I made the investment and am enjoying it so far, but I have a couple of questions:
1. I'm having difficulty seeing straight up. I think the sensors are "bottoming out", i.e., the camera can't see them when I tilt my head up past a certain point. Is there a way to correct this?
2. Am I right in assuming that the rear views in the F4F, F4U and other birds with rear cockpit issues will be worse than what they are while using a hat switch?
-
Be sure you have selected the correct "tracking device" reflectors or Track Clip Pro.
I set my camera so that the three dots are below the center line. I look up more than I look down.
The F-4 rear views are a bit difficult, but with proper adjustment you can make it work.
-
Sounds like you need to turn the sensitivity up a little for looking up. TrackIR is a great piece of hardware for even more immersion in the game.
Here's a thread of my write up for TrackIR that might help. http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,351335.0.html

Muzzy, here is my somewhat dated profile and some instructions to help you get started. http://www.mediafire.com/download/s6c8ftqbhfhlnq1/TIR+5+Profile.zip
The Fugitive has a nice collection of Track IR profiles here. http://www.mediafire.com/download/y2flvoev2gzebxb/Profiles.zip
He also has a nice write up for it as well. http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,329017.0.html
Lots of info For TrackIR on the BBS. You just have to find it.
TIR is a very personal piece of equipment. Lots of variables. The size of your monitor, how far back you sit from it, your field of view settings etc.
It took me at least a month before I got it the way I like it. You do not need to use all 6 axises. I personally shut of the roll axis
and use very little of the zoom axis.
-
You need to increase axis response so you're viewing straight up before you tilt your head too much.
Map a button to easily recenter your view. When you have a difficult view you can look in the opposite direction, recenter, and then get the difficult view easily without strain. For example if you want to view the cockpit console next to your left leg, look up to the right, recenter TIR, then with your head in the relaxed look forward position you'll be viewing down and left. Recenter to regain forward view. If you are straining your neck looking up to track a bandit in a fight look down, recenter TIR, then view the bandit with less strain, recenter to normal view as needed.
-
Take advantage of the graphic displays that TrackIr provides in their software. I watch the moving heads and use the 3d grid to see how far my head and views move.
I will watch the 3d head as an example on the "X" axis. I want my head to have minimum movement when using the gun sight but when I lean to the right to look back as an example, I want the 3d head to move full right.
The "Speed slider" has a direct effect on movement if set too low.
The F4U view takes some getting use too because of that canopy cap over your head. I spent some time in the F4U1A as a fighter in Furballs to got use to the view. The F4U1A is now one of my favorite planes.
-
I managed to correct the "up" problem more or less, but looking out the back of my Wildcat is still not as good as with the hat switch. I think it's because with the hat/set views, you can move forward and then look behind you, whereas you can't with Track IR.
-
Muzzy make sure you turn on Options->Preferences->View Options->TrackIR Object Relative Move in AcesHigh.
That makes looking around headrests a lot easier.

You can do that with TIR too. Sounds like you may need to adjust your profile.

I have only been using mine for a month but it is awesome, I must have made 20 profiles before I hit the comfy zone for me, still got some minor tweaking to do mostly the "Y" & "Z" axis, but it's almost there.
I have my yaw & pitch axises set in a very steep "V" for roll, "Y" & "Z" they are more of a shallow "V" all have a sizable dead zone, I like it to snap back to the gun sight quickly and I am very fidgety in my seat so it helps me. speed is at .7 and 20 on the smooth, I only have to turn my head 15 deg to look back and up 180 deg, I dont use the "Mirror setting for pitch" my pitch up side is steep wile pitch down is more of a flat line, I dont need to look down much quickly . Use the graph and the "6DOF" box to see how far you are turning your head and how much it moves in game, Load the "Pano" from time to time see see how it looks in a cockpit, it's not an exact AH cockpit but you will get a general idea of how it's going to look.
Definitely play around with different set ups one of the best tips was to set up one axis at a time, this tip helped me big time.

I'd like to check out your setup and add it to the group file if you don't mind. Let me know.

I have had two TIR, the original clip and I upgraded to the TIR5 Tracker Pro. I like the product even with it's Achilles Heel (that adjustable arm on the ProClip is a known weak point that NaturalPoint is re-engineering, at least according to NaturalPoint). I've never changed the profile, I've always used the equipment right out of the box with no issues except for the need to control background lighting. Everything worked as advertised, right out of the box.
As for the issue with the ProClip and the likelihood that until NaturalPoint does completely re-design and re-engineer that adjustable arm, it will remain a point of failure. My fix was to set the ProClip in a position that works best and used airplane glue to fix that joint in place, any adjustment that I need to make I do by moving the camera/receiver thingy that sits on my monitor. Prior to that fix I replaced the ProClip (a $35.00 part) twice. Last time I complained to the sales staff at NaturalPoint and they assured me that the problem was known and being addressed. They refunded the price of my last replacement and sent me a new replacement free of charge. Now that's a company that I'll continue to do business with.

Muzzy make sure you turn on Options->Preferences->View Options->TrackIR Object Relative Move in AcesHigh.
That makes looking around headrests a lot easier.
I might owe you a beer.

I was gonna buy TrakcIR, after a small search I founded that you can build it by yourself only for 15buck (freetrack)...
now i am waiting for next gen. oculus rift

My pro clip broke as well. They were quick to send me another. You can tell by the software, their product and service, these people care.

I take it that you already own all the components necessary and all the tools? If you go out to the web site and watch the how too videos the tools and components alone run far more than 15bucks. and I take it that you don't plan to pay a fee for the software, not even a contribution that they request. Good luck with your build, perhaps you can take some photos of the finished product.

if you referring to Freetrack, yep I build one its working fine and cost me only 3 leds, 1 resistor and 9 wolt battery. (here is small video showing the Freetrack in game: http://www.mediafire.com/watch/3ii6u15xk16rdh4/freetrack.mp4)
If you are referring the oculus, I am not of course buying the developers kit (not that I can not utilize it, but because i don't have time).
They working on a commercial version with 6dod. etc... so I am waiting for that one.
-
Well I can see the advantages of the system, it's still far from perfect, at least for me. I find that I still can't reliably see straight up, and the views to the rear are a lot worse than with the hat switch. I've tried messing with the x y z settings, but nothing seems to fix the problem. What's worse, when I'm trying to look around in the middle of a fight, the view often focuses in a totally useless position.
-
Muzzy, how about this out-of-the-box solution: Map one button for looking straight up and another to center the view?
-
Muzzy, make sure that you have mapped your TIR center and pause buttons to unused AH buttons.
Weird things happen if you don't.
You may also want to try this old driver out. It is the last driver that will let you look past 180 degrees.
I have used this with XP 32 bit and Win 7 64 Bit. Works fine in AH.

I did not think you could look past 180deg in any direction in game

I think it better to assume as a starting point that the interested party owns none of the tools needed or components necessary and wouldn't know a pigtail splice if their life depended on it. From that starting point the price tag is in the range of $60.00 bucks, not 15. because "bad boys rape our young girls but violet gives willingly", remember that one from Basic electronics 101.

lol man did you read my previous reply... freetrack costs tops 15bucks , 3 leds , 1 resistor 1 9wolt battery ..

here check this video, I used much cheaper stuff like regular red leds, lots of cartoon , super glue no switch and pipette instead of hanger...

...and he is saying that a soldering iron cost $15, solder costs another $3, the parts $15, the hardware to build it on (plastic strips, what ever)$20 and video camera $20. Freetrack isn't really all that "free". And yes I know all about it as I built one and posted my findings years ago. http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,223422.0.html

here :
how you build it less than 15$s (I know it does not look very cool but as long as its cheap and works fine i really dont care.) As far as the camera goes , I am using freetrack with the build in camera on my laptop and i had no problems at all. So i did not paid anything extra for the camera.

But as some time, you bought or was given all the components, someone paid for them. It looks like you use your headset to mount it on, so you bought your headset. You owned a or bowered a soldering iron and solder that someone paid for. You bought a computer with a built in camera, or perhaps you just bowered that to, but someone paid money for it. You didn't just build a freetrack for $15.00, somewhere along the line someone, maybe not you but someone paid for all the tools and components. That list of components the cost is more than $15.00 bucks.

if you think like that... dont even bother cooking food at home to safe money... because probably all the kitchen equipment you gonna use already costs way too much... you better eat outside all the time.
-
You can tell by the software [... skip ...] these people care.
You can tell by their software and service that they dodn't care much. There are bugs and feature requests on their board hanging for years without being addressed.
F.e. notoriuos "make difference between sticks" request.
Although I'm enjoying using trackir5 I wouldn't count on their support too much.

Their support provided me with replacement hardware at no additional cost to me and reimbursement on an additional unit that I had purchased along the way. My experience has been very positive to date. I only use it to play AH and I'm not looking for anything other then what it already does. I have no idea what "F.e. notorious "make difference between sticks" request" means so I can't comment on that.

Your mixing apples and oranges, but perhaps English is not your first langue perhaps instead of saying "I was gonna buy TrakcIR, after a small search I founded that you can build it by yourself only for 15buck (freetrack)... " what you should have said is: That after a search on the internet I found that I could build it by myself for only 15 bucks (freetrack). That would be your experience and your actual cost, but my point was and still is, that someone else that not owned all the components needed was going to spend more than 15 bucks. And yes, someone just starting off setting up a house hold for the first time, buying all the pots and pans and dishware for cooking that first meal is going to spend , on a price per meal basis. far more to produce that first meal than any other they ever cook.

Well after further experimentation I'm finding that the system works great for planes with bubble canopies, but for the FM2, my ride of choice, it is somewhat limited. The best rear view you can get out of that bird is when you pull away from the seat and raise the view as high as it can go. While it's physically possible to do with Track IR, (lean forward, look behind and sit up as high as you can), it is not as quick as the instant view you get with a hat switch. Also, if you try to duplicate the view by moving your body around, you can end up far out of position when you turn back, and you have to recenter the view. All of this makes it less than optimal for my beloved Wildcat. I've simply decided to disable the system when I go into combat in an FM2, but I still use it for birds that have better views. Unless someone knows of a way to remedy this, I'm afraid it's going to have to be my methodology from now on.

Simply map a button to look straight back. Keeping it pressed down you can then look around just like you'd normally do for looking at the front sector.

The trackir offers just as good of a view as the hat switch. Something is not set right. Here is a good test.
Try a P38 in off line practice and just sit on the runway. The canopy has a bar that runs over your head then down the sides. Set your head positions so when you look left or right down the wing, you are looking just in front of the bar, save your head position. Now look up. The bar should be straight over your head. The canopy supports in the P38 offer you a good gauge of how your Trackir is working.
What is your speed setting slider set on?

The view Keys still function even if TIR is running. You could still use that key you have programmed for that perfect instant view that you feel you need.

When I use the view key with TIR on it defaults to the standard view, not the modified one I have programmed.

Just reset it and push F10

You need to pause TIR first, then adjust your view with the page up/down or arrow keys, F10 to save.

Muzzy make sure you turn on Options->Preferences->View Options->TrackIR Object Relative Move in AcesHigh.
That makes looking around headrests a lot easier.
I'm struggling with looking straight up too. I haven't figured this one out but I did finally get comfortable with my rear views.
I had a similar initial experience with looking back until I made the change Auger suggests in his post. It made a huge difference. I also center TrackIR with my head down slightly. When I sit upright the view is from a higher seat vantage point. When I turn my head and look aft the view is at the highest point. Another thing I've found is the head tilt is quite handy for looking around the seat as opposed to looking over the seat. I fly the F6F and my rear view with TrackIR is much better. It's not crystal clear like a Spit, Pony, or a late model Jug but it's better :). I'm not certain if this will work in the hog.

I've noticed that the hat clip actually works better than the pro clip. I was using my pro clip till my head set hit the floor and broke the pro clip. I then started using my hat clip until I could get another pro clip and found that rear views were much better than with the pro clip. I have yet to replace it because the hat clip seems to work much better. Problems looking up still happen, but the fix is just to move the hat clip forward on my head.
