Hello Fellow gamers,
I am returning to aerial combat MMOGs for the first time in 9 years. I left IEN's Warbirds in 2004 due to the constant bickering and poor customer service. Over there my handle was, and still is, Banshee. Upon enrolling in AH I tried to get it here but sadly it was taken. So I racked my brain to come up with a handle that a "johnny come lately" like me could get. I am a huge fan of Soviet Cold War era jets and being primary a bomber guy (I stink at furballing) I thought it would be appropriate to use a NATO identifier. I also wanted to use a Soviet bomber that was sleek n sexy, fast but not well known outside of the Cold War aviation enthusiasts.
So I selected the Tupolev Tu-22 "Blinder" and I was pleased, but not surprised, to find the name available. So here I am. :salute
(http://skymaster.fr.free.fr/avionsbom/urss/blinder/blinder.jpg)
I also enjoy flying Virtavia's Tu-22 in FSX and VATSIM. Though if you try to go supersonic over the CONUS the ATC's yell at you!
So what is the history behind your handle?

Nathaniel was my name in Ultima Online Beta and Final in 1997/98. It's from my GG grandfather who fought in the Civil War, Nathaniel Sanderson. In UO I ran with the guild "The Regulators" and had epic battles against guilds such as The Mercs, Pluggers, Obsidian Order, and more.
BEAT DOWN POSSE formed in late 98 to dominate the classic jet pack first person shooter TRIBES. Shorted to NathBDP. BDP later went on to compete in Rainbow 6 and Rogue Spear on the "mplayer" gaming client/community which was later bought by Gamespy. Ahh the good old days. Started flying Aces High in late 99, flew with The Knights Who Say Ni! with DMF/Honch and later joined BKs when some of those guys left for Everquest or whatever other mmorpg there was.
The name NathBDP will always be synonymous with a wanton disregard for authority and willingness to sacrifice everything for honor in battle.

I started flight sims in Air Warrior on AOL. I had always used "Maddog" as my name in any game that asked for a "name. When I join AW there was already a Maddog, and as you could only use 8 letters MaddogJoe was out of the question I choose MDJOE. Soon after starting AW I joined the 444th Air Mafia, whos motto was "There is only one way out of the mob, in a pine box". When AW was killed by EA :furious We came to Aces High were there already was a Maddog again, so I stuck with MDJOE.
After leading the squad for a few years I got to the point that even after stepping down I felt I was expected to be a team player, and lead the squad. I found it to restrictive and wanted to step away and fly rogue for a bit, but there was that motto :noid
And so I became the Fugitive :D
I'm still a mobster and always will be.
-
When I joined Warbirds the handle I wanted was already claimed. I was studying ancient Egyptian history at the time and took this name from the Karnak temple complex. The Egyptian connection is why I put the eye of Horus on my BB avatar.
-
Mine is well, not very interesting I'm afraid.
Reaper, well, that's obvious.... as a new subscriber and not even a green n00b yet I picked a name I thought would be synonymous with killing..... how original! :lol
90 has always been my number on my racecars, going back to time trials with the Corvette, and later SCCA and NASA with the Acura then the Honda.
If the BBS let you change your handle, I'd have changed both not long after starting to something with some historical significance. But I didn't like the idea of one name here, a different name in-game.
-
Back in Air Warrior, pick a short name. Stuck with it.
-
With a 90+MPH Fastball, a circle-changeup is simply the finest pitch in baseball.
Its deceptive, moves extremely well, and makes hitters look foolish whilst flailing at it. Seemed appropriate since I am not deceptive, don't fly extremely well and have never made a con look foolish.

When my husband played Air Warrior, his handle was Zebedee, named after a character in a popular TV series, The Magic Roundabout (http://magicroundabout.com/). Zebedee was a Jack-in-a-box character that would announce "Time for Bed" at the end of each episode, and my husband chose that name partly because he 'kept bouncing back' to AW (played on dial-up so was expensive, with high phone bills!) and also after the way he would bounce down the runway when landing his favourite plane, the P38.
I would often watch him playing - though in the early days I was more concerned about the phone bills! In later years, after AW went to Gamestorm and with the pressure of high phone bills eliminated, I began to take more interest especially when he told me he thought he was going to be invited into a squad one night. I had no idea of the depth of the game until then, and watched as he went online and met up with Spiff in Cz HQ. After a few flights, the invitation was made and he became a member of the Krait Squadron, and I was fascinated by the whole event!
I wanted to be part of this new world, but didn't think I would be able to fly so for a while I just watched. Then it was suggested I might like to play even if it was just driving vehicles and maybe gunning bombers and I finally decided to give it a go. When it came to choosing a handle, I wanted something to associate me with my husband, so decided to go for another character from The Magic Roundabout. There were only two female characters and, not wanting to be called after a cow (Ermintrude) I chose Florence. This was shortened to Flos (Floss was taken and I didn't want Flo, though I was often called that by people who used the Short IDs) for the CPID which could be no more than 5 letters.
Since moving to Aces High I extended Flos to Flossy and have been Flossy for the last 13/14 years (in other games as well as this one!). :old:

When I joined AW on AOL in '96 I tried all the birds of prey names, Falcon, Eagle, Hawk, etc. but they were all taken. I settled on Crash since that was the most common outcome of most of my sorties. Not long after signing up I joined the Red Barons squadron and everyone's name had to start with ^ so, to fit the five character limit I changed my handle to ^Crsh.
About two weeks after joining the squad the CO left turning the squad over to me. We grew to about 60 members but I never eliminated the ^ requirement. As AW transitioned to AWII then AW3 and changed ownership our numbers declined until, when I moved here as EA pulled the plug on AW, I moved alone.
When I got here I decided that going back to Crash wasn't a great idea as that name had been taken in AW during the time I was ^Crsh so I decided I'd try the bird of prey thing again. Guessing the most obvious choices would be taken I thought, well... I'm bald and I fancy myself a bird of prey so how about BaldEagle which I shortened to BaldEagl to fit the eight character restriction and low and behold it was available and that's who I've been ever since.
These days I'm less a bird of prey than a preyed on bird so a change might be in order.

Banshee!! Glad you found your way here man, welcome to the game, hope ya love it as much as I.
I played as Zoney here for over 3 years then decided to Join JG11 and make a commitment to Luftwaffe only aircraft. I wanted it to be a strong commitment so I decided to change my handle and now Fly proudly with JG11 as "Hartmann", the worlds leading fighter ace with 352 kills. When I looked to see if the name was taken I was amazed that it was not so I grabbed it.
JG11 does not recruit. We do accept new members on a trial basis and after a bit you can decide if it is the right squad for you and we can decide if you are the right pilot for us. Squadron CO is "Stampf". I always like playing with you in Warbirds and respected your gameplay or I would not even mention to you anything about JG11. You must make a commitment to Luftwaffe aircraft exclusively. Like in Warbirds there is a fantastic historical scenario operation every Friday called "FSO", Friday Squad Operations. It is even better here then there and JG11 is a very strong participant in that endeavor.
FYI, if you remember me from WarBirds let me assure you I have completely changed in how I treat my fellow players.
Again, really glad you found your way here Banshee, now know as "Blinder" :salute

A lot of people think I took my handle for Shifty Powers of Band of Brothers fame. I couldn't imagine using a handle for a game in reference to somebody like Mr Powers. I have too much respect for him. Actually I use Shifty because it was the callsign of an A-10 pilot I was dedicated crew chief for while serving in the 333rd FS at Davis Monthan AFB during the late 80s and early 90s. The callsign also became the name for our A-10 ser number 770284.
Back in the good ole days when they were still green. :D

:airplane: Welcome to the game sir! :salute Kinda silly what I decided on for a game name, happened to see a Early Times ad in a mag I was looking at as I was trying to decide, then decided my old high school basketball number might be in good taste. The 19 in my forum name was my high school football number, so ET37 or Earl1937 will get my attention.

Aces High is the first game I have ever played on-line, I was astonished how inferior my play was to everyone else's. Addicted to competition, such as I am, I was hooked line and sinker. Now how do I leach the hard earned knowledge that the uber cool guys have and I don't without pissing them off by looking like a freeloading tag along. I thought maybe if they see me as someone they can use as bait to get kills with they might put up with me longer. Ok Ill go by the call sign "killb8". Then Ill change it to something cool once I've learned all they have to teach. That was 5 years ago :cry

Name them your Fighter Pilot Heros, admire them, honour then, respect them, and be thankful for every encounter with them. If not for my FPHs, I would not be as good as I am today after now two, almost three, years to where I can now pwn 95% or so of pilots at will (not to sound braggy). :)
Truth is find the best, learn from them, and one day, with some luck, you'll be among the best too. :aok

Everyone asks where "Gorf" came from so here it is....years ago ('06 I think) during my 2 week, I just put down the first thing that came to mind, I later realized "Gorf" was the name of an Arcade game I used to play in the early 80's...My online name for every other online game i've ever played since the 90's was "Conlan" or "ConlanAbu"

"Handle" is CB radio talk, in aviation it's a "call sign." Personal C/S's many times relate to some less than stellar part of your history like a friend of mine who's C/S was Pig. That came up from his less than high standards when it came to picking up girls in bars. Boom got his C/S from a blown tire on takeoff. It became Boom Boom after he blew a second tire. Fridge got his by drilling a hole through a wall and right into the cooling coils of our ready room refrigerator. My C/S has been Mace since 1980 so it was an easy enough answer when I started in AH. Unlike many of the other C/S's the origin of mine is simple enough, it's just a contraction of my last name but it's always stuck with me.

Handle ... call sign .... same difference. :D

Mine is kind of simple i thought the callsign Tracerfire would be cool to have but the 8 character limit shot that idea down and because i was very tired i just took out the "re" and called it a day

Yes I think I remember you from WB. if I remember correctly, you were pretty deadly with a 190. I think it was you one time we came at each other HO and I put a well placed 37mm from my P-39 right through your big BMW radial. You cursed at me the whole way down. ;)

when I used to play in air warrior, I was one of the best gunners in b17's around. but I would crash a lot of my planes either taking off or landing. so here in aces high I came up with the guncrasher id when the "semp" id was already taken when I joined.
my brother first used semp(er fi), as he was a marine just like my father, in AW when he retired I took over and have kept it since then, after a couple of years of flying as guncrash, "semp" became available and I took it and have kept it since then.

When I joined I figured I would suck alot, and that's why I called myself 'Lusche'. After about 2 years I didn't suck that much anymore, but more importantly I was tired by all the "how do you pronounce it?" questions.
So I changed the ID to 'Snailman' which has no particular history to it. It was funny, easy to pronounce for you US guys and somewhat original. ;)

Hajo = nickname for Hans Joachim. Had this nick way back in AW.
BTW Hans Joachim Hermann was the leader of JG300 Wilde Sau (Wild Boar) I flew the A8 in AW so used the nickname.
-
Believe it or not, "Loki" is an old family nickname bestowed on me by my older brother. I try to live up to it in the game being as sneaky, devious, and clever as possible. In Norse mythology Loki was a trickster and constant troublemaker, but he also frequently got the more straightforward (and dumb) Aesir, especially Thor, out of jams they'd gotten themselves into.

When I signed up I wanted the name Tennessee. It was taken, so I went with JC my initials.
I eventually saw the guy in the DA who had the Tennessee callsign.
"Hey what part of TN you in?"
"I live in California "
"Are ya from TN?"
"Nope never even lived there"
:bhead

Started out late 1996 in Warbirds as kaka ( Swedish for cookie)
I had a habit of hanging over own airfield at altitude and killing enemies trying for own guys running home, "thanks for the Save" was often the comment.
When my credit card expired I changed my name to save , later -save- and year 2000 finally =save=
I just took the name over here, when I migrated here.
-
When I started playing I didn't want a "cool name" that meant Ace or Killer. You hear "Maverick" and think skilled pilot, or "DeadEye" and you think of a crack shot. I wanted to take a name that had absolutely no meaning at all and create a meaning for it by fighting everyone and getting good at dogfighting. Just like we all know the names of great Aces from WW2 I wanted to create a name that would (eventually :D) be a name that people would remember as a great pilot in AH2. As I pondered what name I should take (I was never good at making up names) I noticed my dads beer on the table. He drank Rolling Rock at the time and I saw the word "Latrobe" on it. I figured that was good enough and took it. I have never once thought of changing it. :D
Since no one knows who they're fighting in this game until one of you is dead, recently I've taken to putting a bright yellow nosed skin on every single one of my aircrafts. Hopefully this way everyone knows exactly who that 109F4 is without even fighting it. :devil
-
In my 2week trial I think I got shot up and went "dead stick" every time I managed too get a plane off the ground... Seemed fitting for me. I did not give thought to the pp jokes that would follow :old:
-
Some might think my name is Whiskey because of me and my families involvement in the liquor business for more than 20 years, but I actually got the title " Mr Whiskey " while in Germany in the eighties with the Army,,, I had lots of German freinds in Ingleheim and the surrounding little towns, I gave out Jack Daniels for Christmas presents to all my German freinds ,, and just before Christmas of the next year, I'd hear hey Mr Whiskey, from people who hoped to get on my Christmas list!
The handle kind of stuck!

I started out in the AW as MajPayne due to the questions I alwayw asked. When I came to AH I picked fyrfitr and joined the 68firftr and after a brief stint with them I decided I didnt fit there. Now as a rule I had to get rid of the 68 and fly without it. A lot of peopme told me I had the flying ability of a LawnDart so I changed it to that. I have been flying with that handle ever since...
Excluding a 30 day stint as creampuf due to losing a duel ... a littl advice.. don't dri nk tequila tuan challenge someone to a name change duel. It is not worth it.
LawnDart
-
In air attack I picked the name gunfighter and switched to GunFTR here in AH. I love gunfights from the Stephen Hunter books and Clint Eastwood movies. I also really like the gunfighter p-51 mustang. I'll never run. I will always turn and gunfight you. :joystick: peace.

INK is easy....tatting for 25 years :aok
JETSOM my ingame nick now...when my brother starting flying we took the names FLOTSOM and JETSOM from the thrash metal band........ Flotsam and Jetsam :D
my very first name I chose back in tour 52 was "USURPER" fitting being a egotistical stunninghunk that I am, I take over everything and put those below me in fear.
the next name I took was MORTIS because I brought death to everyone.... and from a great book "on a pale horse"
I chose the name 1BADSHOT for a shade because I am the worst shot ingame :rofl :rofl :rofl
another nick I took for a shade was BUDO by this time I was flying smarter.....still very aggressive....it means the "Martial Arts way"
-
"Fulcrum" because I like to fly the MIG-29 in this other combat flight sim that shall remain nameless.
I started as "Hoplite" and flew that for many years. I've been an ancient military history buff since the 8th Grade.
I've also flown as "AKFulcrm" and "AKBandit" when I was with the Arabian Knights...the later was a inside squad joke as my squad forum avatar was a picture of Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit :D
Have I shaded...yep. I always do so as "Gladius", again due to my interest in history. I'm not really giving anything away here as I pretty much tell anyone who I am if they ask.

i dont know why im named twinboom my memory escapes me

Well, upon entering the game, I tried to think of a creative name so I came up with "ghost51." "Ghost" because, well, ya know, I figured I'd kill the enemy so fast without them seeing me, and "51" came from the P-51 being my favorite plane at the time. I joined a squad on my first day online and changed to Ghost208.
After I left the 208th, I start running with what was known as a "rough crowd" in AH, and with a 15 year old mind, I tried to fit in and found myself facing several mutes, chat suspensions, and was generally disliked by most of the player base. So, looking for a fresh start, I changed my name to Banshee7 (this all occurring within the first few months of joining AH). "Banshee" comes from several different places: 1) I wanted to stick with the ghost-like theme; 2) I always wanted a Yamaha Banshee growing up, but I never got one; 3) While doing some research on the P-51, I found a B model in a painting named the "Beantown Banshee." The number 7 was kind of thrown in there for luck, and my CO at the time was Swoop777. So, that's how Banshee7 came about.
In my most recent incarnation a year ago, I came back as "Twang." And, if you've ever heard me on Vox, it's pretty easy how I came up with that. But, two weeks ago I finally changed my name back to Banshee7.

I switch names every few years, not to hide but I simply get bored with the name. Its funny as my name generally regards me as a "Butcher bird pilot" in fact the 190 series is one of the least flown aircraft that I fly. I do regard it as one of the top best 3 aircraft during ww2, but I simply don't find it interesting.
Anyhow back to the name - one night out at the local bar I run into someone from high school I haven't spoken to in years, he asked something along the line of "wern't you the guy whose nickname is butcher or something?".... long story short I worked as a butcher in high school to make some extra cash for the weekends, however I had a customer irritate me to no end one day and I took out a hog and sliced and diced it in front of her. I ended up fired, but the name has been stuck with me ever since.

Picked my handle back in '97 when I tried AW online for the first time. IIRC it was "asw15b" at first - my then favorite sailplane to fly (been a glider-guider for years). Shortened it to asw and kept that handle ever since. Even though I was in the RCN and my job was anti-submarine warfare that isn't why I chose the handle.
Cheers,
asw

First squad was Ghost, my initials are CDB.
Ratio is my username I use for console system because my Ratio of Kills to Death are usually high. Specially in FPS.

When I got tired of being a chef for 12 years , I became involved in Shipping and receiving. My last job before the Govt. brought me down and disabled me . Hence the name shipper!

When I started online flight simming with Air Warrior (on the Genie server at $6/hour) my handle was 3933.
At the same time I have found a Mac group on Compuserve that was loosely organized as a naval attack squadron, VFA-13 Shadow Riders, flying F-18 Hornet. As a Shadow Rider member you didn't pick your callsign, it was assigned to you. I was a police officer at that time, my last name is Falk....no doubt I would end up Columbo. My wifes callsign ended up being Pebbles (something about a skydive demo, less than perfect landing and gravel in the crack of her butt). :devil
-
Mine is probably self explanatory. Other name is nylnriot (nylon riot)... which is what happened in 1945/1946 when stores got in 10,000 pair of nylons & 30,000+ women showed up.

1ijac (one-eye-jack ) Not lil jac, lilac, etc... lol
Many call me one-eye for short. 1ijac has been my handle since Air Warrior when I began flying over 20 years ago. As a moderator in Air Warrior, my handle was Jenny until EA bought Kesmai. I was EAGuruJac after EA bought AW when moderating. I flew an FW190-A8 almost all the time. I was a member of the Pigstompers for most of the 20 years and flew a lot in the Korea arena in a Mig also. After AW closure, I came to AH as 1ijac. The name was chosen not as in playing cards, but as a pirate. A relative flew a corsair in the Pacific theater during WWII and their squad patch was a eye-patched pirate with a knife in his teeth (1ijac).

I'd say Drediocks history but this is a family friendly forum.
Before this I was known as /IT\ in Airwarrior
Before that I was known as PORNO. But some folks over there didnt like that name for some reason and made me change it.
Before that I was known as qg123. which was the default handle Airwarrior gave me. I just never bothered changing it
-
My name has always been my last name. perdue7, perdue2, perdue3 chronologically. While flying La-7's and 262's with MiamiAce for years, people called us La dweebs and jet dweebs. Well, my account didnt get paid for and I was too novice to know that you could just call HTC and reactivate. So I had to come up with something original. I figured I would combine "perdue" and "dweeb" to make it easier on people. They no longer have to call me a dweeb for I am calling myself a dweeb by naming myself perdweeb.

<----St. Andrews on the Swilcan Bridge.
I wasn't even a teenager when I signed up for Air Warrior on AOL. Started as Gol-4 (Gol-four. Golfer) and I haven't seen a need to change it. At the time I played a lot of golf, growing up I played a lot of golf and now that I'm supposedly a grown up I still occasionally play golf so it's still pertinent I suppose.

I started my Army career out in the 82nd Airborne Division. When you jump what they call large package jumps, lets just say anything can happen. There was also a very high drug use at the time among the parachute riggers. So, needless to say there was some serious fatalistic humor among the jumpers. My favorite after jumpmaster school was "dude.... I would not jump this rig, your going to end up as a Dirtdart".

My jumping days are over, I am nearly an inch shorter (broken back) thanks to a little miscalculation in the winds (thanks Air Force) while jumping with the USAF Pararescue school. So, to say the least, it was an ironic moment in life.

Started as jdB24 in my first (and still first) online gaming experience. Flew bombers and not very well. The prototype target drone.
A friend of mine always had to put some stupid name down, when setting video game records - like BLZ, HOR, etc. DIK inspired me to use it in AH. I was told on a few occasions that there were heated discussions on 200 channel about the name, but I was oblivious to it. Some people didn't want to speak my name on range, for fear of getting muted. :lol
Got bored with that name when I started to kinda-sorta figure out how to fly a fighter (and still don't quite have it :headscratch:), so I went through the dictionary to find a cool word for my new lower-profile persona. And so caldera was born.
Had to take a break from the game, due to financial reasons but came back incognito for a few weeks as bait to troll my squaddies. I was taunting and insulting them using ghetto-speak and at least one of them was getting mad. The CO knew the whole time of course, and we had some big laughs over it.
Eventually got tired of people mispronouncing caldera or calling me "cald", so I picked something easy to pronounce, stupid and also sure to piss people off when "Snuggie shot you down" shows up in the text bar. I think it works. :D

You asked for it :neener:
Jasper Newton Daniel was born on a Moore County farm in September 1850 to Calaway and Lucinda (Cook) Daniel. He was one of 12 children fathered by Calaway. There were many hardships endured by the family, including the loss of Jasper’s mother when he was seven years old. When the young man was around the age of 10, his father decided it was time for his son to learn a trade.
With only a scant, but well-grounded basic education, Jasper was hired out to the local Lutheran Minister, who also ran a dry goods store in Lynchburg, TN. In those days, the local store was more than a market. It provided families with everything they needed to run a farm, a business, or a home.
The store keeper had to often be an individual of many talents and skills – a person who had to know how to make many things wanted by his clientele. Like blacksmithing or any other trade, it had to be taught and learned through the age old apprenticeship methods. The young man received a sound education in the store keeper’s trade from Rev. Dan Call and soon proved himself to be a quick learner with a shrewd head for business. One of Rev. Call’s best known products, however, stemmed from a whiskey still he operated on the Louse River near his store.
Like most Tennesseans of his day, he employed the ancient Scots-Irish traditions of whiskey-making, but Call had been developing a system of distillation that was unique to his own brand.
In those days, most whiskey that was made and sold was clear in color or flavored with caramel, which gave it the amber look most associated with the drink. It was only aged a few days at most before being sold, which made most whiskeys taste the same.
Reverend Call used the traditional "sour mash" method of leaving a little of the mash from earlier brews in the storage vat to speed up the fermentation of subsequent mixes. In addition, he used a troublesome filtering system called the "Lincoln County process" to age his whiskey. Rev. Dan Call took hard sugar maple and burned it to charcoal, which the whiskey was then filtered through into barrels. While most distilleries in Tennessee used the process at the time, it cost them both time and money and led to many eventually abandoning the practice for quicker profits. Call, however, was a true believer in the "Lincoln County Process" and it was most notable to his customers, who preferred the Minister’s whiskey to the others available in the region.
He taught Jasper the system along with his other working theories gained by experimenting and years of experience. Jasper, who was becoming known by his nickname "Jack", soon proved he was an able brewmaster and capable of rivaling his teacher.
When war became imminent in the state in 1861, the Minister and his young associate kept the business going as best they could. Jack’s youth kept him out of service, his family was like most Tennesseans of the time and involved in the conflict. One of his relatives served with Confederate General N.B. Forrest and rode with him throughout the war. Jack Daniel and Rev. Call managed to scratch out a living from the store and Jack would often transport whiskey as far south as Huntsville, Al. In 1863 during a "Camp Meeting", a lady evangelist delivered a fiery sermon that inspired Call’s wife and congregation to demand the minister make some hard choices. They told him to get rid of his distillery operation or to resign his ministry. Rev. Call decided to sell the business to his young associate.
Jack, who was 13 at the time and mourning the recent death of his father, began to concentrate his time on the business and was a one-man show for a while. He eventually was able to hire a couple of people to help him and, eventually went looking for a better place to locate his business.
Jack Daniel found a tract of land in Lynchburg that included a limestone cave and spring. The pure spring water from the cave became the most important business tool Daniel ever purchased. With the War Between the States over in Tennessee and it starting to come to a close elsewhere, Jack Daniel rightly anticipated the Federal government would levy a tax on distillery operations and, at the age of 16, became the first to register his operation with the United States government. The taxes levied on his company’s product were something he always despised, but because of his quick business move and the growing popularity of a unique whiskey that produced much needed revenue for the government, Jack Daniel avoided the Reconstruction politics that claimed many businesses in Tennessee.
In spite of it all, the young man began to prosper quickly as a distiller and was able to increase his production as well as his profits. He was a consummate promoter of his brew and stayed on top of the industry and informed of the latest developments in the art of making whiskey, including an aging process that benefited the taste and character of the whiskey. When he finally turned 21, Jack Daniel decided to go to the city on a shopping spree. When he returned, the 5’2" distiller was sporting a formal knee length black frock coat and a broad-brimmed planter’s hat that would eventually become his trademark daily uniform. Jack Daniel was always described as a colorful character who gave the small town of Lynchburg a sense of spirit that couldn’t come from a bottle. He always maintained his home-spun appeal to those who knew him and, as late as 1880, the U.S. Census in Moore County listed his profession as "farmer".
Daniel was the first in Tennessee to use hot-air balloons as a promotional tool and often fascinated the locals with his advertising antics. Jack Daniel also started the practice of issuing commemorative bottles to celebrate certain events. He generally stayed with his trademark square bottle, which some say he did as a symbol of his being a "square shooter", which was a popular saying of his day.
Being a distiller, however, also had its downsides for Jack Daniel. The political machines of the day often saw his industry fall in and out of favor with the various attitudes that ran state government. Jack generally stayed in the middle of the road politically, but he supported those he felt guarded his interests and often participated in political campaigns – the most notable being the celebrated "War of the Roses" political campaign between Democrat Robert and Republican Alfred Taylor. The two East Tennessee brothers had been selected by their political parties to seek the Governor’s seat in Tennessee. It got its name from the fact that Democrats wore white roses and the Republicans red to show which brother they supported and the ensuing campaign garnered national attention. This was a point not lost on Jack Daniel, even though he supported the losing Republican candidate. During the campaign, Jack Daniel gathered some local musicians together to form a band for Alfred Taylor. The band livened up the often boring political rallies and became an integral part of the colorful campaign.
In 1892, Jack Daniel decided it was time the City of Lynchburg formed an official town band. Before radio or television, there wasn’t much to occupy the townspeople in small cities and the town band often provided the only means of entertainment. In fact, it is estimated that as many as 15,000 small town bands existed in the United States in those days and they were a source of pride for every citizen. With $227 and a Sears & Roebuck catalog, Jack Daniel purchased a full compliment of nickel plated instruments with cases. When they arrived three weeks later, Jack began helping to assemble the band. The Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band, as they were called, began playing at every possible opportunity and were soon the most famous band in the region.
-
The first Lynchburg Band was made up of 13 people, including a number of Jack Daniel’s employees. Although the instruments were less than perfect, the band made up for it with enthusiasm – most playing in the white gazebo that stood in the courthouse square.
In 1903, the word spreading across the South was about the excitement expected at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. While Jack Daniel had many interests, he had never taken his interest away from the distillery and his reputation was expanding beyond the coasts of America. Like his former mentor Rev.Dan Call, Jack, who never married or had children, brought many of his family members into the company and was teaching his nephew Lem Motlow the Jack Daniel method of making whiskey. The young man shared his uncle’s enthusiastic interest in the family business and also had a head for promotion. With the World’s Fair coming to America, he and others persuaded Jack to enter his brew in an exhibition and tasting of fine whiskeys. The Tennessean was up against some of the world’s best distilleries in Europe and had never been put to that kind of test. In fact, the company had more to lose than gain if it failed, but the pride he and his employees had for their product wouldn’t be denied.
Of the 20 such whiskeys entered in the competition from around the world, Jack Daniel’s Whiskey was awarded the World’s Fair’s Gold Medal and honored as the world’s best whiskey. In those days, that meant something and soon Jack Daniel’s whiskey began picking up a notable amount of business from Europe. In 1905, Jack Daniel’s Whiskey won another Gold Medal in a similar competition in Liege, Belgium– adding to the beverage’s international appeal.
Sometime around 1906, Jack Daniel arrived at the office one morning and tried to open the safe in his office. He either couldn’t remember the combination or wasn’t getting it right on the dial. In a fit of anger, he kicked the safe and broke his toe. Daniel never had it attended to by a doctor and an infection soon set up in the toe. The gangrene eventually spread throughout his system and resulted in Daniel losing his leg to the disease. With the illness starting to wear on him, he began turning more and more of the company’s operations over to his nephew Lem and eventually deeded the business over to him.
Jack Daniel survived until Oct. 9, 1911 when he died of complications due to the gangrene infection. The Tennessee legend was laid to rest amid ceremony in the Lynchburg Cemetery. By his grave stone was placed two wrought iron chairs. While he was known to have no great love of his life, the chairs were often reportedly occupied by the ladies he had dated in his life.
Lem Motlow took on a job that he excelled at and, like his uncle, kept the business going through state and federal prohibitions. Following his uncle’s death, he issued the first black label whiskey in 1912 to go with the traditional green label Jack Daniel had used. The difference being the black label was aged longer than the green.
Motlow was once forced to move the operations to St. Louis, but soon returned to Tennessee as Prohibition swept across the nation. Motlow was forced to close down the distillery and started trading mules. Motlow’s head for business soon developed the mule trading into one of the region’s most lucrative enterprises. In fact, the company grew to be the biggest such operation in the southeast. Even though it seemed like the end for Jack Daniel’s Whiskey, the Tennessean took every opportunity to try and end Prohibition. The family never shirked their traditional responsibility to their community and were among Lynchburg’s most respected families. His son John Reagor Motlow, who was a veteran in World War I, served a term in the state senate where he became a staunch supporter of public education.
When Prohibition finally ended, Motlow reopened the distillery and went back to making and improving upon the whiskey. Like his uncle before him, Motlow continued the tradition of being a good corporate citizen to his city and state. The Jack Daniel’s name soon again became a household word. Although the unique taste of Jack Daniel’s had long been characterized as a Tennessee Whiskey, it had throughout its life been officially listed by the U.S. Treasury Department as a bourbon, which classed it with Kentucky’s noted whiskey. In 1944, Lem Motlow finally achieved the recognition sought for many years in Lynchburg. The United States Government issued a report to the company that stated:
"Your charcoal mellowing process produces characteristics unknown to bourbons, ryes, and other whiskeys and thus Jack Daniels is officially designated as a Tennessee Whiskey."
For the promotionally minded Motlow, it was one of the best official documents that had ever graced the Distillery’s doors. His second generation effort to save and perpetuate the company his uncle founded had become a resounding success. He had pulled it through a time when the nation’s best distillers had gone under and left behind a tradition that still continues to this day. Although it never bore his name, except in fine print, Lem Motlow had kept alive the company the City of Lynchburg so relied on for not only economic survival, but a source of character unequaled anywhere.
Motlow remained a vital part of the company until his death on Sept. 1, 1947. Like his uncle before him, he was laid to rest in the Lynchburg Cemetery.

I am so confused..... so Jack Daniel's nickname was Uptown, or did he just let city folks drink his whiskey? :headscratch: What about the folks who live Downtown? They only get to drink George Dickel? :headscratch: :headscratch:

Some really great stuff here folks. Thanks for sharing.
Sabot is my in-game name. There's not a lot behind it I'm afraid. Apparently though it means meaning things from a shoe to some sort of artillery round. I think even a boat is called Sabot. However I picked it because I heard it in a song and it sounded cool.

I flew as "quisp" at air warrior and the warbirds beta and up to 1.1 but went to Icepac in 1996 because all I ever heard were the names "tupac and ice cube" on the TV at the time so I made fun of them by combining the name.
I nicknamed a friend "icecuban" and noticed that it fits here so..........maybe it will be a future handle if I don't use "nicepac" or "higgins" and form a squad called "robin master's estate".
Ink......I still fly as "Usurpr" at a multiplayer sim.
Not enough letters to the name so had to get rid of the "e" but my other name was "higgns"....again one letter short because of the sim.

"Flying as OldNo7" (in sig)
-
Started out as SPKmes (combo of my nickname and last name.I used SPK for when games only gave you three letters for the high scorers table)...basically because I had no idea what I was naming when I first put that in...was considering changing it due to people calling check six SPKm....boom tower......(this and the fact I had no idea about SA so ended up in the tower)
Then Spatula took me under his wing, got offered a spot in the AKUAG and became Tongs (almost chose to be Gr8ter)

I started out in '99 as Ace101 and was in the Nighthawks with players like NHCouger, NHBubbi, NHRapier, XnachoX, and Attila. Used to enjoy flying in the constant Typh missions Fariz of Giap would make back in those days. Then I changed my name to TW9 (Ted Williams #9). I joined Most Wanted as MWTW9 and flew with MWDogg (Now AKDogg) MWXX, MWReaper, and MWHun are some that I remember. This is probably where I actually learned some real ACM. From there I went to Muppets after being lured over by Wldthing. This was the best squad I was ever in with Wldthing, Nomak, Urchin, Bighorn, to name a few and Fester and Kappa played a little more regularly then than they do now a days. After that I went on to join the Hornets with Busher, Sirloin, GHI, ect... Then back to the Muppets where it was basically just me Morpheus, XtremeJ, and Wax. We use to love meeting up with the BK's and 13Tas on the deck in furballs. I started my own squad briefly with Wax and a few other muppets then we all went back to the muppets where I've been since.

Like any good call sign, mine was given to me. I started AH II with some variation of firefighter paramedic. I joined the 4th FG Debden Boys squad with Knife and Magoo. I was 'obviously' a cheery person while getting killed often. I believe it was Knife that pronounced me as eeyore, and I changed my call sign the next day (originally for a laugh, but it stuck). I have been eeyore ever since. Oddly enough, not many people can pronounce the name, I hear multiple variations of eye-ore. :airplane:

Warning! Discretion advised to those sensitive about hunting.
When I was about 10 years old, a group of us snuck up on a pack of sleeping wild hogs. I was armed with a Browning A5 12 gauge and five rounds of buckshot. Needless to say, there was a whole lot of squealing going on after I emptied the gun. My friend's dad started calling me Shotgun after that, so I adopted it for every gaming persona I have created.

Your story sounds similar to mine.
You come into the game blind, and with little documentation (and that's hard to find), I simply picked something that I was really involved with racing. After playing for a short time, I realized that SCCA was difficult to say on range. My first squad decided to call me "Skah" which seemed to work for them, but still people butchered it in the MA. When I joined the AK's I had to change my name anyway, so I picked something that was simpler to say, as well as being, well, fitting... Meathd seemed to work....

AW4W CompuServe September 1996.
AW4W had an ingame CPID and a briefing room/OC name.
I took Lousey as the briefing room name and when suddenly faced with the need to give a 4 letter CPID gave Tilt ( vis pin ball error).
After a few weeks in game I had reached some level of infamy by a friendly kill on SM (Snowman) when he was on a very high kill streak.
He was obviously pissed about it but took it in good stead. Some time there after I was diving into a furball and SM txt'ed "here he comes again FullTilt".
I adopted FullTilt as my briefing room/OC name using Tilt (I liked its jousting connotations) in game and on the CompuServe forum boards.
From there Tilt has become my ID across many media forms

Many people think it's a reference to Bill Murray's character from Ghost busters. But it's not. His name was Peter Venkman.
21 years ago I came out to the Midwest to make cars at one of the big three automakers. Like all giant company's the first thing you get when you arrive is a badge ID, which is has your picture and name on it, a name plaque for your desk, and a box of business cards. The secretary who ordered those made a typo error, so my ID badge, business cards, and name plate for my desk all said "Vinc"
People were confused, of course, and started pronouncing it "vink". We laughed and made jokes because, well it sounds silly and stupid. Eventually I got a correct ID, but the nickname stuck. "Vink" has been my nickname since. Vinkman was just a cheesy way of making it sound like a call sign. :aok

I am arriving late to this thread.
My handle history is a sad history. :frown:
Oakland Raiders had not a winning season in 10 years since I joined. They probably wont either after this year as well. :cry
That's it! That's the history of my handle! :furious
-
Sadly, my own handle is not as cool as it could have been. Many of my fellow pilots think it's from the arrow manufacturer. Although I've practiced with bows I've never actually shot one of those. The truth was I was trying hard to come up with a good call sign when I first signed on, but most of them were taken. My wife had left a House Mouse stamp in the office with a character named Muzzy on it, so I typed that into AH and it kind of stuck.

I joined Fighter Ace in 1999, I was Horses_Ace, I then joined the Hells Angels Squadron (of Fighter Ace) and became Hells_Horses_Ace. When FA ended in 2010 I came to AH and there wasn't enough room for my name so I dropped Horses. Our Squad had to drop Angels because the AH already had a Squad named the Hells Angels and they were complaining, so we changed our name to Hells Squadron...
=S= Ace

Bruv was my school nickname. Opted this in FA 2.0 year 2000,
Joined The Empire Aces as TEA_BRUV, my FPH at the time was a certain TEA_HAMMOND who now flies in AH under a name I will respect to keep private. He was always #1.
When FA went to 3.0 in 2002 the graphics were re-done and lost lots of players. TEA didn't really make it and nearly died out. I did actually try AH1 at this point for about a week, didn't have a clue what was going in here except flying a niki about and hoing the crap out of loads of people, thought sod this, this game sucks and got a new PC.
Joined The Damned and flew the dreaded underscores
_Bruv_ for 3 years until I started my own squad The Few in 2005.
We were a mish mash group of other squadrons that fought the Japanese Horde during my time zone. A group collaborative protecting the Queen's assets.
Came to AH in May 2005 after the drop in numbers got too much for me to deal with been here since. ;)

Some guy out of the blue PM ed me and politely asked if he could join my Spitfire on my next sortie "to see how it is done"
I said OK, then went out and killed 9 guys reversing one after the other and annihilating them with snapshots and barrel roll defences. All he saw was total ownage of piecemeal horde monkeys.
I went and plonked it on the runway and ever since then I've had Midway!

I said OK, then went out and killed 9 guys reversing one after the other and annihilating them with snapshots and barrel roll defences. All he saw was total ownage of piecemeal horde monkeys.
I went and plonked it on the runway and ever since then I've had Midway!
:D
Awesome as you are, Sir. :aok

I was EAGuruJac after EA bought AW when moderating.

Seriously? If so, very cool. While I don't have a sailboat, my other passion beyond my gaming rig and AH is my 2002 SeaRay Sundancer 240 I keep on Lake Norman, NC. Nice for a small cabin cruiser...still looks nearly brand new and runs as well as the first day it came off the lot. Roomy too...but I don't think I could get my gaming rig on it. :D
Just noticed this, so apologies for the late post / reply.

I am returning to aerial combat MMOGs for the first time in 9 years. I left IEN's Warbirds in 2004 due to the constant bickering and poor customer service.
Welcome, Blinder! Here, you will find excellent customer service . . . and bickering. ;) I guess larger online communities of enthusiasts always involve some bickering. Here, there are a lot of folks who are very welcoming of new players and everyone (even the rude, obnoxious players) wants more new players. If there are folks who rub you the wrong way, please ignore them and know that they don't represent everyone here.
My handle ("Brooke") is my first name, picked as my handle back in 1988 in Air Warrior, when I didn't really know what a handle was. Since picking it back then, I got known as that and then didn't want to change it thereafter.

You know, I do have to say that what I saw was an amazingly inspirational sight to behold. All that haven't had the privilege to see what I saw, the complete and total unadulterated annihilation of anyone that Bruv looked at with his guns in the middle of a furball with cons all over the place and near him, and him moving like an expert gymnast in that mass, to then leaving it guns empty, then still encountering a P38 who he quickly reversed, scared off, and then landed his nine victories not counting the P38, as just another sortie, was... well... further words escape me. :O
Let's just say it was one of the most rewarding and inspirational events I have personally witnessed. :rock
Few realize just how skilled, experienced and talented pilots like Bruv are. Kazaa, Levi, some others.., we are very lucky to be amongst them in the skies of Aces High.
May many of you, one day, be as skilled, or at least appreciate the level of skill I have witnessed. :aok
:salute FPH Bruv119, :salute Sir, indeed.
-
glad you enjoy it Midway, i personally find it disgusting and dispiriting how good Bruv and many others are at this game!
they make it look so easy :bhead it's not easy :(
for example, in last weekends first BoB frame, I was with Bruv pretty much the whole time. I managed to fly pretty well (by my low standards) and put rounds into 3 Emils and 1 Stuka, grabbing 4 assists without taking any hits myself throughout the whole frame.
Bruv, seemingly effortlessly, racked up 10 confirmed kills. It's not like we even got into any really big fights! :headscratch:
he probably took a good solid dump before takeoff to make himself lighter in the air :old:

After now three years this month, I agree with you it is not easy, but it is possible, and like any expert at their chosen sport, I'm sure very rewarding to be at or near the top of the mountain. Certainly is inspiring for me.

And when you (the shooter) are called out to man up and grab a plane then meet the shootee to settle the concern, please do so rather than log off saying "You will die and I'm tired".
Still waiting on that duel, icepacker. As a certain tatooed Muppet would say: "The DA is that way ---->"
Be back Thursday. Looking forward to it.

Don't forget, I gave a warning before capping you up but you ignored it.
I don't do the dueling arena as my connection is dodgy at best because I am on a cell phone.
You would do well to excise the profanity from your PM's to me in the arena.
You can look up "twinboom" or "system" because they are willing to sell out a fellow countryman and give you precise vectors to a person's location.........which I consider a violation of the terms of service.

Cell phone, eh? That's a new one.
No need to talk to them...I'll just have to keep a watch out for you in the MA then. Happy playing, icester!
-
BTW, Icepop.... I'm pretty well known for being polite and friendly. The two words I used in my PM were inappropriate and I do apologize for using them....it's extremely rare for me to get angry enough to curse. I do not, however, apologize for getting mad. I didn't see your "notice" on 200, but if that's the way you like to play, more power to you...it just seems like a sad, cowardly approach to getting kill / perky points so you can go fly a Tempest.
Let me know if you ever get a decent connection. The way you were PMing back saying all I do is get on top of a fight I figured you wanted to go a few rounds. I promise you I know how to do more than "just pick".
Sorry to all for the digress from the topic at hand. :salute I'll not respond further to the Icicle (or was it Icetray?) in this thread. Please continue...

Needed to think of something when I first tried out the game. Tried a few names that were taken so since I live in CO, "Aspen" came to mind and I flew under that for a while. Took a couple years off and came back. Aspen is about my least favorite town and sorta sounds like a perfume name so I decided to go with something else. I shoot a lot and work in the firearm industry and AMAX is a model of bullet. Short, easy to read and pronounce when getting a check six....which I need a lot of.

"Iko Iko" is a much-covered New Orleans song that tells of a parade collision between two "tribes" of Mardi Gras Indians and the traditional confrontation. The song, under the original title "Jock-A-Mo," was written in 1953 by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford in New Orleans. The story tells of a "spy boy" (i.e. a lookout for one band of Indians) encountering the "flag boy" or guidon carrier for another "tribe." He threatens to "set the flag on fire."
Crawford set phrases chanted by Mardi Gras Indians to music for the song. Crawford himself states that he has no idea what the words mean, and that he originally sang the phrase "Chock-a-mo," but the title was misheard by Chess Records and Checker Records president Leonard Chess, who misspelled it as "Jock-a-mo" for the record's release.
"Jock-a-mo" was the original version of the song "Iko Iko" recorded by The Dixie Cups in 1965. Their version came about by accident. They were in a New York City studio for a recording session when they began an impromptu version of "Iko Iko," accompanied only by drumsticks on studio ashtrays.

I still long for the day where the characters from "The Love Boat" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" are swapped, with Piccard as Captain Stubing, Geordi as Gopher, Woopi as Isaac, Deanna Troi as Cruise Director Julie, and Dr. Crusher as Dr. Adam and vice versa.

Havermeyer was a B-25 bombardier in Joseph Heller's famous WWII book "Catch 22" whom the other pilots hated because he'd lead them on the straightest, most accurate path to target irrespective of how good a target that made him and his comrades for AA fire. I'm very willing to sacrifice a drone or two to achieve my mission, so I felt the name matched well.
Hopefully the families of the pilots and crew I've gotten killed don't hate me for it though. :(

Mine is pretty simple. I joined the Air Force in 1988 and was given the AFSC 2W0X1, Munitions Systems Specialist - affectionately known as as an Ammo troop. Some called us BB Stackers.
What's funny to me is when I started playing Warbirds in 1998, the handle Ammo was taken by a very popular virtual pilot. Decent guy I understand. Since ammo wasn't available, I chose ammoman. When AH Beta opened, I quickly created an account and established the handle ammo. No looking back now.

I'm glad this has come up!
I occasionally get idiots, including my own country <Rooks>, who berate me for my in game handle. It happened again a couple of weeks ago. The guy kept going on and on about how my name was disgraceful and insensitive to the player base.
MOSQ has nothing to do with my religion! And even if it did, keep your religion out of the game!
I started in Air Warrior for Windows on AOL. The in-game icon for the Mosquito was MOSQ. It became one of my favorite planes to fly. I loved flying deep into AZ/CZ land to bomb factories and escape, almost no fighter was fast enough to catch me.
When AW closed I came over here and discovered the Mosquito had guns, yahoo! I adopted the handle MOSQ since I knew that would be my primary plane, and still is 12 years later.

I flew as 031598 for about a year.. maybe a lil longer... then I wanted to get a real name, my daughter was walking by and I asked her what name would be good... she was 6 yo at the time... she said, "well, you play rock, and planes fly in the sky... why not SkyRock! I thought it was a great name!

Was that her maiden name or married name?
Alaskan's are a different "breed" especially from the people here in the lower 48. The subsistence culture sets different standards for everyone.

Pretty sure maiden but one could never tell with her. She may have been married before we hired her

way back, around 2005 when I was watching the history channel I saw this advertisement, I downloaded the game and sat and pondered when it ask for a name. So, I used the name I had been given in the latter years of my army career "Hard7". Now, that name was bestowed on me due to my military sign of 7, and my soldiers perception of "hard". Thus they called me "Hard 7". After Infantry, Ranger, 82nd, and all those great Infantry units I served in I felt it appropriate to use it. However, in game perceptions of the name "Hard 7" , well it wasn't as well received after quickly gaining a umm, personal meaning it was never intended to be. So, when I joined my second squad "Aces and 8's, (a great squad that still survives to this day), I changed my name to A8Hunter. The squad welcomed the name with great relief :). I chose the name simply because I enjoyed being a hunter in the sky and we were compelled to use the A8 lead in. After leaving the Aces and Eights (probably a mistake). I went to the Few, wow what a humbling experience. I've never known anyone who could match the skill of the members of the Few, even to this day. (I know there are many who would disagree but it's just an opinion). At that time I felt like a pure Jekyll and Hyde type of guy, changing squads, countries, mates, well I just picked up on that name "Jekyll". As time progressed, well I moved on from the Few, along with some awesome gamers, to the Top Gun. (ok, like the 10th Mnt, or 25th, old Rangers go there to die), it was mainly the Few, on the American soil.
I changed jobs, went on the road, and now get to play so very little. I now chose my final name of "Agony", after realizing the pure Agony of having to chose another name, once again. In a great squad now (JG52 Experten), with many great members of the AH community. Now if only I could get home to play the game again, well that would be great. Missing the game and great gamers who play it is well......
Agony.

Oh, and I almost forgot I would walk the hells of the desert with great men like Wagger, and Dirtdart (and so many like them), who gave so much of themselves in defense of our great country. Salute my friends.

From Sept. 1999 through around 2007 I went by "AlgyFT". I think I kept the FT since I had been in the FT's in Warbirds. Around 2007 I switched to "Biggles2", which is what I still go by. I would have chosen "Biggles", but somebody already took it.
