Title: New Computer Setup
Post by: Raven3 on May 26, 2014, 10:10:46 AM
I am getting a new computer with a much better video card.  If I save my Settings folder I should able to just copy it into AH folder on the new computer right?

yes, and you should grab the terrains and skins folders as well just to save on download time. They will be "updated" when you first log on but you won't have to download them again.

It's one of the downloads on the Trainer's page "One Page Quick Reference". I'd credit it if I knew who made it.

there's some files from your settings folder that you shouldnt copy.  I cant remember what they are but there's 4 or 5 that will mess up with your game.

You should not install "world.cfg", "freq.cfg", "sysinfo.cfg", and "video8.cfg" from a different computer.  Those files contain information specific to the computer the game is running on.

OK so I should just cut them out of my saved settings folder?  Will they be replaced by the game or will I have to cut and paste them from the new settings folder to the saved settings folder, delete the new settings folder and then past in the save settings folder with the new .cfg files?

The game will write new files. Just delete them from the saved folder. You can also copy the whole folder and delete them from the new installation before you run the game the first time on your new PC.

Beware the included Mcafee 30 day free trial anti-virus program. AV programs generally don't play nice with AH. Personally I would uninstall it.

Avoid installing McAfee or Norton!!  They are nothing but virus programs themselves!

Ordered it sans any virus protection. Also ordered it with Windows 7. Aren't you running any virus protection/firewall? What are youguys using?

I think you'll find the trial AV installed but it won't be active yet. I use the free program you can download from Microsoft,  MSE. I don't expect anything to work well enough so I try to stick to safe sites and don't open suspect  emails.

I use Avira. It's lite weight but is updated often. I'm pretty careful about my surf but the wife isn't as good and it has caught a number of things BEFORE they could cause trouble. I like it, it works, and it's free.

I've been using Avast for over a decade without any major problems. There used to be some issues some months ago about it being too eager to quarantine totally legit programs, but that can easily be avoided by putting them on the bypass list. If some program gets quarantined, the bypassing option is given while reverting the said program from the quarantine. For a lightweight version of Avast I recommend the custom install and unchecking every unnecessary module. The FileShield is basically the only one you should leave checked, resulting something like MSE with options to completely shut the program down e.g. during gameplay.

ESET Nod32 is about as non-intrusive as it gets.  I would say it is the best A/V for gamers.

That is not an endorsement.  I do not use any A/V software on my computers.

I run Avast free, in silent mode, and use Malwarebytes and Glary's Utilities  for malware, computer clean up, etc.
