Cherokee 6. You dump the RV?

Remember to lift with your legs.

Hmm, Hershey Bar wing, fixed gear, fixed prop. 6 seater? Always figured you to be a Mooney kind of guy. Good luck.

Room for the family. :D

I've heard good things about the 260-hp PA-32s. Our Saratoga was a few years younger and a 300, but you'll love the room (especially after the RV!) and can relax quite a bit about weight and balance considerations. Not familiar with your GPS; the autopilot is Oldman-friendly, though, very easy to use.
Just the thing for a man with a young family!

Yeah, but then the wing would block the sky!
Good airplane. Popular up here in the bush with the air taxi guys.
How much time on it?

AF: 7631 :Eng 1103.
Paint and interior about 6 years old. No corrosion, not even on the tip gas tank lid rims.
Engine could use about a grand of TLC, Spark wires, motor mounts, Manifold pressure gauge hose ect.

Will it be able to do Trans-Atlantic flights? At least it seems to have enough space for a couple of men and their computers plus some *cough* extra fuel... :airplane: :joystick:

Hitech - does it have anti-ice boots? And I think the service ceiling is 25'000 ft with a 18'000ft cruise. Does it have a pressurized cabin or do you do the simple oxygen line trick?

Fly safe Hitech. Always remember, a good pilot is always learning.

Older aeroplanes are like older cars. Something will go wrong, all the time. Welcome to the world of maintenance costs. Remember to hug your wife early and often!
Might want to have someone look at the electric fuel pump when they fix the magneto. Had the same sequence happen to me. Not that there's any logical reason, but hey, who knows?

Hitech I was curious, did you build your -8? I'm looking into RV-4's at the moment; I'd love an -8 but the -4 I've seen so far has a more attainable cost for me.

Hitech I was curious, did you build your -8? I'm looking into RV-4's at the moment; I'd love an -8 but the -4 I've seen so far has a more attainable cost for me.
No, I bought it with about 100 hours on it. 8 Was my only choice, I can't fit in any of the other RV's. In fact I had a good line on a 1956 g35 bonanza at a good price, but I can not fit in those either.
Whats your budget, and what type of flying are you going to do in the plane?
HiTech
-
Ah that's something good to bring up....I'm 6'1" so I need to see if I'll fit in a -4. I've heard they are a close fit.
My budget cap would probably be about $45,000. I would use it to commute to and from work. Right now I commute via "plane pool" with a fellow employee in their Lancair 320. It's the perfect plane for it. It's about a 25 minute flight each way. In the end with split costs of fuel, its about 100 bucks a week. Not too shabby. Of course that doesn't count all the other operational expenditures but since it's experimental its easier on the maintenance costs. But Lancair's, even the 230, aren't cheap to come by. Ultimately I want something fast, economical, and fun. I'd love to buy a Pitts S-1, it's easily attainable and high on the fun scale and I could race it in Reno, but low on the economical scale and in between in fast the fast scale. So I've had quite a few people talk about the RV-4. In the starting research I've done so far, it's pretty good all around in speed, economics, and fun. I'm not Mr. Moneybags quite yet so I've got to be a realist and look for the best combination that will fit me best.

In 9 years of owning my 182 the only maintenance cancelled fight was due to a mag…evil little things. There was the time a big rock flew up and crushed the leading edge of the stab, but that wasn't really the airplanes fault --- I blamed the wife. :devil
Achilles heel on the B-24 was prop governors, on the B-17 is was damp ignition harnesses (POP..BAM BAM….POP)
-
It may not be the mag at all.
The mags are killed by grounding them and any short to ground or a bad switch can cause a "bad mag".
Definately something to check.
-
Pensley,
An RV-4 is TIGHT. Unless you're a rail @ 6'1 I don't think you'll enjoy the -4 all that much for cross country work. If you want to go fast for a commute on the cheap, I recommend something like a Thorp also pretty small but has a little more elbow room. If you want an inexpensive biplane, a Starduster Too can't be beat.
-
@pensley
Just out of curiosity, wouldn't Motor Glider be cheaper for day-to-day operation?
Or it is more restricted in terms of operation in comparison to RV-8 like planes.

We did all that trouble shooting.
But I am almost sure the capacitor failed , taking out the points on the last hop. Our radios were absolutely terrible on the flight, so much so I had to communicate some things with Indent with ATC. It sounded like electrical interference. About 20 miles out the radios suddenly cleared up. This would be symptomatic of arcing on the points (failed capacitor), followed by points being burnt up.

You can find 6's and 7's in that price range. You should have no problem fitting in a 6 or 7, 4 may be very close on head room. If you plan on passengers you may wish to go with the 6/7. If you fit in a 4, and not planing on many passengers, it is the more fun flying plane of the group.

It's funny that you mention a Thorp. There's a guy at my home airport building one and I was looking it over and he was giving me some performance numbers on it and you are quite right, it would be a good thing for me to do some research on them. As the guy told me, it's a fast airplane like the RV's, it's just on 60's technology.

It would indeed be a cheaper day to day alternative, but it would be too prohibitive in cost in purchasing for me, as well as it would just be difficult logistically in parking at my work airport. Plus the airspace is very congested, so I would be more apt to having something a bit more nimble. But a pretty awesome idea! A motor glider would most definitely be the most calming commute. :)

I've also been told that the -4 is one of the most fun. It's a good all around airplane in that, it will take you somewhere (though maybe not in the most comfortable fashion), it's economical, and you can roll it upside down once in a while if you like. There's one at my home airport that I'm going to try and get a flight in just to see how it fits. But I'm definitely not opposed to keeping my options open. I've got time and I believe the right airplane will come along at the right price, and for the right mission for me, I've just got to keep my eyes and ears open.
-
Good for you. Life is short and WTF are we working our entire lives for if not to have a little slice of dream? Enjoy.

If you want to go fast and be REALLY cheap, look into a Tailwind. Old tech but probably the most mph per dollar of any aircraft flying. Small planes but Steve Wittman was a pretty tall guy from what I understand.

Do look hard at those Bendix dual magnetos that are "dual" but are a single drive and point of failure. That's proven to be an issue for some of the freight haulers that operate the Six/Lance/Etc.

I know a guy who has one of those things. They weigh 42 pounds, you're laying almost flat to the ground when on the ground and when I climbed in it I was instantly uncomfortable with the thing...which ain't all that easy. I was sizing it up with a Cessna 180 and while the gear is wide enough and it's not really short coupled I wasn't interested in flying the thing.

By single point, I assume your talking about a drive gear that they sit on opposite sides of?
I pulled them both for an over haul. At least Alternator and vacuum pump are very low time (50 hours or so).
Also does anyone know for sure, when switching to the L on the mag test with a key switch, is that grounding the left or right mag?
HiTech
-
Yeah. They're a common housing as you know and the gear and shaft has failed in the past. I have a buddy who can give you a more eloquent explanation than I can as he has experienced it as have some other Lance freight dogs. I've never actually had one apart but it's stuck with me as something that deserves it's prescribed maintenance.

Right.

Right.
I've heard of that happening as a secondary effect to one mag coming apart and dropping crap into the motor. Never heard of it as the primary cause before. Either way would not be fun.

He knows two other people that landed off airport when the single driveshaft failed. Totally negating the benefit of a dual ignition system. There are STC'd true independent magneto systems for the airplane. Worth looking into.
I can't speak to that particular company's maintenance practices but it's something I wouldn't skimp on :)
Enjoy the family truckster it's quite a good airplane.

:airplane: Right is correct! When both is on, neither is grounded, but when you move to L or R, which ever is not engaged by the switch is grounded. I would also recommend that when checking mags, go from both to left, then back to both, then to right. If you go from both to left, then to right and then back to both, you will get an incorrect reading on the right mag because of uneven fuel burn when one is off and one is on. If you go back to both, from left, before going to right, both setting will eliminate the excess fuel vapor, prior to testing right mag.

IIRC -- If you took and passed your amateur radio licence you could use that callsign as your plane and radio ID....but my remembering the regs on that is hazy after all these years.
-
Memories . . . . . I took my flight training for my PPL in a Cherokee 140 back in the 1970's. After I got my license, I usually flew Cessna Skyhawks because everybody wanted to be where they could look down from their seats.

Good stuff HT, I've got about 120 hours in the PA32-300. They are a real workhorse, and a heck of a hauler. The one I flew had a 1532 pound useful load and a -260 should actually have a little more. I would recommend flying it at the extreme edge of the envelope atleast once (with sandbags or something as ballast) before you load it up with family and friends to go on a trip. It's definitely a different animal when it's loaded up to gross.

Does his six have the dual-mag setup? The one I flew didn't, but I'm not familiar with all of them.... I know some of the Saratogas do as does my Mooney....had one of my mags fail the last time I flew it down to Texas (only about 5 hours after they had both been overhauled)
the bad mag had been chucking teeth into the good mag. I wish I had some pictures of it, apparently it was pretty bad. I know a guy that lost both mags in his Mooney in IMC with a 500' OVC. The ATC vectored him to where he thought a very small grass strip was (it wasnt on his scope) and he broke out right on glideslope and landed.

At first, I thought you bought the building. :D

Doesn't appear to be so. Most folks see L and R on the key switch and assume 2 independent magnetos when that's not the case. It is a left and a right magneto but they're not a true dual setup with a common driveshaft as a single point of failure.
An STCd dual setup is a worthwhile investment IMO

I agree wholeheartedly. If I was planning on keeping the Mooney I would do such an upgrade. It's big $$$$ because you need to change out the accessory case, but completely worth it for your family.

Cool, you're in the Cherok (she-rock) club now. Does the PA-32 have the same "innovative" brake fluid reservoir as the smaller 28? (I think someone at piper had a father-in-law who was a used oil can salesman)
I bet that Korean expansion idea is starting to look as good as a TSIO-550 in that baby, huh, maybe? :aok :rock
PS - I vote no wheelpans, cheroks look better w/o them.

I'm 6'5", Never noted any headroom issue in a Cherokee 4, but where it gets you (or me) is the legs. Not all 4's though, I think the Archers... maybe and a few other variants I've actually been comfortably surprised to fly and operate from the right seat a handful of times (and the left seater in this case wasn't any shorter than you, and thought of this particular 28 as his one of the most comfortable ac).
HiTech
Yup, a dual magneto is a single unit mounted to the engine, it houses a single primary winding (driven by a single shaft) that revolves between two independent secondary windings (and thus how they "pass" the dual ignition rule). Regular single mags and a single unit mounted to the engine with one primary and one secondary winding each, and to comply with the FAA you need two of those.
Dual:

Single:

Confirm with Golfer, you're grounding the primary winding in a magneto to safety (cold) it, so "L" on the ignition switch grounds the right mag, "R" position ground the left mag, off grounds both. This is why the P-lead is so important but not easy to spot a problem with, it is the "P"rimary to ground. No P-lead = no ground = hot magneto = hot engine.
Visually inspect P-lead and connections whenever you're near it and/or are working on an engine (much like when in or near the mag switch in the cockpit, give the P-lead a check when under the cowl). And when disconnecting, disconnect the P-lead last and connect it first, before any leads/harness.
If you have some Bendix magnetos, get these filters you can install on the p-leads (if you don't already), they really help radio quality/issues for relatively cheap (this trick won't work on slicks though).
I still have a bruise on my right knee from Hitech doing his control check in that Cherokee. Being tall sucks.
Next time he comes in to land (or TO) pop the seat rail lock and slide the seat on the rails back past the last lock, gives ya a few more inches if really needed.
Prepare yourself after he's gotten comfortable with it, expect nose high wheelies on most your landing rollouts.

I'm sorry I should have been more clear on what I was talking about. I was referring to the Vans RV-4. I fit just fine in Piper products. Sorry about the confusion.

Well now I feel silly predicting Hitech would be moving up to a pink Cessna. :lol
My younger brother used to have a Piper Warrior. Nice airplane.

Could be mags and I'd also recommend to try changing the spark plugs (I would go with tempests)
After I swapped the plugs in my roommates flybaby pretty much all of his radio interference went away.

Wouldn't finding sparkers from a Tempest be difficult and expensive? :bolt:

Could be poor grounding. There are things in engines that can create electrical noisem (RFI), just like car and truck engines.

Perhaps a new sound pack?

Brought this home yesterday. Coming over the numbers at half the normal speed is a different sensation and I very rarely almost crashed. It was a good day!
I'll simply refer to myself as the caretaker of the airplane. It's 20 years older than I am and I'm looking forward to actually getting comfortable in the airplane.

Beautiful Bonaza Golfer, nice panel :aok
-
Bring it back, its missing part of the tail!
Does the V tail feel different when flying?
Nice plane.
-
It's been about 10 years since I'd flown a Bonanza of any flavor and never a V tail. Yesterday was windy, gusty, cloudy, rainy and generally sucky so I didn't really get a good feel for how it's different from something else just to make some suggestions for what I'd like it to do which it seemed to without anything unusual.
Getting slowed down to 70 knots on final was a bit of a chore overcoming the "WE'RE GONNA FALL OUT OF THE SKY!!!!" feeling when 140+ is pretty normal.
I can say the first half hour or so I hated it. I wasn't comfortable and I didn't like the feel of the airplane mostly because it was new and we were going flying in it. Oh boy...
The rest of the day included a few approaches and some time going over the equipment to make sure it did what it was supposed to. Or I should say seeing what it did and wondering if that was what it was supposed to. ;)
I'm only looking after it and flying it 11 months of the year while the rightful owner is out of the country. While I will treat it like it's my own it's not mine to claim as owner. It's a better deal this way and much less expensive than buying a well equipped Bonanza on my own. This one is worth more than what I owe on my house!
-
I was looking at the vtails, but I don't fit in them.
Last week end I took the RV up again, after about 1 month only in the PA-32 , man what a joy to be in a fun airplane again, felt like I was putting my gloves on , vs climbing into an SUV.

...a bit of a chore overcoming the "WE'RE GONNA FALL OUT OF THE SKY!!!!" feeling when 140+ is pretty normal...
LOL! I know the feeling. I'd been out for 2 1/2 years flying the B-24 and B-17 (heavy controls, slow response) and had gone home and jumped into a 206 to fly a load of jumpers. That first takeoff was ugly as I s-turned down the runway from over controlling on the rudder. And then 55-60 on final was pretty scary the first couple of times.

Yeah the elevator sensitivity is going to take some adjustments. Not getting to altitude is going to take some adjustments and patience. The "scale" of the altimeter on the Aspen display is only 200' for a reason and it takes for-ev-er to get to where you want to be. The manual trim wheel is going to take some practice for smoothness. The last manual trim wheel I used was in Citations and it was light, easy to use and had good geometry to make adjustments with configuration changes. I shoved the nose down a little with a little too eager bite of trim yesterday on the first go. It also took a looooong time to get from the top to the bottom of an ILS and a couple GPS approaches (This is my first WAAS airplane...it's nice!) which threw off the chrono-calibration of my brain a little.
All in all I like the airplane but after my first day I've decided it needs electric trim and a new autopilot. :)

Nice ride Golfer. I like how they shoehorned that EFD in there.

What, you can't fly inverted?

Why yes I can. :-)

:airplane: Thorp is not a comfortable airplane to fly, the RV-4 -6 -8 is a much better airplane. I am 6'3" and 230lb and fit in a RV-4 just fine. Of course my RV-6 feels alot more roomy because it is side by side seating. I am not predjudiced in any way I live 6 miles from Van's aircraft. :x

I do detect a little RV bias there. As far as an RV being a better plane, I completely agree. But is to 2 to 3+ times as good as a Thorp? The price of an RV says it is but the performance sure doesn't. Of course I'm not 6'3" so roominess isn't as much of an issue for me.

Well it looks like it's going to be a Pitts after all. I'll be picking it up the end of June or beginning of July. It's gonna be a fun flight bringing it back to southern California from Texas, five or six stops and all. :)

You really ought to go to experience it! You've got to go at least once in your lifetime. It's such an experience. And I'm not sure that it's going to last forever, so I highly suggest checking it out. I think you'd have a blast. I crewed on a team the last two years but I'll be participating this year.
Check it out here and see what you think.
