If the USA took soccer more seriously they would be unbeatable. So I suppose the rest of us should be grateful they don't.

As for England winning the world cup? Dream on! They have the same chance as Ireland, as in none and we aren't even good enough to go to Brazil.

If the U.S. were fielding guys the likes of Allen Iverson, A-Rod, or Sidney Crosby their would be a better chance for a world cup.. But dollars apparently are the ruling substance in the U.S.. They will never win a World Cup until they change that structure..

It's not about money.  Let's review:

1.  Chicks dig 510 ft bombs
2.  Chicks dig the post pattern for 6
3.  Chicks dig the 5 hole from 30 feet
4.  Chicks dig 95 mph fastball on the outside corner for strike 3
5.  Chicks dig the pick-6
6.  Chicks dig natural double plays
7.  Chicks dig sacks
8.  Chicks dig free-throw line slam dunks
9.  Chicks dig the triple reverse
10.  Chicks dig charging the mound

Questions?

There is no more difficult task in all of sports than to hit a baseball moving 90+ mph that will end up 22 inches from your peen.  Well, except a hammer-curveball that starts 1 foot behind your head and ends up 16 inches from your peen.

Most humans can't even stand in the batters box but I guarantee you I can run around chasing a ball.  Now,  I have no idea what to do with it when I get there or how many times I'll vomit while chasing it.

wow changeup, not enough quality fighting in the other threads?  who cares about football (that is soccer for you changeup) after all it is the most watched sport in the world.

that's better than baseball who claims to have world championships even though only two countries participate.  FIFA only has about 209 countries that participate in their "world" championship.  oh yeah and the finals will be watched by more people than well baseball teams could only dream.

And that really sums up what the world thinks of america too.

Have a look outside your borders (country not county) and you might enjoy what you see.

Here in Aus, NRL (National Rugby League) & AFL (Australian Football League) are the 2 most popular ball games. Football (soccer) has overtaken Rugby in the last 5 years to sit at number 3. I dont count cricket in this list as Test Matches can last 5 days and as such you cannot really compare it to the others which last around 80-90 mins.

Baseball, Basketball, American Football & Nascar are all shown here on different channels, and have had marketing campaigns, but have never really caught on. In-fact, Basketball which was growing in the 90s has now, shrunk and many local NBL teams have folded.

well considering that in most countries the national sport wasnt "created" in that country, then perhaps they do look outside their borders once in a while.

I lived in Toronto for 14 years and became a huge Blue Jays fan.  Then we won the World Series, twice...in a row.  After that it dawned on me what a complete waste of time it was and how actually boring the game is.

My collection of cards was given away and so were the sticker books a buddy of mine and I did every year from 1987 to 1993.

Yeah they do the same with Football as well, Superbowl winners refer to themselves as world champions.  It's all due to America's inferiority complex, they have to over compensate like the 5 year old kid who's dad lets him win at checkers jumping around proclaiming himself champion of the universe.   ;) :P :D

And that would be so much more effective as a point if it was actually true.  There are world players and there is the peanut gallery.  It's hard for you, I understand, but that doesn't make it any less true.  Just enjoy the ride bro.  There is nothing impressive on the world stage coming out of Europe...there is no positive or negative world influence in Europe, lol.  It's just riding along....

The game's brilliance and entertainment is in the details and nuances.  The deception and pitch by pitch strategy.  The situations and the level of difficulty to perform in those situations.  If you really understood the game, you would never have said what you said...that's how I know I don't need to know you to know you don't understand the game.  Nothing wrong with that.  That's how most people are.

Ya know, I was half expecting you to say "I know you are, but what am I?"

I was close.

Anyway.  Yes, Cricket is probably the closest thing to baseball thats played professionally.  I'm sure it has some of the same nuances and details.  However, the main difference is that the ball has to bounce before reaching the batsman....and the target area is a lot lower and smaller (the wicket)....if the ball hits the wicket hard enough to knock the bails off, he's out.....if the batsman just stands in front of the wicket and it hits his leg, he's out.  Cricket has bunts, we just call it a defensive stroke though.

Edited for accuracy.

Baseball is a fun sport.. Football is a fun sport.. Nascar is a fun sport.. They are all fun sports.. That is the reality of it.. The World Cup is just the one coming up now and pits many of the worlds best players against eachother.. but you can't say say its the only worthwhile sport.. Baseball WAS a fun sport, I loved it.  Now it bores me.  ME.  Just me.

Coaching tee ball and Little League probably didn't help.  But then, I know squat about the game apparently.

Your point is well taken, but frankly this board is so predicatable whenever the World Cup comes up....lots of posts about how football (soccer) is boring etc.  WHen baseball is declared boring though, for example, people take it so personally.  I find it funny, as if their patriotism is being questioned or something.

How do you think the USA soccer team will fair this summer?  Discuss.

Personally, I hope they do well.  Anything not in the script makes the game more interesting (cos lets face it, soccer needs all the help it can get).

The whole point of soccer is it's simplicity, you don't need lots of equipment, you don't need a lot of space, you don't need hours of training, don't need to be 6'9" and weigh 300 pounds and you don't have to wear lots of armour to protect you from other players and fast moving balls. You don't need ice, nets or sticks. You don't need a whole day to play it and you don't need to be super fit.

All you need is two people, a ball, it doesn't even have to be a real ball, a tolerably clear piece of ground, it can be sandy or stony or concrete. That's the beauty of soccer, anybody can play it anywhere. It's easy to play but difficult to play well. That's why it's huge around the world even now in America.

I'm not even a particular fan of soccer but I can see it's virtues. When it's played well it's an art form. My nephew has just turned eighteen and has played for Ireland at junior level and has some big English clubs sniffing around. The skills he demonstrates are amazing. My own seven year son has just started playing soccer. I encouraged it just to get him playing sport and working in a team. He loves it and it turns out he's not bad at it. He's also quite an aggressive player which surprised me.

Soccer is the people's game even though at the higher end it's all about silly money. Which hopefully my nephew will see some of! :aok

They don't have the talent, they don't have a good home-grown system.. its just not there..  I think they will finish behind Ghana and Germany.. it's a toss up with Portugal..  But I don't think they'll get out of the group stage..  The last time they met Ghana they got beat 2-1 in 2010 WC knockout stage..  Will see if things have improved or gone belly up again..

I understand it I just find it boring now.

I'm sorry that this bothers you so much.

It bothers me zero.  I enjoy the game and I enjoy explaining it.   I always find it curious that everyone seeks first to be understood before they seek to understand, me included.

:aok

Thank you for making my point from an earlier post.

Fame/women/stardom will be the reason the US doesn't advance?  What the hell?  Those are among the three stupidest reasons I could have thought of.  Or are you talking about some other nation?

Tell ya what, let's have a try at staying on topic for a change.

How do you think the USA soccer team will fair this summer?  Discuss.

Personally, I hope they do well.  Anything not in the script makes the game more interesting (cos lets face it, soccer needs all the help it can get).

I'm betting poorly because, as has been pointed out, most Americans don't really care about soccer. Golf may very well be bigger here.

Sorry, but it's almost like asking how the UK is going to do in the world series. Only its just barely an applicable questions instead of non applicable.

I have actually been suprised at how well the US plays the game given the lack of attention it receives.

I do think they will come last in their Group though.

That's not completely true or fair. Soccer is gaining in popularity in the US very rapidly. One of the big problems for American soccer right now is that Americans ARE so bad for it, and even as soccer is getting more popular viewership of MLS games has actually decreased. Americans are just watching more European soccer. (Soccer has actually surpassed ice hockey as of 2013 in the 'what is your favorite sport?' poll conducted by gallup, making it the fourth most popular American sport)
The World Cup final was a surprisingly big deal in the US four years ago, and it seems that a lot of people think that this may be a breakthrough year for the popularity of the sport in the US. Then again I think people have been saying that for quite a long time.

I guess baseball fans get so rabid over soccer's popularity is that soccer getting popular could signal baseball finally dropping off the cliff and slipping into irrelevance, considering its 30 year trend of declining popularity. {/cheap dig}

Might be a cheap dig but it is the truth. The only time the ballparks are full of people is for the 'World Series. The MLS stadiums are quit full.

Yes and the truth is the U.S. has been playing well as of late.. --> they got bounced in the round of 16 last cup.. the cup before that they were last in their group and did not advance.. they did however, score a third  place finish in 1930.. so quite fair to say the team is improving.. lol

Much of the empty seats are because MLB plays 162 games per regular season.  81 home games means you don't have to go to every game.  Seat prices have gone up a little but you can still watch a great baseball game from good seats for the price of a movie, chili dogs not included.

How many MLS games are there per season?  How many league games are there in England per season?

Don't hesitate to call on me when you need baseball economics or statistics explained to you.  I'm always willing to help! Lol

Edit:  Manchester United played 5 games in April, lol.  Your stadiums HAVE to be full to make it work.  The Texas Rangers played 6 games last week with an average crowd of 41,000.

That line actually surprised me, would not have thought that.
But on the other hand, it's still at only 4%.. leagues away from basketball (12%), baseball (14%) and football(39%)

The fine print is that the actual amount of soccer fans is still relatively small.

The later polls show that among all sports fans questioned, only ~20% consider themselves soccer fans, compared to around one third for basketball, half for baseball and two thirds for football. (although hockey still only sits at 22%)

Granted this is still pretty significant, and the trend is definitely strongly upward. One-in-five Americans is definitely a significant figure, and is certainly not 'no one'. And by as wide a margin it is in fourth place, it's still there. And in any context that you include hockey (which is a lot/most), you really have to include soccer at this point.

I would have thought hockey was much more popular, but that may be regional (I'm from Pennsylvania and currently living in Pittsburgh, and I think the Penguins are doing the best out of any of the sports teams in the city right now?)

Also, I'd bet if these polls had some demographic information you'd see that soccer is much more popular among younger populations. I know when I was in high school there was a strong Premier League and European Champions league following. I would say it's about equally as popular among people I know now, probably a bit more so.

I can't say I know anyone who follows MLS though

sure they dont over pay players in soccer by millions of dollars like they do in baseball.

semp
Soccer has teams paying other teams Millions just to buy certain players, and that doesn't even include the contracts for the players themselves.

I have watched the women's national team and quite honestly.. they play friggin awesome.. the men's team on the other hand is outclassed physically and mentally..
Please don't even compare the Women's team to the Men's team. The USMNT U-17's beat the USWNT (the one that won the Olympic Gold and 2nd place in the World Cup) by 8-2 after the U-17 team took out most of their starters.

How do you think the USA soccer team will fair this summer?  Discuss.

I'll always be cheering and yelling for them, but after the completely lackluster performance last night (I was at the game 1st row behind the goal) we need something to really click in the next two weeks.

I don't see how folks can crap on pretty much any sport though, unless it's basketball :neener: (seriously, Basketball, NBA especially is unbearable)

Sorry if I am a bit late to this discussion, but I'd like to chime in. I LOVE soccer, but I didn't grow up that way. I grew up in rural NC, where I slept, breathed, ate, drank, and screwed baseball. All of it, every day, every second, every year. AAU World Series Champions, 7 of my starting 9 in AAU are pro's now, including Wil Myers who is starting RF for Tampa Bay Rays. I know my baseball and I love it. I have been offered by several local high schools to teach and coach at a Junior Varsity or Varsity level. I have been a Braves fan since I took my first breath. I remember all the division championships, the 95 Series, and the horrible late 2000's. Oh yea, and the "Infield Fly" Wildcard Playoff BS with St. Louis. Every second I have spent around baseball has been a joy.

I also love college basketball. I played in high school and I live in NC, so Duke-UNC rivalry is premiere. I am a Duke fan btw. I watch every Duke basketball game, every year. I remember JJ, McRoberts, Langdon, Battier, Parks, Williams, Boozer, Brand, Magette, Dheng, and Irving. NBA is boring to me, but that's me.

The Carolina Panthers were founded in 1995. I have been a Panthers fan since Day 1. I recall the Collins days, Fred lane getting shot, Wesley Walls, Sam Mills, Kevin Greene, woeful QB years of Peete, Buerlein, and Delhomme. We have been to 1 Super Bowl and it was one of the greatest American football games I have ever seen. I cried for 2 hours when we lost. We haven't been since. I watch every game.

My point is that I love all of these sports. Sure, I could sit here with you and tell you my favorites and why. But, the fact is, they are all great. Some folks don't like baseball, I can understand why. I don't watch all 162 Braves games. I can say that I watch 50 a year, usually 3-5 at Turner field in Atlanta. Basketball requires a certain set of gifts. Football requires strength, stamina, skill, and finesse. Baseball requires excellent coordination, stamina, strategy, understanding, chemistry, and in some cases assumption. These are the things that make these sports great. What makes soccer great is it's simplicity.

The fact is, football is played all over the world. We Americans usually do not grow up watching or playing football. We play baseball, American football, and basketball. In some places hockey. But, football is the greatest sport and it is not arguable. It isn't because I say it is or because of the money, women, fame, etc. It is the greatest because it is easy, cheap, and fun. It requires skills and discipline that most sports do not require. It is played all over the world. And once every four years, the world comes together to play this wonderful game of football. This year it is in Brasil. I hope and truly wish that all of you that dislike, hate, or think poorly of football will watch your native country. Even if it is just one game. Watch your native country and pull for your country to win as if your patriotism actually were in question. Somewhere deep inside you, you will feel it. That urge to want your country to win, the need for victory, the appreciation for what your'e watching, the popularity of this wonderful game, the simplicity of this crazy overpaid nancy sport, the love and admiration of football. Watch it with us.

At present there are currently an estimated 3.5 to 4 Billion people who watch or play soccer regularly. With the FIFA World Cup registering the HIGHEST ratings of any sporting event in the world including the Olympics. In other words, HALF of the entire planets population are soccer fans.

The United States is the only nation in the developed world that soccer is not the dominant sport. All of Europe and South America is soccer. Ironically Australia is the only other nation in which Soccer is not the most popular sport. (I am Australian and a fanatical Arsenal FC fan)

As a Gridiron player (relatively new to the game) I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan (don't make fun of me). And an Aggies fan. That sport is fun too.

But in all honesty, Soccer or football as it should universally be called. Is king. And rightly so.

81 home games bro.  Champions league Europe drew 19M.  MLB drew 49M.  Soccer has to fill stadiums to make it work economically.  Baseball is less expensive to watch and there are more opportunities to watch.

Reasonable argument, my issue is that Soccer is filled with primadonna's that are worried about hurting their hairstyles, golf is not a sport, neither is bowls, bowling, curling, snooker or darts. i will never understand how someone can be a fanatical fan of a place they have no connection with, other than liking the strip, or they saw the guys win one time and thought they would leap at the band wagon.

At any rate, I believe that the United States will fair poorly but much better than is predicted. I do not see a Knockout Stage in their future, only because of the 4 they are the worst. It is a real shame, because 2 or 3 of the groups are quite poor.

For example, Group E: Switzerland, Ecuador, France and Honduras. This group is very close to toss-up. I believe Switzerland will win this group, as for the 2nd place spot, I have no clue. If the United States were in this group, I believe they would have a legitimate chance of winning the group.

Then there is Group C: Colombia, Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan. Japan is NOT the worst team in this group, but then who is? All of these national teams in Group C are mediocre, as is the United States. If the US were in this group, another legitimate chance would be in their possession.

Finally, Group H: Belgium, Algeria, Russia and South Korea. Per FIFA, Belgium is the best team in this group. You may not think so, but look at the roster: Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard, Courtois between the sticks, Lukaku in the front with Dembele. This is a solid squad, but then we look at the other 3. Russia is not the powerhouse of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Shirokov will not make it easy to beat the Russians, but still not nearly as strong as most people believe. Algeria? Fairly good midfield, poor defense and a shady attack. Bentaleb and Taider will keep the Algerians afloat but I see no knockout stage. Then South Korea, the US could easily handle the Koreans. So again we see another group that could see the Americans moving forward.

Sadly this is not the case. The Americans have been paired with a Semi-final favorite, 2 of them. Ghana doesn't allow the United States to beat them, ever. Most of Ghana's starting 11 play in the MLS, so they know the US very well. It will be a tough World Cup for the United States, but I will enjoy watching and I hope some of you burn 90 minutes watching your country.

It'll be all the more magical if the US manages to advance.  I don't think any of the teams are so far ahead that its impossible for the US to win or tie any of the games they play in their group.  Two ties and one win and its almost impossible to not advance.  Writing them off after the US has shown marked improvement every four years for a long while now is silly.  I'll watch every game.

I'll be extraordinarily happy if there's just one more moment 1/5th as good as this one, which I was lucky enough to have watched in a large crowd:

I watched that in the Purdue Memorial student union in a large crowd just like in that video after my calculus class ended.  It was the nearest TV I knew would be tuned to the game and I knew I didn't have the extra five minutes get home to watch the ending, because I was watching the game during class over the shoulder of another student, who was streaming it on his laptop.  I double-hand overhead high-fived a half dozen people that just happened to be standing next to me, and that I never met before or after that .5 seconds of excitement and elation.  After that experience, I'll never again believe anyone who says the US doesn't care about soccer or the World Cup.

Don't you think the US National Team is tired of hearing how they don't have a chance, no one believes in them, Group Of Death, always lose to Ghana, don't have their leader (Donovan), will finish last in their group?  They will be out there more motivated than ever before, with more talent than ever before, with a coach that understands his team better than any coach before.  They can advance. What's more, they will advance. And when they do, no one will want to be matched up against them in the knockout stage.

Perdweeb your post has nearly made me weep a tear of joy.   I shall raise the USA a glass when they venture into the lions den and I know they will come out fighting!

One day in the future the USA will win the WC and maybe all the haters will start loving.

Back on subject, I enjoy most MLS games no special team just like watching any of the games. I think the World Cup will go with history, everytime they are staged in South America on of those teams wins the competition.

Would fix one thing in this, Japan is also one of the few developed nations that soccer isn't the top sport, they completely love baseball there

Soccer's catching up rapidly there. It doesn't get the very regular TV coverage of baseball, but it does get the young girls, which brings in the young guys, which... etc.

Baseball is seen more and more of an old man's sport.

but japan on the other hand may not have good players but they do put in a lot of effort into the game.  I am always impressed by them.

I actually liked Gus broadcasting the Champions League final.  Yeah he needs more work, but he'll get there.  The main thing he needs to work on is when to get into full Gus-mode, anticipating chances better.

The criticism that we don't have a "home-grown" coach is completely misguided IMO.  If the best person for the job isn't from our nation, I don't care.  The American way is to import the best talent from everywhere else.  Soccer should be no different.  Give me the best coach available and make him want to become American before its done.

And here's the thing.. the U.S. should already know its role by now.. it's a mid-level team that is desperate for a superstar of some sort to bounce em up to the top..  So basically they're what I stated before.. a bunch of useless dinks..  If out of the 11 they bring  to the pitch now.. there is not one main character or driver of the team at this point.. there will me more of these types of problems.... Look at these champions.. give a sec i'll break it down for you.. Brazil - Ronaldo, Germany - Klinsmann, France - Zidane..  Now if you can't make sense of this idea.. then ur a lost cause my friend just like the USMNT

Not very impressed with the US play in that 2-goal win, but then again, scoring so early and going into a shell, combined with losing two to injuries, will do that.  The deciding goal was a great feeling after giving up the equalizer, because in so many other games, teams give up two in a row in that situation.  The analyst on ESPN was saying "go for the tie, go for the tie!" but our imported head coach knew best.  He and the people who gave him the job should from here on out, be beyond reproach.

congrats USA, wanted to watch it but early shifts didn't allow it.

Portugal will be without their lead centre back thanks to the red card and cointreao? (spelling) took a nasty injury so without their two best defenders USA have a chance of beating them aswell, if they can contain ronaldo somehow.

When the Germans weren't writhing around on the floor feigning injury they didn't look that great, so team USA drawn into a very tough group on paper have an excellent chance on getting through!

But ESPN, a very politically correct network was showing it both ways.  Apparently the official spelling sanctioned by FIFA was Brasil, but in everything else it was Brazil.

See, this is why soccer is stupid.

Really?   It was a little feisty but if Brazil aimed any of their chances not directly at the goalkeeper they might have won convincingly.

Spain vs Holland has to be the best game so far not because of the goal glut but the complete ownage of the holders and 2x Euro champions.  It was sweet revenge for last time out and some amazing goals.

Today will be interesting, if Spain don't win we could see them go out already which will be   .

Mexico has won more games against Brasil than any other country.  having said that, Brazil should have won the game, but as usual Brasil is just happy to dominate rather than score.

I have always been a fan of Brazil since I remember, but I gotta say they frustrate the hell out of me with their failure to win some games where they easily dominated the other team.

but over all it was a great game.  really good saves from both goalies.

Germany is a soccer powerhouse no?

I dont know much about the game but I am getting caught up in the world wide excitement for the tournament.

Sport is often one of the things that brings out the better Angels of our Natures. Having been all over much of the world I do know much of it is simply mad for the sport even if we Yanks aren't as much into it. It seems we are catching up however.

Iberian elimination is on the line in the US game Sunday.  I really think that game is a must-win.  Not even a tie is good enough, because considering how strong Germany looked, I expect zero points out of our last game.  I'll reserve the right to change my mind based on how well Ghana plays Germany, of course.  But Portugal is ripe to be beaten, and we must do just that, and not leave anything to doubt.

think Chile are my new Favourite team, epic work rate.  They were like flies on poo buzzing around the ball trying to get it back.

Let's not say Spain had an off day they were out performed by hungrier players all over the pitch.  I could see the body language when they went out, Spain still looked a little shell shocked and when they were pressed hard even their back line was constantly chased by 3 players.   I thought for sure they were going to tire but kept it up for the whole 90 minutes.

Now England have to pull it out tonight or face the same fate.   Suarez isn't 100% fit but it's about team performance.

In other news relating to USA's next game Ronaldo looks like he may have tweaked his knee in training so potentially one less threat to worry about it.

He's pulling a Dion Sanders.  In America-speak, that means he's built his excuse in for their upcoming loss.  If they win, Ronaldo will be the hero that fought through pain, if they lose, he was hurt.  Ahhhhh, professional athletes...

Godin should have been sent off, 2 others should have been booked. Gerrard was fouled, not the other way around. Considering England's domestic league is dominated by foreigners it isn't surprising England don't have any world class players in this generation. They performed admirably given that fact. Rooney needs a Shearer or Lineker upfront with him. :(

england is gone, it would take a miracle for them to advance.  they would have to beat costa rica by 4 or or more and hope that both costa rica and italy lose the next two games.  kinda doubt that would happen.

Stunning final goal by Uruguay. England controlled the stats http://www.espnfc.com/gamecast/statistics/id/383282/statistics.html but lost the match. It was the very first soccer game I watched from end to end and it was a good one. Uruguay has a fine goalie and a good defensive game. England got a lot of shots on goal but not many quality shots on goal.

Yes, it'll be the Dutch or the Germans. Unfortunately, I've got England and Korea in my office pool. I just don't see how you can take some of the best players in England and come up with a defensive right side that was so easily and consistently penetrated by the Italians. I didn't get to see the Uruguay game.

one more thing I forgot.  world of tanks has a match where they give you an indestructible tank and you get to play 3v3 soccer.  it's a lot of fun.  while you cannot kill the other tanks you can track him.  you basically use the main gun to shoot at the soccer ball and make it move or push it with the tank.  I have been playing it so much.  it's a lot of fun.  I think everybody gets the free tank.

The Texas Rangers played 6 games last week with an average crowd of 41,000 (35,000 on the season so far).

Please explain it to this former Detroit Tigers Season Ticket holder (03-11).   Your "average crowd" is comprised of fuzzy numbers.    Meaning, "tickets sold" are counted, not necessarily those in attendance.   I have been to games where half of Comerica Park was empty, because the bandwagon's fell off and they claim 35,000 in attendance (even in 2013 while in first place).   When in fact actual attendance was closer to 20,000-25,000, but that is how MLB is run.

As for Manchester United playing five games in April.  I can assure you that since Old Trafford seats around 75,000 IIRC, that there were close to 60k in attendance.  I follow Arsenal and they are practically selling out Emirates these days to the tune of almost 60,000 a game during Premier If you even think for one second that the Texas Rangers are even close to them in Net Worth, Marketing, Sales, etc please pass the bong to someone else.   I am not even a Man. U supporter (poor xbrit :bolt:) and cannot allow the silliness to go unnoticed.

Texas Rangers net worth - $825 Million  (Forbes 2014)
Manchester United net worth - #2.8 Billion  (Forbes 2014)

Come on man.   I attended the Russia vs. Sweden game at the Pontiac Silverdome for the 1994 World Cup.   There were about 72,000 fans in attendance, including some nice trim to mingle with.   The World Cup is on a completely superior level and untouchable by American Sports, sorry.

GO USA and it sucks that England was knocked out.   Even though most of experts had them eliminated, I was hoping they could play spoiler and advance.

Basically speaking, if your not interested in the subject matter why get involved?

Back on subject, I enjoy most MLS games no special team just like watching any of the games. I think the World Cup will go with history, every time they are staged in South America on of those teams wins the competition.

Changeup, X is correct and even you know this.   But I have to say, thanks for taking Princess from the Tigers.  :rofl

Mmmm, Nice trim... THe only reason I picked England was that my daughter is a big Liverpool fan and , of course, there are 5 of "them" on the team (only Sturridge produced a goal against the Eye-ties, though) and because all the "good teams" were already picked. Meaning: yes, they were underdogs to begin. And, yes, there is bigger money is soccer.

I'm still a bit miffed about it, we were robbed,  the second goal was a freak accident in Suarez being 5 yards offside and it rarely comes off a defensive players head like that meaning he is onside because it wasn't passed to him by his teammate.   If Gerrard left it one of the 2 defenders behind him could have dealt with it, if everyone leaves it Suarez is flagged offside no problemo.

Dolby is right about Godin he should have been sent off 1st half, clearly a 2nd yellow card, had sturridge stayed down and rolled around crying like muller did for germany.  Ref gave alot to Uruguay must have been a fan, two penalty shouts for shoulder charges in the box right when we were going to shoot not given with no attempt to play the ball.   :bhead  Brazil got one for falling over!

Rooney nearly had a hat trick if it was his day, just unlucky he couldn't be a foot length more accurate.

A draw would have been a fairer result and would have given us a chance to qualify but we are toast come again in 4 years  :D

I note that FIFA's kind of saying that the playful chanting we've seen around players like Bolatelli won't be tolerated.

While I don't endorse that kind of thing, much less do it myself, it seems a bit out of place for FIFA to come down all heavy now. Granted, you can kick people out of the stadiium but its a little inconsisent, given how long most of this stuff has been occurring.

Meanwhile, if I were going to taunt Bolatelli, I think it would be for the fact that he looks like a Slestack from the film, "Land of the Lost". Nice hair, bud.

A.  Attendance vs tickets sold are virtually unimportant because of revenue.  Ask Skuzzy not to count subs payed each month by people who do not play.  You made my point for me in the attendance differences.

B.  Attendance was taken from the ManU and Rangers web sites

C.  Learn net worth and what it consists of which is more than half merchandise sales.  Do you think there are more ManU fans world wide or Texas Rangers fans?

D.  Ticket prices are double plus the exchange-rate difference.

Nice try old friend but your post is more about you being a fan of soccer and not too much on the reality of the marketing and financial differences.

PS - princess was never that good.  John Davis is an idiot but the Tigers record ain't too different from the Rangers right now and the Rangers have the league-leading number of players on the DL.  We'll see how far you get with Kinsler in the post-season.  I heard he got picked off on his way to Detroit.

It seemed like Uruguay got a lot of the calls and the refs should have seen thru some of the acting done by the Uruguay players.

Its also was obvious, even to someone who doesnt know squat about the game, that Uruguay played better as a team even if they had less talent and far less time with the ball. England did not play a good midfield game, to often their best players were to far downfield wanting to score.

There is no longer a waiting list to get UM tickets though.   David Brandon and Brady Hoke have run that program into the ground and thousands of Alumni have given up their Season Tickets.   You could realistically see 20-40,000 less by mid-season if they keep serving up poo-poo platters.

The program was going down hill starting late in Lloyds tenure IMHO, if Hoke dont get the ball rolling soon with these halfway decent recruiting classes hes had I think hell be out the door. Lets see what Nussmeier can do as Off coord. Hes got a stable of running backs just need the oline to contribute.

True but your figures support me.  Baseball plays more games therefore they don't HAVE to have sellout crowds bro.  That was my point.  And I suggest you check your figures.  ManU sold a TON more merchandise than the Texas Rangers.

Go back and read who I responded to and you'll actually understand my point.  Soccer has to fill stadiums (and they do) because they play so few games compared to baseball.  Nothing you've said disputes that.  Nice misdirect with net worth though.

but expenses are higher in baseball when it comes to the stadium.  they dont illuminate 1/10 of the stadium because only 3k people showed up instead of 30k.  in soccer they dont have the luxury of playing 180 a year because they actually move while most of the baseball players are watching the pitcher throw the ball to the catcher.

even regulations require that soccer players must rest at least 24 hours between games due to how much running they do.  same reason why football players only play once a week.  in baseball only the pitcher and catcher actually get to play, the others get to chew and spit on the floor.

Tomorrow is going to be intense, no two ways about it. If USA win, they secure advancement, if they lose, they'll have to get a result against a Germany that still needs to secure their spot. If USA v POR is a draw, USA and Germany will both advance if either USA v GER or POR v GHA end in a draw. I don't know about you guys, but I'll probably be walking out of a bar with no voice or money after the game tomorrow.

Portugal are in a little bit of trouble after their last match. It has to be a confidence destroyer.
To beat a bright USA team they'll need a lot of luck.

I cant wait to see Belgium v Russia; Akinfeev has had the butter fingers and  I'm expecting a Belgium goal glut  :x

It was very hit and miss for both sides. A fair result in the end.
Tim Howard was a little shakey, he'll have to get his head right against Germany.

As for what semp and Changeup are saying, Footballers have been known to run between 8-13kilometers in games.
Cafu for ACMilan while playing Full Back position ran out to something like 14k at an age of 32 I think, a superb athlete.
Box to Box style mids run 10-12k on average, Muassa Sissoko is a regular at doing that as are many others, legend Gennaro Gattuso being one.

Aussie Rules guys average above 12km per game, and those are some big boys.

They don't get the "ow ow oww my knee hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrts" breaks like the soccer prima donnas do, either.

naw the us was so confident they would win that they stopped defending.  you could see in the last few plays that many of the Portugal players were alone while the us defenders  were just walking around.  the us went from a guaranteed place to a maybe when there's a rainy day in hell.

For a country not being very into soccer I am amazed about the US. Both goals were beautiful played.

At these kind of temperatures and humidity I have to admit to be a bit surprised.

The ref gave the players a break at the 38 minute mark, which I have NEVER ever seen before.

Yet, after these highlights, I am afraid the US and Germany will pull the tactical card and play a B-team match to regain their strengths for the shoot out finals.
There is no need to run for anything, both are through to next round and they can eliminate two dangerous opponents virtually with doing nothing at all. Germany also has a serious advantage of an extra day off.

Yet, it's the former German team manager vs his former assistant. Still could get interesting  :devil

Well watched the highlights looked like US could have scored another couple but that was the save of the tournament by Howard for me.

Ronaldo is world class and that cross at the end was inch perfect.   A little annoying for USA, they should be through by merit but at least they control their own destiny.

Have to not let Germany stuff them otherwise Ghana might sneak through on Goal difference if it works out for them.

Yes, in football anything can happen, then you have the unforeseeable. At least in Spain. For example, yesterday in spanish segunda división (http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/3277/la-liga/2014/06/22/4905187/las-palmas-cordoba-la-liga-play-off-ends-with-pitch-invasion) Las Palmas and Córdoba were playing a match that would decide who would get to Primera división (FC Barcelona, Real Madrid...) next season. About 30 s to the end of the match Las Palmas were winning 1-0. Some idiotic fans start to celebrate and invade the pitch.  The referee stops the match. After 10 min. the match can be resumed, and in that last 30s Córdoba scores, making them and not Las Palmas the ones who get promoted (after 42 years). Fights follow between Las Palmas fans.

I have to disagree slightly.  You should see how the average fan follows the NFL or NHL.  I won't include MLB, however.   Baseball has it's hard core fans, but I find many I've met are somewhat detatched.....I blame the statistical aspects of the game for that.   :lol

All that said, way to go Team USA! Also was great to see Ronaldo play....I'm not regular fan of soccer, but even my untrained eyes can see there is something special about him.

Not really... Consider that most tennis playters I know who play competitively (as amateurs, of course, in the Colonial USTA) tend to play better after watching the pros play. It isn't that odd. They get geeked up watching and actually will emulate things they see. For ref on this phenomenon, see Timothy Galway's book on "THe Inner Game..." As for soccer, I know a number of people who play that as well - and probably do the same thing. My daughter, who just left for Japan, is a big soccer fan and a pretty solid amateur player. She watches, then plays.
But the rest of 'em..? Second handers getting unearned glory from their drunken and sedentary perches (almost as if they were some kind of aging old money inbred Imperial toffs or something). You can practically see them in their slack-jawed and drooling stupor, numbly executing a clumsy monkey-aced dance every time "their" team , duuuuh, "puts duh round thing into dat net box, duuuuh". Afterwards, they no doubt go out in the street to taunt kiddies or jack up old ladies for their subsidiy money.

But maybe I'm reading too much into your comment...

the 9 games covers this world cup and the next plus one or two games after that.

The 4 month Stadium ban means he can't even be a spectator at a little league game.   He's gonna miss 2 European tournament plus his team is thinking of releasing him.  Barcelona might not want him anymore.   His sponsors are kicking him out to.   so it's going to cost him 50 or more million dollars at least.

Of course he can still play in Uruguay league but he won't make the kind of money he makes now.

that's because a some continents dont really have strong teams.  for example oceania, they get 1 spot.  tahiti made it to the 2013 confederations cup in brazil.  the ended up with 1 goal scored and 24 against.    in that part of the globe it's always australia/new zeland. who else can participate in the cup?

however Africa has had some really strong teams this cup and made some decent showing.  asia  had japan and south korea.  not very skilled teams but they played with a lot of heart.

It all comes down to really have strong teams compete against each other.  give it a few more years and more african/asian/oceania countries will be strong enough to compete internationally.

Except there aren't commercials in soccer, compared to basketball, football, and hockey where they stop the game specifically to show more commercials.

And Americans already "give a crap about it" considering that every world cup, Americans buy the most tickets to the matches aside from the host nation

You guys have a great team.  It is a shame it doesn't get the support it deserves, because of some "It isn't an "American game"" attitude.  Commercials??  That is precisely the reason that it isn't popular in the US...there aren't ENOUGH commercials capable of being shown without eating into the game time.  Thus your networks aren't interested.

Again, crying shame.

I have, I watched most games of the World Cup so far.  The last game they played a bunch of subs and got a red card, so someone isn't playing versus the US (not sure if he's a normally starter or not), and then nearly lost to lowly South Korea.  They also had to play Albania and Russia.  Not exactly powerhouses.  Meanwhile the US had to play much tougher sides to advance.  Oh and 2/3rds of the teams the US qualified with in the World Cup are still in the tournament.

If Altidore is still out, I give Belgium a chance, otherwise USA wins, no problem.

They rested many of their starters for the S.Korea game.  Algeria and Russia are very much like the USA, run their socks off but not much creative flair.  I like your confidence but Belgium have a solid keeper, Kompany and vertonghen? at the back will keep most strikers quiet.  Hazard and martens have been 2 stand out wingers for me so far, their only weaker area seems to be centre forward.   Lukaku was very average in one game, if he plays like he does regularly at Everton, I can't see how the US will keep them out.   Might want to hope for extra time or penalties.

If they do win I'll stroll around in the MA in a storch and give people free kills.   :lol

cannot believe Brazil advances on penalties.  I had to take a couple of xanax as I thought I was gonna have a heart attack.  the goalie was the savior.  now mexico tomorrow against holland, which probably holland will win then usa on tuesday.

I need more xanax lol

I don't know who that Univision play by play guy was in the Mexico - Netherlands game, but he must have the best play by play voice of all time.  If only I understood Spanish.  I'm not even talking about the call, which I didn't understand (outside of goals), just the voice.  I'd put him ahead of everyone, Ernie, Verne, Keith... everyone.

MLS just signed a bigger TV deal, going with FOX/FOX Sports next season

Only because of Howard's goal tending. It would most likely have the biggest blow out in WC history if not for Howard.

USA should be very proud of their performance.  Howard had a great game in goal and the work rate was exceptional.

On another day they might have scored a couple of their chances and stolen it but credit to Belgium they were the better side and deserved to win.

WTF happened to the Brazilian defense? Silva gone and suddenly it's like a plug being pulled?
Maybe too much emotions, flag weaving, Neymar-crying instead of working on their game...

Something I saw on twitter:

silva was the organiser, the captain,   david luiz was terrible.

I just hope they don't get too complacent in the final, Holland or Argentina will be much tougher than that.

Brazil put all their eggs in one basket and Germany crushed them one by seven.

One of the best player's of all-time had his lumbar vetebrae cracked by some loser on the field.. He's lucky it wasn't life threatening.. How would your team play if something happened like that to your best player.. Get well soon Neymar, more important things than soccer at that point  :(

Not that I approve what happened to Neymar or acknowledge that it is a huge loss to the Brazil team, yet, like other teams ( Argentina, Netherlands, Ghana come to my mind ) Brazil has built the hopes and whole team around one player, being Neymar.

As much as I appreciate players like Robben, Messi, Neymar and such, take them out ( not just knock them out but keep them covered ) and there seems to be no team left to play with. A very single minded and dangerous decision from the staff running the national teams. Also I see it very doubtful to place the responsibility for succes on the shpulders of a 22 year old.

Yet, that a player biting his way through the cup is penalized accordingly and a player who intendedly breaks someones back is not is one of the things I will never understand in modern soccer. Get well soon Neymar  :salute

Not a football fan, however I did see this match. These guys are paid a fortune to play a game. Yes one of their guys was injured, but to suggest that the reason they played like a second rate Sunday League side is solely down to the fact that they were all so concerned about the injured chap is fatuous at best.

To think that this group of preening primadonnas has anyone in their minds other than themselves is equally innane. :old:
