Unless a nuke pops, anywhere, by anyone.

The 'end of the Cold War' was a false sense of comfort to many.

Having said that, I've seen those either eager for or waiting for Armageddon (my ex being one). You'd think that would make the top of the list when it comes to sin. Never-mind that some of these types are getting elected to high public office. I reckon some of the 'hallelujahs' would end up spitting out bitter disappointment that they either weren't raptured, after-all, or that they weren't close enough to ground zero to avoid a slower, miserable end of their mortal days. Which is why I don't run with that giddy bit o' stupid.

Nah. It's not Nukes or Zombies.

A viral pandemic is the most likely cause for our demise. At least to an extent.

I wouldn't say 'most likely.' It has potential. So does a strike from a large astral body (though the odds are slim).

The global nuclear arsenal, however, is still large and on more of a hair trigger than some seem willing to consider, much less admit. Of course, marginalizing the threat is an option for stress control.  (I wager a rogue nuke set off by extremists may be the first domino.) :D

P.S. I find the N. Korea estimate rather spurious.

P.P.S. And zombies? Marginalizing sarcasm, I see.  ;)

well from a certain source that I find to be very reliable....and not because I listen to what others have said about it, but by reading it myself.....

the world is reserved for fire.

... the world is reserved for fire.

Presumption from the book of Genesis, chapter nine.

"And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by
the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth."

However, I agree that a global flood falls low on the list of likeliness.

The book of Revelation describes:

8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

In 'spite' of that, yeah, may be fire's turn. NOT that I'm eager with anticipation. It would be
nice to cross it off the list (nuclear fire, that is - but, pragmatically speaking, I don't see Pandora's
box shutting without global catastrophe involved.)

So, survivors of the human race estimate? Any other planets remotely environmentally friendly
to humans for us to infest?

This is why I play online games.  ;)

Much less then it used to be. While the ICBMs theoretically could be launched in a few minutes there are far more verification assets in place and far better ones which makes the chances for an accidental war much less. Both we and the Russians have learned  from previous near accidental wars and I dont think neither wants another.

SLBMs take at least an hour to spin up and launch and the boat has to clear its immediate sea area first and come to launch depth. Bombers would have to be loaded with special weapons and take so long for that, and to get to the enemy targets, the chances are about zero for a accidental war from the Bomber fleet.

In 1991 old man Bush unilaterally stepped back the ICBM alert status, took the nuclear cruise missiles from their bases and ships and put them in storage, while halting work on next Gen ones. He recalled, stopped development, and destroyed our tactical nuclear weapons. And most of all he pulled the nukes off of the Bomber fleet and put them in storage, while taking the Bombers off the alert pads. The Russians followed suit and did the same while meanwhile our mutual START treaty kept reducing the overall size of our arsenals.

Simply put, we both have far less nukes on far less delivery systems, on a much lower alert status, in far fewer places, and with much better verification checks in place. In my day we had 12,000 nuclear weapons deployed on 3 different classes of ICBMs, many squadrons of B-52s on hot pads,  theater Pershing-lls and cruise missiles, tactical weapons and fighter bombers, "Boomer" boats. And the entire shebang was on a hair trigger. Now we have about 1688 that can be launched in short order and they are on a far lower alert status ; The Russians about the same. Most of out weapons are stored away from their delivery systems.

The chances of an accidental nuclear war are far larger due to terrorist attack or a war between emerging nuclear powers. India and Pakistan for example. And that would not be a species killer.

The problem with biblical and other ancient predictions is that they're generally mistaken for what they are. Bible talks about local happenings as global simply because b.c. people lacked any method to perceive a global world. For them the world was about a weeks horse back ride worth :D

The great biblical curses for example match exactly a rare phenomenon which happens sometimes in the Nile region (water turns red, not from blood but from algae), fish die, frogs escape the river and die, insects swarm the dead bodies of fish/frogs... chain of events of the natural phenomenon in question matches exactly the biblical curses and it happens globally if you happen to be 200 b.c. person living at Nile area :D

ehhemm...I think when the creator said he flooded the world...he knew how large of an area it was... ;)

and the curses you are referring to, only happened in those areas not world wide.....

science proves the Bibles' words...now I am not saying what "religion" says...but what it actually says.

Yep the flood which 'covered the world' is estimated to be the rupture which joined the black sea with the mediterranean. A local catastrophic flood. Most importantly evidence suggests that word of mouth based tales such as the flood resulting from the creation of the black sea are largely integrated to the stories of the Bible.

The word of the Bible can not and should not be taken literally. If you did you would end up in jail in a matter of days.

it most certainly should be taking literal..(except when it is spoken as a parable)..but one has to read it without "his" own ideas....and read it for what the Creator is saying.

and not just read one line and think thats it<----(thats man kinds biggest problem).......also understand not every word in translated over properly ..

IE "Thou shall not kill" should read "Thou shall not Murder"....big difference in those two sentences.

Ah there you go. If you twist the words kill and murder youre already not taking the bible literally. It seems you have read the Bible really little if you can say with a straight face that it is still valid today.

If you would take the Bible literally you should for example avoid any contact with any menstruating women, perform several crimes on daily basis, discriminate etc. The Bible is literally filled with ancient superstition and inconsistencies. It was an excellent survival guide and etiquette 2000+ years ago but for todays standards its just dated. About like trying to take advice from war time manuals on todays world. Car battery empty? Take the hand crank and crank the car lol.

the fact that when it gets translated some words are not exactly what the message is...does no mean the message should not be taken literal.  .

as far as the "old laws" the one you mentioned and ALL the other laws are not ours to follow.

can you tell me the 10 commandments are not perfectly suited to today?

just because the "world" thinks something does not mean it is correct.

I can tell that if you wish I can quote 10 or more places from the old testament which are totally against modern morale or logic. You see there is a huge difference in saying 'Bible has good teachings' and 'Bible has to be taken literally'. Nobody can argue with the first statement and the second statement can and will be shot down very easily.

But this is the wrong time to argue about this kind of stuff. I wish you, Ink, and other fellow AHers a warm, trouble free and Merry Christmas!
