Title: Compliants
Post by: earl1937 on June 05, 2014, 01:24:22 PM
:airplane: I know that we have some folks in here that complain about a lot of things! Bottom line guys, this is by far the most realistic aircraft game on the net and if you pay attention, you can learn a lot about flying the real thing. Wish I was 14 again, when I started learning to fly and had something like this to practice with! Wow!

You know Earl, you hit the nail on the head.  I think I must personally have around 12-14000 hours of simulator time ranging from Microsoft Flight Simulator 1 (aka subLogic) to X, Jet 1.0 for the Amiga, Chuck Yeagers Air Combat, F-16, Eurofighter, EAW, Su-27 Flanker 1,1.5,2,Lock-On and it's variants. And I've been playing Aces High for over 14 years (though with a younger family, not so much lately).  I only have around 50 hours of right hand seat flying.

But having flown simulators for decades now - I find flying any real aircraft easy.  Heck, flying AND landing a Cessna 172RG on a cross wind is a whole lot easier than trying to navigate a Aces High P-15D with iron over Nazi-occupied France against the likes of JG54 sticks.

Just saying... :D

I attained my glider pilot at 16 and private pilot at 17. Sadly I currently only fly gliders spring and fall and have lapsed my ppl due to money and time. But I can honestly say picking this game up it wasnt the flying I had to learn it was and still is the acm, shooting,  and learning the game. And that being said I agree with you et37 <S>

AH is not the most realistic aircraft game on the net, but it is in my opinion the best compromise between realism and playability. Especially for a MMO.

I'm sorry to be the naysayer, but AH is a casual-sim. That's OK though, because that's exactly what AH should be, and I'm sure HiTech would agree. There are study-sims out there and borderline study-sims like DCS World, Cliffs of Dover (with 3rd party updates), Falcon 4 (with 3rd party updates), and others...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn1xbahH_x0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDYnSmBcjEk

Obviously this kind of fidelity and detailed simulation is overkill for a MMO. The learning curve is already steep in AH...

I can not speak to DCS , but to call any of the IL2 stuff realistic is laughable.

You confuse button pushing with realism of flight.

I'll take your word for it HiTech, though I don't consider Il2 a study sim, just a casual one which is why it wasn't on my list. AH is right where it needs to be in my honest opinion, apart from the visuals and sound, but you're working on that.  :aok

first time I was in a plane I was a baby...second time I was 40.....

I flew the super decathlon(sp?)

not only did I fly it but I took off... did some High G maneuvers....

flew it like a champ, the guy who took me up was very surprised at how well I flew it...

before we rolled he started to explain all the gauges....I beat him to it and explained them to HIM.... :D

the 2 differences to me...

the rudder peddles were much stiffer...

and G forces very much mess with your body if you are not used to them :rofl :rofl :rofl

where is the puking emotocon....... :cry

I have absolutely NO doubt that Aces High taught me how to fly a plane.(obviously not everything...there is to know...:-)

I will say..... I know I am not supposed to be envious....

but all you that get to and have flown all your life's or do it as a job....

thats the one thing in this world I am envious of.....not even old MOPARS make me envious....could be I owned one for a long time and only flew one plane one time....

but I wish I could have had a life like that.

When I look for realism I am looking at the flight model.  The systems model is very secondary.

IL-2's flight model was a pathetic joke.  Not sure about Cliffs of Dover as I've never played it.

AH is not the most realistic aircraft game on the net, but it is in my opinion the best compromise between realism and playability. Especially for a MMO.

Sometimes it is debatable what's realistic and what is not.

Take Hitech's engine modeling-You get your minutes of WEP, and then it gets flipped off automatically. Is this perfectly realistic? Obviously not. But then again, having an engine fail after say, 15 minutes of WEP, is probably not realistic either, in light of the way engines were sometimes hot-rodded during the war. But online fighter pilots fly half hour sorties, and they have NO concern for engine life and the like concerns. Which is to say, if you modeled engines realistically, everybody would for the most part effectively have infinite WEP. So which is more realistic? An engine failure that isn't very plausible or an automatic system which forces the player to limit themselves to book WEP limits? I think the latter. This is one example of choice Hitech has made which may seem less realistic at first glance, but I think arguably makes things MORE realistic.

No shame in puking Ink.  I have lots of time in Decathlons and I get queasy at times when I get back in one to shake off the aerobatic cobwebs.  And I'm one of those lucky ones you mention who flies for a living.

You haven't lived until your on short final, and the guy behind you in a very small cockpit decides it is a good time to let you know what a 1 hour old partially digested bean and cheese burrito smells like.

It tends to break up your concentration just a tad.

My first passenger in a Cessna 152:

"hey, your house is down there, want to go down and look?" I chopped throttle, pushed the nose down and banked hard. He told me  was going to be sick so I started looking for a bag. the best I could do was my flight bag. By the time I emptied it he had already started filling his hat. I went back to paying attention to flying when he decided he'd open the window to finish hurling and dump out his hat. Needless to say, that didn't work out to well. He lost his hat, and the entire cockpit was covered in vomit mist. The starboard side of the plane had a nice orange "airbrush" job once we landed. The guys in the fbo house could see it.

Of any game Ive ever seen released none have been as FUBAR as Cliff Of Dovers release. I wouldnt even call it in Alpha when they released it, generally you can at least play an Alpha. I got so disgusted with IL2 COD I just never returned to it.

Would I like to see a graphics update ASAP in AH? Of course I would. But its always been well written software and any bugs are quickly corrected. Were in an era now where game makers release crapola writes un-apologetically to make their money and then fix it with patches for many months after initial release. So with to many games we, the players, are the paying Beta testers, "Beta if were lucky". Just look at this BF4 mess. 10 months and still going and now they are preening over their new cops and robbers game without even having fixed BF4.

I trust AH to release their next version with very little tweaks needed. There are very few game makers I'd say that for.

When I was an Air Cadet I had one "air experience" flight in a DeHavilland Chipmunk with a Royal Navy Harrier pilot.

He did everything he could to make me relinquish my RAF issued full English.

Managed to retain it though came ery close to seeing it a second time  :uhoh
