Title: Canada puts tender notice out for it's new Navy ships...

From CBC http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/frigate-replacement-competition-1.3812705 The federal cabinet has given the green light to release a long-anticipated request for proposals for an off-the-shelf warship design and combat systems. Pre-qualified defence companies are expected to receive their packages on Thursday and the government is anticipated to follow up with a technical briefing to explain the details to the public. The bidders have until April 27 to submit their plans to Irving Shipbuilding Inc., which was selected in 2015 as the prime contractor. The Halifax-based company is the federal government's go-to yard for combat ships under the National Shipbuilding Strategy.
Bidders include:

If they switch from F-35s to some more super hornets instead, they ought to save enough for an extra ship or three :)
Seriously, Canada isn't into the expeditionary power projection business, so they need a multi-role interceptor far more than they need a single engine front-aspect stealthy strike platform that can't carry half the missiles an F-18 can. An F-18 with helmet mounted display, new AESA radar, IRST, and amraams on all pylons, is a hell of an air defense platform. Not nearly as fast as a slick new-build F-15 with -229s, but when the russkies come over the pole they'll be cleaning off the wings as soon as they get to altitude anyhow, so may as well go for max loadout from the start.
IIRC, a superhornet can carry about 10 AMRAAMS. USAF F-15s didn't come with the outboard missile pylons installed so they're limited to 8, however the latest F-15 offering has new air defense pylon options that will let it carry 12-14 IIRC. Either new-build F-18s or F-15s for the same price as a JSF, the training transition is trivial/nonexistent, and existing supply chains still work.
If you're not invading anyone, don't need JSF. Canada has already pulled out of current NATO/US led ops, seems to be a pretty strong indicator of where their defense needs are.

That's all the excuse anyone needs to go on a F-35 rant now-a-days in an unrelated thread? How many skyscrapers can you afford by going with super hornets instead? What about a renovation for a hockey arena? How many neopanamax ships? How many oil sands refineries? Hot damn, just about anything can be an excuse to go on a F-35 rant!

That's all the excuse anyone needs to go on a F-35 rant now-a-days in an unrelated thread? How many skyscrapers can you afford by going with super hornets instead? What about a renovation for a hockey arena? How many neopanamax ships? How many oil sands refineries? Hot damn, just about anything can be an excuse to go on a F-35 rant!
Actually, considering they're both part of the defense budget, this isn't entirely unrelated. I'd say it's a fair argument.

I'm pretty sure Canada has decided to cancel buying the F35's!
We just dont need them! Now a few more kayaks or canoes,yes we could use them but some fancy plane that doesnt do anything except cost a lot we can do without.
Besides our CF18's are already stealthy,look under at the phoney cockpit painted on them,designed to be stealthy and confuse....... :devil
Also a single super secret snowball and the F35 will be down!

Canada's got about 110 firms involved in F35 systems production generating about 1 B (can)$ and thousands of Jobs. And as the program as more partners place more orders that will only grow. Now that fact alone I bet makes that Canadian Govt. rather fond of the F35 .

Yes and we have paid billions for those jobs!
Unfortunately our PM has all but canceled the F35,we dont need or want it!
The previous Government was all up in the F35 but we have a new crew running the country and they dont think it's needed. Personally I agree with the new crew and we would be better served with some more CF18's and maybe a couple of Rinos.

Have you ever met the Canadian Army? It's like the American Army showed up with all the same gear, the soldiers say "Eh" a lot, talk more about pancakes with maple syrup, their mess has strong beer, and their drill movements look like the British.
We're always picking up the best equipment from our friends. :D
