My wife and I went to an estate auction today. I did warn her in advance that the reason I wanted to go to this auction is they listed “Aviation memorabilia” in the online ad… (In my defense, I told her that after the auction, I would take her out to lunch, and then clothes shipping in Toledo.)
At the auction I picked up these two items. An unknown aircraft rudder, and a set of 20 ribs from an from an unknown aircraft wing. I have to tell you that these were the most inexpensive aircraft items that I have ever purchased!... There were no other bidders who were seriously interested in these parts. In fact, at one point, I was looking at the rudder and an elderly lady, (Think Grandma Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies) asked me, “Is that the tail from an airplane?” When I responded, “Yes it is”, she replied, “Why on earth would anyone have one of those?” When I said, “I already have one, And, I’m hoping to get this one too!”… …She pursed her lips and gave me the long hard look that said, "That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard"…
Don’t ask me how I know that look, but believe me, I do!

Anyways, the rudder is metal framed and fabric covered, 51.5 inches tall, 20 inches wide without the crudely added trim tab, and 4 inches thick. Any ideas what it may be from?

We need someone thing for scale in the photo please. A 1 foot ruler or 3 foot yard stick would be great.

Nope not listed: http://misc.thefullwiki.org/Federation_starship_registries_%2880000-80999%29#80500

Interesting read on N numbers, http://www.aahs-online.org/articles/N-number.php
The C in the number is for commercial or mail planes.

Thank you! I did not know that.

Thought I had it. Same shape as the Ercoupe twin tailed private aircraft. But the dimensions don't match up her this drawing. It was only 39" tall.

I think it might be an early model Globe Swift (fabric covered rudder rather than aluminum).

Besides the "C", the N80536 matches the directory of Globe Swift tail numbers. Apparently the "C" doesn't matter, because N80518 is listed as "being in the Smithsonian", and clearly from the picture we can see it is NC80518. I am 95% certain you have the rudder of a Globe Swift!

I think you are right! Thank you very much! I’m not sure how I’ll display it yet. I may leave it as is, or remove most of the fabric, leaving the Aircraft registration numbers.
My garage is turning into an aircraft parts museum. I also have a Beech 18 rudder, Horizontal stabilizer from a Sikorsky Sea King helicopter, a valve cover from a Rolls Royce Griffon engine, an At-6 main wheel made into a table, DC3 cowlings with nose art painted on them, 6 propellers, and other aviation items.
I really appreciate your help identifying this rudder! I was tickled to get it at an auction for $30.

The important point may be who the plane's owner was the rudder came from.

Capt. D."Duck" Underglas ?

The Globe Swift has a counter-balance and this one does not.

This is from a Globe Swift 1 or 1a. Same shape, tail number matches the directory. Move along now.
The 1b and later models do have a different shaped rudder. Here is another example of the 1a

Get another similar rudder and make a saloon style double swing door

Capt. D."Duck" Underglas ?
That is an F-16 canopy. The previous owner had it in his yard with a concrete duck under it, hence the call sign “Duck Undreglas”. Although I was not really interested in it, I bought it at a recent auction when nobody else would bid on it. I’ve since sold it on eBay, and am waiting for the buyer to pick it up.
Here is a link to the post when I bought it: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,381554.msg5080807.html#msg5080807 (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,381554.msg5080807.html#msg5080807)

You need one of these mounted on your ceiling
