Title: Board game flight sims
Post by: mutha on January 30, 2017, 11:39:33 AM
Forgive me/skip this if I brought up before, but sometimes I'm struck by how far we've come in games and simulations.
Back in the Paleolithic era, and by that I mean pre-home computers, some of us geezers used to play flight sims on boards, with cardboard pieces, tracking energy and altitude on paper, and rolling dice to determine hit accuracy.
A fave of mine was Avalon Hill's Richtofen's War, a WWI flight sim. It modeled engine torque (took less points to turn right than to turn left!), and had a campaign mode, and a balloon-busting tutorial.

There was (or maybe still is, haven't seen him post in a bit) a forum troll by the name of Gaston that didn't play the game but would come in and try and plug his flight sim board game and bash AH.

Turn-based is really better...

Of course! I still have mine. The Powerhouse series in the blue slipcover box. SPAD XIII vs. Fokker DVII.
I also have Mustangs by Avalon Hill, Blue Max by Stratelibri, Rise of the Luftwaffe by GMT Games and R.A.F by West End Game a gem of a solitaire Battle of Britain game.

Board game flight sims sound about as much as making out with your own sister.

YEP! My best friend and I used to play Air Force and it's sister game, the name I can't recall. He would always win. When actual head to head flying on computers came about, he never could grasp it.

Ha! The first version of AW involved chiseling your move onto a slab of granite and snail mailing it to your opponent. Just ask Akak, he was there, strangling dinosaurs for chisels or something :D

I miss the many Avalon Games I used to play back in the day. Particularly Advanced Squad Leader. I don't have anyone to play these games with anymore. :old:

I loved those Avalon Hill games.
Back in the day a good friend and myself each copied/duplicated the maps and mounted them on corrugated cardboard then duplicated the pieces and mounted them on thinner pieces of cardboard.
Whenever we got together we'd bring our individual boards with the pieces pinned to the map, play a few turns, each repositioning our own maps then go home. In between each of us had plenty of time to study the map and layout strategy for our next session.
:aok

I started out with Avalon Hill's "Battle of the Bulge," "Afrika Korps" and "Stalingrad." Was too young for "Tactics II." Feeling a bit older now. Computers have made a colossal difference in wargames (especially if you were serious about "Squad Leader"), but it's a shame that people don't get together for a night of board gaming and booze anymore.

Oh ya... when I was stationed at GTMO with VC-10, we would have games that lasted weeks because some were on day shift and others, like me, were on the night/grave shift Though the game was slow, after work, I looked forward to seeing what the day shift had done :aok Btw... there was know cheating... at least with those that played :rock

I actually did a lot of the artwork for this one years ago.
