Title: Kale-do you know what it is?
Post by: Ripsnort on August 10, 2017, 04:21:26 PM
There has been a kale fad going on for awhile.
Unfortunately my wife caught the kale bug and likes to make salads with it.

Let me give you some advice about Kale.

I made a deal with my Wife.

I will eat fresh Spinach, as long as she never buys one leaf of Kale.  That stuff is simply nasty.  Good fresh Spinach is not bad.  I am talking the small leaf variety.

Most people don't know to cook spinach or kale. Both of them are delicious when you add fish, shrimp, chicken etc to them.

Would you be willing to work for hire for negotiations with mine?  Kale.  And Avocado.  Just don't understand the obsession with either.

Fresh spinach (or even canned if it's washed and drained) sautéed in a skillet with butter, garlic, and crushed red pepper seeds is awesome. Always ate spinach with vinegar until I cooked it that way. Kale is ok steamed with cracked pepper and vinegar. Now Brussel sprouts.......bury them in a shallow unmarked grave.

This is how it werks.  1) Get sum kale seeds.  2) ask wife where she wants the kale plant. 3) plant kale 4) pick kale and give to wife. 5) repeat step 4 until wife never wants to see kale again.

Chocolate Dipped Kale

Heat up some chocolate until it is a liquid.  Swirl the kale around in it coating everything.  Place on wax paper put in freezer to harden and cool.  Take it out of the freezer, hit it with a hammer so the chocolate pops off.  Eat the chocolate, throw the kale away.

Anything tastes good with enough ranch on it.  The cruciferous vegetables are extremely healthy.  Eat as much as you can, especially raw.  Kale is similar to cabbage in its texture and toughness.

Kale, spinach, cauliflower... I like them all if they're prepared properly. As hgtonyvi said, most people don't know to cook spinach or kale. Or nettle, which is a good substitute for spinach...

There's an old recipe for making good food: Take one lbs butter and a litre of cream, plus the normal amount of ingredients for four. Sauté the ingredients in the butter and add the cream.

Another good recipe is the Lappish Loon Soup, as told by the Sami huntsmen:

Take one loon. Put four litres of fresh water into a kettle. Heat to boil. Cook the loon in the water for ten minutes. Throw the water away.
Put three litres of fresh water into the kettle, add a handful of grass. Heat to boil. Cook the loon for five minutes. Throw the water away.
Put two litres of milk into the kettle. UHT, pasteurized or cow milk, whatever you have.  Heat to boil. Cook the loon for one minute. Throw the milk away.
Put one litre of good clear spirit into the kettle. Let the loon simmer for a few seconds. Throw the loon away.
Enjoy the soup.

Like any man needs another Wife to deal with. :)

I don't get the Avocado either.  When she makes guacamole I have to suppress long lost thoughts of what it was like to change baby diapers.  *shudderzzzz*

Don't understand how anyone doesn't like good guacamole.  That is good stuff.

2 ripe avocados
1 ripe medium tomato, pulp removed and diced
1 jalapeno, chopped fine
1/4 cup chopped cilantro
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon kosher salt

Combine all ingredients in a bowl.  Mash and mix to desired consistency

Kale is a garnish....period. Put it on my plate to make things look pretty...ok. Put it on a salad bar around the bacon bits and dressings....Just fine. Put it on my plate, and expect me to eat it.......not gonna happen.

And then puke!  There is a reason I call it cacamole.  Can't stomach thinking about it.  Damn, there goes my breakfast.  Can't eat after this thread.

My aversion to it exceeds any other food I do not care for.  #1 on the puke parade.

You guys are, ummm..., please help me find a word! Candy-ass, says the online dictionary...

I must admit there's dishes I won't do the second time. Lung-cabbage casserole is one of them. I was living on contributions while studying and the local market had some nice looking meat for an affordable price in the meat counter. So I asked how to prepare it. The shop assistant told people usually cook it, so I took a chance... The result would have been delicious if I had used some greasy bacon. Lungs have a rubbery texture by a magnitude!

Raw tomatoes and avocado, including guacamole, are the only 2 things I wont eat at all.  I like stewed tomatoes, and things like pico, but anything to do with avocado I avoid like the plague.

You know they say your taste buds change every few years and you develop a taste for different things, so I sample some guacamole every now and then and the result is always the same.. nope still tastes like crap.

Kale?  Really?  Take a lesson from those southern cooks and go with collard greens, mustard greens, or turnip greens.  Done southern style I can guarantee you won't have to worry about them being too "healthy".

Kale is far better than what I ate growing up in BFE WV. My mom went through a stage where every spring we picked "greens". Dandelion, meadow lettuce, poke , other "weeds". Spend six hours in the woods picking multiple grocery bags of the crap. Three bags worth of it cooked down to a bowl full. There was not enough vinegar in the house to kill the taste.

lol, Skuzzy, had a friend of mine that had that aversion to "Peach Fuzz". You could start talking about eating a peach with the skin on and rolling the "peach fuzz" around in your mouth, and he would be puking in about 3 minutes. The guy went on to become one of the VP's on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. :airplane:

I love guac but took forever to try it, due to it looking like baby poo.  Now kale?  That tastes horrible.  Like "liver" horrible.  Blecch!

While being far from my favorite, I will say nobody knows how to cook it proper. (and if you meet somebody who says they like it raw, keep your hand on your wallet because they're f*****g lying. Six years in kitchens and I ain't never seen one Golly-geen person order a kale salad without dressing, and ain't nobody asks for extra on the veggie burger).

How my native Dutch mentor taught me.
Step one. Get yourself a hot-a** sauté pan.

Olive oil. Never butter with vegetables, you arrogant, uncultured redneck heathens.

Fry that ****

Step two. Add Balsamic vinegar. Three tablespoons.

Step three. Drain it.

Add sea salt and fresh pepper.

Step four. Grow a pair and learn your wang isn't going to lose a couple inches if you admit you like something other than steak and whiskey and know how to spell.

Step five. Get the hell out.
