Title: Memorial flight scheduled
Post by: Doc4 on April 07, 2015, 01:07:06 PM
First of all I have to thank this entire community for the outpouring of heart felt condolences, I speak for our entire squad when I say thank you  :salute

Cashew would be quietly ecstatic to see this.

The Unforgiven and Peanut (grandson) will be having a memorial flight in the MA on Thursday at 9:00 pm CST. It will be announced on 200, and will be routed to middle of map (depending on map) all countries are invited to join our VOX for this will be 263

Negative non combat flight.

Negative non combat flight.

That rarely works in the MA, for obvious reasons. You might get exceptionally lucky, but it there is a reason non combat flights are usually done int he SEA (the CM's are very helpful in these cases).

The last allegedly 'non combat memorial flight' I witnessed in the MA ended in a bloodbath, not only in the air but even more so on CH 200, PMs and this forum.

(Edited the many spelling & grammar errors as pointed out by Zoney  :old:)

Last time we had a memorial flight was for the 49th, I believe, about 60 or so players from 3 countries were there.  no firing.

given proper announcement most guys who want to participate will be there and those who dont wont show up.

Agreed.  AvA has already offered to host this, and SEA people probably will as well.  It's a needless risk, for no obvious gain, to do it in the MA.

First, you would have to know that there is one.

Only a fraction of players ever read the BBS at all. Only a fraction of the players is tuned to 200. Many don't even keep much attention to the country channel. They just fly towards the enemy.
Then add to it the confusion of the MA and the fact than many players have only a limited command of the English language. And once the first bullets start to fly, you have a great chance general mayham will commence "But they shot first!" - "No, you did!"

Been there, seen that. More than once.

If you do not want to be shot at, use the SEA. MA is a chaotic place of combat. Everyone being around here for some time should know that by now,

After having seen that so many times, and even got fooled by a "memorial" B-29 mission that suddenly flattened our strats, I have no inhibitions myself anymore.
If it's red, it's dead. The MA is no sanctuary.

Keep in mind quite a few do not monitor 200 including me.  Announce it on 200 then asked for each country to post it on country specific channels and more than once.  That should work.

The AVA folks took care of our needs for Bentnail's memorial. Highly recommended.  :aok

We will be honored to host what ever you may need . Right down to Cashews favorite ride . Just let Jaeger or a member of the AvA staff know and we will be happy to help out !

Lusche is quite right.  I have seen a number of memorial flights end badly because someone was not aware of what was going on.  You might get lucky, then again, you might not.

No reason to risk it.  Just announce it in the MA, and those who wish to honor the downed pilot will attend.  Having it in the AvA or the SEA's insures someone will be able to make sure it goes off as planned, with no disruptions.

Just a thought, nothing more.

I truly thank all of you for your concern and input, especially thanks to you CM's for volunteering your time. However we are going to charge ahead as planned, I will post a request to "pass the word" on 200 (awesome advise), and would appreciate any help in other countries that I can get.
Thanks to you all, and once again all are welcome to fly...

When "Wreked" passed away awhile back, I organized a mission in the MA where we all took up his favorite plane, the 190A8, and ran a sweep pretty much across the map.  It was a memorial fight instead of a memorial flight.  We got up and then announced on 200 where we were and what we were in and invited anyone to come up and shoot us down.  There were at least 50 planes in the A8.  As we landed our kills we dedicated them to our friend "Wreked".

Like Doc said thanks for the input and support. We are going to staff this a little further tonight. Cashew loved FSO so SEA would be appropriate. Just want all who knew him to be able to participate.  I have always said that the human element to this little hobby of ours is what makes it the best. :aok

The last MA memorial flight went just fine, plenty of pilots from all 3 countries letting their fellows know what was going on.

It was the FBs for FBdhaus... And the masses policed themselves accordingly... People purposely flew with us not only out of respect but to escort for the few that did attempt to attack the flight... But it goes to show when all countries fly like this vox and text in each country is more than sufficent...

Plus at the end we all bailed together to give the red guys a thankyou present..

:airplane: I will honor your fallen companion, but if I might, I would suggest you pick out a island somewhere centrally located in the MA, (and I agree with Skuzzy and Snailman), have everyone flyinto that island, pay their respects and then be on their way to other activities. Not a island with a base on it, but a bare island, that way, no auto ack and if enough posting done, no shooting of parked aircraft paying their respects!
But, I am afraid there will be someone who doesn't get the "word" and a big shoot out will follow.
Title: Re: Memorial flight scheduled
Post by: Swoop on April 08, 2015, 07:19:23 AM
Again, the way this is done usually is a very large, mid altitude formation flying slowly in neutral territory between countries.  Not over any fields, not confined to one small area but a large mass of pilots all moving in the same direction with plenty of people on all 3 countries jumping in on ch2 every time some clueless person calls out 'mission inbound'.

A memorial flight in anything but the main arena is a pointless event.  When a funeral parade goes past people take their hats off and stand respectfully, the reason they don't have funeral parades on race tracks is there's no-one there to take their hats off and stand respectfully.

When I go, ANYONE who suggests my flight shouldn't be in the MA will get haunted.  :old:

If anyone ever actually wanted to do a 'memorial mission' for me, I would absolutely wish for it to take place in MA.
But as a combat mission - because that's what this game always was about to me. Forget that sightseeing stuff, create an epic memorial raid  :old:

Highly advise not doing the MA route. A memorial flight of 30+ goons got slaughtered by a tempest a couple years back... It ended really bad.
Title: Re: Memorial flight scheduled
Post by: Swoop on April 08, 2015, 08:12:46 AM
Wadda ya expect flying goons?

dhaus's was at 15,000ft in F4Us and it went perfectly.  Memorial flights get shot down when you don't have pilots in all 3 countries involved.  If it's organised properly and you've got enough people to get the word out in all 3 countries then it'll be fine.

Unforgiven,

I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I've fought against you and on your side in many scenarios and FSO's. I would love to participate in the memorial flight for our fallen friend, but it depends on two things: one would be how I fly with a current broken wrist and two how my frame rate handles with me going back to school on college wifi. If I can't be there I will request a squadie or few present from G3MF. :salute and Godspeed.

I can't begin to thank the AH community enough in their support and actions regarding the loss of Cashew.

Thank you to Skuzzy, Nefarious, and the entire CM staff for allowing us to pay tribute to our brother in the way we did.

Thank you to all of the squads and pilots who participated.  The response was just so overwhelming that we had to disable new flights from leaving at one point or we would never have gotten the event under way.

It was truly a site to behold. Cashew would have probably thrown a fit for us making such a fuss, but we did it because he was family to us.

Sometimes I think this game of ours is more about the people and friends we make along the way than the combat it simulates.  At least that is what my $14.95 a month says.  You can tell that by looking at my scores.   :rofl

Thanks to all for making this a success!!

I just read every reply in this thread and dadgummit guys, why don't you try and make a grown man cry ! Like Trainee said earlier, this game is more about the human element to me. Since I have joined the AH community and especially since I've joined The Unforgiven with these fine men, I will never be the same. Wife ack thinks I'm a major geek for this but she just doesn't understand ! LOL ! Swoop, it is all good my man,(your comment about the smoke) we are just honored that you came to honor our brother along with the rest of you ! I must admit, when I saw you guys pouring in to pay tribute and definitely  during Trainees speech, I was tearing up. I will never be the same now that I have joined this awesome community !
