Title: Advice needed on new rig, got a tax rebate coming 😆
Post by: Adjuster on August 11, 2017, 09:55:49 AM
OK guys been away for 12 years (from AH not in jail 😇)
So I'm gonna build a new system to hook up to the 4k 55" Samsung TV.

Not an Intel kinda guy and do like AMD processors and GPU so not loozing for Intel or Nvidia recommends.

Budget is around  $2000 Aussie so that's around £1600 or US $1500.

No interest in fancy lit up led fed cases just bang for buck.

Thinking Ryzen with around 16gb ram  2tb hdd, not worried about ssd for os, more interested in ideas for processor and graphics card.

Fire away

For the video card, get the fastest card on the planet if you want to play at 4K resolution.

If you insist on AMD, then I would suggest you need to wait two more generations if you want to play at 4K resolution.  Maybe by then they will have a quality solution for 4K game play.

Ryzen+Nvidia is a good combo, but as Skuzzy said everyone has been holding their breath for quite a while for AMD to release a decent video card that can compete with Nvidia.

Techboards  test show you do not see the difference between 4k and full HD (1920*1080) if you do not sit VERY close to the TV.

My layman thinking says there's another opinion on this subject. If your monitor is very large, you'll see the difference at normal viewing distance. If you can see the grid so well it disturbs you, you're either too close or the resolution is too low.

It looks like something I'd want to build.         Coupla thoughts:

The cryptocurrency mining craze has affected price and supply of many video cards.  It might be worth it to compare closely the price and performance differences between the 1070 and 1080 - last time I checked the price was so close for some models it was definitely worth it to grab the 1080.

Not sure about the power supply manufacturer, but I'd be tempted to get a Gold rated one from Seasonic in the 550-650 watt range.

Also, Ryzen loves fast memory - I think you might consider looking at the memory Pudgie picked in his Ryzen build - might have been 3200.

Adjuster, you need to check out the AMD Ryzen CPU thread that is a few threads below this one, and follow Pudgie's build

yes a good seasonic 650 watt PSU as obeo posted... and me personally will never bother with another MSI board again, having had 4 to 5 of them fail, due to pour Quality Control

Do more research on this before you pull the Trigger and buy the wrong stuff

hope this helps

TC

edit: Pudgie, if you got time and see this, please help Adjuster out on what he needs for a good quality component build, I personally don't like most of what he has posted on his list for an AMD build, and he did not even include a CPU heatsink/cooler....

The Ryzen comes with a the Wraith cooler I believe.  Its one more price advantage AMD has over Intel CPUs - the are already lower priced plus they come with a decent cooler...

That was just a first edit tbh. I prefer Gigabyte boards, was making sure cpu and GPU combo looked up to par and enough ram. Got a couple of weeks till the taxman begrudgingly gives me $6500 back so my $2k rig will possibly (read almost certainly ) creep over my initial budget.

Gotta love this community, great friendly advice  :D

Perhaps ask around to see if anyone here is running a 4k large/TV size panel with a 1070.  That's a large 4k panel to drive, and a 1070 may not allow you to run max graphics settings and maintain FPS where you wish them.  IE manage your expectations with a mid or low end of the higher end GPUs.  Even a 1080ti @4k on such a large screen is going to be put to work running AH3 at max res and details I would wager.  I'm basing this off my experience with a 28" 4k/Gsync monitor though, I've never run 4k PC games through a 4k TV, again, see if anyone here has done so and what their results were first, before buying/expecting anything with your build.

Already decided on a monitor for most use, big tv just for lazy sofa gaming. Just looking around for a decent monitor, 4k can probably wait a while

My apologies if my post seemed to be harsh with words, Adjuster!

I was just trying to get you some help from someone with experience with the new AM4 Ryzen CPU's

Cheers

Not in the slightest harsh, I'm just so impressed that this community is so helpful.
Pudgie just sent an awesome response.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Just to give a demonstration of what to somewhat expect using an AMD R9 Fury X vid card running Crimson 17.7.2 drivers using VSR to render graphics in AHIII @ 4K (3840 x 2160) res then frames are downsampled to fit this 27" Asus MG279Q Gaming IPS monitor @ 2560 x 1440 res @ 90 Hz RR using FreeSynch w\ all game & graphics settings left as set in last video posted in this thread: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,384435.150.html

Here is the video of my Team Red box running AHIII rendered @ 4K:

ASUS VP28UQG 28" 4K UHD FreeSync 1MS LED Gaming Monitor

Unit Cost :$549.00

Pushing budget even further, but this looks good value for 4k

Alternatively

AOC AGON AG322FCX 31.5" Full HD Adaptive-Sync Curved 144Hz 5MS LED Gaming Monitor

Unit Cost :$499.00

Cheaper but only 1080

Or eat beans for a few weeks ....

Acer Predator XB281HK 28" 4K G-SYNC 2 1MS LED Gaming Monitor

Unit Cost :$829.00

Opinions guys 😊

Hi Adjuster,

What I'll give you here will be somewhat based on what you've posted already.

I read that you already have a 4K res 55" TV that you're using and can hook your new build up to it, yes?

From reading your postings I'm deducing that you're a fan of 4K res as you've picked 2 of the 3 gaming monitors choices to be 4K res capable, so if this is so then it is my thought that you will need to settle this outright concerning a LCD monitor purchase to use when not using your existing 4K TV. Either you want this LCD monitor to be 4K or not and if you do want true 4K then you will be limited to a max of 60Hz at this time.

If FPS\RR >60Hz is important to you (1 of the main reasons why 1 would purchase a 1080 series graphics card) then you'll have to give up the true 4K res LCD monitor at this time and only look at options w\ res <4K in general...........unless you're gonna spend a LOT more money than you've shown as your budget!

I typed this to get this out in front of what you've asked us for.....our opinion(s).

So in light of your particular situation I would recommend your 2nd pick, the AOC AGON AG322FCX 31.5" Full HD Adaptive-Synch Curved 5ms 144Hz Gaming Monitor as it is the least expensive, has some of the newer tech out, has 144Hz capability (which will allow you to really enjoy the 1080 graphics card's FPS speed w\ V-synch enabled.....) which will drastically improve control input lag issues which is a BIG issue for gaming, 1920 x 1080 res is still IMHO the best all around res to have\use for gaming AND you already HAVE a 4K res device in hand that you could use so would you really need 2 of them?

Also both camps, Nvidia AND AMD, have provided the means within their drivers the capability to render full 4K graphics frames then downsample the finished 4K frames to be able to display them on as low as 1920 x 1080 res monitors (Nvidia's DSR & AMD's VSR) as a means to bring the experience of 4K graphics to lower res monitors....ie, "poor man's 4K".....at much higher FPS to boot than you'll find on ANY true current 4K monitor out today. The Nvidia 1080 you've chosen should be able to do this easily w\ this monitor....so again, why would you want to buy another true 4K monitor for gaming?

This was 1 of the reasons why I cued up the video & posted it here to demonstrate this DSR\VSR tech for you to consider before I gave my opinion. A lot of users IMHO have completely glossed over this capability being available to them....this can also be used to bring 2K (2560 x 1440) res to an existing 1920 x 1080 res monitor as well..............

As always, hope this can help you out.

This is why I ask 😆

Once again thanks for the great and detailed information.

Think I've made the decision now, the AOC is curved and whilst I'm not convinced about the natural view blurb I do know that if you have windows in the room curved screens cope better with reflection from the room. It's one of the hidden features I found when I got the TV.

Thanks once again 😆

No problem, Adjuster.........

I have to say though that in the end it's your money my friend..........if you really want either of those 4K monitors (or any of the other items) then don't let any of my recommendations stop you if those choices are what you really want.

I know that you know this already...........but I felt that I needed to say it, if for no other reason, for my sake.

Hope all works out for you & will be glad to help out where I can.

Taxman just dropped $6k in my account   :x

Off shopping later today, then gonna build a complete rig from scratch.

Budget has exploded, but as I wasn't expecting this rebate from the kind people in the Australian Tax Office I intend spoiling myself rotten 😆

So with a fair wind and plenty of tea I should be back in the air this evening  :aok

I think by about 10pm here (10 am Friday EST) I should be dying frequently in the MA

It all depends on your budget. In general if your near $1000 go Intel. Below that consider AMD. Get the best Nvidia card you can afford. If you work on your computer often and have the room go with a full size case. Better cooling. Easier to work on.
