S! all,
If you have steam, download Aces High and run it in the background for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, you can close than the game (and delete it if you use the off steam version) and will be able to post a review. I already saw 2 poorly constructed negative reviews. I just posted a positive one but we need more!
-
getting it, thanks for the heads up! :aok
-
I don't have Steam and don't plan to. Realize we are not going to get all great reviews. The ones that post negatively probably don't have the patience to learn. Some will want to be Maj. Bong immediately and as we know that ain't gonna happen. If they wish a challenge this is the game for them. If the challenge of "getting good" is in them they will post positively. Playing AH for all of ten minutes and letting them post a review is ridiculous to say the least. Most of us know it takes a great deal of time to learn if you've never played an air to air combat sim. I hope they know we aren't going to fly in a straight line at 200mph and let them unload their ammo.
We need to help those that have questions. We need to help them with the nuances of combat flying. This game takes more then any other flight sim to learn and at least be competent. There is no other flight sim with this flight model this accurate and authentic with more participants in one place anywhere. The key is in the numbers who play our game. Other sims have a limited amount of participants. We put more in the air here with a wider variety of aircraft then any other sim. Others may prefer to go through the whole nine yards to take off and manage the plane in the air. But again the number is limited.
-
Understood and agree to an extent Hajo. However, I believe the first step is to make the game enticing for those new player to download the game and make those early mistakes we have all made and then seek out assistance. If the reviews are skewed (4 out of 5 negative at time of posting) the players will not come and there will be nobody to assist. I saw you earlier helping a new player, well done, that is awesome work! All existing players need to step it up by bringing and/or helping new players enter the fold.
-
Also try and help out players posting questions to the Steam site if you have an account. I've been trying to answer questions and give an accurate idea of the game without sugar coating some things, such as difficulty.
I think if we can show we have an active and supportive community it will help attract players as well.

This would be true, if it weren't for long-time players making the reviews. Krupinski and Dolby to be specific, among a couple others now.

More reason to get some guys in there posting something useful.. rather than whining guys crying about getting banned.
Dolby is a sweetheartbag.. he acted like it in game, and im sure he does it in others. I was surprised to see crap like that from krup though. Hopefully the first name mentioned above is banned from the gameplay aspect of AH as well.
-
When I get home I'm going to post a review. But seriously, some people play the game for 5 minutes and go "IT SUCKS." Wow. Is this what our internet generation has become?
-
Where did Krup hate on the game? The only thing I saw from him was a solid review vs other similar games like War Thunder?

He took the 1st one down, and put up a new one.

I need to get on there and post my review.
I need the world to know my opinion of Aces High -- that it is THE MOST AWESOME GAME IN THE UNIVERSE! :rock

Ummmmm that name is already taken :neener: :salute 49bong

He took a dump on a game he's spent 1/4 of his life playing. LOL what a guy
-
to his credit, he went back and fixed it shortly after.
-
Also, perhaps the BBS could have a "All Things Steam" page like was done for the War Birds that came over in mass years ago.
-

He has had some History with Hitech and too some of his friends who used to play AH with him. Should let this go and simply remember Krup the man who made the right decision. He showed character. :salute

If you all are planning on reviewing the game, I just ask that you do it honestly. Don't make it sound like a paid advertisement on late night TV. Be to-the-point, and honest from your point of view, and maybe focus on what you (hopefully) love about the game.
To me when I read a game review on steam, those have a larger impact on my perception of the game than those that sound like they're gushing praise and exaggerating the game, if you know what I mean?

Greetings. Welcome to the internet.
You may find during your stay here that not everybody is logical, nice, helpful, or sane. You will see people do things that make no sense. You will see people do things that may be directly harmful to themselves or their viewpoint. You will see people do things just because they can.
The fact people are surprised by what we've seen thus far today really highlights how sheltered this community is.
The only thing that has surprised me so far today was Krup changing his review.

The above is excellent advice.

I love the game but if I were to write a review it would contain a lot of comments most of you would consider very negative. Remember others will almost always have different views and they are not wrong, just different.

Your review would then be.
1 Thumbs up.
2 Start with I love the game and why,
Followed by things I don't like about the game.
That's how honest reviews are supposed to be. But as you post here ,if you would do a thumbs down, when you just stated you love the game would that make sense?
HiTech
-
or just keep your review brief, like 4 words... :devil
-
Dolby always was a paranoid and despicable human being. Good to see things have not changed over the past couple years.
-
I'd love a steam key for this game, show my friends that I'm playing, not sure this is possible, I know iRacing does this, shows I'm playing even though I'm using non-steam version, but I'm down for giving a good review.
I don't understand bad reviews on first day, dang give it a good try first! :D
-
How does one give a review in Steam? I've been able to read them, but I'm not seeing any area for me to actually post one. Do I have to download the steam version and have a second installation that I'll never use just to post a review? :(

Do you have a Steam account? If you have a Steam account you can do a review or reply to a review.
-
I have an account and can reply to reviews, as well as post in the forums... I cannot see where I can actually post a review.
-
You have to "play" the game through steam for a few minutes.
-
I don't use steam but:
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PROMOTE ALL THE SUPER BADARSE SPECIAL EVENTS THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS!!!
-
It should be for a few hours, but yes, you have to "play"
-

It's on the store page under the Play button.
-
At the top of the trending page for Free to play games...
With the negative comments, if you don't agree with them give it a thumbs down and comment.
Steam is like YouTube, the more times it is hit....good or bad it trends....Youtubers don't care if something hits the dislike button....still counts all the same.
When I'm able to come back to game I'll be switching to straight from steam so my friends list on steam sees "Playing Aces High III"....
Y'all would be surprised Krupnski has been doing this for months on Steam with Aces High and he plays with some very well known gamers.....to be exact Summit1G....just watch summit play GTAV and you will see Krup racing him.
Oh and if anyone doesn't know Summit1G he has like 15K subscribers on Twitch...think he is the 3rd biggest individual stream on Twitch.
Some might hate on Krup but he is one of the good sticks who doesn't fly in a way which makes baby seals quit....he actually gets into the fight instead of those who are good enough to do it but choose their K/D over actually giving the new guys a chance. A lot of you this applies to but I don't have to make people, just look at the top 50 and you see most of them.
Another reason why killing a player with a certain rank should be implemented into the kill points.
-
Sounds like I need to install through steam even though I've already added it to my steam library to use. No options to review under my play options and the game itself just wants me to download.
-
Summit1G he has like 15K subscribers on Twitch.
Exactly, and it's even closer to 21k subs now and over 2 million followers. If the community and HTC can do everything it can to try and have a positive impact on new potential players coming in, there is literally no limit to the possibilities. All it takes is one of the larger Twitch streamers or a few of the smaller ones even to start picking up AH3 as a game they stream, and that'll explode the exposure of the game even beyond what Steam alone has the potential to do. As Junky said, there are huge untapped pools of gamers out there that have never been exposed to this great game, and capturing just a tiny, tiny fraction of them = 1st world problems of the blue/orange days.
A good first day from the sounds of it, I hope it continues to improve for HTC and all of us players.

This game has a bigger E sport potential in its gameplay then a lot of the games that are trying to go into E sports.....only thing it needs is the population to be large enough for advertisers to be able to make money in events.
If Summit streamed Aces High for 1 week....he gets 10K people playing easily.
PUBG is the best example that actually advertising a game vs paying big streamers to play it is the new way to get numbers into your game....I saw little other then Social media posts then on release day all the big streamers...Summit, Drdisrespect, Shroud, Lirik Sodapoppin, TimTheTatman, MrGrimmz e ct e ct were all on PUBG and the game went from 40K active players from its release to 300K now....sold like 2 million copies through steam...
-
I agree to push this as hard as possible. Put up a review. Downvoted and commented the negative reviews. Let's get AH to the top!
-
wow whats up dolbys ass?

2M copies for such a crappy game :bhead
I'm jealous of krup being a celebrity and all

Kirin after such a long break very glad to see you back. I've read the reviews. Some of the chief complaints I've read are graphics, controls/controllers, difficulty flying (control of aircraft.)
May be good to explain WHY the graphics are the way they are. Graphics are designed as such so that many players don't have to spend huge amounts of money on a gaming PC. The graphics
are set at these levels so a wider variety of PCs can play. One is not limited to have a very high end PC to play. Game is accessible to more players. On some of the posts I've read that keyboard
commands aren't up to snuff. Evidently some tried to play using a keyboard only with a mouse or have a cheap off the shelf joystick. I get the impression that most did not attempt to any degree
to get to know the game. They understood this was not a simple first person shooter, or do not have the patience to learn. Also someone in this post pointed out our special events. I think that
would be great to mention.
-
better than that, you're celebrity!
Well, I got killed by Grimmz in PUBG once. What do I get?

and of course Dolby is saying that he was blackmailed into changing his review. I too agree with the person that said he spent 1/4 of his life playing this game and then took a dump on it. does not make much sense.

Thats the attitude you usually get from some little twit that has gaming top priority over everything else in life.
Its kind of sad actually. Everything is everyone elses fault.

*sniffle* Guess I'm still just a scrub then.

I'll put up a review when I get a chance. It will be positive, but honest as well as to the game's strengths and weaknesses.
Getting the wrong people to try the game will do no good.

I will make it positive, and I will do my best to sell the challenges as a good thing, because they are.
The market dominance of garbage like Warthunder is very vexing. Mouse driven, chase plane viewpoint crap.
Aces High is much better than casual games like that when the person who is playing it is up for it.
-
^^Completely agree Karnak.
The complaint I've seen in the negative "reviews" that I find even close to legit, is the complaints about the interface. I say that I don't find them completely valid because I feel there actually IS nothing wrong with it, it's just that it is complex, much more so than a "Warthunder" or what have you. The complexity of the interface and controls is what gives them so much power, but I realize that after 20 years of using them, it may seem simple pie to a lot of us vets, yet may be very daunting to new players. This is the one "focus issue" I feel that we should be addressing in our "vet reviews" on Steam - make it very clear that the controls and interface are incredibly accurate, customizable, and powerful, yet do take some work to learn.
A very KISS video (I think one exists already on YT) and/or links to the help pages regarding how to get the controls set up for both KB/Mouse/Joystick, may be a critical factor in keeping a higher fraction of the thousands that are trying the game out.
Karnak, you hit on a point there I think, when the controls and interface are so simple a caveman can do it, I believe this is a big, big factor on retaining new customers. What AH3 requires IMO, is just enough time, a number of hours or a couple days, for players to stick it out and begin to figure out the controls/etc, and once they begin to climb that learning curve, they begin to see what's possible, and how configurable that part of the game is, and then just how much more there is to challenge oneself - then the hook is sunk IMO.
Congrats so far HTC, very happy to see some early payoff so far for all time and effort you've put into not just getting the game on Steam, but since AH3's release, and the rapid fixes and continued improvements.
-
Sigh, and here I wish you would simply say Aces High is the coolest things since purple underwear. :D

I have purple underwear. Aces High is way cooler.

Agreed.
Gman, consider what trying to fly the first time would be with a mouse, or VR with mouse only. I.E. PITA with VR for first time users. Currently I believe the video walk threw when complete may help a fair amount.

Late to this thread, but in case anyone reading this does a Steam review, ...
IMHO one of the most important elements of AH (and its defunct predecessors like Air Warrior) is the view system, especially the legacy numeric keyboard view system. This type of view system allows instant glances in ANY prototypical direction (not just those in the plane of the wings and straight up), with your brain knowing where each direction is relative to the orientation of the aircraft. This is because each such direction corresponds to a unique hand position on the numeric keypad, thus giving you muscle feedback on that direction, as a real pilot obtains from their neck muscles. So, with practice, your brain knows for example that a particular patch of sky is "up and to the right-rear" relative to the orientation of the aircraft. So although Aces High supports special viewing hardware such as TrackIR, you don't need it to be competitive.
This type of real-time situational awareness yields a big increase in game play value. Because an experienced player has instantaneous, position-contextual information on his target(s) at all times, the player can utilize the full spectrum of real-world air combat maneuvers, as described in such books as Shaw's "Fighter Combat". Contrast this with the pitiful viewing system of such games as the in-development space sim "Star Citizen".

I have to agree with this. The viewing system really is great. One thing that has deterred me from other games is that the viewing system is painful. So far I've absolutely hated WT and BF4. I came from Microsoft Combat FS in 2005 and never realized how so important it was to be able to look around constantly and know where you are relative to the plane and sky and enemies.
By some accounts Im disappointed in the new Default AH forward view. I think starting off 10 centimeters from the gunsite isn't a very good starting place. It's going to make it even harder for new players. Trust me. Everyone who has changed their FOV to 109-120 has told me it's so much better.
-
also the ability to save head positions that make sense. IL2 and rise of flight have "head on a stick" keyboard view system. If there happens to be a big canopy bar or anything else right in front of your face - tough luck my stiff-necked buddy!
Not so in AH.
After 16 years in AH I still use the keyboard for views and can't imagine using anything else. Old habits die hard.
-
The classic illustration of the flexibility and utility of our viewing system was one of those videos by Leviathan (?) showing a particular maneuver whose name escapes me (old age...). Essentially the attacker is diving in from your rear. Keeping a constant eye on them, you roll around the axis of their approach just enough to deny them a guns solution, while simultaneously decelerating. Ideally, the target overshoots at point blank range, and bang (...). It requires a lot of skill to do this consistently, but the above player (whose in-game handle someone will hopefully provide) was very good at it.
Anyway, if anyone mentions our viewing system in a Steam review, they could include a link to a film showing the above maneuver to illustrate.

Quite true. About all anyone can do is flag those reviews. Steam does not seem to really do anything about those types of issues, but maybe if enough complain..... Hopefully, it is just a short term problem.

Are you guys at HTC able to see who they are by looking at IP's?
I think one of the negative reviews has almost 30 hours in game already through steam.. lol
Thats a good amount of playing time in less than a week for a game you trash in a review.
-
There is not much available to the developer in the reviews area for controlling content. As it should be, but Steam does not seem to take any action when you use the tools they do provide.
-
IMO the reviews won't stop anyone from downloading a free game...
-
We are not worried about the reviews causing people to not to try the game. It is just frustrating when people can act with impunity, in such a negative manner. Basically, they can make up anything they want.
It does make the review section a bit pointless.
It is always the same people, over and over again, looking for any outlet to say something negative about the people here.
-
I want to know how many other MMO's out there have a line open to the developer to call in and even discuss grievances let alone personally respond to e-mails and not use cookie-cutter replies that don't have anything to do with the questioning.
If I were writing a poor review, and I had to start with, "So I was talking to the developer of the game on the phone" I would at least think... wow, that's pretty effing sweet.
-
Was reading some of those negative reviews and can`t believe how silly some of these were. :headscratch: I hope people look further than this because this game truly deserves more players IMHO.
-
With a relatively small free download compared to other Steam games, and all the positive reviews, I think the negative reviews will have little impact.
-
I may be a bit caustic at times, but the animosity some individuals hold toward Aces High is ridiculous. Even if I hated HTC (which I don't, they have always been great), I sure would not want to punish my friends and the community at large by minimizing the potential player base.
This is a game. If your life revolves around a game so intently that real life no longer matters, you need to re-examine your life decisions.
-
No one takes notice of people moaning on reviews it's free for two weeks so would you :)
