If you don't need a subscription to play in the arenas put up in the "Free" area. How does a person not signed up for a "2 Week Trial" get to the "Free" tab to make use of the free arenas? Is there a change coming to that access portal process, or does your 2 week trial account after 2 weeks allow you unlimited time access to any player arena put up under the "Free" tab?
Will HTC be putting up a daily arena in there so this works?

My guess is that after the 2 week trail ends, if they click on the free tab they can continue to that page and select a free arena. If they select one of the other options the "pop up" window requesting the CC information would show, stopping them from going to the other arenas with out subscribing.

So h2h is back. Their are still many players that play today that got their start in h2h. I think it will a solid player base when it catches on.
-
has to help get more people playing.
I think this is the biggest thing holding us back. People need the time to fight, to learn the controls and ultimately do better than being a plaything for the better sticks in the MA.
-
Basically what i see is this..
Forced que DA fighting is free. (I think forcing folks to join the que is.. well.. nevermind)
And any arena created by another player, assuming it isnt password protected.

It is not available when match play is active. Very intentional do to the possibility of griefing.

Is it possible to have a matchmaking arena, and our old DA back, both under the free settings?
-
Let low performance rides be free for anyone in Melee. Hurri I, Spit I, and He-111.
They'll get addicted quickly and upgrade to the full version.

hmmm, maybe a training arena. having a non greiving arena as the only option could be the correct choice. the greiving ive found in the first ten minutes.
1. obvious differences in skill. quickly can put someone in their place...
2. grabbing bombers for tail guns.
3. hoeing on first merge. :rofl (not much of a problem)
4. blocking the gameplay by joining and immediately bailing.
One positive...
Gratification is almost instant! If you thought AH2 was like a cocaine addition. Welcome to CRACK!

I would see a limited plane set for none paying player would be a perfect fit.

Non paying customers should have to fly with me and listen if they do not start paying within 2 months. :D

Can't believe I'm agreeing with you but this may actually be a good idea. Maybe throw in a spit 5 once they get some perks? 109F?
-
id like to see perk planes limited. A noob in a hurri one is not going to be happy getting beat down by a U-4. And the sad fact is he will be reaching for a unattainable goal. Having a vet with that kind of advantage is brutal. Also, the end goal is not to gain planes but to join the war.

This is a good idea. Something to consider. This allows people to keep getting a taste of the game until they feel confident enough that their ride limitations are capping their capabilities.

My opinion would be that you get the standard 2 week free trial, all planes. No imits. Then, perhaps you offer up those EW birds only for some version of free play? I dunno. just throwing in my loose change.
-
EW always free, 2 week free trial gets full access. Just an idea. personally, i like the free arena idea.
p.s. re open free trial to everyone again.

I like this idea, I would jump in a populated early war. Also giving all the people who already used a free trial another go wouldn't be a bad thing. Since it is a new game.
-
Match play looks very suspiciously like a prelude to a mobile version of AH.
Personally I like the idea very much.
I think it is pretty cool there is now somewhere I can easily find an aerial fight and I don't have to worry about listening to Whiskey and Ice Road Truckers on range, bandits running to the Ack , retreating to man the field guns, flying 2 grids to circle high above a field hoping for an upper, and other boredom inducing behavior.
Boredom is the long term enemy of AH.
Match play may draw those interested in an aerial fight out of the Melee.
I hope it is tweaked in order to allow a little more structure in the matchups, especially 4 v 4 or greater.
-
must say I've seen alot of no star new names on the roster recently. Hopefully sign of an increase (if they stay)

....and before you know it the majority of players are in the free arena. HTC would be losing more subscribers, certainly not a fix that would help the game in the long run.
I don't see the custom/free arenas helping in the long run either. When we had the H2H arenas those players were their own "group". Even after they closed those arenas only a very small percentage of those players moved into the Mains. Of those who stayed, most went into the DA to make that home.
No I think a way to bring more players into the Main arena is whats needed.
-
....and before you know it the majority of players are in the free arena.
I don't think so, Tim.
-

I totally agree.
-
For now the free arena is a 16 player custom arena or arenas HTC or players have to put up on the HOST. I doubt 16 customers will cancel their subscriptions to be limited to a 16 player arena while having to create a new 2 week account every two weeks. Some might for a time and slip back into the MA on two week accounts. "If", 2 week trial accounts have the system rights to put up a custom arena on the HOST. After awhile you need new blood to dassle and wow with kill landed messages. Though you could run a stealth DA HOSTed by paying customers with a bunch of 2 week accounts and invite back a roughs gallery of PNG'd people and others who don't see eye to eye with HTC.
Does anyone know how HTC has actually structured this?
-
I totally agree.
I don't see it happening at present otherwise this thread wouldn't be here.
-
I don't think so, Tim.
It has already been proven that the players go to which ever arena has the numbers. A good number of players would be happy to drop their subscriptions and fly in the free zone as long as there were people there, add them to the free players. Before long it would have more numbers than the pay arena and that would start the avalanche

Yes, because we are being *FLOODED* with new players now, right?
Looks like my idea has merit then since it would quickly swamp the number of players currently here. Awesome. Let's get the ball rolling. Once the numbers reach critical mass then HTC has options. :aok
-
if I'm not mistakin-you still have to have a subscription to play in the "FREE" arena--THE free refers to the all planes are free not the game.
I had to pay after my 2 week free trial-and I'm still paying--it would not be fair to those of us have to pay while others don't..
and who's gonna pay HTC's bills with no money coming into the couphers from people not paying to play.
the Fugitive thinks AH3 is a sinking ship-with no paying players it will be---and I know your gonna say, with no new players it will be, could be possible.
but players playing for free is not the answer.
and these new players are hearing about AH3 somewhere.
-

you are mistaken. If a paying player, or HTC opens a custom/free arena ANYONE can join in. You do have to have a login, just like the two trial, but you don't need a credit card.

Im just saying if they were to open a free early war arena it would kill off the game much quicker. I'm pretty sure we will never see it so it really is a moot point.
-
If you wanna be limited to EW planes then cancel your paid sub. I won't be doing that. I doubt many here would.
The idea is to attract players and hook them.
The free H2H arenas did it for me when I left Brand X. I dabbled in there for a bit then took the plunge.
It works.

The Fugitive - understand your concern on the risk of offering 'free' could result in even fewer subscriptions. That said, if 'flying limited planes for free' is risky, you have to admit that it hooked hundreds of thousands of subscribers to War Thunder.
Free for limited for select early war airplanes, and expanded is $15 a month for 'all in', it's way cheaper than War Thunder - which is a great selling feature for us here at HTC.
I would give the freebies the P-40B, Spit I, Bf-109E-4, Hurricane I, C202, I-16, and the A6M2 Zero. That basically covers all countries relevant in WWII - American, British, German, Italian, Japanese, and Russian aircraft.
And i would actually let them into the MA.
- Let them SEE the Fw-190D9 fly past them.
- Let them see a B-17 bomber formation take off or B-29's fly overhead
- Let them see tank wars on the ground as they fly around
- Let them take off from a carrier and see the cruiser pound an airfield with their 8" guns and the AAA open up on enemy aircraft.
- Let them see what the game can do while they're stuck in their early war ride
...and then we get to speak to them over air and in range. And that is where we hook them into signing up for the full package. If they don't bite, they would never be a customer anyway.

I agree 100% a limited plane set in the MA would be the best way to go. I was replying to this post....

I as well as a pretty good number of others have posted that a limited set for free would be great. Your list covers all the good points. The down side that was brought up by a few is the new guys getting crushed not only by "aces" but aces in uber planes. In a game that already has a bit of a high frustration level, add to it having a weaker plane to go up against some pretty good players may just push them over the edge quicker.
I like it because it "could" increase the numbers in the arena. With better numbers should come more players. As long as the influx of players stays ahead of those that get too frustrated and quit it would work out ok.

Well, hey, that sounds like a pretty fine arena to me!

Have free arenas or don't have them. Perhaps after trying all there fixes for a game that is just capture the flag, mount high might realize that WWII armies followed the roads and had great battles over railway junctions, bridges and factories.
The game never needed better graphics, AH2 was fine. What the game sorely needs is strategy, a change to basic game play. We have maps that could never support life. No connecting road systems, no train systems linking factories to towns, no convoys hauling fuel or ammo, towns that magically recover simply by time. No rivers to cross or bridges to destroy or rebuild. No engineering troops needed to blow bridges or rebuild them after they were bombed. It’s the stale capture the flag game play that is killing Aces High.
The major WWII battles were fought over chock points, on land, on the sea and in the air, they battled over beach heads, bridge heads, factories, fuel dumps connected by rail systems to refineries, connected to ports. With realistic road, and rail systems, an infrastructure that supported the population and their armies. All of the air battles , tank battles and ground battles were fought over control of the chock points.
All the graphics in the world will not fix stale game play.
-
I must not be playing the same game as you Traveler. The fights yesterday evening were fantastic. Then many of us went in to the FSO and had an absolute ball. Is it perfect all the time? Not possible, there are just too many definitions of what "perfect" is.

Just talking about the game play. it's still capture the flag. It's still played exactly as it was on day one. That’s just my opinion . For what it’s worth that opinion is coming from 22 years of AW and AH, I stay because a few important friendships have developed over that time and we all agree that even though the game has become stale, we still enjoy our style of game play. We have lost most of our squad members due to the demands of life and for some, death, those of us left continue to play not because of the graphics but due to friendships.
-
It needs to be total victory or nothing. This Axis and Allies IPC Victory thing is confusing for new players. Heck, I don't understand it either.
Total war. Total domination. Unconditional surrender! Muhuhuhahhahahhahahaaaaa! :devil

No we dont have rail and road for supply convoys, but they do have a supply system (see many complaints on how engineers rebuild towns so fast!). No we dont have choke points of bridges and such but many of the base lay out on maps set up points were to hold a field you need to take others, or damage others to take certain fields creating the same thing, sopt where battles are concentrated. The game STILL has all the elements to create strategic play. The problem is that in the effort to appeal to a wider audience (aka the sandbox) they have made too many ways around the strategies so that those that dont want to be bothered by them can skirt them, and so we have the capture the flag game play we have.
I must not be playing the same game as you Traveler. The fights yesterday evening were fantastic. Then many of us went in to the FSO and had an absolute ball. Is it perfect all the time? Not possible, there are just too many definitions of what "perfect" is.
I was on until midnight eastern and as a rook the only "battle" going on was against the Knights and it was nothing more than a furball. While a furball is fun..... for a bit .... it gets boring/frustrating getting picked all the time unless you fly like ROCKY and "one pass haul azz" gets boring even faster. Before I logged me and a squdie went north to hold off half a dozen Bish who were trying to grab a base. WHile most of that fight was "dodge the HO" that the Bish seem to love to play it was far more fun than the furball after an hour or so.
I would love to see the strategic game play come back. I think the furball guys would love to see it too as it generally creates a fight. The issue is the majority of players look to capture the flag as Traveler calls it in the quickest easiest way.
Now if HTC were to add things to steer the game play toward a more strategic mode would this be a bad thing? Only to those who cant handle "working" toward a goal instead of just cruizing down the easiest path is my guess. Unfortunately, I think most of the gamers we have today fit in that category.

It's aces high ....not High Generals
Get in a plane and bust some sheet up
-
To be honest fugi... I've seen every side love to play the HO game so to imply that bish more than most like to HO would be incorrect..I was hoed plenty by rook and I've played on every side I say it's about equal.. Other than that I had fun fighting you guys last night in my Uber yak <S>

I dont switch teams like I use to any more so my experience is only against knight and Bish. From that small sampling it seems to me that when fighting the Knights they dont go for the HO ALL the time, were as the Bish seem to go out of their way to HO. Let me explain.
When fighting Knits, more often than not they are as un organized as the Rooks and look to just fight for or defend against the Rooks. The Bish on the other hand are very "base grab" orientated. It is part of their DNA. So even if you should find only a few Bish together they are working to grab a base. Their plan is to do what ever it takes to get the base. Divebomb in bombers, Ho everything, scorch earth bases, they would collide if they could be sure that it would take out the enemy. Take one for the team is their rally cry as they lawndart into the terrain.
I only had the one fight against your yak last night and I really wasn't into it more than being another guy for you to worry about as I was working on trying to get my sound sorted out (it starts breaking up a few hours into a session). The other time I shot you down was twice from a gun on the CV group the Bish horde went after. I really couldn't miss with all you guys there!
It's aces high ....not High Generals
Get in a plane and bust some sheet up
Last night we had some fun fighting against the Knights, but then kills became more important than fights so the 20k group started picking those of us fighting. Only other fight was against the Bish horde rolling bases on the other front. Tough to "bust some sheet up" when your dodgin pickers or being shot at from 5 directions at once in a horde. Sorta takes the fun out of the game.
I agree that all teams HO, all teams Horde, but I think things should be added to the game to make it more "profitable" to NOT fly in a horde, and NOT HO, NOT to be able to divebomb buffs. Take the "gamey" crap out and put skill back in. Even adding a "free" group of planes to the MA isn't going to make people want to subscribe and stay if the game has no challenge. As it is now a bish mission is, auto take off, grab only enough alt to clear obstacle in the way on the way to target. Once there point nose down to the center of target, be it a hanger, a building, a barracks, open doors drop ALL ord on that one target.....just to be sure.... and try to pull out. If you do, use guns on anything until out of ammo....HO planes, vulch in ack (guns are too hard to hit) die. Rinse and repeat. How many times can you do that before you get bored and go look for another game to play?
-
I do understand where you are coming from.. We were definitely working as a horde last night.. Let me explain why.. We were desperate to save that map and rooks were one nit base away from rolling it we weren't sure how long the nits could hold the rooks from that last base so we did smash and grabs in force to be sure we got your own bases down to below 90℅ to save that map.. Our next concern was getting our own bases back that were close to our strats.. You see the rooks are drawn to our strats like a moth to light.. Thus there was constant bombardment of our AAA when you had bases close..I know this cause I'm one of the guys that will resup strats cause it is of strategic importance that if you want to keep your base it's a lot easier if your strats are up.. We didn't roll the map like some thought we were doing at least we didn't when I logged off early this morning.. There was a method to our madness last night we really wanted your CV dead so we threw everything we had at it we really wanted our bases back..Etc etc I much rather fly and fight than sit in a m3 just off my AAA strats like I was last night waiting for the b17s to finish dropping it so I can start bringing it back up but I will if I need to
-
I played as a rook recently I know what it's like to fight against over whelming numbers.. Truth be told some find it a target rich environment I found it to be frustrating but I did enjoy very much flying with people I've been fighting against I call them friends... Same as when I was a nit recently.. admittedly when I switch sides I tried to avoid fighting the bish for obvious reasons.. However as a nit told me if you're a nit it's your morale duty to protect that base that the bish was trying to take so I agreed and ended up killing and get killed by some long time bish friends which led to a few PMs I received not to nasty just more or less WTFs are you doing in red.. Sorry OP I think I hijacked this thread way too much coffee..<S>

Considering the fact that usually "nobody goes there if no one is there", I don't see that coming
I was checking out the free arenas the last 4 days, from (Euro) morning to late evening/night. Population was always 0 in all of them, while the Mellee Arena was going between 30 and slightly over 100.
By the way, I also remember the WW1 arena being absolutely action packed as well, yet after little more than a month about everyone wandered back to the much slower Main Arena...

be careful them AI use hacks like aimbot and zero G lock. Much better challenge than 90% of the human arena though :t

During the alpha when we first tested the AI missions, the a6m could merge, turn, then dive with an F4u 7000ft to the deck and stay with it for miles while the F4u was running WEP.

I like that idea, give a few airplanes free to noobs and once they see how the game is played they will want to join in all of the fun. If not that I think that the free trial period should be increased to at least 3 weeks to give more time to learn the game as it is a fairly steep learning curve for someone that has never played before.
