Title: Game freezing during combat
Post by: AusMedic on September 17, 2016, 05:38:55 PM
Has anyone else had the issue of the game totally freezing during a fight and then not being able to unfreeze it and have to restart the game?

lots and lots of micro freezes.  last 1 second.

Yesterday I was having a lot of crashes like you describe.  Updated my graphics drivers and all seems good on that front now.

Considering the sound card drivers are much older than Windows 10, I would suspect those.

You might want to try the DX9 version of the game, but I would really consider updating those sound card drivers.

It seems to me that it is more important now, than every before, to have any sound device that are not using disabled. At least for Windows 10.

Myself and squadmates have same issue. Didn't start happening until the last update.  Not able to tie to a specific event but does seem to most often occur during a snap view change.

Posted this in the DX11 Open Beta bug thread.... but it got closed.

HiTech,

Do you know what is causing the micro-freeze's?  Just started in this last update....

You can see it in the video below (saved a time stamp link..if it doesnt work, then go to 37:50 and watch..you can see the pause at 37:55ish)

Same here.  LOTS of folks talking about it in game, and all say it started after the "go live" patch.

The micro freezes have been reported by at least a dozen players in the forums, maybe more. A Scca pointed out LOTS of players have commented on it in the game. It seems to be mentioned by someone every few minutes in he game. Yet the only responses from tech support that I have seen suggests that a specific player update his sound card drivers and telling another how to address a  variance delay.

There appears to be no ecognition that this is a general problem involving many players all with different operating systems, graphics and sound systems, etc. It's hard to believe that it's due in every case or even most case to some specific hardware or system configuration (e.g. outdated sound card drivers) issue. As has been pointed out, this was not an issue for so many in beta. Now it suddenly appears overnight at the same time for lots of players. I know I made no changes to my system and I doubt that most of the others seeing the issue did either. It's hard to accept that it's not an issue with the game itself.

I'm sorry to sound like a complainer Because I like AH3 and want to see it succeed.

This is all normal with new versions guys. Just enjoy the game!

Things like this are difficult to isolate as we cannot duplicate it on any of our systems.  Still trying.

It started doing the freeze down to 1-2 fps since the last 2 updates to the game. It seems to happen when anything comes into icon range. I do not get a system crash just a pause with sound still playing then a jerky restart of the action. Happens more when gunning on ships then flying.

Does it happen with the DX9 version of the game?

I have never run the DX9 version so I can not answer that question... I am running on Windows 10 with nvidia 730 with latest drivers. Framerates run between 45 and 60 most of the time.

Sometimes the barrels of the 8in guns are gone. I also have had the frame drop on several occasions right after the gun flash of the 8in guns. If that might help.

An NVidia 730 card is going to struggle to keep up in AH3.  Not much we can do about that.  It is slightly slower than the minimum required 9800GTX.

I'm curious if the new LDA (linked-display adaptor) mode of Windows 10 might be able to use that card along side of a better one, rather than use SLI. I have heard that Microsoft has it sorted out now, but I don't know if the game itself has to be programmed for it? I started to test for it last night, but Nvidia demanded I close too many programs, so I didn't.

I can't even connect it to any specific event in the game. It's just every few minutes a 1 second freeze. Fortunately, during combat I only had it once, faceplanted my Hurri D because of it.
I may occasionally see it in other bombers too, at least I see their drones jumping back and forth on occasion.

I don't have widows 10 but did discover there was a driver update for my sounblaster Z. I installed it and played for half an hour with no micro-freezes. I'm not entirely sure it's a fix but I was getting them every 10 minutes or so before so I'm hopeful.

is it anything to do with the skins downloading?

I haven't had it happen in DX11 version since this last patch and that is the only thing I have changed ticking the skin download in background?

Not skins related.  We disabled download/show skins etc. and freeze was still happening.  Did run the DX9 version and didn't have the freeze - not ideal.

Same freeze (if you haven't watched the video I linked earlier, you can see it there) issue...running a 980ti card at 120fps (120hz monitor/TV) with graphics maxed.

Nothing changed on my system but the V1 (go live) release update.  Was NOT a problem prior, is a problem now.  Been lucky enough to not hit the ground yet...but have missed several shots/died due to it :(

I was getting microfreezes in the last couple of days.  I changed em to none and that stopped the microfreezes.

my only droping of framerate and micro freezing is occurring during auto ack firing on both friendly and enemy fields, especially large fields. Usaully I maintain a solid 59 fr, then it will suddenly drop quickly down to 12 fr approaching fields, and then recover to 59 fr, as I fly away.

Listed according to PassMark the 730 and 9800 are even.  http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/mid_range_gpus.html (http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/mid_range_gpus.html)

You cannot go by one benchmark.  It is highly limited in scope.

Since the update, I've endured the micro-freezes.  But also, total freeze requiring a reboot of the pc.  Twice in the past 15 minutes.

Benchmarks are just for getting a rough idea about where you're at. The Passmark list is good for that because it lists about every card ever having been on the market.

As for the GT 730 and 9800 GTX+ being even, the chart doesn't tell what the score consists of. Knowing that the GT series are meant for multimedia and the GTX series are aimed more or less for gaming it's obvious that the sub-scores of the various tests included in the benchmark may vary a lot despite the total being equal.

As a rule of thumb I wouldn't consider any card on the Passmark mid range list AH3 compliant. Agreed, the 9800 GTX is on top of that list, but as has been said it's the baseline card. That means mostly single digit FPS, reaching playable rates only in the open sky with no clouds or enemies around. In my opinion the AH3 capable cards are among the top 200 in http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html (http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html), again read with caution, seeking more details about the cards that look promising for your budget.

Initially after reset two days ago and patch, no freezes.

Yesterday, freezes aplenty.

Getting frustrated in that we did NOT see this in the beta.

I have now since upgraded to an EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SSC GAMING ACX 2.0+  with this card I am running steady 60fps with no drops in framerates with most details turned all the way up, but now have a worse problem then drops in framerate.

Uninstalled all previous drivers for the 730 card and installed the latest drivers from EVGA. Now instead of frames dropping to 1 or 2 it now crashes to desktop. This crash has always happen after a long period of time firing the 8 inch guns. I have not had this happen while flying only using the large guns never in the other guns on the ships. When the program freezes it still shows 60fps at lockup with sound still running. This holds for about 5 seconds then CTD.

It reminded me of the OLD days when a game had a problem releasing memory and it ran out, and the machine locked up. But now at least you don’t get, the Blue Screen of Death.

The machine has 16 Gigs of DDR4 memory so if this is the problem, it would be like calling the hole in the Titanic a leak.

I don't know how to determine things like that, but I have noticed that the problem seems to build the longer the game runs.

If you get a crash to the desktop, we need the event information from the crash dialog panel.  In particular, the offset address.
