Bf 109F-2 flown by Hans "Assi" Hahn, the commander of Jg 2's Third Gruppe in July 1941. This is Hahn's first 109F and features an unusual red painted upper cowling and rudder. The rudder has 31 victory marks in black.

Color...
September 29 2013, 12:35 AM
Hi Paul,
Assi Hahn responded to this same question I asked him in June 1968. His answer was, " No, The cowling color on my Bf 109 was never red or orange but yellow and the camouflage color was blue-gray."
Cheers, Jerry

Looks so good devil.
-
:aok
-
Great looking skin, Devil! I expect to see a lot of that one in the MA.
-
Great job. I have his 109 painting on my wall. He had it rough when in the gulag.
-
Its a great looking skin Devil. But given Krusty's references in that thread what is the evidence that the nose and tail were red?
-
Reminds me of Hermann Graf's 109. Assi Hahn was pretty brutal toward that guy in his book.

April Fools!
Here's the real skin with a yellow cowling and rudder:

I was telling a squaddie yesterday about the skins I had just finished and reflecting on Vraciu's P-51 when the idea to make a prank version hit me.

What did he say?
I can't imagine that Hahn would have ever crossed paths with Graf during the war.

Artist rendition in what looks like MS Paint. I would not put a ton of stock in paintings as people notoriously get things wrong or continue misinformation.
Yellow nose was a AAA IFF marking common on the Eastern Front. Not too many guys were flashy like Graf.

It's a rather poor profile based on this very old and incorrect one.

This is the definitive work on Hahn's aircraft by Jerry Crandall:

The yellow was universally applied to all Luftwaffe fighters through most of 1941. It was later just applied to the lower cowling. You are thinking of the use of yellow tail bands and lower wing tips being Eastern Front specific markings.
-
Yes you are correct, I've been away from my pile of 109 books. A month ago I picked up Volume I, Geschicte des Jagdgeschwaders 77. Thought it might help practice my German along with pretty early war pictures.

Cool!

They were in the gulag together. Graf got special torture due to his fame as a member of the German national team for soccer. When he broke his fellow captors turned on him. Hahn ripped him a new one in I TELL THE TRUTH.

I was curious where this was going! Great looking skin!

Looks good but now I want Graf's red nose 109.

They're both already in game. The G-6 is Jg 50 by Fencer and the K-4 is Jg 52 by NRraven

Didn't he have others? A G-5 or something?
I recall a G-2 but it wasn't red I'm guessing.
-
Not with a red tuliped nose. That began when he formed Jg 50 in November, 1943. Before that his aircraft followed the conventions of the rest of Jg 52.
He also had red tulips on his 190's while commanding Jgr. Ost.

Devil if you want I will ask Skuzzy to transfer that 109G to you. It would save me having to redo it with it's 100 plus friends.

Quite the gesture. I have maybe....nine or ten skins total. I dunno how you manage 100+.

Ok, figured it out. Timing it seems is everything in paint schemes. The recent back and forth with Horses Itch was primarily a date issue. Early P-51B/C's were white nosed and when the D's arrived they were yellow/red checkered. Han's 109F-4 was yellow and then later it was red in the G2.

Incorrect. That's another rendition from an artist on F-2s as you can see in the photo caption itself. G-2s weren't around for BoB era France. He became gruppenkommodore in JG 54 on the Eastern Front where he flew the G-2. And it was painted.... just like the rest of the gruppe.

So when did his F-4 have a red nose? I've seen several pictures of Han's 109 with a red top/yellow bottom for the engine cowling... :headscratch:
The in-game yellow looks beautiful BTW. :aok
And when did he start flying the Fw-190A series?
-
Hahn never flew any aircraft with a red nose.

He also shot first!!! :old:

Looks familiar..
Erickson Aircraft Collection has restored a G10 with an Allison Engine engineered to fit the original cowling and exhaust ducting. She just did engine runs and is working toward flight status..
-
Ingenious fitting of the Allison but that paint scheme being on the wrong airframe does not impress me.

It's Graf's no? Well. Sorta.
-

It's the Jg 50 scheme from 1943 on a G-10 airframe from late '44 at the earliest. It would be like painting a P-51D like "Ding Hao!" Yeah, it's a Pony; but not close to the right one.

Very cool.
I built a 1:72 109F-2 from Zvezda - wonderful kit. Too bad I lost the spinner before I could paint it.
