Title: Game goes into windowed mode
Post by: BowHTR on October 03, 2016, 02:47:45 PM
After I get the game running, after about 30 seconds, the game will go into windowed mode and no longer be full screen. This is the first time this has happened. Only change is that I got a new monitor today.

DxDiag is attached if needed.

EDIT: After more testing, i can alt+tab back into the game and then it goes back to windowed view after 3 seconds or so. I can't move the window, as it still acts like its in full screen mode.

At a guess I would premise that the game is still trying to use your old monitor? Your DXdiag lists two monitors.

Maybe you can select the other display? Just thinking there may be some confusion between game and OS as to which monitor is the primary display.

So, where mine is asking to choose a video card it is also a display option.

That's what I was thinking as well. My old primary monitor is now my secondary monitor.  I made sure that the new monitor was set as primary display and also restarted the system. Trying a fresh install now to see if maybe that doesn't fix it. Will update after I try that.

Well, you might have just deleted video.cfg, or something.

Or, go into the game settings and select the native resolution of the new monitor.  As that has been set, you either remove the "video8.cfg" file from the "settings" folder, or go into the game video settings and select the native resolution for the new monitor.

I changed the video settings to the new resolution when I first started the game. I also tried removing video8 and then started the game and still getting the same results.

From the image it is acting like it is running the game at 1920x1080 on the new monitor which is smaller than the native resolution.  The frame is not really a windowed frame.

What happens when you remove the secondary monitor from the equation?

What is the native desktop resolution?  That is what the game will try to default to.

The native of the primary monitor (new) is 1920x1080. Native for the secondary monitor is 1680x1050.

Had my numbers backwards.  It looks like it is running in 1680x1050 resolution on the 1920x1080 monitor.

When you remove the second monitor, what happens?  You will need to remove the "video8.cfg" file from the "settings" folder before starting the game.

Removed the second monitor, removed video8, started game, checked video settings to ensure it was the native resolution, went into game, same results.

Did you install over the top of the existing game, or rename the original "settings" folder?  Exactly what did you do?

I am trying to come up with the circumstances which would allow duplication of this issue.

Uninstalled the game, then did a fresh download and install. Allowed it to convert AHII settings to AHIII. Pasted over the skins, squads, and motd folders from the version I just uninstalled. Launch game. Opened the video settings, set everything to the correct setting (the resolution was already correct). Went online, everything was good.

Well, I am glad you are working, but I really would have liked to have gotten a hold of that old "settings" folder.

Here's the one that was causing problems. I made a copy of it just in case.

Awesome!

Now, I  noted in your original video settings file it says the game was set to 1920x1080.  That matches what I suspected, but I would like for you to try this;  Extract the "video8.cfg" file from that ZIP file and place it in your new "settings" folder.

I want to see if that duplicates the issue you had.

Tried putting the old video8 file back in my settings folder and everything worked as it should. I tried disabling my new monitor and used my old monitor, reloaded the game, change my video settings for the old monitor, went into the game. No problems. Enabled the new monitor, loaded game, set the correct settings in video setting, entered game, no problems. I cant seem to duplicate it now.

Is there a chance you are running the DX9 version of the game, instead of the DX11 version?  We changed the default back to DX9 in a recent update, but if you had an older installation, it would have been pointing to the DX11 version.

Only been running DX11 since the full release. Tested with both during beta.

Some fill in on this as I have experienced this as well (last time was last night)...

First time I saw it was when I went to 120hz on my refresh rate ...came up in a windowed "full screen" mode as described above.
Setting it back to 60hz fixed it.  Wasn't happy, and kept fiddling with it.   Dx9 worked at 120hz, Dx11 did not.  Having it open on my second monitor at 60hz worked, having it open on my primary 120hz screen at 120hz did not.

Reinstalled game, stuck back in my settings folder. Worked as advertised.

Went to try 4k again after the updates...so 3840 x 2160 at 60hz. No issues.  Wanted to go back to 120hz at 1080p and could not make it work again. Reinstalled, still no workie...removed the video8 fiel, ensured everything was set...still no workie...offset windowed mode overlapping onto second monitor.  Removed second monitor, no change.

I'm currently flying at 4k rez, 60hz. Game looks great, but for the big events I would like the extra Horsepower of the card to be able to keep up with all the aircraft...and would like to be at 120hz.  Just haven't messed with it again to try to make it work.

Skuzzy, I'm not against use of team viewer if you want to have a go at it.
