Dog fighting of today is far different then it was in the past, it was once a suit and tie affair, the dogs didn't fight to the death....(for the most part)
they had rules and an opponent could call a "turn" if a dog turned away from the dog that he was fighting, they would break up the dogs and bring them to opposing corners(this is one reason why the dogs could never be human aggressive they actually put down any "man fighters" as they were called)....and then release the dog that had the turn called on it...if the dog didn't immediately Scratch (attack) (they called it scratching due to the sounds the claws make) the other dog, the fight was over...there were a lot of rules....they Loved their dogs....They were the first to keep official records of the dogs Lineage.
one thing people forget the dog is what it is because of its history...
the American Pittbull today is NOT the same dog ether, it lost its love of people due to mass modern bad breeding..(they were called the nanny dog...ww1 hero was an APBT) it was the most beloved dog in america and was exactly what america used to be..the originals were breed for the desire to fight....Their "Game"...or what some may refer to as "heart" in man.
that and only that was how they choose what dog to breed....
fighters don't "train" the dogs to fight, they do it naturally...you have to train them NOT to fight.
Morf knows all this.... :D
I would never have fought my APBT but I respect were her breed came from.....I am glad because without her ancestors I would Never have had the greatest dog man ever made. I have owned a few dogs, and Mia a true 45 lb dynamo, was the only dog that never growled at my kids. By far the greatest Dog I have ever met.

Yes Ink,I've been a student of the fighting arts for over 50 years, this includes the bloodsports!
You were pretty close on your description of a match, but they actually had 3 lines in the"pit" the scratch line was in the center of the pit and the dog that had the "turn" called on had to cross the center line.
The term"he's not up to scratch" comes from this activity,so does being axed from the job and several other common terms.
Ink mentioned "game" this was the most desired trait and money was no object to obtain a dog that was game. While Ink is correct that most fight didn't end in a death there was a term "dead game" that was used to describe a dog with so much heart it actually crossed the scratch line only to die as a result of the fight. All of this was the "gentlemans" pastime andtremendous amounts of money were wagered.
You can read ads in the London Times about dogs standing at challenge and the cost of a match,5000 pounds was not uncommon! Sometimes animals other than dogs were used, even humans were matched in the pits against dogs!
Yes it's a brutal affair, something I would never get involved with but I have a keen interest in the history and mostly the types of dogs used. Most don't realize that dogs as small as 5 pounds were fought or that some of the smaller dogs would be placed in the pit to kill rats and these rats were often as large as the dogs!
IIRC the world record is 1 minute and 28 seconds to dispatch 100 rats........ wow!
It's a cruel and indecent activity but like anything lest we forget we are bound to repeat.

ya I wasn't gonna write up all the rules :P
I couldn't imagine fighting Mia...no friggen way, but I know without their history those dogs would not be...
its crazy what some will do though, that story about the lions was insane... :O
it drives me nuts to see what has become of my dog....the friggen new "bully" is a disgusting atrocity.

Pretty much sums it up... :aok

Because of the bloodline you describe, they love fighting as much as a lab loves it's ball. When you don't accept that reality and never correct for it during training is when you have problems. If your the type of person who's animals never leave the backyard, don't get a pit.

Suns,
there are very few"bloodlines" that still produce "game" dogs! Most the dogs people call pits are the furthest thing from a true pitbull you can get. They have been crossed with breeds that are known to be human aggressive, something a "game" dog of bloodlines would never be.
My dogs rarely leave the yard, except to see the Vet or the odd late night walk. I don't own the "typical" pitbull I have Staffordshire Bullterriers which are the original fighting dogs from England, these are the dogs known as the Nanny Dog and are 1 of only a couple breeds which state in the breed standard that they have an affinity towards children.
While you are correct that they do enjoy a good tussel, mine would wrestle in the yard all day if I let them but it never got outta hand and they never hurt each other because it is play to them. If I let them do this with say a lab or shepard well then the other breed might get hurt because they just cant handle the technique of the terriers.
I do agree they are not the dog for everyone and should never be considered as a first dogma lab is a much better choice but all dogs are born the same,it's how they are raised that makes the difference.
:salute
PS: I once owned a UDX certified English Bull Terrier,as far as I know the only dog of the breed to obtain the title,I cant take credit for it as I had a handler train him but he was my dog!

My Stuka is one everyone calls "pit bull" and so is his litter mate Tank. Their mom was red nose pit and bull mastiff, the dad was a big red nose pit. My boys can't hold their licker, they LOVE people and have been very much socialized and trained. They currently hold a Canine Good Citizen Certification with AKC and the State of Michigan. The both have learned Freestyle Canine Dog Dancing.
My Boe is lab/pit mix that is training for his CGC test on Sunday and goes to many events with my rescue. I am a HUGE for the Bully breeds. People need to understand that pitbulls or dogs that look like them are a bunch of different breeds mixed together whether it be for color, head size....whatever the case may be. All I know is dog fighters are dirt bags and I hope they all rot in prison when busted. Mike Vick should still be in prison, not playing football. Once a dirt bag, always a dirt bag!
There are no bad dogs, just bad owners. Your dog is what you want them to be. Just like your children. Training is most important and only people willing to do training should own any dog. No matter what breed it is.

I blame Walt Disney for this kind of anthropomorphic thinking. They are "animals" not people.

Rich,
you can blame Disney all you want,I got my first Bullterrier because of the Disney movie "the incredible journey". However that doesn't change the fact that all puppies are the same and how you raise and train them will determine how they behave as adults.
I don't treat my dogs as children or people, they are dogs!

that is where you are wrong, my dogs are my kids too, i teach them respect and manners like my kids. i would never let my kids reek havoc all over so why would i let my dogs? maybe it is just me being a responsible dog owner. atleast i can say my boys are very well behaved and because of a lot of training went into it. my kids are also the same way. well behaved and know their manners.

Look I know what its like to love your dog. Nobody loves dogs, or their dog, more then I do.
But they are still an animal and not a person. They will act on instinct and I dont take any chances with mine.
Im sorry but ive taken to many dog bite reports from owners who were astounded "Muffy" took a chunk out of baby Timmy.

thing is, people should never leave their dogs unattended with kids. Kids are mean. I trust my pack 100% but would never leave them alone with kids because of this reason. Dogs can only take so much. Hell, iI get annoyed by kids. People think its great that kids can climb all over their dogs but do they watch the dogs body language? The dog is probably looking at them for help but they dontdon't see it. A responsible dog owner would never put their dog in a bad situation that could set them up for ffailure to begin with. I know I surely wouldn't.

Just about the sweetest dog I've ever had the joy of having, right where she loves to be... right on my lap on the couch.

Vicious my rear end. You ought to see her try to play mom with the litter of kittens...... The only thing she knows how to hurt is a food dish!

I've had a few run-ins to support both sides. i've come across pit bulls that I knew came from good homes but were overly aggressive. Just in my neighborhood there are two pits that belong to two elderly couples. The primary factor I'd guess is that they are extremely territorial and protective of their families. One has attacked my dogs in our own yard and the other has been vicious towards walkers out on the street.
My aunt adopted a little female pit that was rescued from an abusive home (the neck was raw from a chain and she was covered in fleas, ticks and dirt). Despite the circumstances, she has turned into the sweetest dog I have ever encountered. She could beg a treat from Cruella DeVille.
With proper care and socialization I'm sure they are capable of making wonderful pets, but it seems that they have a heightened feral side that should should warrant caution. Just another thing people are getting worked up over and starting witch hunts for.

That's to cool Betty, the pink tutu is perfect on Tank! Sort of ying and yang if you ask me,the big bad pitbull in a pink tutu....... Poster material if you ask me!
I see it now,Tank in a tutu with the caption..... Does this dress make my butt look fat!....... :devil
Betty it's great you're involved in doggie dancing, not something I would do because I'd make my dog look bad but it's a great activity to keep the dogs outta trouble! A tired dog is always a good dog.
When mine is being a pest,I throw a ball or toy for her until she's had enough and then we don't see her for a couple hours. She's usually curled up somewhere sleeping.

Well, Betty, in just a few hours on Wednesday we saw your pitty population and decided to double it, plus one!
Previously it was just Sissy, seen here chilling on the couch with her buddy Panzer...
Well, our girl Sissy, unknown to us when we adopted her just short of 2 months ago, was carrying little troopers! We thought she looked like it a few weeks ago, and took her in to the vets office, and he said "no, no puppies on the x-rays, must be false pregnancy. Either over protective feelings towards the new family, or the new litter of kittens she seems to hover over. But not pregnant."
Well, he was wrong! Between 8:30 am Wednesday morning and about noon, they came one right after another!
The daddy, it turns out, was the neighbor's dog, a black and white full-blooded pit, next door to the guy we got Sissy from. Apparently Sissy had figured out how to get out of the fence around their property without the guy knowing it!

and our boy Butters, the orange cat who has fallen in love with Sissy the momma doggie since we brought her home, spent almost the entire day in exactly this spot, watching it all happen! He thinks he's the dad! :rofl
(http://imageshack.us/a/img10/1186/8fya.jpg)
<---- hasn't gotten a lot of sleep the last 2 nights...... :D

OMGGG!!! SOOOOOO stink in cute!! I just had a momma and liter of 10 here since the pups were 2 days old. When they left to new fosters, they were 8 weeks old and fully vetted for their age and ready for adoption. All have since found new homes. There was a little black and white one like the one u have that has white down muzzel, hes my favorite. They are fun but lots of work. I miss them but holy cow for little babies they are lots of work to clean up after. Momma did great until they were about 5 weeks old.

If any of you are on Facebook can you help and sign this petition to save a pit pup and overturn a stupid ban?
http://www.change.org/petitions/animal-control-of-bermuda-we-ask-that-you-change-the-laws-pertaining-to-the-ban-of-pit-bull-ownership-in-bermuda-and-as-a-result-immediately-cease-the-planned-euthanization-of-hershey-and-immediately-return-him-to-his-family?share_id=Bwkgglkbnu&utm_campaign=share_button_action_box&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition
-
Signed..
Just by the by .... What is the punishment for the thieves? any news on them?....they should be the ones getting euthanized
-
Signed....sad thing though, this happens all to often. Its horrible. And BSL Laws are all over the world, makes me sick, that is what we fight for. Right now there are 75 breeds on the Breed Specific Legislation Law list, so if they pass this in your area, they can take your dog if it is a breed on the list. Emailing, phone calls and letters help out if you are in an area or interested in just being a voice for the voiceless. This is what we fight every day for, to change this stupid laws that are killing innocent lives.....
-
Pit Bulls are handsome animals I must say.

Unfortunately.....
