Title: Lots of late war planes?
Post by: Wolf on June 11, 2016, 10:33:16 AM
Getting back into AH has been fun - like riding a bike I guess. I have a question - where did all of the early and mid war planes go? It seems that most of the planes in the MA are late war monsters. I can adapt, just miss seeing the wide assortment of different kinds of aircraft.

One of my favorite things about the rolling plane set in WBs. It was so fun to fight 109Es in Spit Is and Zekes in F4F-3s.

Most people hate to lose, so typically will choose the best plane for the job.
The population is much lower these days and seems to have a higher concentration of experienced players than it did years ago. This makes it more difficult to succeed in EW and MW planes now. Back when there were hundreds of noobs online, a modestly skilled player could more easily score kills in a lower tier ride.

.... what he said.
Also, the game play has changed to more of a "kill count" type play instead of "fighting" type play. HOs and picks are the norm now.

The gang squad has prevailed, which leads to players using faster planes to escape, which leads to players using faster planes to catch them.
I wish players wouldn't have to team up so much on 1 guy, but that's just the nature of nature.

I fly the pony because I pretend to be one of the flying tigers. when I used to fly the spit9 or the zeke people used to whine because I would kill them. only reason I cant fly the german planes is because I cant see out of them. I already suck as it is. my other favorite plane was the il2. lots of kills with it. used to fly the c205 a lot but I got bored for some reason.

If I ever decided to come back (doubt it), the Ki-61 would still be my main ride. However, there is nothing more exhilarating than rolling an La7 at a vulched field and downing multiple cons per sortie.

I fly the Pony because it sucks and......when I fly the Dora I wreck everyone. Just trying to be fair.
I am a Dora driver at heart. Great guns. Fast as hell. Climbs like a banshee. WEP like a girl with implants. Woot!
Pony? Overrated POS that has no power but can go fast because it is slick...and has range. Truly one of the most pathetic planes ever modeled. Maybe someday I will be like BigR in it....but I kinda doubt it.

Didn't have the time for a genuine chart yet, but...
In 2010 EW fighters (=fighters available non-perked in the EW arena) had a share of 7.91% of all kills&deaths in the LWarenas In the first four month of 2016, this share had dropped to 4.66%, that's about 41% less.

Rolling plane set is what also helped kill Warbirds. Even HiTech admits it was a mistake to introduce that into WB, which is why we'll never have a RPS in AH.

The pony is very capable of fighting but 99.8% choose to run instead of fight or extend i should say because its easier to make excuses why you could not fight it truly dont matter if you die you always learn something from a fight.

Make the game free for those who would use rolling plane sets, and paid for those who would want to fly any plane at any time!

The new Ki-61 is equipped with a much more restricted rear view unfortunately.
Theres a spot that you can peek through if ya move your views round a bit. Its still not as good as it use to be your rite. They did a good job on it. Looks very nice. The only thing that kept me from flying it more was how dated it looked. I'll prolly give it a good thrashing when AH 3 replaces 2.

Lusche/Snailman's chart shows only a slight reduction.
There may be just less planes per sector than before.
My personal opinion is that people fly the uber rides to be able to get to a kill first. It is more about beating the green guy than killing the red guy.
I got turned on to the full hangar lists after having a great time in FSO with C.202s versus P-40Es.
I still try to up EW birds when I can. After a few times dying, it's back to the Yak-9 o' death.

lusche, can you check MW rides share of kills. I suspect they took a bigger hit - EW planes were always rare.
I try to keep the MW roster in the picture with Mossie VI, F6F, and P47D11/2 5. Life is not easy with the abundance of La7S, Yak3s and that every plane you meet is the lattest model: 109k4, 190D, p47m. We are lucky that spit 14 is so difficult to fly.

The rolling plane set was the beginning of the end at War Birds. And Hitech would know as it was his game as well.
Hitech has the right to believe that. I disagree.
The RPS was great. What killed WBs was the ego of Wild Bill. He fired all the talent, banned players for silly affronts, and lost a TON or market share to a game people considered more dynamic: Aces High.
We are seeing numbers drop here as well. WBs had an RPS and lost players. AH has no RPS and is losing players. Why? The economy? Demographics? In any case it isn't the fault of a Rolling Plane Set.

That still doesn't make it a good idea. The rolling plane set would cause hoards like you wouldn't believe. Plus there only 3 teams, so that limits a lot of planes. The majoirty of players would play on the allies, thus causing huge side discrepancies. It's just not feasible.

There is really no incentive to fly anything other than Late War monsters. If HTC revamped the ENY scale to 100, the large perk point bonuses might help to encourage players to get out of their comfort zone for a few minutes.

For once, we agree. I've always flown the P-51 because it's what I consider the best and most versatile fighter aircraft to come out of WW2. (not looking for the inevitable argument here, just a fact). Early on, I tried to get time in every aircraft. As time progressed, I did tours of "a kill in every aircraft" or just Attack, or whatever. Thing is, after a good long while I became bored with the relentless hamster cage of being picked, or tag-teamed... every-freeking-time. It just really got old. So, these days I do what I do, and I don't get disappointed much. I don't fly in an extremely cautious manner at altitude because it's the mostest bestust funnest. Realistic simulation has a lot to do with it. But, I also do it because being picked & gang-tarded is NOT fun in a major way. Especially when you've earned a couple of kills and some trash talking cherry picker zooms in, kills you then brags about their unique badassery. Further, I also get a bit of a warm-fuzzy knowing I am spending my time denying those same pickers their opportunity to operate freely. Why, just last night I ran into a P-38 WAY down around 20k who immediately turned around and ran straight back home as soon as it was in icon range. Kudo's to that pair of Pony's though, they never quite managed to get over me but, at least they tried.
IMHO, HTC ought to wipe all perks, then set up a perk system in which ALL late war monsters get their fair share of "Gotta-earn-it", in such a way that it sticks. For example, the Pony ~IS~ a problem given the historical stats. IMO it's not perked because of the potential cry-baby response. And this routine of saving up 20K friggin perks! That promotes some of the lamest bs in the game. Obviously, we're dealing with the insta-gratification mindset and, well a whole segment of the AH population would likely suffer a simultaneous aneurysm if ~earning~ anything actually became standard.
I don't believe there's an easy answer. Maybe they could just start charging.... like, "For only $20 you get a PonyD and 10 rides in it a tour". How fun would THAT be??? Shootin down someones hard earned cash! Oh, the glory! :joystick:

The games community base has a huge pool of vets. Late war rides are necessary to survive. Unlike the old days you have almost a 50/50 chance of running into someone that has been playing this game for over 10 years. A p40b isn't going to cut it..

Not entirely true.
Some mid-war planes are good enough, and can both challenges and kills at the same time.
I normally do one or two flights with low ENY birds every month, and the rest with ENY15+ planes.

I know and it's a fact that runners are not getting the best fun out of this flight sim. I love to dogfight with other players. I love stall fighting where both our planes are doing ACM's and they are inches away from each other. That's why I fly, it's breath taking when you stall fight another great stick. So you P-51 and 190d guys that keeps running are really missing the real fun of this flight sim.

the issue start a from the fact that very many of these vets are in the lattest fighters themselves.

This right here is a large part of why I alt monkey. Being able to climb does not mean you get a free pass into my airspace. It's the best when they fight, but the vast majority you find 20k+ immediately dive out, even if you're directly below them hanging on your prop.
The main thing I like though is helping the friendlies on the deck by not giving the enemy alt monkeys free reign on them. It's music to my ears when I hear on range, "High <bandit>, he's 15k+" and I am in position to descend upon him.
Wiley.

we have to fly LW planes. because the veteran players in this game have tender egos. they dont want to have to fight and maybe die. so they either fly uber rides and run at the first sign of a fight and/or if they are in EW rides they are right in the middle of the sea of red in the safety of numbers scavenging for kills. they set the example and the player base learns that and now we have a game full of people who would rather run and do circles in their ack waiting for friends, who never fly away from their little horde monkey buddies and who claim to be fighters but arent, theyre gang, run and hide players.

Guilty
I fly late war monsters.
ME262, TA152, Dora.
I used to think I flew them because they were the best at what I choose to do. Fly high and intercept buffs, very fun for me, very enjoyable. Now that I have read this thread I realize it is because I just suck and need them to keep my ego from being bruised. I apologize for my stupidity. Yesterday I went hunting in an A5 as penance and landed 9 kills :)
Here's the thing, you gents can do all the arm chair psychoanalyses you want but despite the fact that you are all geniuses, you may not have actually figured out what motivates the folks you heap your hate and disdain upon.

If you want to fight up high and not have the enemy fighter run away the second he sees you, take up a TU2.
They only dive away 28k worth of altitude to hide in ack AFTER you deliver pepperidge to thier plane.

Well, defending seems reasonable given the constant attacks by people on the boards and channels about the people who aren't flying whatever it is they want them to fly however they want them to fly it.

yep, but you ganger runner hiders are the same ones who complain about the game dying. then 2 seconds later youre the 6th plane diving on a half plane. then crying about no fights. or the 6th one into a gangbang but the 1st one to run from 1v1s. theres a reason people think lowly of these players.

Yep. And you TnB chest thumpers are the same ones who complain about the game dying. Then 2 seconds later you're whining because the guy in the dora isn't stallfighting with your Spit16, then crying about no fights. Or you're concentrating on one plane in a furball and whining about everybody not staying out of "your fight" and demanding the enemy come at you one at a time like you're in a Chuck Norris movie. There's a reason people think lowly of these players.

I can't see HTC dying because of the way any specific group plays the game. Really, seem's like HTC would take direct action if such were the case. Further, I've heard not one peep out of HTC to indicate they're in a dire situation. Word from HTC on such things is..... <crickets>
I reckon style-of-play has little or nothing to do with any mass exodus that may (or may not) have happened in AH. The game just hasn't changed that much, not in a very long time. What I do know, is AH is old as MMOG's go and the attention span of your average modern gamer is equivalent to the average Goldfish. Take that and combine it with the fact that AH is NOT a shooty-bang-fast-die-go-again console game and well... you've got a more realistic target to blame, than someone who doesn't play the game THE WAY YOU WANT THEM TO!
HTC is obviously addressing the issue. There's hope on the horizon. This might all work out great, it might not. However, insulting people for doing what they pay HTC to do, then accusing them of killing the game is just silly <<<(that's the PC version, use your imagination). So stop, you aren't helping. :old:

I've been having tons of fun in the F-4F, the most I've had in a while. It's my new favorite plane. I can't wait till it's remodeled. The achievement made me do it.
Pilots come in for the easy kill and do stupid stuff around me, I shoot them down.
You don't need a late war monster to have fun in Lw arena.

coy wiley. make up whatever you want i guess. none of that is true of me. not one bit of it. i never expect any runner to fight, what gets me is when they run and wait for the guy to get into a fight, then bravely come back just raring to fight. we know that each plane has a certain style, each plane CAN fight. you dont want to turn fight a 190 vs spit16, i get it. they need to have E and maybe extend a bit. but thats not what happens. the 190 just keeps extending until he finds some little helpers or just outright hides in ack and of course he tries to reengage when you turn away. or people sit at the end of the runway vulching until they get bounced then run like the wind. they are willing to fight as long as the other guy cant do crap abt it. but as soon as the fight slaps them in the face, all the sudden they're low fuel, low ammo, gotta go now! these are veteran players doing this sissy bit. veteran means theyve been around longer than non vets, which means they have influenced the game play more than the non vets. and the game becomes what it is. then you see that there are 20 LW birds for every 1 EW bird. because you have to fly LW to compete with the veteran ganger runner hiders.

And there's plenty of people that fly LW stuff that your posts don't apply to as well. And that's another VooduVee griping on 200 all the time about getting picked and HOed and people running? My bad.
Some people fly LW planes to run, some people fly LW planes to chase. That we at least agree on.
Wiley.

youre leaving out all context and blanketing any thing i say as an unreasonable 200 gripe. typical.

0-18,000 feet in 90 seconds...and it can also be used for SAM suppression. You should see if it works on those radar-aimed (or is it laser?) puffy ack guns the CVs have. :rofl

Thanks for the replies. I used to fly midwar planes exclusively, but was taken aback at how many late war planes are in the arena now. Flew the c205 for a good part of this tour, but it just can't compete with a lot of the dogpiling fights that seem to be present now.
Still fun as ever. It gave me some good practice flying the Ta 152 over the weekend. Now that's an interesting plane to learn to fly. If I could just master shooting the guns on that thing. I'm getting better at it. What a monster!

Careful, it's addictive. Almost as bad as the 109K once you figure the guns out on both of them.
When you get used to making snapshots with 2x20mm and 1x30mm, everything else feels like rubber bullets.

That TA152 is the only plane I have to force myself not to fly or I would be in it every fight. Wiley is right, it's addictive, it's far from perfect but once mastered............well i don't know because I sure have not mastered it yet. Hands down the best airplane in the game for killing 30k or above buffs.
If flying is dancing then this plane is a ballerina. You cannot throw her around. Timing, smoothness, gentle hand on the stick, use the throttle - a lot, and anticipate. The guns are deadly. Put the bullet stream where your enemy will cross, fire for 2 seconds and things go BLAMMO! No damaged aircraft rtb'n, no enemy reversing to get a shot on you, no overshoots because you only hurt him, THEY ARE JUST DEAD.
I'm a Knight. I have Tuesdays off work so I fly most of the day. What is your callsign Wolf?
