I haven't done a skin in ages
France had some second hand American aircrafts, usually coming online very tired to be assigned mostly to ground missions.

Here's my take.

Looks pretty good so far, but you might want to tone down the clouding effect on the paint job. I'm not really seeing that present in the photo.
-
I like it. It will be nice to get another French skin in AH. :aok
-
Also, I'm not sure if it's the angles, though it doesn't look like it: the roundel that you are using looks oblong, instead of round.

I agree

they are for sure oblong :aok
needs more paint chipping/weathering...

Motion blur?

Motion blur?
No, they're talking about the texture, weathering of the paint. It is way overdone.

And I am asking if a motion blur would soften it....

yes it would, but it would help to back off on the opacity

Indeed. I use about 8% for my skins, this seems to be in the 15 to 20% range.

I actually kind of like the way the top paint looks, as for the bottom it doesn't look right. I'll probably motion blur it to have a 'streaky look'. You guys have to understand that neglected second beaten to crap is exactly what the French were mostly left with. I'm not talking only about scratches, but look at the paint/dirt on a few I scaned from my book. That's why I'm going for. The roundels are round, they do look weird in those pics, maybe it's the angle or my screen resolution, to be investigated.
At any rate, I appreciate the feedback and the pointers pointers  I'll keep working on the paint fading dirt accumulation to try to represent the abuse of day to day ground attack missions on an already tired airframe.

personally I love the beat up war weary look.....thats the only way I would do a skin....I really dont like the look at a nice right off the assembly line look to a skin.
but your paint looks too evenly splotched all across the board....and there is not enough paint chipping off...(I see none)
I am guessing you are using a plasma cloud....
I would do a few different layers of "dirt" with plasma clouds....using different modes with minimal opacity...
I would not use a motion blur(just MO)....I add a transparent layer then I would select the areas I want the dirt... and add plasma clouds....desaturate the color and drop opacity...you can duplicate that layer and reverse colors....again changing the opacity/mode.... or just create a few different layers to build upon the dirt layer....(selecting a color and deleting that from the plasma clouds and then adding a drop shadow...or emboss....very soft opacity....experiment for that right look...for sun fading and paint wearing..and then chipping...each will show a different effect...
not sure how you do the paint chipping....but I will create a BMF for the whole plane just like it would look without paint...allowing for different sheets of metal...and then having that layer below the paint layer...then just erasing the paint layers along the panel lines...canopy seams..wing roots....ECT ECT
exposing the bare metal layer below.
not sure if you have seen any of my skins....this is a P40E skin I have ingame...I used a couple different layers to build the dirt layer...you can see how it is not "even" across the surface....giving a more realistic look....

I am not trying to say I know better or insult ya in any way....I hope you don't take it that way.... :salute

Hell no INK, I'm thankfull people are sharing their point of view and opening my mind. I'll gather the bits and pieces I like and ultimately create my own thing ... which some will love and some will hate. This skin as no paint chip so far, but the technique you describe is the one I used when I did this one. Sadly it was 8 years ago I lost the template :cry

Looking at your P40 ink, reminds me, why are your skins out of focus and blurry?

photobucket :headscratch:

In game, the desert P40 and the PonyB are two that are most noticeable.

you mean the fact that they don't look like they came from the factory all nice and new and shiny... :headscratch:
style of doing it?

No, he means that the paint itself is blurry. Like the insignias and markings especially. This is very apparent on the Pony. I haven't noticed it on the P-40.
-
Nice skin Frenchy. The dirt wash does look a bit too obviously a software applied effect. I would like to suggest adding a second layer done in a similar way but using slightly different size and/or colours. Then reduce the opacity of each layer by half to get the same overall level of dirt. The two layers should blend together to make the overall effect a lot more random.
Perhaps you could add a shadow effect behind the cowling too.

I tried to make it look like the paint is faded...the insignia faded IE not crisp and clean.....
obviously the paint wont be crisp.....after a bit of time in service...
the lines on the nose art would not be perfectly clean.....freshly done..... let alone after some wear and tear....
maybe one day I will be able to get the results up to your standards.
edit
sorry that sounded snippy
I dont like the look of a fresh out of factory paint job......
I tried to get the exact opposite look of the normal skins seen ingame....
obviously they are not perfect.

Ah, okay. :aok

It was actually made the made you describe, with two layers one 'darker' one 'lighter', blured and "opacitated". I think I put so much of it that I ended up killing the ramdom look :lol I'm experimenting new stuff, thank you for the input. :aok
-
nvm ... still working on it.

Id love to fly a French skinned Jug......Looking good Frenchy :aok

Can't wait to see it finished Frenchy!

I don't really know how to post in full res out of Photobucket. I took your comments into consideration and here's a version I would feel feel comfortable posting. And BTW, how do I post? Which file do I include? P47D111.bmp, the Material/bump txt files, and the P47D111.txt?
Also my roundels were screewed because of my screen resolution :lol, so I redid them, do they look round now on your guy's computer?

WTG Frenchy! I haven't been able to find records of aerial victories. I know these guys and 57th were mostly ground attack- any 47 aces from that unit?

The roundels are good Frenchy. When you say post, do you mean submit to HTC? If so, you on submit the files that you've changed.
The upper camoflauge weathering still seems a little strong, I cant put my finger on it, I'll leave the more knowledgeable to comment, but you're getting close.
-
Yep. As said above. Just a little stark. Gotta' blend your initial effort with this one.
I am in no way criticizing. I think it is one heck of a good effort and you'll get it down flawlessly... This is hard to do. Just keep it up.
I think I preferred the first rendition. I think you need a motion blur on the original skin to make it look like the pictures...
-
The panel lines seem like they may be a bit heavy, too.
