Title: HOW NOT TO LAND A P-51D - Video With Prop Strike (OUCH)
Post by: Vraciu on April 29, 2017, 09:15:03 PM
Oldie but goodie.   I can't find the audio version.      Damn.  That was classic with the idiot narrator giggiling and hooting.

Any way.   Vraciu Lands His "Darth Pony" Mustang at a CAP'd Field.

Ug.  It looked very nice until the bounce.  :(

This guy did a fine job of demonstrating all the things not to do with a Mustang.  By the way, I recently learned that a new prop for a Mustang is in the vicinity of $100,000.

That was pretty much what not to do with any airplane.

I've seen the video with audio.  The wife is literally laughing and cackling as she watches him land his plane.  Either she didn't realize the danger he was in, or didn't care.

So the prop was spinning when it hit too.  What kind of engine maintenance does that require?

Very true.

Some new prop blades and a complete engine rebuild.    Not a cheap screwup.

Not always an engine build.  There was no stoppage, low power so perhaps no damage to the crank.

A couple of the boys lets the B-17 get away from them on takeoff at Santa Barbara when the tailwheel lock pin sheared.  They hit a runway/taxiway sign with the prop on #2 cleaving the sign in half.  With the local Fed in attendance the crank runout was mic'd and found in tolerance.....continued to aviate.

I will defer to you, but I think the crank is toast.    I wouldn't be surprised if he hit the prop on the bounce, too.  It was close.   Blades alone are enough to make my wallet wince.   :uhoh

Lol, like that phrase.  "Continued to aviate."

Yeah, sure looks like a prop tweak on the bounce.

In my experience; not many people have the "scratch" to own, let alone maintain and operate a P51. Often wondered if those that can front the money, also pay for the training and experience to handle a high performance tail dragger.

I wonder did he land short or does that roadway actually cross the runway....that was quite a bump.  I've hit some like that landing on gravels bars and such but on a runway....seems a bit silly.  Pilot did a good job not screwing things up further by trying any heroics.

Looked it up, landed "off airport".  So that road was actually a taxiway before the runway started.  You can tell by the sound he cut (or lost) power early.

Edited for better info.

These vids show me the gear on a Mustang.........way tougher than modeled in here.   Wow.

With the Miss Helen video it looked to me like there was a power loss from the smoke puff and then trying to stretch the glide until bagging it and hoping for the best while flying as far into the crash as he could.  Turned out as well as you could expect from taking it off a ski jump with about 10 seconds of warning and he danced on the rudders when the nose started coming back to the right.

My take was the smoke was from "clearing" the engine.  You can here it still running until it's eased back to idle in the flare.

Someone go find this guy, give him the link to the forum and tell him he "has some explaining to do!".

That's valid and didn't think anything much of it at first. After another couple go's I felt like I saw a glide path change from needing the power to drag the airplane up to the threshold to not making it because of what I believe was *something* sapping power when the pilot was counting on it.

It looks like the engine conked out on the P-51.

Quote
Summary:
G-BIXL was on a final approach to land on a grass runway when the engine began to run roughly. The pilot advanced the throttle which led to a marked reduction in power. The aircraft touched down on the grass short of the runway but was forced back into the air when it crossed the lip of a raised taxiway. During the following touchdown and deceleration, the left main gear was damaged and the propeller hit the ground before the aircraft came to a halt. The cause of the rough running and power loss was not positively determined at the time of publication of this report.

If you can afford an airworthy P-51, you can afford to rebuild the engine. If not, he just made a museum piece.
