The ongoing siege in Sydney is not even over yet, but Australians are already showing what Mateship means to us!

Not concerned about the POS in the cafe. More concerned about the 2 cronies at unknown locations that aparently have bombs ready to detonate.
Thoughts are with the people trapped in the cafe and thier families.
Dont judge all Muslims by the actions of a few. But Judge those who pull this type of watermelon with extreme shows of force.

That story was pulled. its looking like a lone nut job atm.

Yes, mental health is a problem. its not treated well anywhere in the world atm. People who are not diagnosed correctly, can be influenced to extreme ideas whether they are religious or geopolitical views. A robust healthcare system, can help.
-
You can't cure mental illness with lead. 60 Minutes had a very good story on it last night. Insurance companies have multiple Doctors with 100% denial rates. The interview Scott Pelley had with Dr. Paul Keith was shameful.

Problem is when so many members of the group either openly or covertly stand so close to the fundamentalist it is hard not be to paint them with the same brush

How's that anti-gun stance working out for the citizens of Sydney?

Probaby prevented a dozen such incidents so far :) Hard to keep someone at gunpoint when you have no gun to point. Even if the patrons would have been packing, starting a shootout in a full cafe with a maniac wouldn't end very well and the shooter would most likely be prosecuted if survived.
-
Because what every tense situation needs is a spark.
Atm the lack of guns has stopped the a full shoot out. In fact, all people involved are scared but alive at this point, and I hope that all people involved including the police and the gunman will be make it out alive. Put him behind bars, using the rules of our country. Killing him would only give fuel to the hate.

sorry, you can't use "probably" as an argument. The gunman seemed to have little issue getting a gun.

There will always be guns. If someone started shooting it out vigilante style in the face there might be 10 corpses right now instead of hostages.

Sorry you cannot use "Seemed" as an argument ether.

 You see, the difference is I was not using probably as basis for a statistic. However, the gunman does in fact have a gun. So I'll retract my "seems" if it makes you feel better. My corrected statement now reads "The gunman had little issue getting a gun". Regardless, the bad guy has a gun and now the law abiding citizens have no choice but to be victims. It is easy to target a population that is forced to be unarmed.

Except like Pewter said HE HAS A GUN. I'd rather have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

And those 100 other nutjobs that do _not_ have a gun we never hear about. Gee, I wonder why?

With all these innocents lives on the line it would seem awfully selfish to turn this into a pro/anti gun discussion.

If their lives somehow depended on our discussion I would agree.

If they were serious nutjobs they'd find a gun (or other instrument) like this guy did. They are just sad people with ideas. It's when they act on those ideas they become dangerous. Bad people do bad things and always find a way to accomplish them. Why should good law abiding citizens suffer for it? This is just the world we live in unfortunately.
Also, just saw that it's reported as over. Hope everyone made it out safe there. :pray

Yes but arguing that having free gun laws would stop things from happening is false. At the same time this happens and 3 die in AU in Philly 5 die in a domestic shootout.

ah..so for you, it is the NUMBER of people that is killed that make your take notice, not how they die.
so if say only one person was killed that would not be a tragedy to you.

Not a single person has said having free gun laws would stop things from happening. Having free gun laws will let the law-abiding citizens protect themselves when one of these things happens. Gun laws do absolutely NOTHING to curb violent crimes. All they do is make the law-abiding citizens helpless against those crimes. Criminals couldn't care less about your stupid laws except that they make your people easy prey for these criminals. The great thing about free gun laws is that they give people like you the ability to still choose to be victims but it also allows others the choice to not be victims. Law-abiding citizens are not the ones you need to look out for, it is the criminals that execute these plans that you need to look out for and they do not care about your laws.

It's all about relativity. If I had to choose between 5 or 1 I would choose 1. The point is that if people can get access to handguns without proper background checks, mentally unstable persons have a very easy and legal access to weapons. This puts their friends, families and bystanders at risk. Not to mention the tragedies with children finding their uncles/parents guns and accidentally shooting themselves or their siblings/cousins/friends/parents.
I have fought with my wife many times about having a gun in the house (well not FOUGHT but discussed). It wasn't until our children were born that I saw her point - I'm just too sloppy a person to leave a gun in the house with children. It takes a real pedantic type of mind to be REAL careful with it at all times when children are around.
But on some level I also agree with you guys - illegal guns will always be available for criminals. But I surely endorse proper control for at least the legal ones.

PROPER BAKCGROUND CHECKS!
what the heck will that do?
my state has the MOST restrictive laws PERIOD! and still the bad guys(and gals) get guns.
but for the auzzies, you cant own guns PERIOD, so that means, the people down under will put the yanks to shame with having ZERO gun related incidents.
but hey this was only one compared to all the ones the US has, right?
so if you cut the number of people killed by guns each year from 12 to 6...hey its a success!

You and your wife surely made the right decision.
I grew up with several guns in the house and when I raised a family of my own, our guns were there. When my three boys reached the age where guns piqued their interest, the wife and were quick to explain these are simply tools that must be respected. We did the same with knives, cars, etc...
We also raised them to be respectful of all people and animals, and to be humble. I am glad to see them becoming men now instilled with good values. Not one of them has ever thought of picking up one of the guns I have given them (or bought on their own) to settle an argument.
It's not that hard....

Your passion is commendable, but uneducated. Australians can own guns, there are simply restrictions on caliber size and what type of guns are allowed.
Even England, from which Australia modeled many of its gun laws and which is one of the strictest nations gun-control wise, allows private gun ownership.

SIMPLE RESTRICTIONS!
sorry mate, you cant own that single barrel 12 bore because you cant show 'genuine need, genuine reason for it'
so in other words, you cant own a gun...

???? the only main restriction to owning a gun in Aus and NZ is around automatic weapons....and even then you can...but you can't have the rounds for them.... oh yeah...and that you can't just cruise the streets with them....Guns in general that is
If you have a gun safe and a brain.... to be honest...half a brain(the test is a joke)....you can own any number of guns

Yep if the genuine need is to shoot up some bottles after a 6 pack with friends and maybe the wife after an argument, which is the case for many... :rock
My kids are becoming old enough now to not have completely stupid accidents - but now gun laws tightened so much that owning hand guns requires you to show you really are into hobby shooting and owning a shotgun or rifle requires you to get a hunting license. Still Finland has about 2 million guns for 5 million people. It's practically impossible to get a gun permit for self defence unless you carry money for work.
I know for a fact that I can't let my wife handle guns at all. She tried my uncles 357 magnum one time and she managed almost to shoot a hole in my car door or her own toe. Granted it did have a very sensitive trigger. We didn't let her shoot after that :)
I had my own scary moment too years ago with a .22LR. I shot a flat block of steel/aluminium scrap at a scrap yard. The bullet flattened perfectly flat, bounced back and hit me right between my eyes. I wouldn't believe that happened if it didn't happen to me. Luckily it had lost all its energy by the time it bounced to my head.
