They are amazing aren't they.  I got one back in 2010 when Razer first started making them, as I really missed my old IBM clicky mechanical, as the one I had been using finally quit working.  I posted about it here, and everyone except Skuzzy pretty much thought they were stupid and not worth the money, as I had predicted that in 5 years or so everyone would be using them.

Now that they are 50$ for the lower end ones, many more users will likely get them.  I can't imagine typing all day on anything else, not to mention that for gaming they are way more precise.

What is the Pros/Cons of it compared to a normal one?

Precision in gaming and even typing.

I am enjoying the Razer Ultimate Blackwidow 2013 and also have a Razer Nostramo.

the pros is that you get a REAL keyboard with a great typing feeling and hopefully a great longevity. Also there is no limit on the number of keys you can press at once, at least on mine. the cons are the price and weight.

When I was a kid computers shipped with this kind of keyboard, now probably to cut costs they include 5$ membrane ones. Also some companies like logitech market these 5$ keyboard with a few additional keys, a tiny LCD screen and sell them 120$....

I'm not snarking, but what does 'precision in gaming' mean in terms of a keyboard?  Button is up or button is down.  Is it just meaning that they're more uniform in when they click down or up, as opposed to perhaps having a mushy key or two?

The ability to press more keys at once and have them register is huge, that makes a lot of sense to me.

Wiley.

I recently upgraded everything to include a Corsair K95 mechanical keyboard.  Pure awesomesauce.  Macro's are very useful as well.   :aok

I loved my old IBM keyboard and currently have a mechanical Das keyboard, which is not as good as the IBM keyboard but much at least it has mechanical switches, which I have always preferred.

You are right.  I totally misread that.  Been up too long today, already.

I've tried many of the new ones, Razer's, Logitech's, Steel's, and several others.  While they are superior in terms of features, none of them IMO have ever bested the original IBM mechanical clickies.  As I posted a couple years ago, I was fortunate enough to find a small family owned computer shop in my hometown that had taken in a whole bunch of stuff from the local Tech collage over the years, and had a massive stock of the original IBM's, which I promptly raided and took the 6 best ones I could find.  I still have 3 left after giving away a few to people who appreciate them, and I'll keep them forever.

The Das is a nice board but dont be a bonehead like me and buy the one without the key lettering on it, at least unless you want it like that, and I have no idea why anyone would. Nor did I even know such a board was made. I was disappointed cause it seemed like a great board but i sure as hell wasnt about to do business with New Egg again after they sent me the one I didnt want.

So I bought a Black Widow. I didnt think I'd like the load click when you type but now I wouldnt want anything else. Razor is coming on strong with a bunch of hardware. They have replaced Logic Tech for me.

No one has ever made a better keyboard than that old IBM keyboard.

When I was beginning my work career I had the pleasure of using those keyboards. If I knew back then how unique they were I would have salvaged keyboards from every workstation we trashed.

I have had the one with the lettering for some time now.  The key feel is similar to the old IBM keyboard, but the play in the horizontal plane of the keys is a bit high compared to the IBM keyboard.

I've ordered one of these to check out, apparently they use the exact same key design as the original IBM, the collapsing spring thingamajig.  I'll report back once I get it and compare it to a few of my original IBM boards.  I'm very interested to see how their keys stack up to the original, as, like I've said and agree with Skuzzy, as good as the new ones are, they aren't as good as the original IBM M keyboards.  The new "cherry" switches on my Razer are very good, but it nor any of the other major brands have ever surpassed the IBM key patent.

http://www.clickykeyboards.com/

This place sells the actual IBM boards, and has a pretty good description on what years are best etc.  Since I have a bunch I don't need to buy one from them, but figured a few guys here who were looking may be interested.

are IBM keyboards using cherry switches? If yes what type? Most gaming keyboards use black switches I'd love to try every type out there

I guess cherry as a brand didn't exist in the 80's  :)

No, the old IBM M keyboards pretty much all use the buckling spring patented key design.  Like I said, I love the new keyboards from Razer, Steel, Corsair, and the other gaming companies, and I'm glad they're building them, and they're what I use for gaming most of the time due to the lit keys.  If I'm typing or writing anything longer than a BBS post, I use the IBM M keyboard, as the key's are still better, at least IMO, and by a fair margin, than the newer Cherry keys, at least for typing quickly and accurately.

One thing is for sure, once you try any mechanical, you'll not want a standard keyboard ever again.  I can max out at about 70 or so WPM on my Razer, and well into the 80's with the IBM board, with far less errors taking off score.  I don't love the PS2 connectors though, I'll say that for nothing.  If IBM was smart they would sell that buckling spring thing to another company, or build some new keyboards themselves.  Like I said, the "new" manufactured one I ordered from the first link in the last post should be interesting I hope.

And that's exactly what they did, first they sold the machines to mold the plastic and etc to lexmark who then sold them to Unicomp. Unicomp makes them brand new. I ordered mine in late April of last year and the date on it is 4/12/13 can't get much better than that... Its still heavy like the old IBM version however the version i got is not as long. Still has the keycaps that can be removed and cleaned and etc. Still built like a tank....
They come in the standard PS2 connection or in a new USB version which is the one i got. Very happy with this keyboard better than any cherry mx blue or brown keyboard that I have used. Windows key is also new.

EDIT: Just noticed you posted the link before Gman.

I'm thinking seriously about having my wife get me the Unicomp classic 104 trackball keyboard for Christmas. I'd love to have one but spending $100+ on a keyboard is kind of hard to justify. My wife is going to think I've lost my mind.  :lol

She won't when she'll hear the crackling from your room. You can justify it by being able to write her love letters 20% faster.

When im playing games I simply pop the windows key off, works very well.
Also it seems the windows key is switched with the ALT key in that picture...

Cheapest mechanical keyboard is second hand IBM from a flea market or garage sale. Reproduction models cost upwards of 75 bucks.

That's the point of my question, is there anything in the stores under 70$?

My unicomp ultra classic buckling spring was about 75$ and its the best keyboard money can buy that is new. No flashy back lighting, no "gaming modes" which somehow make you a better gamer, and its about 5lbs. But its US made and VERY sturdy. I can't count how many times this keyboard has had stuff spilled on it, just flip it over let liquid drain plug in 30 mins later and chug along. One time I had a window break in my room during a rather bad storm which caused the death of my "gaming quality razer flashy lights etc" mouse to die. The keyboard lived, not only did it live but it was still on when i came back 2 hours later lol.

EDIT: One thing you will actually notice sometimes when gaming is that this keyboard is rated for only 2 key roll over. Meaning by spec only 2 keys are going to be registered at once. however most key combos allow for 3-4 KRO but it was still an issue for some MMO games. I took it apart and added simple switching diodes between the rows on the membrane pad where the hammer strikes after a key has been pressed. Testing shows its now 6 KRO (besides function keys but meh). But 2 KRO is fine for typing and for aces high and most FPS games.

This steelseries I'm using is rated 105 keys rollover  :lol

I like it so much I was thinking to get another one for work (HP membrane keyboards are meh) but 70$ is a bit over what I'm willing to put in it, hence my question.

Key roll overs above 6 is too much really... Are you going to be pushing that many keys at once anyways? besides on USB 2.0 im sure more than 6 KRO is a buffer overload...

I made mention prior to Olds posting I had ordered one of these to try out as well.  I've had my unicomp for a little while now.

I have to agree with Olds442.  Next to the original IBM mechanical, it's easily the best, due to the buckling key patent they're using from IBM.  I've tried several other modern mechanicals, and while they are vastly superior to a regular keyboard, none of them capture that....clickness that the original IBM keybaords had, hence me grabbing so many of them when I was given a chance.  The unicomp however is IMO the equal to the IBM in terms of keyboard "feel" while typing, and can be had new for under 100$ incl shipping.  I've had no trouble playing FPS or any other game with it, and while I miss the backlit keyboard sometimes, I'm not often playing in the dark anyway.  My Razers have been sitting idle since the day I unboxed the unicomp, and will continue to do so until I probably end up giving them away to somebody local who hears my whole "mechanical" speech and doesn't know wth I'm talking about.

+2 for the Unicomp.

agreed its overkill and it wasn't the main reason I chose it. I understand they put an additional buffer in the keyboard itself.

Just got my unicomp classic 104 with the trackball tonight and I am in love! This thing is freaking awesome. By far the best keyboard I've typed on in a long time

Edit: 15 minutes into playing with the keyboard and my wife is already complaining about the "noise" it makes. You can hear the keyboard down the hall when someone is typing on it. Only regret so far is not getting it sooner.
