WT is going to lose customers :)
I doubt it. The people playing WT aren't going to come to a game with graphics from the 90's regardless of the game play. WT is to Cod as AH is to Contra

EXACTLY!
AH has fallen off the lists of current games in most gaming websites. A new player looking for combat flight sims is not very likely to stumble upon AH by browsing such websites. War Thunder, IL2, DCS are difficult to miss, AH is difficult to find.
This is a good start! now this summery presentation of AH needs to be pushed into more gaming websites. FREE TWO WEEKS TRIALS + FREE OFFLINE SINGLE PLAYER MISSIONS must be emphasized, especially in an age where young players expect every online thing to be free-to-play.
The next step is to get some updated reviews and interviews - invite them if needs be!. We know most will not be super enthusiastic (the usual: graphics, steep learning cure, etc. complaints), but it does not matter - the point of getting review articles and pushing interviews is to appear at the top of the news items and be seen. Even a 7.0/10 review score will get potential players to download and try it - hey, it is free to try it out and its not like there are 50 WWII combat flight sims out there.

That trailer was disappointing, purely uninspiring.

No Dolby credits and non-German action? :D

I kind of have to agree. I wasn't really impressed, the game really looked dated in that trailer. If I was a new customer and had seen that trailer and one from WT, I would be far more inclined to go WT than AH.
ack-ack
-
While I think its great to be referenced everywhere, that video could much better. It lacks energy and rythm.

Oh great,
Hello Arlo, how is the underside of your rock today?
I commented exactly how the trailer made me feel, if that's not helping I really don't know what would be... Perhaps you would prefer me to lie?
-
I agree Dolby and Ack Ack.
There are many other player made movies that really show off the game in a better light. The one that sticks in my mind is 'The Kinslayer'. I can't remember who made it, but it was sensational. Ok, so there were no furballs or CV's in it, and it was a DA fight, but the music, the shots, the angles and everything in it would really have got people interested.
There are several others I can think of but can't remember the name of, so although I applaud the creators getting the name back out there, I feel they could have asked the player base to come up with a trailer.
Still, good work Skuzzy!

I was actually embarassed for HTC while watching the trailer. It just looks awful.

Your comment seems to be missing both suggestion and offer of assistance. I've seen
your films. You can do more than merely criticize. Did you fail to grasp that?
I would gladly both take advantage of and applaud your efforts to add a film tutoring
thread. I suspect Skuzzy would, as well.
-
WT is going to lose customers :)
Very much doubt that. :(
-
WT is going to lose customers :)
I think the actual focus is blurred. I doubt this is as much about WT
losing customers as it is AH gaining them.
-
I too think more could have been done to show a larger picture of what AH has to offer.
Maybe rocket and strafing attack on a town by a Mossi Mk IV? A gun run vs a tank by an IL-2? Perhaps a few rounds outbound from a Panther, King Tiger, or M18? How about an F6F and a A6M5 knife fighting at 10,000 ft? A P51D and a 190A-8 jockeying for position at 20,000 ft? A Spitfire diving in on a He111? The Me410 attacking bombers was nice though.
All in all, it is good for HTC to be put in front of prospective players. I'm glad they did, lets hope more players tune in.
-
The movie was alright but I feel the hit sprites diminished it.
I'd really like to see them updated eventually.

hit sprites +1, and the strafing in the P47 showed very much how bad the ground textures are

HTC know what they are doing and have been doing what they do for many many years. They know, far better than I will ever know, what they need to do and what they will do.
I've been a part of film making for only 3 years, It was strongly suggested I find a way to become a positive contributor to this forum and stop making declarations about things I do not have knowledge about.
The closest positive I thought about the trailer is that it was disappointingly uninspiring. With this feedback they not only have an opinion, they now know that trailers are supposed to inspire people to play.
-
Even though I know some things need addressed or added at some point. Perhaps it would be beneficial for HTC to update some of their visuals. Like Delirium's comment on hit sprites.
I know HTC put work going through and watching the various videos that were submitted and took time to make this. But I say that it doesn't describe HTC enough, and in some spots actually show the weaker side of AH (like SirNukes mentioning of land textures).
It is just my opinion, if you don't like it, brush it off. But this is what I was thinking of.
Icons off, best graphics possible up. Some kills from various planes on bombers. Then switch to the bombers perspective and see fighters get shot down. Show bombers hitting their target.
Switch to anti-GV planes (il2, ju87s) strafing tanks (show tank getting blown up). Anti-air shooting at strafers perhaps getting a few. Show tank vs tank combat.
Switch to a CV battle, showing 8inch firing on a town (and actually hitting something :t ) .
Then have it say something like.. "We have over *number here* planes and *number here* vehicles. (while the background changes out to many of the well-known planes of all nationalities ).
Then it ends with the aces high logo.
I think the trailer was sort of short, and didn't do enough justice for AH.
Perhaps the above trailer would be 2-3 mins long? Sort of an 'extended trailer' so to speak.
Just my humble opinion, criticize how you like.

My apologies, Dolb. Great feedback.
Carry on. :D :salute

If you watch it at YouTube (as opposed to SimHQ), the 2 comments so far allude to fond memories of the "good old days".
-
It would be nice for you to take your 3 years of experience and offer
it up for more than your own promotion but hey .... yay Dolby.
Tinkles gives details.
You're right, it would be nice wouldn't it.
-
Game video production is quite difficult, especially when you consider the film viewer we have. The hit sprites look better ingame than in the film viewer.
Actually I think it would be better to use game footage saved over HDMI capture for that promotional video.
-
at 1:27 you can see the target plane actually warping
-

That's not a warp. That's a zoomed in view of my hitting (shooting down) a P-47 then pulling back on the stick.
Zoomed in views will move the target aircraft out of view dramatically.

Agreed! :aok
I liked the video but I didn't like the music... :D

In the game when the light source is in the 2 hours at and just after dawn, or before evening. Our game has a very WT look. Or that CGI movie look. When the source is for all intensive purposes the whole sky during the rest of the time. The haze effect along with the flat paint finishes on most aircraft and vehicles. Gives the signature Aces High washed out look I've come to accept for the last decade.
In real life I've flown in places that look like the MA during the hazy washed out daytime. San Antonio around late July, early August or BWI in august comes to mind. Or Peshawar Pakistan early July just before the monsoon moves in. In both cases it's a product of heat and particulate matter in the atmosphere.
Our current haze is very realistic but, there is just a limit to the haze in the world from place to place. Definitely more clouds, and crisp azure days in the fall and winter.
What ever is happening during early morning and evening is fantastic color and light wise even in the cockpit. Wish during the full daylight it didn't just goto flat bright luminous washout and haze. But kept that early light CGI movie look. I suspect if I turned everything up in the graphics controls for the game so my FPS was single digits. I could sit on the runway at high noon and enjoy those light effects versus playing the game. So could everyone else if looking was all anyone wanted to do for $14.95.

Climatic music and some really quick action shots, to leave you off on a climatic cliff hanger!
That would draw attention!

Setting it to music and timing shots with the beat and flow really affect the video. If you can get the lyrics to tie into the scene somehow then it enforces this.

(I hope this is the right link, I am at work and cannot see youtube :uhoh)
I know that is not the best quality but it does show what I mean. Also trying to make sure there are no shots that hover on the large poly mountains does help too. AH has some great landscapes with great textures but you need to show them.

Some of the community made videos would have made a better advertisement.
-
Video looked all right to me :)
-
I think if I saw the video and wasn't already here I wouldn't subscribe.
To me the graphics looked outdated (which in-game I don't feel) and it lacked the excitement of the game. Overall, communication between friendlies and in-cockpit views would have done a lot more for me. To me the old video of the fighter straffing the train (which you never see in the game) was much more enticing than anything I saw here.
I hate always being the naysayer in these threads but I tell it like I see/feel it. On a positive note at least there's an effort being made.
-
There is a long term plan and this is just the start. We were not expecting everyone to like it.
We appreciate the concern, and the opinions. To have people talking about it, is not a bad thing.

May I say Skuzzy, that although I was not keen on the video, I did think that the write up was good! I am glad to finally see some real advertisement going on (Being in the UK, I don't see any of the commercials people talk about) and I applaud anything that you as the creators do to help get people into the game.
It is a great game, and I feel one thing that must now be done is for the community itself to pull itself together and start acting like adults and not a COD forum, which is what it seems like at times here. We need to start being more supportive of everyone. WE are already good, but a lot of the bickering lets it down.
I am glad there is a long term game plan and I look forward to seeing how this materialises. Again, I applaud the work that you are putting into this and I do not think any comments here should be taken so much as 'They don't like it' but more as 'it might work better if this happened'. Constructive criticism has been a big thing in all creations here, be they skins, terrains, sounds or films. We are simply trying to find ways to help you out Skuzzy

Just so you're aware, bustr, it's for all intents and purposes. I made that mistake for a long time myself!

I'm partially dyslexic. I can write "tickled pink". My wife says she has never heard(herd) :) me say it other than "pickled tink". My brain sees intensive in a literal. At least I spelled it correctly. We could be pulling our hair out over effect and affect.
-
:aok :aok :aok Looks good, should bring in more new players.
-
Any plans to do similar in other languages?
Japanese? Korean? Russki? German? Espanol?
(Or, God save us all, Finnish?)
-
I was seriously hoping that article was announcing the Next Generation of AH. Instead, it was merely advertising what has not improved in any significant way since roughly 2003. That article was essentially ten years ago. To be fair, AH has brought in new working cockpits aka IL2, new tanks and a new tank control system aka WoT, and some severely needed new skins, but the game and the atmosphere has not evolved since 2003, more or less.
-
Video looked all right to me :)
The thing that bothered me in that video was how crudely the camera was fixed during the takes. The effect was made even worse when the player jerked the stick a couple times which made the dreaded 'camera at the end of attachment' jolt which happens for example when people use helmet mounted cams that have a long attachment rod and move their head around. When the whole view tilts on and around axis quickly while having the plane dead centered it looks extremely bad (at least to me).
Some of the community made videos have made an excellent job in simulating the subtle 'floating' of airplanes in air during shots so that the camera doesn't appear 'superglued' on the 'target plane'.
-
Overall, communication between friendlies and in-cockpit views would have done a lot more for me.
Personally I think the video was not bad, but I agree it can be much better. A few things to consider for the next movie:
The point about radio chatter is a very good one! It is very cool to hear the players speaking in the background. It conveys cooperation and a social gameplay, it adds excitement.
The other valid point is the in-cockpit views. Track-IR smooth and continuous view movements look excellent in vids and add a lot to the realism feel. I don't use track-IR, but I think that the AH film format does not save them (or does it?). They'd have to be recorded live.
