skorpx1 what's on your mind?
Navy veteran here, and like Frenchy posted, seems like a long ago different life...
I was an AD ( Aviation Machinist rating )/ Jet Mechanic and worked mainly night ops as a Trouble Shooter...
Back then we had 5 to 7 different types of aircraft on the carriers.... it is totally different these days where they might get up to 4 different types (not counting Helos)

Tactical Air Control - Battery powered grunt - radio operator
Cool thing about TAC is that I was working directly with an officer, and they do not travel in trucks. We took UH-1 just about every where we went.

It was not glamorous or comfortable for that matter, but where in life to you get to watch 1000Lbs. bombs blow stuff up? I was 17 years old and the US government trusted me with an automatic rifle and telling pilots to drop bombs on stuff.

rough rough not enough
smooth smooth you got to lose
rough smooth you're in the groove
That brings back memories....don't forget...wayyy too much and it goes to notch notch...need to cease fire immediately and lose some fluid.

Just did a JRTC rotation with 2-87 in January. Had their delta units attached to our platoon. Cool dudes. 2-87 is now in 2nd BCT at 10th Mtn. I arrived at Drum right before my unit got back from deployment, so I missed out on OEF 14 deployment.
Also got the chance to meet a few British soldiers at that rotation. Most of them were from the Poachers and Desert Rat units. They were pretty cool too.

Skorpx,
You chose the right MOS, 11B. No matter what your job or branch of service; quartermaster, logistics, intel, artillery, tanker, or even if you fly a cool jet like Serenity... you're either in the Infantry or you work for the Infantry. Every job in the service is designed to support you in order to take the objective - whether it be a building, bunker complex, terrain, etc... Non Infantry guys sometimes seem to get upset when they hear this but it's in no way demeaning to them as they all contribute to the final outcome (one big team).

My response....Funny I didn't see you on the objective.

VC-10 had a US-2B, which was an old S-2F rebuilt for utility use.
I was stationed in GTMO from January 1976 through July 1977. I qualified as an FE on the C-131s, was in process of qualifying in the HU-16s, but they were retired when my training was only partially complete. I crewed the C-118's regularly. However, I transferred only a few months after passing my check ride.
I requested a 6 month voluntary extension of my tour, while working with a Detailer to get a new assignment. I volunteered for sea duty, flying from Saratoga. I thought then and still think that if you're going to fly Naval Aviation, even as an enlisted man, you HAVE to do a tour flying from a carrier. Two cruises and an awful lot of flying and traps, deck runs and cat shots, and it was worth every minute...

A lot of truth to those first few sentences. Never will you do anything other than be the trigger puller or the one who helps the trigger puller.
At the end of the day its still one team one fight.

My favorite story came from a former Army Infantry dude trying to switch to become a Navy Officer (And pilot specifically).
He was on hour x of an excruciatingly long march through the desert in Iraq, just hating his life, when he heard the distant sound of engines and looked up to see a pair of Hornets go overhead. He paused and thought to himself "Man, I bet THOSE guys don't have to march anywhere! I gotta become a pilot!"
I'm fine being support, if it means I get to fight from the seat of an air conditioned cockpit :p :bolt:

Heck we all thought that every time a fly boy came over. I always envyed the A10s because they killed so many bad guys.

When you're getting your asz handed to you with a 5 to 1 disadvantage, there's nothing sweeter to a grunt as the sound of screaming turbines and crash of afterburners of the CAS dudes, nothing sweeter.

Boat'sun with a hunting license
5'38 Mk 30 Single Dual purpose gun
Gunners Mate Guns (GMG3)
The day this image was taken I had climbed out of the forward mount to try and secure access panels on the front of the mount. As I was working the dogs on the panel, we took blue water over the bow. I was picked up and washed from the front of the mount back to the windbreak on the starboard side. If not for two other Gunners manning my safety line, my ticket would've received its final punch. I remember Dave screaming at me about the water and then there is a blur of blue and a roar. Next thing I remember is hanging on to a life line stanchion.
We ended up turning the mount so that water didn't hit directly on the access hatch.

I'm sorry Widewing but during my tour at gtmo, we had 4 stoofs, no 131s and 1 stoof c. We also flew F-8ks (an F-8U varient) with 2 kept fully
loaded and on alert 24hrs/day
I was a flight crew member on week ends only for the extra flight pay. We towed targets for ships as well as
the fighters. As I understand it, VC-10 recieved the A-4 sometime after my tour and then was de-commissioned as a squadron
My memory isn't that great but that is what I remember
