Title: Scotland
Post by: Hap on September 18, 2014, 08:09:11 PM
The votes are being counted.

Though this has been in the news over the past month, today I am transfixed.

Some of this BBC vid is good.  The end, paltry.

But, here it is: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-29240106 (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-29240106)

As much as I understand there is a regions pride involved, the fallout for the Scotts I feel, will be too much for such a small new country to handle. The Debt alone would be a big hurdle (Some sources have stated that even if the Scotts sold off all their oil reserves, it would not be enough to cover the next few years )

From an outsiders perspective, I have not seen the scotts being oppressed or being denied benefits. I even went and read up on the dispersion of funds in the UK, and it looks like the Barnett formula gives a greater proportion of government funds to Scotland then a per head calculation would provide (this would benefits the Welsh more).

I hope for a No vote, because it feels like the best option for the Scottish people. Yes some pride will have to be swallowed, but the country will remain stable & viable.

We all end up dead, it’s just a question of how and why. Every man dies, not every man really lives.I am William Wallace! And I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny. You’ve come to fight as free men… and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight?

Fight? Against that? No! We will run. And we will live.

Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you’ll live… at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin’ to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take… OUR FREEDOM!

First of all, get it right.  Scotland is part of Great Britain, which is part of the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.  Scotland leaving would not change the title of the country.  Frankly, I'd like Northern Ireland to rejoin the rest of Ireland so we can drop the stoopid 'Yoo Kay' title and go back to being just plain old Great Britain.

That'd be awesome actually.  Leave Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to deal with their own unemployment and debt, we'd be rich!  OMG, what a genius idea!  FLOOB for Prime Minister.    :old:  Can we vote Newcastle out as well?  In fact, anywhere north of Derby, if they can't learn to speak English I say kick em out.

Silly for Scotland to try to secede.  For as small as the countries are in Great Britain, they need to band together for economic and mutual support.  Just for comparison, the entirety of Great Britain is miniscule compared to the United States.  (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EjBzwFddmUk/ThND7soIfMI/AAAAAAAAALQ/FfBm2IrkArU/s1600/uk_usa_central_extract.png)

DaveBB, you're forgetting that the UK and its member nations are also part of the European Union. If Scotland had seceded from the UK they would undoubtedly still be an EU member. And the non-EU countries (like my own) in Europe are part of the EU common marked even if they're not part of the EU political union. The EU is an economic powerhouse that rivals your own great union.

Anyways... It's a moot point.

I know it does not matter now, but if Scotland had left the UK it would not be automatically be part of the EU. It would have to apply to become a member, and from what I heard, some EU members were already saying that they would not accept Scotland. Some EU members were worried about promoting separatist ideals, and others feared that the Scottish economy (and all its debts) would further harm the Euro.

Here is another very interesting map, showing that individual states in the U.S. have the same GDP as entire countries.  Mind you, this map has not taken into account the enormous oil and natural gas boom that has continued to develop in the U.S.

Each state can make its own little laws, all of which are trumped by Federal law.  But no one even gives a second thought to crossing a state's border.  You have passports and checkpoints and all that stuff in the European Union.  Plus we all speak the same language in the U.S. That's a huge difference compared to the EU right there.

When I get into a car and drive from here through the Netherlands and Belgium to France, I would not have to show my passport even once. I wouldn't even drive through any checkpoint at all. Our local border to the Nether lands for example is for the most part very hard to notice, it's just that suddenly the roadsigns are different ;)

But of course, all those countries are still sovereign, independent countries. There's no real EU government. And as far as i know there ain't no Texan ambassadors to to Ohio or North Caroline either. USA, as a sovereign nation is a UN member, the EU is not - because it ain't one.

Apart from the language thing, that's completely wrong. My country is not even a member nation, only part of the European Economic Area (EEA), the economic union if you will. Still I can get in my car right now and drive from Northern Norway all the way to the boot of Italy and never have to show my passport. The EU and extended to other non member nations through the EEA provides for the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital throughout Europe. Many if not most pensioners in my country have second homes in Southern Europe to get away from the cold winters here. Spain is very popular.

This is essentially one market with freedom of movement for all citizens:

Strange that pointing out that the UNITED States of America is a federated union like the EU and Russia should be considered trolling.  :huh
