Anyone on here play guitar? Just trying to open up a forum about the subject.
I've been playing for a little over twenty years. I've owned quite a few and currently have three Epiphones (a black Les Paul Standard, an SG, and a Thunderbird,) a Fender Tele, a Peavey Reactor (Tele copy) a Martin copy and a Fender electric mandolin.
I play metal, hard rock, classic rock, and blues.
-
I've played several epiphones and I don't like them at all. They just feel cheaply made. Maybe that's because my first real guitar that I bought for myself is a 2008 Gibson Les Paul Studio model. I also have a fender blacktop tele and a Gretsch G5120

Ibanez ART200 here.
Anything by Tool - Adam Jones is :rock
Also a big Jerry Cantrell fan.

Cant play a single one of them. :D

I just started playing this summer, bought myself a decent acoustic that was on sale. I like playing a lot, and I have been playing Sax for about 10 years now and Ukulele for a bit over a year. Hopefully Santa has an electric or a new Ukulele planned for me :D
-
Been playing for almost 15 years (late starter) - play in a local band, we play country, new country, classic, blues, pretty much whatever takes our fancy lol......
Branch, I've got a 82 epiphone les paul that will pretty much give any gibson les paul a good run for its money, were you closer, you'd be more than welcome to play it. Yeah, I know, big claim, but had plenty of people with gibson les paul's comment and try to buy it from me lol........
Agree with the newer ones not feeling right tho.
Waiting for waffle and skyrock to drop in now - know both of them play.

Been playing about 20 years now. I have a Gibson J-50 dreadnaught, Fender Tele, and Loar LH-309 (Gibson 125 copy).

Can barely play but I've been designing unusual devices for guitar since I did a working model of "the sustainer" in 1981 and spent nearly a year of days off doing patent searches and trying to patent it.
Even shopped the idea around to companies like fernandes and Floyd rose.
Started collecting Kramers after giving away a "holy grail" Kramer focus 1000 with banana headstock and original Floyd rose.
If you ever see an old Kramer (not the new reissues) with a "non-pointy headstock" like the one pictured below, at a garage sale, think twice before passing it up.

Sammy playing a baretta with a focus "hockey stick" neck and eddie playing a strat with a telecaster neck.
Apparently, eddie used to pull all nighters at the Kramer factory and party down with the employees while trying different neck/body combinations.
Here's eddie breaking every rule in guitar building as Floyd rose looks on....horrified.
That guitar is now displayed at the hard rock café in Orlando.

I'm an acoustic guy myself. I've got an old nylon string Fender, two Ovations, a Taylor (this is the one I use for most of my shows), and a one-of-a-kind prototype arch-top by a company that was called RJP Technologies; they went belly-up many years ago, but it is a beautiful guitar. All but the Fender have pick-ups. You can see the guitar in the following picture.

Nice hollowbody, that's primarily what I use at shows. Mine has a p90 at the neck position though.
-
yeah, I play...
I have 2 ESPs from back in the day (late 80's/early 90s, ESP couldn't date it) eclipse and a custom build one from '99 as well as a Guild accustic and a child sized guitar called the 'shredder' which I installed emg-81 actives in 10 years ago as a joke.

Here are my babies, wish I had more time to play them though :(

I don't play the guitar, but I do play the bass.
The 5 string bass to be specific. I'll usually play metal or hard rock, sometimes i'll play some classics like Queen or Aerosmith and if i'm feeling it i'll get funky with some STP or Pearl Jam.
These are my babies, the one on the left is my newest one - An ESP Ltd. B55 edition with a 34" scale. The one on the right is my very first one and it's a Samick Artist Series, sounds like crap compared to my ESP but I love it to death. If my house was burning down i'd run back in to grab both of them.

Good lookin Sunn setup. Got a couple of 6-10's myself but not in near as pretty shape. As for me I've been playin' (poorly) just about forever. Got a big mess of gear but my preference is Gibson. I will say that the one Epi I own plays nice. It's just not nearly as robust a guitar in terms of hardware. Bur from what I've heard Gibson hasn't been getting a lot of praise QC wise recently so maybe they're a smart choice.

The Germans really outdid themselves with the workmanship & materials with that guitar. An arch top with mother of pearl completely covering it. They machined each piece to the contours of the guitar & each piece of mother of pear will only fit in that location. I had a Luther look it over who hand builds guitars & was simply amazed with how Duesenberg built the entire guitar for the price they sell them for.

I too play in a local band. I used to play metal with my brother on drums just for fun back in the late 80s, and didnt play agin much till mid 2000s. I think grunge took the love for it out of me. Then I got together with 3 other guys a few years back and started playing again. Mostly old stuff now, classic rock from the 60,70s. I have a couple guitars, my BC Rich Warlock shape with EMG in it, sits alone today as it needs a lot of work.
The one I play in the band is a Schecter, cant remember what it is off hand, C1 classic I think, I have a Washburn acoustic I rarely touch. The one I play the most is my wife's Yamaha acoustic she bought 30 years ago. Gotta constantly tune it, but its a dreadnought body and I love the tone. I play it everynight.
I dont know much about guitars, I just like playing them.

I've been looking at the Mike Campbell models too. They're different guitars altogether; not just different looking. That's what I like about them. Unfortunately, I don't live in an area where I can try one out. I was also looking at Greco- Zemaitis guitars, too. It seems that they're not available anymore in the States for whatever reason. Not like I can go out tomorrow and just pick one up anyway. lol

I feel the same way about Gibson too. I went to Sam Ash a while back and tried a three pickup Les Paul Classic with every intention of buying it. When I played it the set up was horrible, the pick ups sounded weak, and the neck felt like it would snap if I tried to put heavier strings on it. I've played LP Classics before and was satisfied with them. I decided to save my money (good thing I did, my car needed repairs a week later.)
Another time, I went with my wife to a Guitar Center and tried two LP Standards. One sounded like garbage and the other was one of the best sounding and playing ones I have tried. Tried an inexpensive SG Classic and was trying to figure out how to muster the cash to get one.
It seems around the late 90's is when Gibson's QC started to go downhill.
-
I always end up liking a cheap guitar with a neck like a baseball bat more than a high line axe.
I'm sure that will change if I run into the right guitar but I'm holding out spending big bucks until I can afford a "combat guiter" or "fgn" which is fujigen's own brand name.
Very sweet guitars made in japan and if you look closely, you will find many gibsons, fenders, Ibanez, Yamaha, roland, and a ton of other names all come off the same fujigen assembly line.
They have become very sought after now that many big names have switched manufacturing to Indonesia, china, and korea.

Seems like that's always been sort of the deal with Gibbys. Except for my 'Paul the others are Norlin vintage and they're just as....distinctive as the one I bought a few years ago. I went through 'bout a dozen LP's along with a couple of SG's and a Firebird that time. If I hadn't decided to look at a plan B finish I would have gone home empty handed. The last one I checked out was so much nicer than everything else I'd looked at I have to credit the initial setup along with the Hand of God. Maybe that's the problem. Internet buys and minimum wage GC/SamAsh "techs". A good setup will mask a thousand sins. Granted you'll have some that are lighter, have a cool grain, or just subjectively "feel" nicer but they should. Or not. My fist LP ('78 standard) was a heavy, toneless beast. Sold it to a guy who'd checked it out at a jam and hounded me the whole school year to sell it. Dude probably still has it. I took the money and got a 335 which I've had ever since.
-
In my opinion, the majority of the stuff you pick up at GC or Sam Ash to 'test' has been abused and sounds like crap. Old strings, bad intonation, truss rods needing adjusting, some needing fret jobs...on both electrics and acoustics.
-
I've been known to bend a string or two.

Guitars are like joysticks :old:
You need a tool kit to get them right :old:
Which is not a bad thing :old:
Guy at work pick up acoustic from a second hand shop a old epiphone, looked like poo :)
Flippen thing was awesome :)

A lot of younger (playing time, not age) players don't realize the value of having a properly set up and intonated instrument. Makes all the difference in the world. Pretty much any thing right off the wall is going to need to be restrung, have the neck, action, and intonation set at the very least. Depending on build quality it could also need fret work, new nut, wiring etc. to get it really ready to go.
Another trap people fall into is buying based only on the brand name. More guitars than you would think are products of ghost building. A good deal of "Brand name" guitars are built overseas and just quickly QC'd once they hit stateside.
Find something with a neck that feels comfortable to your hand. Most of the rest of it can be fixed/tweaked by a good luthier, or at least someone who knows how to do a proper set up.
Guitars in my current lineup...
80s ESP Horizon Custom
80s ESP M1 Custom
91 ESP M1 Graffiti
90s American Strat (for studio work)
90s Ovation 1869 Custom Legend
90s Ovation Celebrity
90s Peavey Foundation S
Probably adding a 12 string acoustic and 5 string bass in 2014.

I have never seen anything closer to the truth than this. I spent at least 3 days just looking at different basses to find out what one had good tone, felt right and fit my criteria. Looks or brand name won't matter, how it sounds and plays will.
Jigsaw,
As far as a recommendation goes, i'd definitely buy an ESP as your next bass, I have the B55 Ltd Edition and it sounds great. The strings are practically tuned right out of the box and its really nice on sliding. The strings hang low to the frets and are easy to push down on, barely any effort is required.
On top of that I ordered mine off Amazon and got a free 2 year warranty with it.
-
Skorpx1, thanks for the intel. The 55 and 105 were on my shortlist. Just wish I could find someone who had them in stock so I could check them out first. Some of the one's I've been able to find so far were like trying to play the fat end of a baseball bat.

Good guitars are pretty hard to find... The big names seem to be churning out crap now days. I love gibsons and have owned several, but I won't play one made after 1980 due to the huge drop in quality when they stopped making them in michigan.

I've been following them for some time now. The thing I noticed is that their website hasn't had any activity in some time. Plus, their dealers' stocks are running out and some have dropped the line altogether. I've heard rumors that they've either gone to a special order only deal here in the States, or they discontinued them completely.

Yup! The Samick factory builds guitars for most guitar companies that are made in Asia. Even American companies will hire luthiers to build guitars for celebrity clientele.

The one I got off of Amazon is pretty thin on the neck, in the picture the neck seems somewhat large but it's only about an inch wide, if that. Also with that picture you can see that the strings hang off of the fretboard by just a sliver. If I were you i'd just get if from Amazon, it's a good deal and you might still be able to get that free 2 year warranty. Also, one quick question, what is the price on those B55/105's you were looking at?

Been seeing them for 249/299 respectively. I like the P/J config on the 55 more than the dual "block" thing on the 105.
I'd most likely pick it up from a local shop although I think they'd have to order it. That would at least give me a chance to make sure the neck/frets weren't jacked before buying it, and it would help out the local small store. I'm a big fan of helping keep the mom and pop stores open.
Worse case scenario as long as the neck/frets aren't totally fubar... throw a new bridge on, toss in a set of EMGs...
-
I've gotten to like ESP's and LTD's more and more over the years. The QC seems to be the most consistent out of most of the makers out there, discounting higher- end makers. I'm looking at getting one of the first run Phoenix II models with the ebony fretboard. Doesn't matter if it's ESP (for the right price) or LTD. I have a thing for reverse Firebirds, but don't want just another Gibson... unless it's an original one pickup from the 60's. That would be cool!
-
Mojo, ESP was supposed to be coming out with a line in between the LTD and ESP (LTD elite?), but I haven't heard anything since the initial announcement. They also announced last November that they will be opening a plant in North Hollywood. I'm curious to see what comes out of it. I can't remember the last time I saw an ESP on the wall of a store. Lucky around here if you can even spot a LTD or two.
If you really like the neck on the Firebird, Ed Roman (R.I.P.) used to have a really cool mod for Les Pauls that his shop might still be able to do. There are videos around of him taking a small battle axe to a LP and destroyed everything but the neck, then building a whole new LP around it. One of his techs tried to one up him by using a .357 to take a body apart.

Started out drumming as a kid and switched to guitar about 15 years ago in my mid 30's. Goal was to learn 3 instruments before I croaked, drums, guitar and keyboards. Not a great guitar player but good enough to write and record my own stuff. Never played in a band but it's on my bucket list provided I can find some middle aged guys like myself who want to get together once a week and jam. I recently read Keith Richard's book and started to get into open tunings which opened up a whole new world on guitar for me. I remember back in the early 70's, sitting in the back seat of my old man's Oldsmobile and tapping my foot to the Stones Sticky Fingers album that was blasting over the eight-track. Still my favorite Stones album to this day. Last week on Christmas Eve me and my cousin jammed to some old Kiss songs on our acoustic guitars. Cold Gin, Strutter and Hard Luck Woman. Can't beat those nursery rhyme Kiss lyrics. "My heaters broke I'm so tired. I need some fuel to build a fire." Lol! Not exactly poetry but after a few run throughs of the songs I felt like donning a pair of seven inch heels and spitting blood. Keep on rockin'!

Ed was right about some stuff in his rants against people counterfeiting guitars but he would turn around and do the same thing.
He only had an issue with people other than himself doing shady stuff.

My local music store has a wall of ESP and LTD guitars including LTD Elite series.

ESP really limited what they're making now. I have a catalog from 2010 or 2011 and was impressed with their range at the time. I'm not sure what to make of the Elite line. It reminds me of the Elitist Epiphone line a while back. To me, I'd rather pay a hundred bucks more and get an ESP rather than a very slightly cheaper LTD. I'm usually not brand- conscious, but it would be a deciding factor for me. Especially true considering they have really good quality across their line.
I know all about Ed Roman RIP. He said a lot of things about manufacturers that upset many people. I've contacted him and even sent him some material for one of his articles, and never got the infamous "Ed Roman treatment." His Pagan would probably be one I would have built when I have the money.
