Very Nice HTC!!!
The video sailing through the foliage.. the bark/branches are amazing!! :O
:aok
-
Wow that looks great! Tank battles are going to be a lot more interesting!
It's great that HTC agree that the current terrain system is grossly outdated. I will gladly take this over any aircraft update. The current terrains are the thing that stands out for me when I look at AH and not in a good way.
-
:x I'm loving it!

Just don't try to take your Tiger or King Tiger through said foliage. :lol :noid

Excellent looking terrain HTC. :O
Did anyone else notice that the farm had outhouses? Finally, Midway doesn't have to use channel 200 for spewing his crap! :devil

Same here, terrain > planes.
I am impressed, and this isn't even done yet :t

Awesome .............

Is this only a graphics engine or.... existing terrains wouldn't be usable? :bolt:

Well get ready for fu**ed frame rate

It looks so pretty! Next we need updated explosions, fires, and tracers! :aok
and a 109T :D
Also, anyone else notice the draw distance? We can see trees on the mountain and that looks well beyond the 4 mile range limit that we have now. Maybe it's just me but do you think we're getting increased draw distance!?? :x
Or maybe I'm not used to seeing things from ground level as I'm too busy flying at 5,000ft. :) I'd like for the option to increase draw distance.
-
It's pretty.
I can't quite put my finger on where abouts the terrain is based.
-
You could always ask HTC to post an FPS test arena of the new terrain including all of the advanced graphics options we have now to turn on or off to see what our individual outcomes will be. I love the grass but, I have to keep it turned off along with terrain bump mapping and all of the other bumping and shadows if I want to keep my FPS in the high 50's during furballs.
-
I like it so far. Apart from the extra detail, the colour palette looks more muted and realistic. Never liked the acid green terrain we have at the moment.
I'd suspect the main hit would be on download size rather than FPS. The textures look to be much higher res than the existing ones, which is how they can get ploughed fields etc. to show up so well. So for those whose PCs can run it they may have a separately downloadable high res terrain texture pack in the same way we have a high res skin pack now. Those who have lower grade PCs could then either run the normal low res textures or turn them off as now.
-

I would assume that they are updating all the terrains, considering it's hard to use an engine when there are no maps to play on :D
Well get ready for fu**ed frame rate
I am quite sure they will give us the ability to lower the graphics down to a suitable degree so the lower quality PCs can play it.
Not really able to play now due to computer troubles
-
Looks good so far. Thanks for the teaser HTC :aok
-
Outstanding! :aok

I see roads lets hope the roads lead to more civilization terrain objects like towns and city centers so its not all wilderness :)
this is great news!

Way Cool :salute

Two Weeks!!! I can't wait!! lets get it on!!! tank heaven!!!

Great update, looking forward to what the map makers and terrain team come up with.
This is a new base, the foundation, just like the current terrain engine supports the custom stuff in scenarios, the new base will support some fantastic stuff :)
Yes, it may hit some computers, but at some point we have to accept the fact that Goodyear Tire and Rubber replaced the wagon wheel industry, and with it, came more cool toys.
-
I swear I saw a squirrel giving the middle finger as we passed through some branches. Also, anyone else notice the sheep? ;)
I like it, it looks great. I know it is very preliminary and HTC is just showcasing the terrain, but I really hope to see more open maps. Having fields of plowed dirt, or the wide open steppes of the Ost Front (few trees with gently rolling hills), more roads with actual hedgerows.
Either way, I give a big :aok to HTC for continuing to improve AH.
-
This looks like its going to be way more fun to be a tanker :x
-
Not sure if this is the best place for it,, but I'd like to suggest a new VH,,
instead of the VH,,
A motor pool,, one complex still, but a fenced in area with GV's scattered all around,, the size of 4 or 6 bomber hangers I've been thinking of a new post just for such a place,, but i thought id start here!!! still the new terrain looks awesome!!!!
-
Also, anyone else notice the sheep? Wink
:O
Missed that, going back for another look :bolt:

Fantastic HTC! A huge step forward in the part of AH (the terrain) that was most in need of an update.
-
My eight year old computer just whimpered. :p
-
Very nice. Guess I will have to pony up for a new PC build. I was just waiting for a good reason.
Looks good
-
I paused the video and moved it around while at 720p and the texture resolution and tree detail levels are orders of magnitude above the live game's trees. Also, at the end, it looked like the trees were visible at a greater distance perhaps.
-
You can hit a peanut at 30k? :rock
no he's dropping a peanut...
-
Are those shadows on the trees dynamic?
-
Are those shadows on the trees dynamic?
They looked dynamic and I can't imagine HTC doing otherwise.
I am hoping the hills cast shadows too.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure from which angle I'll go though: set a budget or buy a screamin' machine. :aok

Hi-res sheep?
-
As the video raced towards that hill in the distance I was hoping to see it up close.
Will the new terrain engine address the elevation changes between squares so they look 100% smoother?
Kids these days also want destructible terrain, will Tanks be able to blow them up and the terrain start to look like WW1 countryside after a long spawn battle?

I can't wait to see what ranger comes up with when this hits the street.

I think people who play on HiRes textures and do are going to have to re-download them. I don't like multiple hour downloads :uhoh

Dialup?
Ouch.
-
Terrain looks great my daugther will love it. She likes to hop out and wander around the towns. Will the humorous street names still exist or more added?
As to me it does look great but I really only focus on the other aircraft and when the graphics get too intense I hope to be abl to adjust them down to present levels if needed
-
Assuming there is a separate download for high res ground textures, I'd guess you would only have to download them once. When the next incremental version of the game comes along you always have to download the new high res skin pack if you use them to get that version's new rides. But there is no reason they would need to change the high res ground textures between versions unless they add new buildings etc.
-
Dialup?
Ouch.
No, Wifi Doesn't really get to this end of the house. Normally I have 2 bars.
-
HTC will mail you the game on a DVD for $5.00 if downloading it is a pain.
-
New Terrain Engine:
Wow. Just, Wow.

They are adding new buildings, at least I think so. Look at the video, I thought I saw some new buildings.

Buildings, trees and shrubs all looked 100% new. It will be very interesting to see what other things are added as this is just a preview of a work in progress.
I hope the terrain mesh resolution is increased as well.
-
Greebo are you interested in trying your hand at texturemapping the ground?
it would not be a small undertaking to simulate the land that these tanks roll on and planes fly over.
everyone knows your artistic abilities are somthing on the side of magnificent and the results of your colaborations with HTC on aircraft and vehicles have been an amazing contribution to the game.
I guess I would just be fascinated to see what AH would look like in a screenshot of one of your tank skins in a setting with texturemaps that matched your skinning style.
it could be somthing magnificent.
just 2cents from a big fan of yours :)
-
Looks very nice. :aok I suspect many old AH'ers will come back to the game.
-
I didn't make myself clear on my last post. With the high res skin pack you have to download it every time a new version comes out with updated or added aircraft and GVs to get the textures for the new rides. If you download the high res terrain texture pack for version 2.4 (or V3.0?) you should in theory not have to download it again when version 2.5 arrives a few months after that. Unless that is version 2.5 has still more terrain improvements, for instance more buildings that require more new textures.
Thank you Citabria but I wouldn't have a clue about designing terrain textures as good as those. If HTC were going to get help from the player base for that I'd expect them to be asking someone like Ranger. Besides, I'm kind of busy with other stuff for the next version..... :D

Just wait till this is introduced, I predict much screaming and tears from the I wanted more graphics crowd as their uber PCs grind to halt trying to run it.

I'm willing to bet HTC is taking in to consideration the older systems as they develop new terrains and features for AH. Give them the benefit of the doubt. I bet HTC also knows that some people are not going to be able to continue to play on antiquated systems no matter how hard they try and allow for those outdated systems. All in all, it is we the players need to keep pace with the industry. I think HTC has done well over the years of keeping us "in play".
-
This will, I expect, pretty much be the death knell of being able to play AH on my existing PC. I will need to scrounge up the money to build a new one somehow.
-
It looks so pretty! Next we need updated explosions, fires, and tracers! :aok
no. Updated terrain features that effect or in relation to ground movement. Gvs should be able to move best over roads and suffer penalties of varying degrees when traveling over open ground or sand as well as differing sounds for each. Imagine hearing the snap crackle and pop of a tank moving through a wooded area or the clank clank clank when traveling over a road
-
Looks very promising!

You may be onto something, as there is mention that it is in early development. :aok

What a cool idea. It would require an optional config file, like the defset file for eto/pto, so that the terrain builder could specify different sounds if he replaced a farm tile with a forest or desert sand tile.

I just got a new system for school, and it can run current AH reasonably well at 37fps, and now I'm gonna be back to crappy framerates :(.
But...

You running high graphics?
Pretty high, but not quite maxed.
-
Then yes, your 8 year old system runs games better than my ultrabook, purchased with an emphasis on school work. The only way this thing is "for" gaming is that I got it with a dedicated graphics card instead of a disk drive.
And I would have done that anyway, since I'm going to be doing a lot of CAD for my engineering classes.

Hang on, a typo? We are used to typos from Hitech! I remember before the spellchecker was implemented on the BBS! I think Google was tempted to make a Hitech Translator part of it's code! :lol :P

Heck, most of the oldtimers learned to read/speak Hitecheas a long time ago. Let the the noobs put a little effort into it.
:lol
-
I am really hoping more then anything else we get long over due snow and desert maps in MA. :old:
-
Not to take away from the hard work which is greatly appreciated HT, but what happened to the clouds you guys were working on? They get dropped for terrain or was it to difficult to employ? Just curious.

Looks pretty impressive from what I could gather from the "preview". How about some screenshots?
In before HTC goes under because they updated their graphics engine.

It's been seen in FSO on occasions.. They look GREAT, btw.. but I think a few folks took some serious performance hits.. :(

Preview of the new terrain looks great :aok

And the most important thing: no concrete trees and bushes? Dynamic terrain, ie some obstacles can be taken down, like trees, farmhouses etc?

I wouldn't count on that, though even I'm a little hopeful. But maybe we'll have some water depth, so that we can get some seaplanes in (H6K :D). I don't think our current water could handle a seaplane. You'll either get stuck or crash. :headscratch:
-
volron adds a very good point as the water is part of the terrain will it enable depth for Submarines??
-
For real!! depth in water would be fantastic if possible.
So very happy AH is working on terrain graphics!!! I feel like this one of if not the biggest obstacle that is detouring new players from joining the game.
Im Proud of you HTC yay!
-
realistic splashing for ditching would be :x
-

The water has a depth. We do have LVTs and also Pt boats + cv groups. To answer your question the submarine implementation is quite a bit of hard work and complex work... I would doubt it will be implemented for a few years. There is to many other things that have a higher demand from the community.
I hope we will eventually see them.. Maybe in AH3
Sooner be able to shoot a HE round at a tree and have it blown over. Same with the farm buildings. Like BF4.
Great job HTC looks great.
:salute
-
It's time to play again the game! ;)
-
Looks really nice. I wonder if this means new airfields and vehicle bases too?
-
Only problem is that the terrain looks very monotone. Needs more colours/shades.

Wouldn't at all mind if AH ended up looking something like this. Yes, its monochromatic, but there's still beauty in it.

Not saying I want it to look exactly like that. Second picture is more representative, and only that style of animation.
