It's not paranoia if they really is somebody out to get you, or your phone as the case may be. :noid :noid :noid
From that bastion of conspiracy theories Popular Science (http://www.popsci.com/article/technology/mysterious-phony-cell-towers-could-be-intercepting-your-calls):
“Interceptor use in the U.S. is much higher than people had anticipated,” Goldsmith says. “One of our customers took a road trip from Florida to North Carolina and he found 8 different interceptors on that trip. We even found one at South Point Casino in Las Vegas.”
Who is running these interceptors and what are they doing with the calls? Goldsmith says we can’t be sure, but he has his suspicions.
“What we find suspicious is that a lot of these interceptors are right on top of U.S. military bases. So we begin to wonder – are some of them U.S. government interceptors? Or are some of them Chinese interceptors?” says Goldsmith. “Whose interceptor is it? Who are they, that's listening to calls around military bases? Is it just the U.S. military, or are they foreign governments doing it? The point is: we don't really know whose they are.”

GSM has had a known bug for years that enables easy interception. They're not fixing it. Why? Because government agencies would have a much harder time to eavesdrop suspected criminals.
-
I read that as well and while it is disconcerting to say the least they could have actually done some investigative journalism and tried to dig a bit deeper. It's not all that hard to work out who owns a given piece of land. Once you have that you can actually ask whose tower it is and what purpose it serves.
-
What I read said that the "towers" were no more than laptops with a type of box receiver that tricks the phone into thinking its a tower...said more than likely the people using them are trying to get passwords and other personal information...if I can find the link I will post....
-
That would make more sense. Maybe I skimmed something but I thought they were saying that these were like actual physical towers, just not owned by the telecoms. I would think a laptop setup with some external hardware would have a very limited range though.

That’s Not a Tree, It’s a Cell Phone Tower :lol

You ever connect to your bank through your mobile connection? Man in the middle attack makes that risky.

There are no known ones around here. Since it has become more public now, maybe some people can get together and start actively hunting for them

You don't have to drive to be in the range of a fake tower, duh.

Yes that's how man in the middle attacks work. Someone taps between you and your service provider without you knowing. The threat of this is becoming more common with the popularity of wireless internet connections rising.

I can guarantee you that even though the popularity of wireless internet connection is rising that they wont be able to intercept my banking info using cell towers or wifi.

I guess you like to line up at the service counters then :D
And even then you're not really safe since banks themselves are connected to the internet and get hacked.
Just in case you have something smart-arsed to say about that TOO: http://www.cnet.com/news/jpmorgan-hackers-altered-deleted-bank-records-says-report/

dont forget people can also kidnap me and force me to take all the money out. or the bank can be robbed just as I am walking out with millions in cash.
dude, we talking about wifi and cell towers. and my guarantee is due to the fact that I dont use either for banking. and only time I go to the bank is to deposit a check.
and I never said i was totally safe, i just said I am safe from wifi and fake cell towers :D.
but feel free to spin it another 4 or 5 pages, you love doing that :salute.

On the contrary you seem to extend losing arguments like a hobby. Regardless of the fact, many people are affected by this vulnerability. I carry three different LTE providers with me at most times so I'm with a fast connection in most places where I go.

ok please enlighten me since I am getting paranoid here. how can somebody intercept my banking information with either wifi or fake cell towers when I dont do banking using wifi or cell phones?
and dont bring up the "they can hack into the bank....". that's not what we are talking about. we are just talking about people intercepting my banking info thru cell towers or wifi.

The world doesn't revolve around you guncrasher. I already stated that you have to physically go to the bank to not be vulnerable to this attack and even then the bank itself may be hacked, exposing you.

you mean that a hardwired connection to my bank can be intercepted by wifi or fake cell towers? just wondering because that's how I do all my banking. not thru cell phones or wifi's.

You most likely do not own a private copper line directly to the bank so yes, at any router your connection to the bank can be intercepted and routed through an attackers computer. This router most commonly is the one you own yourself. Home routers have been found to be the number one vulnerability in modern day networks. Most people never even change the admin passwords and leave the boxes at default settings.

of course you are right about that. but please do explain how somebody using wifi or fake cell towers somebody can intercept my banking info when I use neither to do banking?

you forgot to mention the bit where your browser spazes out if the certificate is not valid, or in the case of apps they just won't connect. In fact Android OS will even warn you if it sees such stuff going on (from experience, as I run HTTPS decrypt at home and on several client networks).

People say that. But . . .
There are over 23,000 pages of laws at the federal level, and more at the state and local level -- a blizzard of regulations. Organizations (including the government) have tried to count the number of criminal laws and have failed -- they can't even count them (see http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304319804576389601079728920 (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304319804576389601079728920))! Chances are (see for example http://www.amazon.com/Three-Felonies-Day-Target-Innocent/dp/1594035229/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410158597&sr=8-1&keywords=people+break+laws+every+day (http://www.amazon.com/Three-Felonies-Day-Target-Innocent/dp/1594035229/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410158597&sr=8-1&keywords=people+break+laws+every+day)) that in the normal course of your life, you violate laws without ever knowing it. All that is needed is someone with information and the motivation to go after you.
Sure, if you never in your life get in anyone's way, the odds of that are small. But, donate or belong to the wrong group, be too vocal in support of the wrong cause, compete with some business or group or piss someone off with some inside pull, and it can be a different story.
There's a reason the Constitution has protections for privacy, due process, etc., and prohibitions against unreasonable search, etc.
