making shore batteries visable on the map for all countries to see for each country in my not wanted opinion is not a good idea. makes it easy for battleships to take them out before the sb's can even see the fleet.
now to me this seems gamey. please make the Shore batteries invisible again

Yea I was worried about people using land mode to snipe SBs

The battle last night showed that with bases that have 3 SB's, one heck of a fight can develop. Yes, the SB's were put down, but the battle that raged in the area was PRIME TIME MAIN ARENA ACTION.
Eventually the rook CV was sunk, by knit torpedos! But the SB's as they came online caused significant damage, enough so that range vox was LIT with cries to take down the shore battery.
If BB is taking out SB from THAT far away, wouldn't that make it easier to up bombers for CV that is a ways away? Perhaps an up/down icon would be more appropriate on the map. That way at a glance, one can see SB's destroyed, prompting defenders to the area?
I dunno, I like them at this point.

Good to know. Thought it was out a bit, but this makes sense. Didn't think the GPS system was in place yet in '44.

I like seeing them on the map. Guys will know to up and defend if a CV attack is happening at a base without them.
The SB's have killed many a carrier base attack and are just another way of players avoiding upping without risk to themselves.
I would also like a roll over mouse option that says down or up like the strats. :D

i like the land mode snipe. The art of shooting is not know enough. hopefully more will shoot on target and more efficient use of the boat guns.

p.s. say what? their spray is 200 yds wide or 400? is this a accurate computer model of the real guns? :headscratch: if it is a 100 yard radius of error. that is the distance i used to move off land mode to rake a area.

I think HT is saying that when you click on the map, the aim point of the guns is a random 200 yard spot from where you clicked. You can then manually adjust from there. I think the whole point of that is so you CANNOT one-shot snipe a SB just by clicking on it from the map.

Absolutely but land mode shouldn't be used if someone is talking you in on a target.

Like the idea of visible SB. Scouting of the airfield would find them and report they were there.

It's less accurate then if some said Up 200 left 100 and you adjusting the guns manually 1 degree left and .2 up

You're shooting from a moving Target without land mode each shot would also have to compensate for the ship movement.

Exactly..precision from land mode would keep it tight..you could adjust 100yrds up 50 right much easier..

You can pin point in landmode those numbers by clicking the map? A manual adjustment if you are being talked in on target is a lot easier and more precise. Taking into account the ships movement is also another adjustment I'd wasn't thinking about because my experience with calling in indirect fire was from stationary mortars and guns.

land mode is like your shooting from land. example, if you shoot withe the same aim it will hit the same spot. this would not be true if your doing mortars from a moving truck or a boat. hence land mode. for sea mode the guns remain stationary after each shot. land mode the guns are always adjusting to aim at a given target. hence land mode is how you would want the guns set to be guided in by observer.
i still like the idea of sniping. everything can be sniped with the correct knowledge of tower and map room placement. :old:
kudos to those who snipe. we dont always have to be in uber hard mode, let alone throwing in random error to dumb down a guys ability to shoot. id bet a dollar the army knew exactly where a shore battery was in world war two. we dont have wind or waves so we get a snipers best day.

The random 200yd error introduction is probably for the 22mile max range of the 16in so a battle ship cannot sit almost a sector away and prep a town for capture. The shore battery still has to be engaged visually to account for the 200yd error. Then minor corrections while you salvo the shore battery down.

i hope the randomness is only on the "map click" and not for every "shot".
The art of shelling got a little tougher.
I remember good days shelling town and airfields by looking at the map. wow almost gaming the game. in hindsight we should got paid for our skill.

Click on map first time in land mode..fire guns
Now use wsad keys to move guns from original impact..easy.. 50 yards further 100 yards right etc
Don't click on map after the initial hit..walk the guns around with wsad

It works like that?? Learn something new every day, thought you had to click the map to change the shooting position in land mode

yep easypeasy.. top left of screen shows + - yards etc ..now go tear up a town/Base

Your explanation of "Land mode" matches my understanding, where it automatically compensates for the movement of the ship, to keep the impact point fixed. However, for "Sea mode", my understanding was that it compensates for both the movement of the firing ship and the movement of the target, to keep the impact point fixed relative to the target. On reflection, my thinking must be wrong, as we don't "designate" a ship target by clicking on something, the way we do for land. So, can we please get some kind of range-finder for the ship's naval arty?

+A_BILLION for that idea. Jebus - range fingers were bread and butter instruments in all ships. As long as we can get a Stereoscopic rangefinders (which the navy had!!!) - could be a different view on a BB or any naval gun. (i.e. hop into range finder, then back to gunsight.).

Sea mode simply accounts for any turning of your ship. You have a range finder with the mill sight.

Thanks, Dale. I do recall now that there is some sort of cross-hairs when in the big guns, but couldn't figure out exactly how it was used.
Is there anyone out there willing to post a short tutorial on how the ship range-finder mill sight is used? Thanks.

1 Mill = the angular height or width 1 foot at 1000 feet, or any other 1 unit at 1000 units.
So if a ship is 50 feet high and measures 3 mills high, simply take height / mills I.E. 50 / 3 = 16.6 and multiply by a thousand , 16.6 * 1000 = 16,600 feet away.

I still like the idea of recreating the system used by actual naval guns on ships. Yep - it is appreciated. Yet the navy folks had their bino rangefinder they would just dial in - and later on with the Mark radar systems, it was done electronically to the fire control system who then fed it to the lads on the inside top portion of the turret who adjusted the range for their assigned fire mission. (Every turret crew could also use their own optical sights if their fire control radar was out or being used on another target - good to have a backup if the Ford Mark 1 was out).
I'll can do up a table. But I'm not happy to do it...do I have to know the operational heights of the ships to calculate how far they're away? :furious

I use a certain line. Align it with the waterline of the target ship and bingo. :) No calculations.
Sometimes when the ships are farther off the waterline is not shown clearly and you have to adjust down accordingly.

Just make sure if you track randomness you know what random means....also if you bump old threads in order to help out your points for discussions of now...make sure you understand how the game was back then....or else you just help the argument of Dundee doesn't know what he's talking about.
