Several players have noticed other players sitting in the tower for LONG periods of time. there are several theories being bounced about as to why, i personally accept the one that says they don't want miss out on the free perks, should their team win the map. what ever the reason, this is driving up the ENY, and putting that side at a major disadvantage. today i noticed for most of the day, we had 77 bishops logged in, and only 41 in flight. with and ENY reaching as high as 16. while the Nights and Rooks had less players logged in, but nearly the same actually in flight.
So how about adding a simple tower timer, say if you're towered for more than 15 minutes.. you get discoed ?
-
I have thought about the same thing many times. I know several who sit in the tower for 15+ mins catching up on chat, so I'd say auto disco after a certain amount of inactivity (no mouse movements, keyboard or joystick input, etc). Even as much as 2 hours would greatly help the ENY situation, especially early mornings when this seems to be the worst (I have seen as high as 29 ENY when we only had 30 players on and 11 in flight).
But yeah, assuming it's an inactivity timer and not just time spent in the tower, I'd say +1 :)
-
if there is an auto disco then those who really are afk for hours will just go to a rear base span in hangar and j just sit there.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing as i was typing, but i figured one step at a time. i wouldn't wanna interfere with the guys who are spawn camping, they are adding to the game in their own way. But even spawn campers look around, or chat right ? so i think an inactivity timer would work. hell... if you don't touch your keyboard or mouse for an hour, it's a pretty safe bet you're not involved in the game, and certainly not contributing to your country.

ok, I own a ch stick and I cant use gv's because the damn thing moves all over the place. how long do you think it will take for somebody to change calibration and the turret will be moving around for hours on end while sitting in the rear?
I am not trying to play devil's advocate but your wish has been suggested dozens of times and when one "solution" is found 20 seconds later somebody thinks of a way around it.
one fact is for sure. you dont really know how many people are actually not playing for hours unless you keep tabs on each player. when you see 30 guys constantly in the tower it could just mean a turn over of players dying and upping.

So I'm at a vbase that gets horded and all the hangers go down along with the ack but I want to wait to try to get back up here ASAP. Hangers take 15 minutes to repair so I should get booted just as the hangers respawn? Brilliant.
-
how about if they haven't died or killed anything over an hour period? Or include firing any shots in some combination...
idk, might be a way around that too, just a thought

2 hour flight to strats , poof you're gone when you open doors.

so make it to include anyone who is also in a bomber that has runway behind them

ptboat spawn and just let it run. or gv run to the strats. I was once in a mission where we drove for 1 1/2 hours to get to a base in a tank. a month or two ago, perhaps 3, one guy created a mission with a dozen+ that drove to the strats for 2 hours I think.

The question doesn't seem to be, Why do we have so many inactive players? It seems to be more, What metrics are valid in determining a players "inactivity"...
I see a few good suggestions above.
1. In flight or In Tank = Active
1. a) For Flight, only when a/c leaves limits of map are you considered inactive and booted? I'm not sure if this is the case now... (someone help a noob out)
1. b) In GV, only inactive if GV has no inputs (mouse/keyboard) for x hours
(i know some guys love to wait in ambush mode for what seems like longer than necessary, but hey, it's your $15, a half or full day is too much though....)
2. In Tower & No keyboard or Mouse input received in over X hours = inactive
( I say hours because I know i'm not the only one who's taken an animal outside, or had groceries show up, etc. it's nice to come back to the game as you left it
after a reasonable interlude....)
Inactive players are simply returned to the arena selection screen.
NOTE: I have not read all the other threads, so be gentle..... :cry

Sit on runway at rear field. Profit. If you add an input requirement, miscalibrate joystick.

Miscalibrate joystick so your turret's constantly turning. Profit.

Ghost Mouse or any of a number of other macroing utilities.
No snark, just the short versions of the explanation why it won't work. :)

Isn't ENY based on people in flight anyway?

Nope. Total numbers.

The question doesn't seem to be, Why do we have so many inactive players?
Because almost nobody is doing sorties without any break all the time.
Looking at the map to determin next target, preparing a mission, choosing plane & loadout in hangar, waiting for an enemy horde to pop up, going to fetch a beer or dispose the waste products... all this contributes to "tower sitting".
And often cause and symptoms are being confused with each other. A country does not, to a large part, get ENY because of all that 'tower sitters' - the share of 'tower sitters' rises with ENY, with more & more players refusing to fly one of the planes still available as ENY goes up.
-
Which is arguably a good thing, given that the side with ENY issues likely has a fairly sizeable numbers advantage.
I'm still of the opinion that ENY isn't harsh enough.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't ENY focused on side percentage? I notice during low numbers that the ENY is working, but during high numbers it isn't. I've seen it go as high as 125 bish 93 knights 145 rooks and no ENY.
I recommend this for the "Auto Disco Tower Sitters"
To have a new feature, similar to the checkbox for the "I am AFK" thing. Where if you check it, it makes it so you aren't calculated into the ENY percentage. So if you are there for the sole reason of getting perks, or had something in real life come up. My way of balancing this would be, while that box is checked, you can't take off from any base or get in any gun, GV (or even join anyone), or join any missions. A pop-up would appear (like that of when you alt-f4), and would have it's own message with it. When the player comes back, they can un-check the box, and can fly/join or drive again.
I expect someone in the next few posts to say something to the effect "Well, they could easily abuse the ENY system with this", then that means we need to improve the ENY system!
Just an idea.

interesting idea Tinkles...very interesting.

Thats the whole point of this thread, It's a false size advantage, being as the players may be logged in and counted towards the ENY, but are actually AFK for long periods of time, and not contributing. and if you think the ENY is not harsh enough, I KNOW your not flying bishops. nothing sux worse than trying to defend a base under a ROOK horde attack, and the only thing you can up is P40 !
DISCLAIMER.... I would NEVER accuse the ROOKS of hordeing, i just used them as an example :neener:

can I borrow some of their extra time?

You know, I'm not entirely sure. All I know is that ENY in its current form is ineffective.

yes its based on % of total
if one side has 10% more than another side, eny limiting starts kicking in...
eg: bish 35% knight 37% rook 28% == no eny, because knights only 9% more than rook.
bish 35% knight 40% rook 25% = eny because knights 15% more
I've never figured out how much specifically for how much %, but the 10% is when it starts.

If you want to pay others 14.95 then sure.
Otherwise, they pay and do what they want :aok

dunno Oz, the current side switch time was due to the behavior of a minority paying 14.95. in this one thing there is a reasonable time for being inactive especially late at night, when it affects everyone on at the time, it should be addressed in some way.

The biggest reason that we have tower sitters is because they believe they need to be on-line to get the perks when the war is won. If HTC put out that you DO NOT have to be on line but only a member of the winning time for the past 12 hours maybe more people wouldn't worry about it and log off.
-

For some unknown reason, you don't get war victory perks anymore when not online. It's quite some time ago when I noticed it. A few months ago I finally did a test and logged off when my chesspiece was about to win. When I logged back on and the new map was on, I saw that my perks had not changed.
But again, for the reasons I layed out in my earlier post, the "tower sitter" problem is probably just a large exaggeration, just like the "player hopping in droves to the winning side" myth.
-
I think it also be because of the achievment requirment to be in game a certain number of hours straight to win that achievement.

Lusche, I agree with in in part, but I have seen many people afk for a long time and not just as the war is about to be won, even happens in my squad :bhead :salute
