has anybody compared the two? aces high2 and war thunder. i see you can play war thunder for free and the graphics are great.

...and it plays like an arcade game in very small arenas.

VERY small arenas...with limited number of players (and AI to fill in the teams) per instance...and sometimes horrible waiting times for the "matchmaker" to find an instance.

and I think you have to pay to upgrade planes etc.....maybe wrong

I think it works on a tier system.

Yep. I gave it a try and couldn't even figure out how to take off. Interface is awful and kludgey. It looks pretty but it's an arcade game.
The tank version of the game however...is...um...very well done.

War thunder is for little girls who wish to begin their journey of flight Sims through simple and easy understanding of how planes fly and shoot. Recommended age is 13 and under.
AH is for big strong men who battle courageously in the mighty skies of death, with advanced tactics and ACM in a huge arena where there is no mercy. Recommended age is 18 and older.
Don't kid yourself, warthunder is a joke. I'd love to see the biggest badest pilot in warthunder even try AH, they wouldn't stand a chance.
Hell even ask krupnski about his recent success, hahaha.

Here was my impression of playing War Thunder's free version.
In the air:
You begin your experience in the hangar, going through a forced training curriculum that is pretty boring. Then, unless you pay extra, you start out in an open cockpit p-26 with 2-.30 cal machine guns, and you proceed to get slaughtered by other players in 109's and 190's in a timed, restricted headcount arena. Then you either earn your way up the ladder to a good ride, or you pay extra to get a good ride.
On the ground:
You begin your experience in the hangar, going through a forced training curriculum that is pretty boring. Then, unless you pay extra, you start out in a rusty T-24 tank that fires 45mm rounds, and you proceed to get slaughtered by other players in panzers and tigers in a timed, restricted headcount arena. Then you either earn your way up the ladder to a better tank, or you pay extra to get a good tank.
Also, the best I remember, you pick your nation ahead of time, so you restrict yourself to Russian iron or German iron, etc, versus American iron, etc.
But hey, the graphics are awesome.
Oh, and sometimes it can take 15 minutes for you to get assigned to an arena, based on your country and air/ground selection. In the free version, you can't just up a tank or a plane or jump in a gun and start fighting.

I have not played WT in a long time so my opinion may be outdated by now but...
WT is all graphics, that's it. The flight modeling is absolutely an arcade style. Maps are small (unless you play full real battles which barely anyone did) and teams are very small (8 per side I think?) I had the game for about 1-2 hours, spent 30 mins in a queue for sim battles, never got in, went to arcade just to try the game, hated the arcade flight modeling. Wasn't hard making the decision to uninstall, either sit in a queue for over an hour hoping enough people are playing to get 1 game, or play a dumbed down arcade game. Now that they have ground forces I bet the sim queues are a bit more acceptable but I still do not like the small teams.
AH is kind of the exact opposite of WT. It has dated graphics (though the new update is coming soon), has massive maps, massive servers that can hold several hundred people per side (oh how I miss the days when this would actually happen), as accurate flight modeling as you can get requiring you to know even the slightest of difference between different versions of the same plane.
WT is kind of like the training ground for new players to WW2 air combat games, and AH is where you go if you want even more of it on a much larger scale with significantly more opponents to fight.

War Thunder is fun, I've been playing it on/off since the closed beta 3+ years ago.. It definitely has it's moments. though once you've experienced a few 1v1s, or start pulling intensive maneuvers... you realize how lacking the flight model is, and how arcadey a lot of the planes feel even in Simulator Mode. Flap and drag modeling over there feel completely wrong too.. just some examples... over there the Spit mk1 totally dominates a 109E4 in every category, including climb rate. Ki43's out climb F8F Bearcats. P51's are one of the fastest accelerating planes in the game.
Everything in the game is unlockable in a reasonable amount of time for free... which is why I don't quite understand the "pay2win" complainers... Yeah it's lame, but the developers need to make money somehow. To sum it up, War Thunder is nice if you're looking for a change of pace, but if you try to play it like you're playing Aces High, you're probably going to have a bad time.
-
I heard they are short on impatient squeakers.
I played it once about 3 years ago and some angry russian player accused me of hacking when my non upgraded hurricane wooped his arse. I much prefer angry rednecks calling me a hack. They have a way with words that is much more dreamy.

The wt tanks are fun, that's it.
The wt flight model blows goats.
The most populated arcade arenas use aimbots. You can't even get the hat switch to work the way it does in 99% of flying games. You have to program a sperate button for "look back."
If ah stopped today, I would not play wt. The only way the games are similar is that they are both set around ww2.

It's considered a "Pay to Win" game because while you can engage in the grind to get new planes and upgrades, the developers made it so it's a very grindy process while making it more convenient to spend money to get what you need.

I know that it is pay to win and why, it's the people that continue to play the game and complain about it that annoy me. If you don't want to pay, suck it up and play the game while maybe even feeling like you've accomplished something along the way. If they hate pay2win games so much, they shouldn't be there to complain in the first place. :aok
-
I despise pay to play games as the playing field is only as level as the opposing players wallet versus your own. :aok

In our game a few years back I over heard a player say he left squad A for squad B because he couldn't stand listening to all of the bubbas. Had to scratch my head on that one since he was from Tennessee. But, during some of my reading forays through the WT forums, one player gave Bruv's sentiment as his reason for not playing AH. He couldn't stand all the rednecks. I guess redneck is on the PC police's OK to use list because they are not an at risk species.
Seems Aces High has too many redneck bubbas for the refined sensibilities of todays modern enlightened gamers. Then it was a bunch of farm boy rednecks who actually gave the best measure of themselves in those real airplanes. Not a bunch of well educated enlightened Ben Affleck's.

But didn't Affleck play on of those "Bubbas" in that crappy movie that shall remain nameless? :devil
Alpini, here is all you need to know about war blunder: how good could it be if they can't even figure out to make a hat switch work properly? that should tell you how serious they are about making a quality flying game.

Tanks: WT > AH
Planes: WT < AH

You know. ..I was flying a set of B17s the other day to the Rook strats at 23k I jumped in f3 mode and looked at the beautiful different shades of blue water giving it that coral reef look surrounding island's and along the coast and was thinking. ...DAMN NICE JOB HTC ! It looked so tempting I just wanted to bail and go for a swim. .but I waited until a 152 shot me down instead. .the water is way to cold HTC turn up the temp. .thank you

I agree.
-
Tried it last week . To much like a arcade game.
-
The flight models and flight modes in War Thunder are a joke, yes the graphics are very nice but the aircraft suck. However, I will say that the ground combat in WT is a lot of fun and the tank combat is great.
-
Been playing a lot of world of tanks recently. Fun game, addictive, lots of things to master.
They are really, really good at draining your pocket in teeny, tiny little drips and drabs.
That said, you can choose to pay or not.
Personally, I don't see how I'm going to get set up with a Bert the Avenger unless I shell out fifteen bucks to convert free XP - my brain would die if I had to grind the XP via the Bishop. Same with the ISU-152. Gots me an IS-2 as an XP machine for Bert and as a credit machine for my coffee in the ELC.
I still suck though.

Mayhaps because you had it set to arcade mode. Put it on simulation. The wait is long, who of us didnt grow up in the arcades standing behind other kids waiting to pump coin into a new game.
Aces high will always have the flight model. Right now war thunders graphics are killing it. The recent revamps to the damage model for all* aircraft is great. Its not the aces high standard of 0-100% dead part.
The tank game,is why i play war thunder. And again, on simulation.
If any game, gives you the option of arcade, and simulation. no matter pay, or free to play.. you choose simulation to get the best out of..anything.

fixed

On simulation mode WT is unplayable due to having no icons. A computer screen is much worse for view than real world, without an icon system you're at real disadvantage.

fixed

simple warthunder is arcadey aces high is more realistic
-
I don't play war thunder anymore but back when i did I captured this low quality video of the most epic no icon full realism fight i ever had in a sim. an endless parade of planes apeared on my six then died to my guns :)
this is probably the most epic dogfight video you will ever see in spite of the logo and low res....

That is the appeal of each. :aok
Still find it funny that some folks keep calling War Thunder, "War Blunder". So um, for a game that is such a "blunder", they sure seem have a few more players than we do.
Get over it. Each game has it's merit, their level of fun. It is hard for me to talk about and praise Aces High when I'm over there, seeing stuff like that here. And with a quick "public" search (did not log into the War Thunder forum and you don't need to be logged in to see everything here), I see a lot more bad mouthing of War Thunder here, than I see bad mouthing of Aces High there. It is embarrassing and it sure as hell doesn't help Aces High in any way. As is, it is kind of difficult to talk about Aces High even on World of Warships.

Yes, the player populations are quite different. In AH the median age of the players is somewhere near 40, even though they behave like they are 13. In WarThunder they really are 13. Men don't grow up - they just grow old.
..and old men play AH.
-
The thing that irritated me most about WT is how the plane gets better as you gain experience. Stall speeds decrease, climb rates improve, just complete crap. Once I figured that out it was over.
-
Your pilot gets better, not your plane.

thats pretty and awesome

Graphics are good.
Dare to dream: AH3 matches graphics, fixes maps, adjusts a few rules then engages in a targeted marketing campaign, boosts numbers and we reach nirvana.

That would be a sight to behold. :aok There are a few minor details in War Thunder that definitely make it stand out. Raking an enemy plane, even with 303's, sometimes you'll see vapor coming from the plane as a result, like you see sometimes in the guncam footage. Falling in behind an enemy that has an oil leak, or coolant leak, you'll see this on your windscreen. Flying through the clouds gets you water on the windscreen. If we had that all in Aces High, oh man, the immersion. :x
I know that we'll probably have those little hills dotted around the landscape like we currently do. It is also a hope of mine that when the new update hits, those won't always be so sharp. Here and there, I can understand. But I hope for more of a "rolling hills" effect for them as weol. Smooth and gradual kind of thing. :)
