Title: Veteran players
Post by: Zacherof on September 18, 2013, 03:54:21 PM
Kind of a silly question but
How long does one have to play this game to be considered a veteran player?

the funniest thing happened at that airshow.  I met gwurtzel first and was sitting with him when I go the message from zach that he was at the airshow so, i went looking for him.  after saying hi and while he was getting settled down, I went back to look for gwurtzel and together we came back to see zach.

gwurtzel walks up to him and in a friendly gentile manner slaps him on the side of the head and says "that's for shooting me down in your 190 last week".  I literally dropped on the floor laughing my butttt off.  not even the airplanes flying around could top that.

I remember asking "Who the hell is 999000 and why did a zipcode just rip me plane apart?" thus began the legend "Are they B17s? under 10k? check to see if 999 was online, yeah? just ignore them..... 20 seconds later two fighters lose their wings..... its funnier when they ask on comms about "B17s under 10k"...

Veterans know to look up that player list, other ones just attack and find out what a real floating death star is..

When did ah 2 come out?

You are so no vet  :rofl

Seriously... I would use several criteria:

If you one of:

- You played AH1... and probably miss good old CT that AH2 had killed
- If you payed HTC more than $1,000  (or...)
- You served in military

you are probably vet.

On the other hand, the worth of $15 it depends on your salary. If you have $5,000 monthly income $15 is very little, on the other hand, if you have monthly salary of $100, like me during 3 years of the regular service (or active duty/active service) in IDF/IAF, than $15 are much more than just few bucks so it probably should be - you payed a monthly salary rather than payed $1,000, than you are vet.

So if we take the salary factor than I'm... a Triple vet

The formula used is quite long, and involves cases of beer consumed, pizza crusts under the computer table, and that sort of thing, all multiplied and divided by each other, including such factors as number of joysticks trashed divided by the number of successful landings less the number of deaths. There is more but I've bored you enough already.

Me, personally?  I downloaded and played AH on the first day of the open beta, during the early days of September, 1999.

I have a feeling that to be considered a "Vet" amongs this mash-up of pilots, one needs to go through a few "trials".....

1. you must have a story from in-game which only a  hand full of other players claim to have experienced, and that many others will claim knowledge of..

2. You no longer care about "earning perks, so I can fly that xxxxx plane!"
3. You've watched more documentaries on WWII on a Cathode-Ray Tube television than you have from youtube....
4. You joined AH2 because of a History Channel advertisement
5. From what I've read on the forum's, you also must be "trolled" or "flamed" on the forum for one reason or another, usually because you're more awesome than that other guy....

I've got a LONG ways to go to be in the same class as some of these ol'  :old: pilots...  :neener:

Either way, so far it's a good community. I'm just a new player all wide-eyed and bushy tailed I suppose...

A Veteran (or a retired VET) could be described as playing warbirds and that game on AOL (and cant remember the name of it) waiting on Aces High to come out. Could have been around so long that some of the player he knew is gone now. Attended the First 2 conventions and has the awesome black jacket to show for it. (I still wear it to this day) There are a few out there. May return to the game someday. I dont have a game machine anymore so would have to build a new one and get new controls.

Air Warrior was on more than AOL (spit), though playing it on Genie and spending enough a year to make a right size decent car payment was before I discovered the game (dammit - but not before Muzzy did, apparently). A veteran could well be the proverbial AW player who subscribed to the Bigweek news reader and made fun of people on AOL. ;)  :D

Some would say, unless you had a tail number .... (making me and a lot of folk unqualified.)

dweebs thou have been and dweebs shalt thou always be.

Quote
"And NOW!" they shrieked. "FINALLY art we Vets! Scourges of the Sky are WE!" Yet again, from the smoldering blue wreckage came the icy cry, "Nay, foul ack-runner. Thou art but headon Dweebs." And thus was born the Headon Dweeb, the Dora Dweeb, and the Ack-running Dweebs. And as the pitiful Dweebs began their long quest through the Promised Land of Rolling TerrainTM, and were blinded by the Sun GlareTM in search of their Holy Hurricane and the Zerstorer, did the voice of Doc rain down from on high and sweepeth them in a sandstorm of despair: "For all who play at Warbirds shalt always be Dweebish. Dweebs wert thou born. Dweebs thou art. Dweebs shalt thou be." And it was good.

13-14 years for me, plus a couple in AW.  Still can't fly a fighter without spinning in though.  :lol.

Well, being a vet  ( military , and received combat ribbons, battle e, etc ) never really mattered to me ...

I just appreciate all the others who served , especially the ones who gave all!

As for video flying combat Sims,... Well I think anyone who played via Delphi, compuserve and before AW4W

Maybe could say those who played svga AW....

As for Fester's quote regarding dweebs ( lol ), seems both AW & WB had nearly identical or closely matched "books of" ..
regarding the history of both games... Some parts even written by the same player for each game, if I remember correctly..

Just learn to have fun,  and if you are able give back to the community in any way you can....
It is the communities that keeps us carrying on and moving forward!  So help the new players if you can

Cheers

Remember a vet as military goes is no longer on active duty. This makes me both a veteran of this game and The US Army. I was lucky enough to serve 5 years during peace time. Desert Storm happened about 2 years after I left the Army. Grenada before I joined.

Thank you for your service, Indian  :salute

as for my above quote, yes, I am a combat veteran myself........... I was just saying I never looked at being a Veteran more than just doing a job I volunteered to do for an agreed amount of time no matter what it might cost me... anyways it also is a family thing as well seems a handful of each generation keep stepping up...., I can see though rereading what I originally typed might mislead people in how I think or something .......

sorry if my original post confused anyone

My mom is a real vet. She doesn't play, though. In fact, she doesn't even have a computer. Does she count?

No offense taken. was only reminding everyone that vets are not currently active. I agree about each generation serving I have a Great Uncle who flew in the Army's 8th Air force, My Dad was a 20 year veteran of the Army (Vietnam) My Aunt (Dads sister) 20 year Navy veteran both active and reserves. My cousin (same aunts son) served in the Army. oth My Aunt and cousin were in desert. storm.

I thought this thread was interesting from the point I was one of the original plahyers when Aces High went live. I enjoyed it way to much. miss it a lot just have higher priorities at this time.

Now a story from the second convention. 2 good friends attended with me, I was one the the first trainers in this game so they challenged me to a dual in the training arena. They chose the 262 for the dual if you can call a 3 way fight a dual. We each chose our airfield close enough to get back in fight after we got shot down. This was all for fun. I wound up in the middle of them and proceeded to loop from field to field killing them just as they got off the ground. They accused me of cheating it wasn't cheating I failed to tell them that at that them there was no fuel burn or ammo lost. So I equipped the 262 with 1/4 tank fuel mad it light and fast very nimble. After a few runs like that I couldn't stop laughing and told them what was happening.

And to all Military Veterans Thanks for serving.
