rides and will open payed subscriptions, while others will be content to continue playing in the free arena. But remember, you already have that mix with F2P business models, as well. And seeing players in the arena will draw more players to it. And speaking from experience with other MMO games, no matter what the player preferences or mechanics, it's ultimately seeing other people online that gets you to log on yourself.
Here's a hypothetical expansion on the idea:
First, have an option for a Free to Play account, no CC# required to register.
Training Arena - Available to all players, both paid subscription and Free to Play.
Early War Main Arena - Available to all players, both paid subscription and Free to Play.
Mid War Main Arena - Available to paid subscriptions. Free to Play players can "purchase" access for X number of perks, earned as normal via the EWMA.
All Other Content - Available to paid subscriptions.
Free to Play players in the Early War and Mid War arenas would otherwise receive the full content available to those arenas. All the skins, perk planes operate as normal, achievements, score, etc.
-
I like saxman's idea of free to play ew, but without the ability to earn perks or use earned perks in mw. Folks may just go to ew to harvest perks from newbs. Others may cancel subs and just play ew and mw.

Keep the "Perks are used in the arena in which you earn them" to prevent perk farming. However some EW craft need to be perked in that arena (IIRC, the Hurricane IIC was perked in EW, and wasn't the Lancaster as well?) so you still need to be able to earn them within the arena. And like I said, set it up so that F2P players can spend perks to access MW (some suitably high number, whether it's 5000 altogether or whatever). But they need to earn "Midwar Perks" to access the perks in that arena.

You realize the F4U-1A was the main variant in use in 1944, right? At least a couple squadrons were still operating them into '45.
-
Just how many of you actually fly in EW or MW? :huh :headscratch:
95% of my "game time" is spent in MW. I like it, get to fly with a great bunch of people, a decent selection of planes/gv's.
Why is everyone that DOESN"T fly MW want to change it? Go to your LW and have fun the way you want to, but leave us alone. :furious
I suspect the EW group feels the same way.
-
Perrine,
The F4U-1A arrived in 1943 so should be in both Mid AND Late War according to your setup. Likewise the F6F-3 was deployed alongside F6F-5s through the end of the war. You also have the F4F removed from the time period in which it actually saw the most combat! Coral Sea, Midway and Guadalcanal were all 1942, and the F4F-4 was still a front-line fighter well into 1943, particularly until the F6F arrived in September due to the Corsair's teething problems on Carrier operations. Even then, the F4F still saw combat into 1944 in the form of the FM-1 (an F4F-4 built by General Motors that reverted to a 4-gun armament) until it was replaced by the FM-2. So the F4F-4 would legitimately appear in all three arenas (I noticed you don't have bombers listed, but the SBD would be the same: A prewar aircraft that continued to see front-line combat through the end of the war with the Marine Corps, and wasn't fully replaced by Navy squadrons until after Phillippine Sea in late-1944).
TBH, I would NOT remove EW/MW aircraft from later periods, precisely because many earlier aircraft remained in combat to some capacity well after being replaced as front-line machines.
Jimmy,
You mean all six or seven of you? ;)

I would give the new players the perks, let them build up and use them as they please, even with a 2 week subscription account you can keep or use your perks. How is this going to hurt anyone for starters? A newbie isn't going to build hundreds of perks in the EW arena over night, I find it easier in the Late war arena vs the early war.

You seem to miss the point, EW and MW are dead like the WW1 arena. Its only midnight and there are only 10 people in MW arena, earlier I went in there and there were 3 afk. The idea is try to help populate the game, including EW and MW arenas.
Imagine if we can add 50 people to that list? even 25.

let's say you get 50 or 100 players at any time to play in the ew and mw for free. how many paying customers do you think will switch to ew to play for free? I would. instead of attracting paying customers we would lose some.
sometimes I am wondering why you guys dont open your own marketing consulting business as you seem to know how to run a company.

Well if you consider it the way it is now, we have nobody in EW, MW, or WW1 arena. Instead of opening EW Arena for free, why not the training arena then? Do you have a better suggestion to what might bring new customers?

Thank you Lusche. :aok

I like saxman's idea of free to play ew, but without the ability to earn perks or use earned perks in mw. Folks may just go to ew to harvest perks from newbs. Others may cancel subs and just play ew and mw.

TBH, I would NOT remove EW/MW aircraft from later periods, precisely because many earlier aircraft remained in combat to some capacity well after being replaced as front-line machines.
How's this? I'll create lists of planes that were withdrawn/exhausted from service
For example... i'm sure (in my head) that spit1's and I-16 were withdrawn in mid war and in-game spit 5, 109F's (replaced by 109G's) and ju 87's (replaced by 190F's) in late war.

What possible difference would it make if early-war planes were left in the late war arena? I see no reason for anyone to spend any time trying to come up with a reason to remove any planes.

Exactly. Why do you want to take anything away from what many find enjoyable? Do you really think you can force them into the early war arena's by doing this. Furthermore why do you find it neccessary that these arena's be populated? If you want to fly in them then go and do that. Invite your friends to do so also. Populate them by making them popular.

Imagine if we can add 50 people to that list? even 25.
Your not in there at the right time, most evenings we have around 15 to 30. Of course when a LW squad wants to show how "awesome" they are we may jump up to 40 or 60, it all depends. Also LW numbers drop off at midnight as well.
All that is still beside the point, you don't fly there, don't worry about it. I fly there and I like. :devil
