Title: 12 Hours of Epic Combat.
Post by: Muzzy on May 27, 2015, 11:29:15 AM
This Saturday the Target for Today scenario presents you with an opportunity. Maybe flying scenarios or FSO hasn't been your cup of tea, but this event offers several elements that make it more appealing to all players:

1. Flight windows at the top of every hour: If you don't like the one and done or two and done format of previous events because you get knocked out early, this event will allow you to relaunch once every hour to exact revenge.

2. Short flight times: One element of scenarios and FSO's that not everyone enjoys are the comparatively longer flight times. For this event we will be using England and France map, which allows for comparatively shorter flight times to the main areas of combat. Some battles will be at longer distances, but the central part of the map will be active for most of the day, and the trip across the channel at that point is no more than 10 minutes for most birds.

3. Fly as often or as little as you like: For those of you unwilling to commit to the usual 2-4 hours that it takes to fly an event, the one hour flight windows allow you to take breaks between your flights. You do not need to fly the entire scenario if you wish. You can fly for a couple of hours, head to the (empty) MA if you want to, and come back whenever you want.

4. More historical accuracy: This event is designed to simulate combat conditions during a typical day over 1943 Europe. History buffs who want to get a more realistic experience of World War II era combat will find this event much more true to life than the daily grind of the MA. Aircraft matchups are more realistic and strategies and objectives generate the type of battles that were common for the era.

5. Team-Oriented play: Pilots will be assigned to squadrons with specific objectives. This is not the lone eagle style of combat that typifies the Main Arena. You will learn to co-operate with other pilots to get the job done.

Walk-on pilots will be assigned to a specific side and squadron, but if there's a specific ride you want to fly, you can sign up for a squadron on the forum page here: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/board,640.0.html (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/board,640.0.html)

More information on the scenario can be found here: http://www.ahevents.org/events/scenarios/current-or-next-scenario.html (http://www.ahevents.org/events/scenarios/current-or-next-scenario.html)

Anyone wishing to fly with 418 or 613 Mosquito squadrons can send me a PM on the boards. Our squadrons will be flying the most difficult and challenging missions for the event and we are always looking for good pilots.

VF-17 will be well-represented, also. Most flying fighters, but Wildcat1 will also be representin in BUFFs. We're reeel proud of him, as he's the only one of us who can bomb worth a damn.

If you want to know the take off times in your area check this out...

Aircraft will be able to be launched every hour on the hour for the duration of the scenario. Flight will open for 10 minutes and then close for 50 minutes. Below is a list of Event times by Time Zone and Game clock.

So there can be no reason NOT to make it ... If Waystin2 and a bunch of the POTW are going to do a 12 hour marathon, you should be able to make an hour of the day. BTW it is multiple lives, so don't be afraid of dying...unless you want to win then depending on which side you are on. RAF going to decimate!!!

For a more detailed look into how it is going to look and what you need to do to register http://www.ahevents.org/events/scenarios/current-or-next-scenario.html (http://www.ahevents.org/events/scenarios/current-or-next-scenario.html)

To the CMs and everyone else that helped put this together; . . . . what can I say except THANK YOU.

a special ending point, for me, was the way the clouds started to change color at the very end, as the sun was setting. It was relaxing. Like that feeling you have at the end of the day, when and your wife/girlfriend  are enjoying a drink at sunset.

I thought the overall visual was very conducive to a gentle slowdown of the adrenaline and emotion experienced, at the end of a 12 scenario.

My compliments, nice touch.  :aok

So, context is a good thing.  "Gawd my fingers are killing me and my butt is numb!!"  Causes a great many lifted eyebrows unless one understands the grip of a joystick and throttle while sitting for 12 hours.

Don't ask, but ya, had to explain the comment while walking down the hall.

Well, against all the odds, I actually stayed the whole course!  Something kept me going for "just one more" until I finally thought, "well, I've come this far, might as well continue!"  Of course I hadn't factored in RTBing and landing so it was about another half-hour after the event ended before I could finally say, "Right, I'm off to bed!" and leave, making my way upstairs as it was getting light outside.  At least on that last run I finally got the manual calibration right and hit a few targets!  :D

Thanks to Nef and ROC, and everyone involved, for making this a fantastic event!       :salute

Randy, we did have another run to Paris in the last window, this time with P38 escorts all the way, and managed to inflict some damage to the strats this time with minimum opposition.  :D  Thanks for letting me ride with you on your RTB from Paris after I was shot down before I could drop any bombs.  I think that was the longest time I spent not actually in the pilot's seat myself.  I had very little time on the ground, usually landing minutes before taking off again.   :aok

One of the highlights came during the attacks on Antwerp. Hear over Axis Command teamspeak that the 49ers(110s) were in their chutes running around Antwerp looking for the bar. Little things like that made the event special.  :lol

Greatest event ever that I was been a part of it. The Axis forces always outnumbered and always at a lower altitude than the Allies managed to overcome the obstacles and prevail.

I honestly was impressed over and over at how well the Allies kept there E and did what was needed....

The only reason I got that many was my group was also flying awesome...great communication.....

What a blast!  Don't you actually feel sorry for those who missed this?  I do.

That last buff mission to Paris, I'm in my trusty A5, Axis has made several slashing attacks on the buffs and we've taken some out, but our numbers are dwindling.  You escorts did really good and pushed me away to the south, so I flew out in front of the buffs for ONE MORE PASS.  As I spot the buffs and check my clipboard map, yes, I am the last one left, the sole attacker in a sea of red.  I got decent hits on a few buffs as........the entire Allied fighter group drops in..........hehehehehe.  Thank goodness for the roll rate of the 190A5, a beautiful bird if there ever was one.  I end up on the deck, flying through the trees trying to shake a P47 who is just 400 off my 6, and he's getting hits.  I'm screaming like a girl as I near my base and the guys in guns open up on him, he gets another hard hit and kills my engine.  One last snap roll gets him out of position, I cross control that mutha like never before, scrubbing all the speed I can, gear down, bouncing along the grass..............coasting, coasting (Where's that P47?)  and..........come..........to ..............a...........sto p...........in........the.... ............HANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WooooooHooooooooooooooooooooo oooooo what a rush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There has never been a better day of flying in Aces High.   We must do this again.

12 hours of flying.  12 hours of strategy. 12 hours of staying with your squaddies and flying against impossible odds and just pushing, pushing, and pushing.

13 kills for me, more than enough.

:salute Thank you all very much.

Well, I can't put you in for a citation as I was an Allied CO, but I'd give you the Iron Cross 1st Class for that landing.  :salute

So....questions:  Did the Luftwaffe notice the various confusion tactics we used or was everything so confusing anyway that it was all lost in the maelstrom?

was crazy fun...12 kills for me...... not to bad considering how well the Allies were flying......

I honestly was impressed over and over at how well the Allies kept there E and did what was needed....

I was a bit underwhelmed with my performance over the course of the day, but very much what Ink said.

More than once I'd try to pull the Allies low, or take them out of position, but very rarely did it work.  Damn that Redtails movie for popularizing good escort tactics!

I believe around the 7:00 or 8:00 Eastern launch window, some friendlies and I got the joy of finding a set of B17s split off from a group, with 2 P47s hovering over it.  Between the defensive turns of the B17s and the 2 jugs always being exactly where they needed to be, they were putting on an escorting clinic.  The jugs kept at least 4 committed 190s off those buffs until we finally gave up because we were consistently falling back, and turned back for the set that was straggling behind them.

On review of the film, it turned out to be LilMak and a name I didn't recognize.

I would like to say I take back everything bad I muttered under my breath about you guys during that sortie, I am sure you guys and everyone you know are fine people. ;)  Dear lord though, that was the most frustratingly well executed opposition I have encountered in a long time.  Well done both of you!

Having worked with Dantoo in the past I knew he had planned every approach and every response we could of made. The first bomb run did catch us out of position and you got a pass on 92.

I did not fall for the mass Spitfire south of Antwerp, although I did send The Fis and JG11 into the fray. Your first run into Atwerp was hit right at the target. Your second run into Antwerp was not met before the target as we launched a silly counter attack for fun.

What did you think when you saw FW-190s over England?

We did have a massive launch at the top of the hour and chased those bombers home and killed them ALL.

First run to Paris..... Beat you up pretty bad.

Then as Beefcake wrote you tunred around. I knew you had time to hit Paris again and I had told 3 Squads to hang back. But, they were all antsy and ready to kill.  So after the big fight we had NO fighters left to defend Paris on that last minute run.

I remember that Wiley. It was an epic defense of Bortas after he turned from Paris. Myself and Pollock1 (with me the whole 12 hours) decided we were going to get at least one formation of heavies home. You guys were slick and almost pulled us apart. At one point, I thought you guys had given up and was headed home as fuel was getting critical. We failed to get that group home. Evidently he discoed and was heading over the channel in a direction we just could follow ow our tanks would run dry. Last I saw him he had 2 or 3 German planes finally closing on him and there was nothing we could do.

Ahh.  When I last saw you guys, I thought we'd all pulled off, but perhaps it was just me and a couple others.  The set of 17s 4.5k behind was a much easier target.  Doesn't surprise me at all that some of us were more persistent and stuck with them.

Definitely the most fun I've ever had in a Scenario.

It was epic. I had a great time.

I had given up earlier and was headed home. Pollock was still with him and I was offset way right. He said you guys were still trying and I came screaming in from 3oclock from the formation. I pushed the close 190 off and I think that's when you guys gave up and went after the trailer. It might not have been your crew who finally took him down. We just couldn't defend the other set you guys went after. We simply didn't have the fuel to turn back and cover him too. Then Bortas went rouge headed west northwest and we couldn't stay with him anymore.
