Title: Stupid things you did or fell for when you were new
Post by: Latrobe on April 16, 2015, 11:36:24 AM
We had a funny conversation on 200 one night about our first experiences with Aces high 2. Let's continue it here! What are some things that you are somewhat embarrassed about having done or fell for when you were still new to the game (or even later on as well :)  )

In my first few sorties ever I had no idea that friendlies on the same channel as you would have a different colored icon. I thought they were enemies so I killshot myself on them for the first 10 or so sorties before I realized they weren't enemy!  :o

I remember when I was in the Claim Jumpers we did a squad bombing run. One of the squaddies was lagging behind and couldn't catch up or climb with us. Someone cracked a joke that he must be using the lead paint skin. I was an idiot and actually thought different skins changed the weight of your plane.  :o

I'm at least proud to admit I never fell for alt+f4  :P

I was mission with a decent number of heavy ponies that had just lifted for a strike on an enemy base. By the time we climbed to about 10k the group was not in as tight of a formation as we were when we lifted. A newb squeeked out on range asking how to make his plane faster to catch up to the leaders. I responded "Turn on WEP", to which he replied, "How do I do that?", to which I answered, "Press enter 3 times quickly". Shortly after a loaded p51 was falling to earth and there was quite a ruckus of laughter on range channel.

Was it mean? yes. Would I do it again given the opportunity? you bet your sweet cheeks, it was hilarious!

Driving back to spawn to land my GV. Map fully zoomed in, trying to put myself directly on the spawning arrow. And then wondering why I STILL get captured  :bhead

Finally grasping the concept of spawncamping and rolling to a totally insignificant enemy spawn during off hours. Then waiting there for 2 hours to collect the required two kills for a landing
message   :o

Mistaking the Room text channel with Range channel and trying to warn the GV guys below me of that enemy tank behind them...  :lol

Hoing a 190 in my first Me 262 sortie ever... "I have 4x30mm, I can't lose that!"
Yes, I could  :rofl

Getting a wonderful >6k kill on an enemy tank at a spawn.
Oh wait... that was no enemy tank. That was a friendly one way beyond icon range! *tower*
Still, a splendind shot I'm still proud of  :old:

Somehow, when I'm typing in the radio buffer, I end up bailed out of my plane.  I must somehow push enter 3x, but I can never really figure out how I'm accidentally doing that!  It's happened to me in both Warbirds and Aces High for me.

I came to Aces High from Fighter Ace. I went directly to the DA, as I had when I started Fighter Ace, and loaded up my favorite plane, the N1K2-J. I upped and headed towards the enemy. Looking out and down I see a 110, and think "Oh yeah, here's my first kill, what a noob to fly the 110 in a dueling arena". I head towards said 110, which turns in head on. I planned to avoid the HO, but since we were at least 2k apart I definitely wasn't planning the maneuver just yet. At about 1.5k apart I see something coming from the nose of the 110. Not thinking about rockets in any form, I don't do anything. Needless to say my very first sortie in AH ended in a rocket death to none other than Molerat. We've been buds since. =S= Molerat!

My first sortie ever was 2 seconds long as I got vulched by an La-7. I've hated the plane ever since.  ;)

I didn't discover Hat switch and the ability to look around until 2 weeks after I subscribed.

I remember back in 2008 or w/e when I was riding those 2 week trials I had climbed all the way up to 30k B17s to get obliterated from 1.5 out. I also remember my first kill(non-proxie) being a Half winged oiled and probably PW F4F limbing back to base. I dove in compressing and pinged him a few times before he augered in.... I slammed into the ocean just as i got the Kill message award :D

 :rofl

Didn't know where the check 6 was coming from for along time! Did the alt-F4 before my brain remembered what the command actually was for... Attacked friendly CV's.  Dropped supplies instead of troops a few times. Learned about weight and hills close to bases with heavy buffs taking off...

The one that really catches me (STILL) is if I attempt to type with no text buffer up, I accidentally turned off "mouse-look" using the "H" key.... Took me forever to find that command... Only JUST learned the difference between range and room... Had stall limiter on for longer than I care to admit, which led into the combat trim off at low speeds.

There's alot of subtle little things that take awhile and some involvement to learn.  :devil

Good times... good times....

I wonder how many people I've gotten with that... I think I solely fueled the lemming vTard farm when they reached the mid 70's.

What's even funnier is I got FBDred with that trick even though he's been around since the beginning. That was a fun day...

I was thought I was gonna be beast mode after flying combat flight Sim for a few years. I highly overestimated myself. I didn't know other onlinr flying games had existed. I got owned left and right for months. That was 10 years ago and for some reason I'm more addicted to this game than any powerful drug could imagine.

Long long time ago I met vDallas... the V-squad was trying to take an airfield back when tigers/Panzer 4's were the only tanks. I managed to cap about 15 of them and a few times I nailed vDallas, he would banter on the ratio and I would "Vox" myself and Banter back. My mistake was I put my name in the Vox button. Eventually Dallas got to disgruntled and tried to bomb my "Tiger" but I was only in a Panzer 4 because I had no idea how to "purchase" a tiger then.

He manages to bomb me, so I upped an Il-2 or A-20 and nailed like 5 more of his tanks, I landed and seen they had a dar next sector, the banter went back and forth, the entire time I was "Voxing" myself.

I managed to shoot down 4-5 of them by myself and the help of someone else, they didn't eventually take the Base, Dallas was impressed with my determination to defend and after messaging him through the channel, I learned I haven't spoken a word to him the entire time.

/since 1stG disbanded, I wasn't with a squad from 02-06, eventually joined the Dallas-Club until I realized he pretty much bantered everyone. He got a good laugh when I told him how I was "voxing" myself. But I never really spoke much then, I always flew solo

My first time in the ma was confusing..
Someone recruited me from the TA  and persuaded me to come to the MA and up from a field..
I tried to do this repeatedly but kept blowing up on the runway..
I got vulched 8 to 10 times before I realised what was going on..
I had got conned into coming from TA as raw vulch bait..
Lol..
It was all still very confusing for a good while...
I never knew what all the different things at the bases where..just shoot at everything thinking I was helping lol
I remember hearing over range that if you wanted the green cross for aim assistance like in the TA all you needed to do was alt f4. ..boom to windows I went..lol...suckered!
You can forget quite quickly how bewildering the ma  is when you first arrive..

snuck a A20 NOE to the very active enemy field next door. Lined up beautifully on the runway just a couple hundred feet off the deck, open bay doors, drop my bombs in a line down the runway and booked it to safety feeling that I had really accomplished something by cratering the runway. "That will put a damper on their takeoff ability, MUH HA HA HA!!!!"  found out later that evening that bombing the runway does nothing and also that I wasn't even high enough for the bombs to arm.

Didn't realize that the rockets weren't AtA missiles, kept firing rockets when I was on someone's six. Asked how to get the missiles to lock on, and fell for the Alt F4... 3 times in a row before I realized it wasn't the game bugging out, and they were just arschgeiger.

Though ammunition loadouts were rate of fire selections, and kept choosing the lowest ones, thinking it would extend firing time of a fixed amount of ammunition. It honestly didn't occur to me that they could just load more or less ammunition.

Fell for the History Channel's "zomg, T-34!" and kept wondering how in god's name they were killing me.

Moved head position back in GV gunsights, halving the range of my gunsight reticulation, under the impression it would change my FOV. I limited myself to engaging at 1600yds for no reason.

Carpet bombed fields thinking that's how it was done in WWII.

I remember the first time I drove a GV to town and started laying fire on the buildings.  The old view system was in place, and I didn't know about the zoom feature.  Apparently I had cycled through the ammo options, and was laying smoke all over town.  I had no idea since I wasn't zoomed, until someone started howling about me smoking them out.  I have to say, they weren't nice about it at all (pretty standard response around here it seems).  I didn't say anything I just  :bolt:

People would say "dont fire until you are 300 out".  Heck I could never get within 1k of them when I started!

Also, I thought the LA was a terrible plane because it did not have as many rounds of ammo as say a P-47.  In those early days I'd start firing at 1k as that was "close range" for me.  More ammo meant a better chance.

Remingt or whatever was so excited about just having enough perks to get B-29s, that he went to nap on autoclimb, he came back 2 hours later out of gas and crashed. I did the same with a 262 run once, went on autoclimb then forgot I was going to call my friend, when I came back my Me-262 was out of gas and pretty much so far off the map that I wasn't getting home.

/I switched to reading books on climb outs after that, until one day some silly person "winged" with me while on autoclimb, and he was an enemy. He got a good 3 minute video of it somewhere, I laughed, he laughed, I got shot down. LOL

I spent the first 4 weeks of that not knowing a bombsight existed.

Eagle and I had our super-noob moment when we both dove too fast in our 262ks and beautifully augered behind a set of very confuxed B-26s almost syncronized...

Crabs: LET'S GIT-UM
Eagle: RAWR!!!! WE IZ INVINCIBIBIBIBLE

(*2 seconds later)

"Ploink into water

B-26's: What just happened

I didn't find the zoom key for about a year.

Then all the players I asked said it was only for noobs and sissy's. One legend of the DA and MA told me pretty much the same thing in the DA while he was schooling me on how to fail miserably. I had been using zoom to see when he popped flaps. So it was another year before I mapped that function to my joystick. It was around that time I even bothered to learn how to bomb and shoot rockets. Heck, I even started flying the IL2 because I could find the GV after I mapped zoom.

Funny thing, if I had never mapped it, I would have never bothered with making gunsights. After all, if you change your default FoV wider than the default, anything but a dot kills your forward view.

I thanked the check six voice for almost a week.

the best Check 6 one was the time some new guy Im guessing a kid  of maybe his late teens was flying and all of a sudden a few of us hear him say "Oh no. Not you again"

When asked who he meant he stated

"This guy with a really deep voice keeps following me around saying "check 6, check 6""

Having come over from AW since the days it was on AOL I really didnt have and dumb noob things in AH.

AW was another story. There. Just like many I fell for the insta log trick when asking how to do something.

But my favorite was on my first day I upped in  a 109. Immediately I saw a pair of 38's and shot them down. All proud of myself I was thinking how I was going ot tear this game up. I proceeded on and found a B-17 and started shooting at it. When suddenly across the text buffer I saw "qg123. why are you shooting at me?"

It was then I got that sick feeling as I realized that I had been shooting down and at players on my own side

I got my n00bish stuff out of the way in Warbirds.  I was utter rubbish at MMO flight sims, but other than poor tactics and airmanship never made any particular errors based on interface or computer commands.

My very first sortie was in an M-3.  Walleye had taken a town down, and called for troops.  I rolled into town, and couldn't figure how to release them (I was in the gunners position, not driver), or use the radio.  Walleye was trying his best to motivate me, but I couldn't even ask him a question.  I was so embarrassed I towered out right in front of him.

And my first bomber sortie wasn't much better.  The country was attacking a port, so I upped B-25's.  Everyone is taking out guns and vehicles, etc.  With a great sense purpose and high level of motivation, I lined up and bombed the carrier tied up to the dock.

I was in a short term squad called the Thunder Riders back in AW. Some of you may hear me and 999000 joke on VOX or text about flying spitfires inverted behind B17's.

I first met 999 because my CO then heard a rumor that a bug existed in AW. If you fly a spit9 inverted behind a bomber it can't shoot you down. That is how I met 999000. He shot all 6 of us down as we pulled up behind his B17 inverted line abreast.

I remember one time when i first started playing i saw a 109g-14 so i went after him. That time i use to fly with a mouse and was always in the ki84. I never knew how to maneuver or work the throttle or flaps so i decided to aim straight at him and i was getting closer. Next thing he pulls left then right then up and over(Scissors then and quick up and over move and was on my 6)....I said to myself how the hell can he turn so tight and so quick lol....stupid me didn't have no idea how to work throttle or maneuver. This 109g-14 was Hartmann(i think he changed his name now). So i upped again and i started to move left to right and stuff.....lol then i get the messages don't move your controller so rapidly LMAO....I kept yanking around the plane(what you call stick stirring in the MA) LMAO.....it took me a while to get use to flying...Once i got the hang of the game slowly I began to use my imaginary skills to maneuver and fly and things got alot better. :salute :salute

I really liked how WB displayed kills immediately in the buffer. So if you taunted someone on open channel, people could see which one lived up to his words lol. It also enabled you to hunt certain players when you saw them kill your friends.

ok heres one.
When I first came here the first bird I flew was the YAK because thats what I flew in AW. First flight in the game ever I got 2 kills. But I didnt like the way it flew because I couldnt fly it like I did in AW. So I switched to the FM2 and then the 109F which I could fly similarly to the way I flew the YAK in AW

It was probably a year before I knew what ENY was or why anyone would care about it

We made it as fair as we could, us 2 vs 15 of you guys sounds like good odds :) . Actually that's incorrect. It wasn't 2v15, it's more like 1v1v15 as I try to steal all of Crabby's kills and he tries to steal mine  :devil

That's right!  I forgot about the live buffer - that was awesome.  I wished we had that here.

It would especially work for the large egos that carry around several kills and get shot down

IIRC AH that something like that until tour 30 (july  2001).

Considering we only have half the number of kills now, you might be able to lobby for it's return...  :noid

I used to fly low over friendly airfields and if I saw a plane landing or taking off, I would position myself behind them.  I would simultaneously give them a "Check Six" and fire a burst of tracers over their canopy.  About half the time, they would turn so hard they would just spin into the ground.  It would make me laugh for 5 minutes.

nice. .so if that person had kills and wanted to land them or wanted to re arm  and you caused  them to spin out off runway they would crash or  ditch or might get lucky and stop on runway. ..impressive  :bolt: hope it wasn't a perk plane

-The first sortie ever, taking a 152 (german muscle, yeah  :rock). Large scale furball, tryed to pick an la7 from a friendly's close six, but the green one just exploded... big "wow ouch damn f***" on the radio (and something else i couldnt catch back then), was sure that i shot down a friendly... i was so ashamed that i did something horribly wrong that almost instantly bailed and changed my nick.
-The very first 262 i could ever purhase... got a a kill on a goon, but couldnt hit anything else so rammed an La-7, not knowing that those 170 or so points will be lost if i cannot land my plane.
-was pretty damn close to join The Few in 2010 or '11

and a lots of other silly stupid stuff coming from the lack of language knowledge

Back in 1999 and we're all trying out the beta flying a B-26 - amazed at the graphics and gameplay for the time (I had played Warbirds in the past) and as I'm approaching an enemy airfield I ask in channel 1 if opening bomber doors was still 'O'. Someone types "No, Hitech changed it - press enter three times" so I press enter 3 times and I'm now free-falling. That someone was Animal...  :furious

But I should of known better cause enter three times was the same in Warbirds... :D

The old "spray and pray" tactic never fails  :D
Unfortunately it does, as I can testify.  My super leet, patented and trademarked "5 Point Spray Exploding Plane Technique" (apologies to Tarantino fans), where I spray rounds at my target, hit 5 random places, collide, then explode, is testament to spray and pray having some shortcomings.

Perhaps it should be "The old "spray and pray" tactic never fails to amuse."  That I can endorse.
